Va and AlohaDawg have wonderful baby names.  We're all having babies!  Hurray!

Vivian is an especially endearing name to me because the Vivians I have met have all been beautiful women.  Once in a game store, I met a girl named Heavenly Walker, and she was.

Pedro has tapped into some kind of universal truth here.

All Vivians are beautiful women.  So Va, if you and Mr. Va are beautiful people, then it would be a lovely name for a girl.

If not, it'll just be a bitter reminder of how unattractive your daughter is for all of her life, such as she'll talk to someone on the phone who is delighted by her personality and the promise of the Vivian name, and then when then meet her they may physically recoil in horror (as opposed to emotionally recoiling) and maybe PURELY OUT OF REFLEX pull an arm up to their face for the dual purpose of defence and to block out all of the ugly.

You misunderstand.  She was a Texas Ranger.

Belatedly: Vivian and Cordelia are both lovely. I will freely confess that I find Glory and Eris a bit cutesy and over-special (and why Glory and not Gloria?), but a) as middle names that's basically respectable, and b) Vivian/Cordelia is your baby and not mine, so my opinions are semi-irrelevant.

Vivian is a beautiful name, but I've also always had a preference for the "Vivienne" spelling -- a pain in the ass, admittedly, but lovely. (And also less asexual, in case you happen to live somewhere where Vivian can still be a man's name.)

Why Gloria and not Glory?

Because Gloria has a lineage as a traditional first name that Glory lacked? This is really probably my taste showing -- I prefer the traditional over the neologistic in naming schemes, but YMMV, and it's not exactly like either option is bad per se. If you were about to name the kid Vivian Melancholy, things might have to be discussed.

Were you also planning to build her a tomb by the side of the sea?

When she's bad, you could brick her up inside one of your basement walls.  You could get her a red mask for Halloween.  You could hide her Christmas presents in plain sight.

Dang, you could have endless Poe-themed fun.  Just be careful or your house will fall down.

Well, when we decided not to be blatently morbid about the whole thing, we went with a Shakespearian/Greek Mythological name (Hero), so there's a whole new set of literary allusions as well as horrid puns that are likely to erupt from our house in about two weeks.  Of course, the Greek version of the name is still morbid, but it's at least less notorious.

And if it's a boy, we'll be calling him Pearce, and hoping he doesn't grow up believing that he needs to live up to his name by punching innumerable holes in himself.
