You like Achewood, that's great. But why trash Garfield (even in the backhanded well i used to like it, but like all people i grew out of it way) ?. I've often found people who like "web comics" tend to trash traditional media to justify their choices.
I like traditional comics plenty. Peanuts remains one of my favorites to this day, and Calvin & Hobbes always has a place in my heart somewhere or other. I never "grokked" Garfield.
Never thought people on
this
forum would be sensitive. Yeesh.

My two cents on this comics-snobbery tip:
Diesel Sweeties I read because (a) it is updated daily and I seem to have made a habit out of it and (b) it is very occasionally funny. I hate myself for reading it, though, because every single one of its characters needs to be pounded in the face with a shovel until they are dead.
And
I imagine (where "imagine"="infer based upon admittedly and happily limited experience") that the lion's share of Diesel Sweeties fans are shallow and insufferable in the exact same goddamned ways as those characters. OH HO, SEX PUNS AND INDIE ROCK! I WILL FORWARD THIS TO PEOPLE WHO MAKE ME FEEL COOL FOR KNOWING THEM
Garfield
is
a one- or two-trick pony, but occasionally those tricks are very good indeed. I'm not going to defend Jim Dav^H^H^H Paws, Inc's entire fuck*ng oeuvre like I would Peanuts (which, even when repetitive, felt cumulative and alive), but boiling it down to "I hate Mondays ROFL" is sort of missing the point, which is
one-liners you can smirk / smile / laugh at and relate to
.
Plenty of print comics are great,
you incredible assholes
. (Offer not valid where the reader is not, in fact, an incredible asshole.) I refer you to Pearls Before Swine, Get Fuzzy, and Monty - for starters. Foxtrot, Calvin and Hobbes, and Peanuts were already mentioned, have stood the test of time for
years
, and don't need my jerkwater defense.
Achewood and Penny Arcade are similar, in my opinion, in that they would be
nowhere
without the sharp writing. As we've batted around before, Achewood is the output of a writer who happens to create comic strips. And Tycho's literate and witty news posts are the best reason to regularly read Penny Arcade. (Compare with certain other news posts that boil down to "someone on some other website doesn't like me {link} but I'm far too cool to be at all bothered by it -- P.S. Looks like we wanged their server LOL")
Generally speaking, I like to like things, and I like to tell people about things that I like. With a few exceptions, I can't understand why people get so frothy about popular entertainment, as though the idea of many people at once enjoying any given Thing is just intrinsically incorrect and nauseating. I mean, ripping apart a Jerry Bruckheimer movie is one thing, but Family Circus makes grandmothers everywhere smile with a warm and reassuring feeling of recognition.

Damn people, look what happens when I'm offline for one fricken weekend.
In general: What Zartan said.
Specifically: I think many people stopped liking Garfield because it's all done by a staff now, not by Davis. And I agree this probably had an effect on strip quality but there are some recent ones that still make me laugh out loud (I LOVE BACON!!!) Also, each character serves only one purpose/personality-type which is very limiting over the years. People talk about Achewood's voices because each character seems very real and fully fleshed out. Teodor isn't just the one who cooks or the voice of reason. He's much more complex than that. Garfield characters couldn't keep up blogs.
I consider Diesel Sweeties a guilty pleasure. Not unlike watching wrestling or reading trashy books/magazines. I think it's target audience is people who really are IRP or Electron Mike but pretend to hate people like that. They like seeing Lil' Sis zing IRP for being a loser but if you read the message board they agree with him on a lot of points. Sometimes that's cool, sometimes they're right, sometimes they get on my nerves. But I think the strip loses a lot if you aren't in that target audience.

I'm really just terribly confused at this point. Am I allowed to like both Achewood and Diesel Sweeties? Am I allowed to like Achewood given that I used to like Garfield? Is there some sort of trigonometric equation I can plug this all into?
You can like whatever the hell you want. I just find the need to compare against something the quintessential sign of insecurity. You like Achewood, that's great. But why trash Garfield (even in the backhanded

Well, when i was a small child i would shit my #####, and i don't remember it bothering me at all. You could say that I've grown out of that and am pretty much not at all down with shitting my #####.
