David Theiss, 21, of Kansas City, Missouri, was arrested for keeping a pet toad with the intent of licking it to get high. The skin and venom glands of Colorado River toads produce powerful hallucinogens called tryptamines. Theiss was released on bond, but the toad remains in police custody. From KBMC.com:  Most pet stores don't sell the Colorado River toad because the venom can sicken humans and kill household animals.

    "People used to do it all the time, but it got faded out awhile, but came back as a fad. Not a smart one," animal expert Danny Snyder told KMBC's Dion Lim. "The toxins in it can kill a lot of stuff."

I didn't realize it was illegal to own a poisonous/hallucinogenic pet. I also don't know how they figured out how he owned it, and I have no idea how they bagged him on charges of "INTENT TO LICK". Did he write poems about licking the toad? Did he blog about it? What the hell??

his bumper sticker said "I lick toads, and I VOTE," his t-shirt said something like "I lick toads" on a plain brightly colored t-shirt, he sent out a facebook invite to an event called "come lick my new toad"... dude was asking for it in every way you can. he started a social networking site based around "licking" people who seemed cool, and after you did it your profile would say such as "the_inevitable is high off of linnea" and one of the main fields you filled out was "psychotropic substances in my house." the internet, man, it's like a big trap for people who like drugs.

a bunch of my friends got into a conversation the other day where they said they would delete their facebook profiles once they started applying for jobs, because they wouldn't want their potential employers to see their pictures where they are playing beer pong or waving a bong over their head triumphantly like a Tusken Raider. I started to ask "why don't you just not put that shit on the internet anyway" but I figured that was a losing argument. It is pretty simple. Someone put up a picture of me looking kind of red and drinking out of a red disposable cup, and I de-tagged it, and now my profile is not linked to it.

I love that NPR piece. that, and the Flaming Hot Cheetos thing.

Yeah, that's going to be scary for a lot of people... fortunately, there will reach a point where it is impossible to find someone who DOESN'T have incriminating shit about them on the Innernet somewhere.

Laws about what animals you can keep generally differ by state. This story raises a whole lot more questions than it answers - was the editor sound asleep, or what? I guess they're thinking it's just a News of the Weird kind of thing and not a serious story.
