Ira Glass did a thing about something like this.  It was about a group that does this sort of thing, shows up unexpectedly and makes a big deal out of something that would not other wise attract much attention.  Hell, it might even be this same group.  And in the case on This American Life they showed up at a club where an unknown band played and made their night.  But later it made the band depressed.  It was very sad.

I can totally see this. You're up there and you're thinking "Damn, something happened, we're really taking off!" And then later to find out it was pretty much a goof, and you go back to playing small crowds... well, shit.
My band did a "reunion show" a couple years after we broke up. It was homecoming weekend, and people who were freshmen when we'd last played together were now seniors. So we had a surprising number of people show up, very enthusiastic, "can't wait to hear you guys place, we've missed you," etc. Which was great. But at the same time, there was a bit of "Where the hell were you back when we were playing with regularity?" And that bummed me out a little. There have been no reunion shows since.

Yeah, interesting piece. What bugs me most is the fact that people made fun of the band for "falling for it." What the fuck were they supposed to do? See through it, announce "You people are faking it," and leave the stage? It's way too easy to laugh at people for falling for practical jokes in hindsight, when seeing through the ruse was really all but impossible. Not unlike the discussion of the use of "Troll Face" a while ago. Man, people are dicks.

That's my problem with this. Tit for tat isn't a functional part of parenting.

I just log into the router and start cutting off access to things. Then I wait for him to ask about it so some talking can happen. No muss, no fuss.
