I don't believe that animals were created to be food for humans. Genesis 1 says that God created humans to rule over animals, but in regards to food specifies
"Then God said, "Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the surface of all the earth, and every tree which has fruit yielding seed; it shall be food for you; and to every beast of the earth and to every bird of the sky and to every thing that moves on the earth which has life, I have given every green plant for food"; and it was so."

Yeah, but then the Gospels right up and say that Jesus ate a giraffe. If eating giraffe is okay for God, I figure it's fine for us, too.

Also, there's that other bit in the Gospels where Jesus directly created several thousand giraffe to be food for humans.

EDIT: Let's hear it for posting late at night when you forget what the filters are.

Jorge, I don't want to belittle your well thought out post.  You've raised some interesting points in a way that I've never considered before.

But on a lighter note... One of my favorite quotes regarding vegetarianism.  If god didn't want us to eat meat, why did he make it taste like steak?  Ha ha...

I wonder if humans are tasty?

He certainly did and that's certainly something to be reckoned with in my line of thought.

The standard response is that he also said "I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father." Now, since there aren't too many accounts of Christians running around raising the dead and walking on the water (although there are some of the former in the NT), he may not have meant greater in a more spectacular sense. Perhaps it was in a moral sense.  Many early Christian groups were vegetarian.

Paul, human flesh is probably tasty since many people around the globe eat monkey meat.

Now there's a religion I could get on board with.

Jorge, you are rad. I've got nothing to say at this juncture, but I will certainly think on that whole post.

damn I need to catch up on y'alls jibber jab jab

so anyway, I'm gonna try this puppy:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817270022

SIIG SC-SA0G12-S1 2.5" & 3.5" Black USB2.0 & eSATA Hard Drive Duplicator

$52.98 + $5 shipping.

I was gonna try the startech, but I have one of their docks that failed, and upon taking it apart I was not inspired by the looks of the internal hardware, nor was I inspired by the fact that it failed...

In other news...  I have a cheap-o Epson scanner... so I try to launch the scan program, and it gives an error that it can't write to drive or some such, and then it closes... I'm like... WTF...  obviously, what happened is I told it to use an external drive as a destination and/or temp file storage, and now I don't have said drive hooked up anymore, so the program is crashing.

solution 1)  (keep in mind I'm on windows xp)  open a command window and type in:

Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]
(C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp.

C:\Documents and Settings\admin>subst f: e:\

C:\Documents and Settings\admin>

voila, the f drive now exists (mapped to the e drive) without me having to go to the trouble to physically mount another drive.

solution 2)  buy a Mac and/or don't buy epson.  This option, of course, costs money.

solution 3) run linux.  And why not, if you're already having to mess with a command like just to get your windows gui to work.

PROS:
* slightly better instructions than industry average

* low price

* noisy cooling fan can be disconnected with screwdriver

* small lightweight power brick

* ROHS compliant

* power supply appears to be a quality switching supply

* nice styling of the case

* Copy of a PGP encrypted drive worked fine

CONS:

** Manual does not discuss what level of copy is done, if sectors marked as bad on the target drive are preserved as bad or if they or are used...

HUGE CON: ** When inserting a 2nd drive, I find that the computer loses connection with the 1st drive.  This is likely due to the power brick not supplying enough power for the 1st drive to keep running while the 2nd drive spins up.  I guess I can work around this, but not having this documented is terrible.  It could result in loss of data and corruption, depending on what you are doing at the time.

** noisy cooling fan

** cooling fan does not appear to go into sleep mode when/if hard drives go into sleep mode.

** no discussion of hard drive sleep mode in the instructions so I'm not even sure if sleep mode will work with this device yet.

** cooling fan can be disconnected but can not be replaced

**lights are annoyingly bright blue

**instructions are confusing and misleading if you have less than intermediate technical knowledge

**have to physically disconnect in order to copy

**the indicator light human interface is counter-intuitive, so the copy in-progress/finished indication may confuse you unless you read the instructions.

**power brick awkwardly placed in middle of cord.

**power button requires too much pressure to activate, is likely to bounce as a result.

**copy button requires too little pressure to activate...

**manual says how to 'confirm' the copy command, but there is no discussion in the manual of how to abort if you accidentally press the copy button...

having to physically disconnect the USB cable in order to copy is inconvenient, and will cause premature wear to the USB connectors which are rated for a finite number of cycles.

you can pop the bottom off to disconnect the cooling fan cable from the plug on the PC board, but you dare not pull the PC board from the case because it's an interference fit.  It's amazing they can assemble this thing without causing damage to the PC board component solder connections because it's such a tight fit.  The fan is unfortunately under the PC board so replacing it with a quiet fan is off limits.  unfortunately, because of this, if you drop a coin or other object into the open top of the unit, you won't be able to open it up to retrieve it without putting a dangerous amount of stress on the PC board.

In summary, this device is fine if you have intermediate technical knowledge, but if you're a newbie, you may find this device to be frustrating in some respects.

2 yr warranty is some consolation.
