Here. (http://terraserver-usa.com/image.aspx?t=1&s=10&x=3341&y=21192&z=16&w=1) The dark square roof is the house. The lighter, rectangular roof is a barn, as is the roof across the road. Our li'l slice o' heaven is the roughly triangular plot described by the front of the barn, the almost horizontal fence row behind the house, the gravel road to the west and the road in front of the house.
Can you find your house?
-
It is a little freaky to see the house you grew up in (http://terraserver-usa.com/addressimage.aspx?t=1&s=10&Lon=-74.09766238&Lat=41.00370197&Alon=-74.09766238&Alat=41.00370197&w=1&opt=0&ref=A|2%20Brown%20Stone%20Way,%20Ho-Ho-Kus,%20NJ%2007423)on Terraserver, especially when you can see the shadows cast by the bushes - from frikkin' outer space. Yikes.
ETA: the picture, duh. The house is actually half an inch below the red tack, which is located at 1 Brownstone Way.
<split hairs>
-
That is super awesome. I wish they had that in Canada form.
-
The current location of Fort Awesome can be found here (http://tiA-CAPrl.com/2f54t). You can clearly see the fire station across the street. The fire trucks at this station have for some reason started using their sirens as late as 1:00 in the morning. They used to be so good about waiting until they were up the street after 9:00 or so.

(click me) (http://terraserver-usa.com/addressimage.aspx?t=1&s=10&lon=-75.3127952148526&lat=39.8751220299166&alon=-75.31291013&alat=39.8751045744&w=1&ref=A%7c232+Haller+Rd%2c+Ridley+Park%2c+PA+19078)
Holy crap. I've actually never done this before.
You can see the little league field that I played baseball in at the bottom right. And the local pool to the far left (if you change the map size to Large). It's amazing.
This photo was taken four years after I moved away, but it's still frikkin' cool.
ed. to fix the scrolling issue. remember my sig that one time? -Choop.

Hey August, did your cows give a lot of milk this year?
How about the chickens? Lots of eggs from them thar hens?
Seriously, is that where you live now, or where you grew up? Is it really a farm, or are you just six miles away from your nearest neighbor for no good reason?
[Edit: Since Jough has already ruined the internet for everyone, I may as well post my childhood home:]
My Childhood Home (http://terraserver-usa.com/addressimage.aspx?t=1&s=10&lon=-83.6548829175437&lat=41.5763099804818&alon=-83.65511877&alat=41.5765258309433&w=2&ref=A%7c1427+Cass+Rd%2c+Maumee%2c+OH+43537)
The red dot is actually across the street from where I lived. If you put your penis on the dot, move it directly to the left, and then go up one house, that's the house I was raised in. The small structure to the left of that (on the same lot) is a large tool shed -- the size of a four-car garage. The monstrosity behind that is an eighteen-screen movie theatre. When I was growing up, it was a drive-in, and I could watch the movies (sans sound, of course) from my bedroom window. When I was nine, they tore down the drive-in and put in a driving range. The cineplex went in the year after we moved.
The largish structure to the lower-right of the red dot is a Presbyterian church with a preschool.
-
That is where I live now. We like the solitude, peace and quiet. We are plant people, so we have lots of space to grow things. We have dogs and cats and yes, one rooster. Our place is not a farm -- you can't do much farming on 2.5 acres -- but we are surrounded by real working farms.
I grew up in town, but I'm glad I live out in the boonies now.
-
Rock, Rock on, August.
Here's a very nice shot of the home my parents lived in until last year, when they opted for a town home (being empty nesters and all). They were still living there when this photo was taken, but I had moved out a year earlier. The left "wing" was my parent's room, the right "wing" was intended for me and my brother, but he went and got married before they completed the move. The structure out back was split roughly down the roof line. The front portion was a "guest house" where I lived throughout college -- often with a roommate. The rear portion was a workshop/tool storage unit, fully wired and stocked to the gills with construction equipment.
My Parent's House (http://terraserver-usa.com/addressimage.aspx?t=4&s=8&lon=-78.7704571753113&lat=35.7083601266877&alon=-78.77047483&alat=35.70791138&w=1&ref=A%7c7812+Belgium+Dr%2c+Raleigh%2c+NC+27606)
The guest house/shed was erected in a single week by a crew of four -- my parents, my brother, and myself. It served as a storage area and base of operations for the construction of the main house, which was also built by the same crew of four over the course of eighteen months, largely while we were living in it.
I changed bedrooms four times during the ten years I lived at that address.
This is where we live now. (http://terraserver-usa.com/addressimage.aspx?t=4&s=8&lon=-78.6587548993844&lat=35.7507887842062&alon=-78.65744203&alat=35.7507808668921&w=1&ref=A%7c628+Oleander+Rd%2c+Raleigh%2c+NC+27603)Third house from the left-hand street, facing south.

I'd post a pic of the house we're closing escrow on, except then you'd realize that I'm moving to what is essentially a suburb of LAX.

What is the facility that's kind of behind you with all the trucks parked at it?

That is where I live now.
Excellent.
This information will facilitate our bombing raid.
Carry on, citizen.

I grew up on the red dot. (http://terraserver-usa.com/addressimage.aspx?t=1&s=10&Lon=-147.87500255&Lat=64.83800224&Alon=-147.87500255&Alat=64.83800224&w=1&opt=0&ref=A|5165%20Chilkoot%20Dr,%20Fairbanks,%20AK%2099709) Well, on the house what has the red dot here, anyway.
We spent seven years at the end of this cul-de-sac... (http://terraserver-usa.com/addressimage.aspx?t=1&s=10&Lon=-96.61864706&Lat=40.81074571&Alon=-96.61864706&Alat=40.81074571&w=1&opt=0&ref=A|7520%20Glenwood%20Cir,%20Lincoln,%20NE%2068510)

I don't know, actually. We hear odd banging noises coming from back there fairly regularly, but I honestly have no clue what goes on back there.
Ignorance is bliss.

This (http://terraserver-usa.com/addressimage.aspx?t=1&s=10&Lon=-85.69343846&Lat=38.23402611&Alon=-85.69343846&Alat=38.23402611&w=1&opt=0&ref=A|1725%20Casselberry%20Rd,%20Louisville,%20KY%2040205) is basically where I am now, although here (http://terraserver-usa.com/addressimage.aspx?t=1&s=10&Lon=-73.96882452&Lat=40.79918220&Alon=-73.96882452&Alat=40.79918220&w=1&opt=0&ref=A|235%20W%20103rd%20St,%20New%20York,%20NY%2010025) is where I was living when I chose my namesake.
Actually, I really really like the New York picture, and can actually identify my apartment better that I can identify my house in the Kentucky picture.

I zoomed out and panned a bit so that you can see the memorials/Potomac in relation to me. If you go one click south you can see the Pentagon.
From 2002 (http://terraserver-usa.com/addressimage.aspx?t=4&s=13&lon=-77.055128981671&lat=38.8913648289384&alon=-77.08293999&alat=38.89818687&w=1&ref=A%7c2107+N+Taft+St%2c+Arlington%2c+VA+22201).

That's awesome.

Oddly the black and white version (http://terraserver-usa.com/addressimage.aspx?t=1&s=10&lon=-77.08293999&lat=38.89818687&alon=-77.08293999&alat=38.89818687&w=1&ref=A%7c2107+N+Taft+St%2c+Arlington%2c+VA+22201) is 4 years older and not zoomed in as far.
-
Oh, this is too freaky. No way I am posting the link. What if I was sitting out in the backyard picking my nose when they took the picture?
-
They only have maps of Kailua, no aerial photos. I imagine the proximity of the Marine base and Naval Air Station may have something to do with that.
I did find the house I grew up in and my parents still live in, though.
-

Based on the parking lots (http://terraserver-usa.com/addressimage.aspx?t=4&s=8&lon=-77.3293632128791&lat=38.9434946465225&alon=-77.33192088&alat=38.93552068&w=1&ref=A%7cS+Lakes+Dr%2c+Reston%2c+VA+20191) of my job and the German military base next door I'd say they took the photos way early in the morning.

Here's my apartment building (http://terraserver-usa.com/addressimage.aspx?t=4&s=9&lon=-84.3777354434476&lat=33.7484780657629&alon=-84.37774595&alat=33.74673867&w=1&ref=A%7c30312) - the one on the right, shaped like an inverted U. See those train tracks and that one train right behind it? That's right out my window.
Jesus, that's up close.
In this picture (http://terraserver-usa.com/addressimage.aspx?t=4&s=12&lon=-84.3777354434476&lat=33.7484780657629&alon=-84.37774595&alat=33.74673867&w=1&ref=A%7c30312), it's just above the pushpin, and the upper left corner is downtown; the tangle of highways is where the I-75/85 connector meets I-20.
Damn, I love the terraserver. I've helped to build an application kind of like it for the GA DOT, with more information (road details, construction projects, etc.) in addition to the photography - but since the terraserver's data is co-owned by Microsoft, even the USGS can't give it to other governmental units inside the country.

Short version: it's my father's fault.
Long version: When I was a kid, my father worked for the University of Alaska, Fairbanks. However, due to increasing loss of funding and decay of facilities, the university prepared to undergo a lot of layoffs; my father basically decided to pull a "you can't fire me, I quit," and once he resigned he decided to use the opportunity to finally get his doctorate in history. This caused us to move to Nebraska, where he did his doctorate work while I was in high school. After he got his doctorate last summer, he began the job search and almost immediately got an offer from, of all places, Louisiana's magnet honors high school. He liked the job and took it... and so now we're in Louisiana.

Anyone else notice how much WAY closer up the pictures start to be in 2002? Now that I've looked at everyone's I see why a lot of you weren't worried that you could be seen picking your nose in yours. Here's mine (now that I've figured out how to get the right picture without giving away my actual address), second house from the left on the bottom, you can see the doors and windows on the front of the house and everything.

oh dang wombat i used the zoom command and there you are, stone cold eatin' a boogie. dang, that is mega nasty!
My goodness V, you've certainly lived in a wide variety of places. Why?
When we design sentient computer programs that talk to us, we have to figure out a way to make them actually be AugustWest.
My goodness, Commander, there appears to be a hull breach in Sector 9aZ. Shall I repressurize and move tea-time back an hour PRESS ONE OR SAY YES AT ANY TIME.
This is me pre-emptively apologizing if August thinks I'm trying to portray him as a namby-bot. What you can't see is, while AugustWestOTron 9000 is saying all of that, he's also eradicating the Klingons with extreme prejudice.
-
Whoa Choop - I knew you lived in ATL, but I didn't know you lived about a mile away from me!
Anyway, here's me (http://terraserver-usa.com/addressimage.aspx?t=4&s=9&lon=-84.3642376535841&lat=33.7731269314352&alon=-84.38501327&alat=33.77217771&w=1&ref=A%7cPonce+de+Leon+Ave+NE%2c+Atlanta%2c+GA+30308).
The big building in the middle is my apartment, and yes, you can see into the middle. It used to be a factory that they turned into apartments, and there's a nice courtyard in the middle that's open to the rain and birds and such. To the left is a branch of city hall that I can see from my windows.
It would take hours to post the other *counts on fingers* 13 or so places I've lived, but maybe I'll track down a couple later.
-
Are you in the Ford Factory Lofts, wombat?
Why haven't we gotten together for such as beer and darts?
You may be interested in our moving sale (http://www.10mar2001.com/loft/sale/) that we're having so as to fit into the house we're moving into... (I don't know if the prices are right just yet so don't hold me to them)

I really don't know whether to be flattered or pissed. I guess my query did have a certain "Eliza" flavor to it.
I'll just be over here in the corner, Dave.
Daisy, Daisy...Give me your answer....do....

Are you in the Ford Factory Lofts, wombat?

I certainly am, and I don't know why! I'm piss-poor at darts (or I would buy your dart board - the thought of owning it makes me fear for my security deposit) but I'll still play as long as I've got a pint in the other hand. PM me or somesuch.
-
Why, Mite, did I call you wombat? Please to forgiving me soon.
One does not begin to play darts in one's or others' homes, one begins at a local pub.
Details will follow upon my return to the country.

Looking at the house I grew up in is too depressing (all the fields I used to play in are now condos and townhomes), so here's my old lab (http://terraserver-usa.com/addressimage.aspx?t=4&s=9&lon=-122.304799186518&lat=47.6517864403412&alon=-122.30580690&alat=47.65267597&w=1&ref=A%7cMason+Rd%2c+Seattle%2c+WA+98195). It's the rectangular building near the center. My office was on the top flor, in the lower right hand corner, and my lab was on the other side of the build 2 floors down.
But, now that I'm moving, my lab will be here (http://terraserver-usa.com/addressimage.aspx?t=1&s=10&lon=-91.7740269076568&lat=37.9565331429748&alon=-91.77404852&alat=37.95474992&w=1&ref=A%7c65409), just to the left of dead center.

At the corner of the two paved roads at the bottom of this image (http://terraserver-usa.com/image.aspx?t=4&s=11&x=582&y=8179&z=15&w=1), one can see where ground is being cleared for the eventual construction of my apartment complex.
Seeing my childhood home (http://terraserver-usa.com/image.aspx?t=1&s=10&x=3618&y=18269&z=14&w=1) (the house southeast of and directly parallel with the two water tanks) gave me serious chills. As though I'm looking at something that shouldn't technically exist, you know?

Frustratingly enough, I cannot find overhead photographs of anywhere I have lived.
However, what it did cause was me to find this page (http://hometown.aol.com/_ht_a/sypittdfs/twns-vlgs/lkrb/lkrb-twn-index.htm) with a small tour of, not my home town, but close, seeing as I lived in a village of about a hundred or so people, seven miles from Lockerbie.
Interestingly, about the only things that really stood out in the pictures, were in the bottom photo on page 1.
The building with the white door, and yellow sign just to the right of the monument was the Happy Garden Chinese takeaway we used, and the triangular building on the very right was the chipshop.
It's really one of those little Scottish hick towns you get in the borders. Not been back in ten years, and I'm still not entirely sure if I will...

That couch is Awesome. I have always been a fan of bendy sittable things.
And I miss Paul.
-
I have no idea what happened to Paul. WTF is he?
-
I got this e-mail from him yesterday.
I have been too busy to take the time to reload windows. I'll be back soon.

Reload Windows? Ugh. Here I was going to suggest he run a tracert to see where the bad link is between him and Jough's server. Hopefully he has a handle on it.
