Title: modest penis
Post by: arkabee on June 25, 2004, 03:52:49 am
i dunno.  i have no indie cred left.  all my favorite bands break up.  usually before i discover them.  dammit j. robbins stop producing crap bands and write something more beautiful than "surgeon's house", i fuck*ng double dog dare you.

oh, ya, so, modest penis.

i feel greasy.  i heard about them, before i heard them.  i think on, gasp, mtv of all places.  and i don't get cable.

and i heard "float on" on the radio.  and i thought "That's not bad."

so i bought the new album online from an odd russian fellow.

it's not bad.  it's pretty good.  i don't think there's been a happy song i've liked as much as float on.

it's nice.

the rest of the album is pretty sad.  sad as in "are you dead or are you sleeping, god i sure hope you are dead", not as in crappy.

all though some of it seems to be "we will make songs noone will like", some of it is "we will make songs that we like", and i prefer the latter.

anyways, for less than 2 dollars online, i would have to give it a resounding thumbs up.

for more than what my kidney could get on the black market in a record store, i'd have to give it a resounding thumbs "meh".

i mean, there's a couple of songs i'd like to learn to play, but then there's some songs i just don't know about.

i'll see if i get sick of it soon, or not.

I'd definitely suggest grabbing the earlier albums if you like the "sad" stuff; I'm a pretty big fan. I was introduced to them via "The Moon and Antartica,"  which may or may not be a good starting place. That said, I'm definitely not going to bullshit about M.M. "selling out" or whatever because they wrote a song that's just generally awesome and accessable. I rate the new album SOLID GOLD DANCER.

ya, i got the moon and antarctica too.

i just hate "filler".  great, it's 30 seconds of horns.  why are you doing this to me?

ya know?

Someone last weekend told me that the Dirty Dozen Brass Band did all the horns on this album, and it was the thing that really got me interested in checking it out.  Is that 30 seconds all they appear on there?

I have been complaining for years about the lack of brass in modern music.

A good buddy of mine got to meet Wayne Coyne, lead singer for The Flaming Lips, a couple of years back  (just post-Yoshimi, I believe). His advice to my friend, a budding musician? "Sell out as soon as you can."

The Onion AV club interview with Isaac essentially says the same thing. If you wanna actually quit your day job, you can't just write experimental rock. The man wants to eat, and this single (which is awesome) will take care of that for awhile.

Sorry if this sounds a bit snippy, but as an admitted Hipster (it's the first step to recovery) I'm awfully sick of watching folks run away from this band like rats from a sinking ship.

no, there are horns in "songs", which is good.  but track 1 is a 30 second snippet of horns, which is bad, in my opinion.  i want indie rock, i don;t want john phillips jengleheimer schmidt.

I've only heard a little Modest penis, but I don't get the appeal.  They sound like a pretentious Strokes to me - and their songs sound overlong, like they're trying to stretch the length of each one so that they can fill the album up faster.

I can't believe some of these "artists" get record contracts when there are great bands twisting on the vine.

pretentious strokes? (for different folks? ha, i _slay_ me.)

aren't the strokes pretty pretentious in and of themselves?

overlong songs? i dunno, i'm not the right person to judge.  if i like a song, i don't want it to end.  ever.

(sometimes i worry, my gf hates when a song ends up repeating itself.  she also refers to 75% of my music choices as "racket" and 75% as "damn racket".  however, she _likes_ (read: oh yeah.) Girls Against Boys.  not the new cd (which sucks).  however, she also _likes_ Def Leppard. so, um, ya.  anyways, i worry.)

I'm a big fan of Built to Spill.  rather, i like Built to Spill a lot.  but, i hate phish.  so it's not jamming, per se, that i like, so much as when somoene won't end a song i like.

in regards to bands twisting in the vine: yes, i agree.

so, anyways, i've been listening to the new cd in the car, and the antarctica cd at the office, and i've begun to like them more and more.

anways, the cd, i think what i originally took to be "filler" most likely isn't filler, it's just that there doesn't seem to be a sonic coherency to this album tha i can find yet.  the songs don't really flow.

anways.

edit-
did i just refer to Freakonica as the "new cd"?  hello, do i live under a rock?  am i "so last century"?

A good article from Steve Albini on selling out, or not selling out:

http://www.negativland.com/albini.html

Just something to think about.  Flaming Lips be damned.  Actually, Built to Spill is a band that continued to make amazing stuff after they signed on to a major (some would say their first two WB albums are their best period), as lots of other bands do.  It's just not the way to be rich for most people.

Modest penis, to me, has always been really hit or miss.  Heart Cooks Brain, from the album Lonesome Crowded West, is probably one of my ten or so favorite songs ever (the album is pretty ok, as is This is a Long Drive..., an earlier album).  The Moon and Antarctica is a pretty damn good album.  Interstate 8, aside from the live set at the end, is a nearly perfect EP.  They have some amazing singles, compiled on CD in the form of Building Nothing out of Something.  But they also have a lot of shit.  Not just mediocre stuff, but pure shit.  For me, they lost it almost completely after The Moon and Antarctica.  It obviously has nothing to do with selling out, because that album is on a major.  It's just that, well I think they suck now.  Just me.  But maybe now with their original drummer back (or so I'm told) they'll return to form.  We'll see.

Yeah, I dont get the Strokes comparison.  At least not with the material I'm familiar with (haven't heard but a little of the new album).  The Strokes embody pretention, but they have some pretty cool songs.  Anyway, Isaac Brock is pure white trash.  He's a total redneck.  I haven't seen him in years, but they used to play pretty frequently in the Seattle area.  You were lucky if you caught him sober.  And seeing him slobbering drunk wasn't that fun.  He wore trucker hats before it was cool.  He wore flannel after it was cool.  He sang disco-ish songs about cockroaches.  Nothing pretentious about him.

selling out-
I think a lot of people who get "mad" at "bands" for selling out, are not "mad" so much as "jealous".
I mean, i'd love to get a bajillion dollars for "nothing, and my chicks for free."
who wouldn't?

of course, then you grow up a bit, and find out that most bands who have "sold-out" end up being broker than before.  I mean, remember when TLC went bankrupt?  and it wasn't BullShit hammer-like waste?  it was because they were so f'd over in their contract?

there's also that intrinsic "pettiness" of not wanting to share.  who wants their favorite thing touched, talked about, and slobbered over by the unclean teaming masses of people you hate?  ooooh, me, me!

then you might reach a stage where you think "if they can make another good album, another good ep, hell just one more good song.  ok, if they make 1 more good riff, then i don't care what they had to do to do it, so long as they Brought Me Their Love. "  i'm _so_ sick of my favorite bands breaking up.

of course, i just found out that J. Robbins is on some new cd.  not singing, apparently, just riffing, but hey that's cool.  only it's from some members of PRomise Ring.  which i don't know if it's cool or not.  i hope it doesn't suck. please make it not suck.  no sucky-sucky mr. robbins, no sucky-sucky please!

modest penis-

1- Jough, i can kind of understand what you mean, maybe, about "filling space".  i got another album, something out of nothing, and also on the antarctica one, it seems lyrically repetitive.  like, on one of those songs, the chorus is like 2 lines repeated 4 times, and the entirety of the lyrics are repeated 2x.

i haven't really noticed that on the new one.

2- the new one is growing on me more.

Built to Spill-
They have always struck me as a band that exists to make music, not to be a band.  and i think that's why they make beautiful music.
I mean, what should music care what label it's on?

Steve Albini article-

I am quite familiar with that Albini article, and there was a time when my band-mates and I would probably have swum that trench of filth.  Usually I'm glad we never had that put to us.

When the record labels bitch about file-sharing and CD burners, and moan that the artists are hurt, they should be given that article and asked to explain why they don't help out the artists on their side, if they care about them so freakin' much.

I don't really enjoy recent Modest penis, but not for purely ideological reasons, I just don't like the sound of their new album, and I completely fail to understand the apparently vast and enthusiastic appeal of "Float On".  I do think that The Moon & Antarctica is good solid indie rock, even though it's not technically indie as such.  I guess I'll worry more about my cred when I move somewhere where I have more than three acquaintances whose musical taste I respect.

the appeal of float on:

see, it's a guitar rock song that makes me smile.  it makes me happy.  it makes me think "hey, maybe we'll all just float on, ok?"

at some point in time, a man begins to say to himself:

"self?  maybe another night with a bottle of vodka, coffee, and a Swans album isn't such a good idea. not such a good idea at all."

and yet, you still hold on to sad, melancholy loser-rock.  sure, Barbie-girl get's discussed on VH1 and when noone is looking you bop your head to it, but when the shit hits the fan, and you feel like gnawing through your wrists at the intrinsic assedness of the world at large and you have nowhere else to turn to but your cd collection and you _reallllllly_ need to be cheered up because god dammit to hell it has got to be better and there it is, there's a bob mould cd, and you can't resist, because you love it, you need it, and at it's basest level you _KNOW_ that it is basic beauty, so you put it on and let it comfort you while you cry into your empty bottle of irish whiskey and then finally pass out underneath your snuffle-up-a-gus comforter that your older sister through out when you turned 12 but you secretly got back out of the trash.

so, the appeal of "float on" is that it's a kick ass song that you like, but it actually doesn't make you want take a nap on a train track.

there's this cartoonist.  last name of Adams.  can't draw for shit.  made these 4 panel comics, had a collection of them in college, green book.

anyways.

i'll always vaguely half-remember the title to one of them was sort of something maybe similar to: "Everything i say comes from a pop song".

i notice that happens a lot.  not like that strip, where the character's eyes are spinning and he's going "i am the walrus".  more in that i realize everytime i try to write that i seem to be using someone's lyrics in dialogue.

anyways, keep it down now, voices carry, ya know.

That's partly what I like about Modest penis.  Repitition can be a wonderful thing.  Also, you should know that Building Nothing out of Something is a compliation of singles and EP tracks, so if it doesn't feel like a typical MM album, that's because it's not an album at all.  But it does contain my second and third favorite MM songs, Interstate 8 and All Night Diner (which is good because last I checked the Interstate 8 EP was out of print), along with some other great stuff, and some filler.

I'd say that Moon and Anarctica, while it doesn't contain any of my favorite songs, is probably their most solid album, but, I don't know their material well at all after that record.

I really can't recommend the song Heart Cooks Brain enough.  It is beautiful.  It's on an Up Records compilation that may still be available, and the album it's from, Lonesome Crowded West, is pretty decent.  The song's a bit repetitive, but hey, that's OK, it works perfectly.  In fact, it's on right now.

Built to Spill is probably my favorite band, and I think you're right about them.  That's probably because the band is really built around whatever the fuck Doug Martsch wants to do.  A friend of mine talked to him before a show a while ago and was pretty excited and went out of his way to compliment the new album and such.  Doug was very nice, but he also kind of had an attitude like, so what, I'm in a band, who cares, I'm just doing what I want to do.  Like fans of the band take the band thing much more seriously than the members do.  It's part of Doug's charm, but also probably contributes to the fact that they'll never really be big.  People like crazy stories and zany personalities to go along with the music.

Is that who originally did "100,000 Fireflies?!" I'd been wondering ever since I found another atrocious cover of it -- so atrocious that it was fabulous.

(I would have had a link there, but apparently his website doesn't actually exist anymore. I did find the artist's page on Somesongs (http://www.somesongs.com/artist_info.php?select=51), though.)

Are you sure you're thinking of Built to Spill?  I know that they haven't released such a cover, and I've never heard of them performing it.  Now, Superchunk did cover it, and a friend of mine once said I would like Superchunk because I like Built to Spill, but I never got around to listening to them.  I feel you though, that's a damn good song to mess up, so I would be upset too.  I'm thinking maybe you have them confused.  If this is what you are basing your opinion of Built to Spill on, I urge you to give them another chance, because I think you got the wrong band!  All of their albums are on my favorite list (well, besides maybe the most recent one and the Live album), but I usually hear other people say that Perfect From Now On and Keep It Like A Secret are their best.  Ultimate Alternative Wavers is their first and was my favorite album for years back in high school, and their second album, There's Nothing Wrong With Love, is one of those indie pop classics I guess you could say, a damn fine album.  The first time I saw them, soon after Theres Nothing Wrong With Love was released, was one of the best live show experiences I've ever head, in fact, one of the best experiences in general I've ever had.  So anyway...

Hmm, as I said, Theres Nothing Wrong With Love is one of those classic indie pop albums.  You really can't go wrong with that.  Most of the songs are short and very hooky.  A really catchy record, every song is great.  Perfect From Now On shows Doug's true colors though, I think, with long guitar based songs.  I think only one song clocks in under five minutes.  Keep It Like a Secret is also as good, with some of my absolute favorite songs, such as Carry the Zero and Timetrap.  Ultimate Alternative Wavers, being their first, is probably the least accessible, though I love it very much.  I'd save it for last.  Their most recent album, Ancient Melodies of the Future, is decent.  Their Live album isn't really necessary, but shows what a good live band they are.

If you're downloading songs:

Carry the Zero
Time Trap
Else
Built to Spill
In the Morning
Reasons
Twin Falls
Some
Distopian Dream Girl
Velvet Waltz
Kicked it in the Sun
Made-Up Dreams
Car

That's a good start.

i don't know what a "100000 fireflies" is.  nor what a "magnetic fields" is.  but if built to spill covered a song, and it sounds bad, then it's the songs fault, or the listeners fault, not built to spill's.  :P

live album- kicks ass. cortez the killer is better than when neil young does it.  suck it, mr. young, indie bands from BFI don't need you around, anyhow.

my 1st cd of theirs was Perfect From Now On, so i am totally biased.  also, i love long songs that rock out and are THE PRETTIEST SONGS EVER.  i'm a sucker for THE PRETTIEST SONGS EVER.  i mean, who am i to say anything bad about THE PRETTIEST SONGS EVER.  of course, if you are the type of person not to like THE PRETTIEST SONGS EVER then you might not like it so much i suppose.

the last cd was like they went back to making indie pop songs but kept the production knowledge they learned from Perfect From Now On.

The other 2 cd's are very indie pop songy.  Ultimate Waver Whatevers is really a great cd, sure i give it a hard time, by i give it a hard time in the way i'd give a little brother who was never as good as Perfect From Now On and could never live up to it a hard time.

I can't believe someone would say you'd like superchunk because you like Built To Spill.  I like superchunk, i only have 2 albums, so i could be wrong, but that's like saying "hey, you have an indie pop cd, i bet you like all indie pop".  that being said, you probably _would_ like superchunk, but i dunno what the hell they have to do with Built To Spill is all i'm saying.

I disagree about the live album.  I just think it's kind of boring.  And I think Neil does a very fine job of performing that song.  Slint, incidentally, does as well.  But I do like it when my favorite bands cover Neil Young Songs, like Low and the Pixies, and Slint, and of course Built to Spill.

Yeah, I don't know why my friend made the comparison.  I think I may have heard one song by Superchunk and it didn't really remind me of Built to Spill, but I don't remember.  A lot of people just lump indie pop type bands together.  Built to Spill almost inevitably comes up in a discussion about Modest penis, which I guess is how we got to this point...

no disrespect to neil young meant.  i like mr. neil, and i love his trains.

live album boring? quite possibly.  miles, you strike me as a musically intelligent person.  i, however, am a fanboy.  i like what i like, but i really don't know why it is that i like it, and will probably glaze over the stuff i don't like so much with enthusiasm for stuff i like.  the live album is MORE built to spill.  more! that's better than less! ;)   what is "Singing sores make perfect sores" from? because i love that song.  love it.  enthusiasm, enthusiasm, enthusiasm.

pixies = my favorite band too!  what are the chances of that? heh.

Low- who is low?  info, recomendations?

Slint: i first heard slint on the "Kids" soundtrack, that "captain" song.  i love that song.  unfortunately, it's on a tape copy of that soundtrack.  that saddens me.  the only time i've heard anyone say anything about them, i was in cincinatti at a record store, and i found "Tweez" there used, and when i went to pay i asked if they had more cd's and the clerk was all "they are a cool band from kentucky and you've never heard of them hah hah hah".  i don't like Tweez so much.  it's ok, but it's a _hard_ listen, like it takes effort.

Superchunk.  i have 2 albums, one on tape i can't find that i love.  it had "the single" that i remember hearing in the 90s making me buy the album.  the other on cd is "Indoor Living".  i find it weak.  weak and without my emthusiasm.  avoid "Indoor Living".  get the one before, or before before it.

modest penis inevitably bringing up Built To Spill:
i've been listening to modest penis more and more, and i can hear BTS in Building Something out of Nothing, but not on the new cd.

segue:
i love hearing the influences in a band like from bands i like.  modest penis is growing on me, because i keep hearing different influences that i like.

and back to indie cred, selling out, and record labels.

there are 2 record labels that i trust will most likely give me something i like:
Matador and MEtropolis.

I'd give Matador about 50% and Metropolis 40% hit ratio.

No, it's cool if you don't like Neil Young.  Lots of people don't.  As long as you like trains.

I'm not musically intelligent, but thank you for the compliment.  I'm kind of the same way, I like what I like.  Of course I like the Live album, it's more of the best band ever!  Just when recommeding albums to others, I think it's less essential.  I don't like live albums in general.  However, I buy whatever Built to Spill I can get my hands on.  I like mediocre BtS better than most stuff out there.

The Singing Sores song is a cover... a song by... shit, I forget.  Love as Laughter, that's the name.  I'm not sure what album of theirs it's on.  A great cover though.  In fact, Doug Martsch can cover anything and make it brilliant (kinda like Johnny Cash, only better at it).  I have a llive recording of him doing I Try by Macy Gray and it's wonderful.  I saw him on a solo tour and he mainly did covers, with a few BtS songs thrown in.  He did a great Curtis Mayfield cover, along with Still Ill by the Smiths.  He's also done Mr. Crowley by Ozzy with the band, which rocked, stuff by the Clash, lots of stuff.  All great.

Low is a band from Duluth Minnesota.  They've been around since 1993 I think.  Thing about them is that, especially up until recently, they are very very slow.  Their website is http://www.chairkickers.com  I'd start with their most recent stuff, but I like their earlier stuff best.  They have a beautiful Rarity/B-sides 3 disc/1 DVD comp coming out in a few weeks, and I think a new album this fall.  Their Neil Young cover is Down by the River.  Their version is wonderful, but not quite as great as Young's.

The Slint captain song is on Spiderland, one of the best albums every recorded.  You know, I've only heard Tweez maybe once.  But most people (nine out of ten, in fact) agree it's the inferior album.  I also have a good single from them.  It's all on Touch and Go Records.  So yeah, you need to get Spiderland.

I would have to say earlier Modest penis is heavily influenced by Built to Spill, but they've definitely made their own name and sound.  I don't hear it as much on the Moon and Antarctica

Who is on Metropolis?  And yes, I agree, Matador is pretty consistent.

THAT OFFER STILL STANDS

Seriously. Give me proof that you have punched a smug Record Store Person in the Face and I will reward you. I love Music, too, but I have this weird sense that it should be personal and on one's own time and ground rather than a frustrating game of Credibility Catch-Up.

Slint, THE BEST BAND YOU AIN'T NEVER HEARD.

Hahhahah.
Hahahahah.
A-hahahah.
This makes me very happy, because I am from Louisville, am in fact living here now. And Slint is the greatest band ever. I mean, partly because they're hometown heroes (I rent movies from the drummer, who now owns a video store here), but also because they're SLINT. Here's a little Steve Albini quote about them-
Quote from: "Steve-O 'Shrinking Violet' Albini"
Only two other bands have meant as much to me as Slint in the past few years and only one of them, The Jesus Lizard, have made a record this good. We are in a time of midgets: dance music, three varieties of simple-minded hard rock genre crap, soulless-crooning, infantile slogan-studded rap and ball-less balladeering. My instincts tell me the dry spell will continue for a while- possibly until the bands Slint will inspire reach maturity. Until then, play this record and kick yourself if you never got to see them live. In ten years, you'll lie like the cocksucker you are and say you did anyway. Ten fuck*ng stars.

And basically every band to arise from the ashes of Slint were great....I'm sorry, I'm fanboying up. But GOD DAMN. I love that band.

Ha, Zart, you're still awesome.

EDIT: Sorry for being an asshole and making Zart want to punch me. But living in New York, coming from Kentucky, invites a lot of "har har you wear shoes?" jokes, and every time somebody made that joke, I could go home and listen to Slint and My Morning Jacket. I'm a tad sensitive.

no, i like mr. neil's music.  no, really.

http://www.metropolis-records.com/
i'd say they are to industrial as matador is to indie.  sure, matador had rap and electronica, but it's rap and electronica that fits on matador.  now, say the same hting but say "metropolis".

obviously i am totally swayed into thinking metropolis is the bee's knees because they are releasing new Front 242 album/ep stuff.  and Front 242 is the bestest band ever.  But, they also carry wumpscut, cEvin Key, Front Line Assembly (ok, ok, yes.  but they're like _candy_.  yummy industrial _candy_ that is going to make me sick 2 hours later, but damn it's _candy_ man.), and shit they even have some Bauhaus stuff.

it's like they are fans of the genre, and in addition to trying to find new bands to put out that they'd like, they also gobble up some oldie's but goodies to put out too.

but, anyways, i've got a couple of their samplers, and they generally have some pretty good bands.  if you like that sort of thing.

I hate to allude to the original topic of the thread, but I heard "Float On" on the radio today for the first time. I like it; yes, the lyrics are repetitive, but in a way that builds up a nice rhythm, and I like the content of the lyrics themselves. They've got that sense of zen optimism which I've long tried to cultivate, albeit with remarkably little success.

I've been reading this thread for a couple days.  y'all have now made me want more built to spill albums (I just have 'Nothing Wrong With Love' and 'Ancient Melodies of the Future') and a slint album (I have heard 'good morning, captain' which I like)!  I almost got a slint album tonight with this credit I had somewhere, but sadly it went over, so I got something else.

As for Modest penis... I wasn't keen on wanting to listen to them when I first got into the whole indie music thing... someone even kept recommending I buy Moon & Antarctica, but I was skeptical!  suddenly, this year, someone I trust for about 99% of my recommendations said they liked tracks 2&3 from the new album enough to play them over and over again thus I bought it.  it is pretty good, but yeah, I still don't find them good enough to make me extremely excited... just nice catchy tunes to put on every so often.  I sort've hold it in the same respect as Air's new effort.  take what you will of that.  heh.

I am getting Spiderland by Slint to see what they're like. Anyone rated that high I have to check out.
Modest penis I am still fairly sure from the talk that I will dislike, but I may check them out later too. I saw talk of them somewhere else yesterday though, may have been someones Soulseek share directory actually, but they only had one track from iTunes so I didn't bother.

Slint I have hope in, as I have discovered a few bands in the last few days I have liked.

Ok, well i guess it's about time i chime in here. but i'll keep it brief.

Modest penis: one of the best bands ever. really. so they're hometown heroes to me, so what. if you haven't given them a serious try, do it. but start w/ lonesome crowded or long drive, which is my favorite and prolly the best era. move on to moon and antartica, which is more mature, as far as songwriting, recording, and thematically. Good news...is also great, but is a big departure from the standard penis sound. Sad Sappy Sucker, the collection of really early stuff, is good if yr a fan, weird if yr not, and btw/ SOUNDS NOTHING LIKE BUILT TO SPILL. ok.

side note: the girl i had a huge crush on in high school denied me because she had an even huger crush on isaac, who she knew well thru her older brother. years later i am still friends with her, but never lay off her for a second about having a dumb rockstar crush at 16. cos i'm bitter.

Built to Spill: loved em. rad. Doug is killer. but...they haven't done anything i've really dug for a long time.

Slint: buy spiderland. it is essential. fuck i wish those guys didn't break up

Now the Built to Spill CD they gave me is another matter. Ditto for the Future Soundtrack for America (except the Yeah Yeah Yeah's song? Who the hell decided that recording was album quality?).

I love Modest penis's cds but I know exactly what you're talking about. I saw them in a small venue (less then 300 people) and it was all obnoxious frat boys. And they didn't play very well either, they seemed to be listless. I left halfway through the show and felt kind of bitter about it. I still like the cds though, and I hope to see a good penis show one of these days.

I got Keep It Like a Secret and There's Nothing Wrong With Love, IIRC.

I guess I expected Slint to be weird in a Pixies, Soul Coughing, early OK Go kind of way. But it reminded more of Radiohead with tiny quiet lyrics.

Oh, and I was listening to wnrn.org the other day and they do the craziest thing for radio. They fuck*ng identify the god damned songs they play! What a surreal concept! Shitty commercial broadcast radio, I'm looking at you!

Anyway, so they actually IDed the Franz Ferdinand song that for months now I thought was Modest penis. This changes my opinion of both bands.

Also, finalists (http://www.411mania.com/music/news/article.php?news_id=6023) for the Shortlist were announced and there are a few dandy acts on there. (For those who don't know the Shortlist Prize can only be awarded to albums that rock yet did not sell enough copies to go gold.)

Kick ass, Keep It Like A Secret is one of the best albums ever.  As is all other Built to Spill records, excepting maybe their most recent album.

Yeah, I don't think you could draw much of a comparison between Slint and goofy rock.  I don't see see Radiohead connection, but it is more of a quiet weirdness.

What is your opinion of FF and MM?  I had the FF album, for a week.  I hated it.  The single was great, but even that got old after a bit.  But I understand I am in the minority by not liking the album.

I haven't seen them in years, but way back in the late 90s, they were experiencing a slight surge in popularity.  The shows really started to suck at that point.  The all ages shows had a lot more annoying teenagers with cutesy MM shirts (and yes I was teenaged till 99)  and the 21 and over shows, I was told, had a lot of annoying drunk people dancing all crazy and pushing people and spilling beer.  But I thought their shows were hit or miss anyway.  Sometimes they just really sucked ass.

MM shows have been going sleddin' fast downhill for awhile. Now that they've got a video in heavy rotation on mtv, it's over, as far as crowds. MM shows used to be hit and miss on account of how drunk isaac got before the show; now it's a struggle to ignore 90% of the fuckdumbs who attend. It ain't so bad here in the NW, cos every single mofo has loved MM since 97 and have appropo respect at shows. But take the newfound annoyance factor of mtv mall kids and multiply that by show-in-random-midwest-town-bullshit and yeah, arr, me hates ye.

See, I'd never heard of Modest penis until this here thread.  I listen to the indie university radio stations, and the dj's are generally poor at being on the radio, and probably list off who they've played maybe about once every hour, then it's this long meaningless list, and they don't even bother with song titles, just all "track five, or maybe it was four..."  So then I went online, got the Float On video (can't play just music from anywhere at work, for some reason that's blocked in the office, but Launch music videos work fine) and I was like, "oh my god, I think I actually like this song!"  Flip to the next day, where I listened to the song maybe 8 times in a row.  I bought the "Good news.." CD, and brought it home.  Both my SO and I both liked it, and played it through twice.  Now the fact we both like it is crazy, cause my guy is all about the screaming punk music, and I'm all about folk music, and indeed this was the first non-folk music CD I've bought in well over a year.  We both had definitly heard Modest penis on the university station, but didn't know their name or any song names.  So we play it all the time now.  I was driving along a couple days ago when, I heard MM on the "wrong" station -turns out now the "all hits" station sandwiches Float On between Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake.  I like something they play on the regular radio.  How weird is that.

Also, I like the Franz Ferdinand song "take me out" anyone out there enjoying their albume, cause I almost picked it up, but I hate liking only one song, then finding out either a) the rest is shit or b0 everysong sounds exactly the same.

CortJstr (and someone correct me if I'm wrong): Affectedly precious, but not in an overwrought and fragile way, more like a "yeah we're cute in a way, and we know it and we show it, and we're nice and harmless too, and so, there" sort of thing.
That's what comes to my mind when someone says twee, anyway.

edit to update:
Quote from: "The Oxford English Dictionary"
  1. Originally: ‘sweet’, dainty, chic. Now only in depreciatory use: affectedly dainty or quaint; over-nice, over-refined, precious, mawkish.
1905 Punch 8 Mar. 178/1, ‘I call him perfectly twee!’ persisted Phyllis.  1917 M. T. Hainsselin Grand Fleet Days xv. 91 Girl: Oh, here's another little gun; isn't it a darling! Isn't it just too twee for words!  1947 E. Hyams William Medium viii. 164 ‘Isn't he twee!’ said Mary, and pinched his cheek.  1956 G. Durrell Drunken Forest x. 193 ‘What twee individuals?’ ‘Those knowledgeable sentimentalists who are forever telling me that it's cruel to lock up the poor wild creatures in little wooden boxes.’  1962 Observer 25 Mar. 25/3 She has a small and, it must be said, pretty twee cottage.  1967 E. I think they meant to say "deprecatory" and not "depreciatory". But it's gone back to being a sort of compliment, IMO-I've never heard it used in a context where I thought it was intended unkindly.

update to my update to correct myself: depreciatory is a word. Who knew?!
Quote from: "The OED"

Tending to depreciate; of disparaging tendency.

and deprecatory didn't mean what I thought it meant, which was "depreciatory". Instead it means
Quote from: "The OED"
     1. Serving to deprecate; that prays for deliverance from or aversion of evil.
1586 A. Day Eng. Secretary i. (1625) 21 Deprecatorie, in praying for pardon of a thing committed.  1622 Bacon Hen. It can't be described, I don't think. Lost in Space was a 1960's television show about a family named Robinson, more-or-less marooned in outer space with their spaceship, Dr named smith, and a large rubber-armed ***** named 'Robbie".

Yes, Jonathon Harris. As Dr Smith he was jumpy, paranoid and somewhat effeminate. I'm not sure what about the DeNiro picture exactly calls him to mind but it's pretty funny.

OH THE PAIN!!!

I saw Frank Zappa in St Louis in about 1985.  He did a whole schtick on stage on "Danger Will Robinson".  It was, well, Zappaesque.

I like that Franz Ferdinand song too.  I know about it cause the kids watch the video on Noggin (between episodes of those damn Canadian kids!)

There's a kids show called "Those Damn Canadians" now? Wow, society really has come a long way! First the Post printing "fuck" now "damn" in kids shows. Maybe we're getting over this lame "profanity" hang-up yet.

I love this message board, you know? From Modest penis to Dr. Smith.

(Also, I thought the "Lost in Space" ***** was just The *****? Robbie was from "Forbidden Planet," if'n I recall correctly.)

Oddly enough, according to IMDB, Robbie the ***** had a guest appearance on Lost in Space playing "*****" in one episode, but this doesn't appear to be the same ***** as in all the other episodes.  Maybe.

Also, Forbidden Planet kicks six kinds of ass (Leslie Nielsen is my hero).

Oh, yes, I remember that Simpsons epidsode too, but I know for certain I'm referring to a parody of "Lost in Space" on Family Guy.  I'd have to go how and flip through the DVD's to pin point which episode though.

As for Modest penis, since I really love "Good News for People who Love Bad News,"  which MM CD should I get next?  Suggestions?

Get The Moon And Antarctica. Good News is sort of a big change from the usual penis mopiness but M&A is at a similar level of polish, while still managing to be a loving catalog of depression.

I have no earthly idea! Did a search and it says TBA. I'm going to cross my fingers for the Hunches.

The day I go home Death Cab for Cutie and Pretty Girls Make Graves are playing - about 4 hours before I get there.

I saw Pretty Girls Make Graves, and they were great.  I have a crush on the lead singer, and have had one for quite some time, before the band formed.  Death Cab is boring live, I think.  But then again, they are boring studio too, I think.

So, the Modest penis show basically killed. I didn't have super high hopes, because a friend of mine saw them and said that Isaac spent the whole concert screaming the lyrics through a megaphone. It greatly exceeded my expectations, however. Isaac played guitar/banjo/mandolin, there was an upright bass and violin, they played all sorts of beautiful songs (if you like them). The only problem was that they didn't do Cockroach.

The Vells and the Thermals opened. The Vells are from Seattle. I think the main guy is new to this music thing, as it appeared that he was not a particularly accomplished guitarist, and he sang with a very strange vocal style, as if he were in the witness protection program. The Thermals are a local power pop/punk band. They were cool.

Va: My suggestion for your friend would be Lonesome Crowded West, The Moon & Antarctica, or Good News. And maybe you should get one of those, too, just in case your friend comes over and wants to listen to them.

Also, I wore the Lyle shirt. I was cooler than anyone there.

Oh, did I forget to mention this (http://www.ticketmaster.com/event/0F003A57C277CA30)? For $20 you can get yourself one, too. Any old connection to the internet will do.

Apologies to RVZ and the Freebird thread.

And it happens to be the rare event that I am actually home for this show.

I'd like to add here that Bob Dylan is playing two shows here, and seats are on sale for $50 per. Maroon 5 is playing a show here, and seats run $35 apiece.

Freedom has become slavery. Black has become white. It was necessary to burn the village in order to save it.

Post by: Nabubrush on February 25, 2005, 10:10:02 pm
I have never eaten there, but I think it happens pretty often that people who perform at the venue hold court there afterwards. IIRC, one of the guys from Franz Ferdinand hung out there after their show. It's pretty much just your standard brewpub-type place. I should be able to provide more info in the next few days, miles.

Here's (http://www.mcmenamins.com/index.php?loc=46&category=Location%20Homepage) what the company has to say.

Citysearch thinks this (http://portland.citysearch.com/profile/8463247/). And then there's this (http://www.nwbrewpage.com/Ringlers.html).
