Title: Character blogs, week of August 2
Post by: Carlos del Vaca on August 03, 2004, 12:55:12 pm
Looks like nobody in Achewood needs to work a real job--one just has to make bets with Ray.

I adore these blogs more than life itself, but I just can't read whole paragraphs about golf, even written by alive stuffed animals.  I just can't.

While I do not share your aversion to golfing paragraphs (mostly because I knew it was just another setup for Ray to lose his shorts despite his techno-overcompensation) I do find Teodor... odd. Not unnerving or unpleasant, just... odd. The amount of character development that 'stad is doing with his blog in particular is... I cannot put my finger on it. I wish I could.

See, this doesn't strike me as inconsistent with Teodor's characterization at all. Teodor has always been the kind of guy who wants to be classier than he is and has always sort of been a mixture of jealous and intimidated at Ray's appearance of classiness, but deep down Teodor sort of knows that Ray's all swagger. That he takes slight advantage of him is just sort of natural. It's the way that Ray is -- he can effectively be parasitized by everyone in the neighborhood and never notice or care.

It has occurred to me that Ray is aware that he's being taken advantage of, at least on some level.  It's his way of sharing his vast riches (you must admit that Ray is nothing if not generous) without seeming arrogant or offending his friends.

It's just a theory and probably ascribes to much thoughtfulness to Ray.

No, I can see it. I can entirely buy him being aware of it subconsciously -- one assumes he notices he's losing money in bets, that the beer and lunch meat from his fridge disappears constantly, etc. I'm not sure how much he ever consciously registers it, though, if only because that money he loses doesn't particularly matter to him. And if he does notice, he appears to cheerfully write it off -- there are not many kind things you can say about Ray, but one can praise his generosity unironically.

Only Beef would come up with a zero-sum theory of cancer. I wonder when Ray's friends will start investing in belts.

I seem to recall Ray always having a fascination of #####ing dolls.

OH YEAH...

We've seen bits of the blogs work their ways into the strip, but Teodor still wears the ugly shirt/pantaloons combo instead of the cool threads he talks about in his blog.  Maybe Chris is still learning to draw whiskered jeans, thin Adidas and Kangols.

Ray=Onstad's evil alter ego; the Alpha Male with all too much maleness.

Phillippe/Little Nephew are flip sides of a similar coin; Onstad's inner    child(ren).

I've actually pondered whether it would be interesting to study the most creative and highest-output artists who create characters. Actors, writers, cartoonists - and determine whether this group, in particular, has a higher propensity for fragmented personalities than the general population. It could be that they are just better at expressing aspects of their personality, but I bet there are some borderline shizophrenics/multiple personalities out there.

That would mean that Beef = Onstad's inner moping depressive.  Let's not even get into the Todd/Lyle axis.

So, if the characters are all just aspects of Onstad's personality and Achewood Estates is just a representation of Chris's character, what does that make Molly?  O's feminine side or Mrs. O?

This made me think of how innocent Phillippe is - like maybe his insane mother is also casually racist in day to day coversation (or quite possibly Lyle or maybe (?) even Ray is), and he's picked up on it, doesn't really understand it, yet still works it into the blog here.

What do you mean it's gone now?

It's in Philippe's blog.  And it's still there.

I too wonder about this "underwear that black people wear" thing. How does Philippe even know about human underwear?

Winner for now: "betting on maths." I want to know why Ray was so irritated about the square root of ten.

betting on maths- my guess is that ray assumed that the square root of 10 was pi/pie.  as in he's all out to eat with someone and being his fancy-doofus self and the waiter comes up and asks what they want for dessert and ray says "i'd like some delicious square root of ten" or somesuch, and the waiter looks at him like he's a retarded math geek, and the person with him finally has to say that that's not correct, etc.
so ray get's huffy and calls his butler to verify his veracity, and it turns out he's wrong, as usual.

fancy underwear:  in my experience, a good percentage of those who dress to fit the hip-hop genre, are wearing brand name underwear that costs more than my #####.  why do i know this?  because the Ethic Of the Genre dictates that you be Flossin' Yer Man Panties so that the world can see that you have expensive underwear.

That was how I understood it too, after the double take that that sentence induced.

I assume one of two things are at play here: either Ray can only play golf well when all split on green, or Nightlife was split enough/flattering enough/bad enough himself to imply that Ray has a good game where no such game is in place. Also, it seems entirely plausible that his long game has potential not to suck; he seems to keep choking on the short game.

Bets on how long it will take LN to totally disregard the latest tragedy and do something stupid and dangerous again? I give it one more entry.

The main thing about Teodor to me is that he seems to lack confidence quite a lot - not to a Beef extent where its in quite a self involved sense, going inside himself and sometimes getting to the point of self loathing as well as despairing about the whole of life - but in the sense he worries about what others will think of him and as V-adore says, often tries to appear classier and generally better than he is (or perhaps feels he doesnt show his qualities properly due to lack of confidence). As well as having similarites with Beef and Ray, just not being as extreme as them, Ive always thought of him as quite cultured, but again less so than Mr Bear this time.

Ray I agree with the idea he selfconsciously might realise the others take advantage, might even see it at some points and be a little sad, and will get a little angry he keeps losing. But ultimately I dont think he minds too much because I think Ray really quite values all his friends and wants to spend time with them. I think, whilst he is confident and brash, he can have some sad moments and even feels lonely at times, puts on a front quite a bit, hence often likes others around.

Whatevers in Phillipes blog, I pretty much always smile and laugh happily at it. Its all the exclamation marks, little sentences full of glee over such small things.

Oh for the love of all that's holy...  When I've been trying to get to sleep for about two or three hours and finally give up and decide to read Achewood blogs the last thing I want is to read about Lyle in a porn shoot with skanky cracked out porn chicks.

Boo to that.

I dunno, what's his last name? I can see reasonable porn compounds made of "Nacho" and a thoroughly punny surname. (Nacho Averageman, anybody?) But if his name is like "Nacho Torkelson" or something, someone needs career advice.
