I was just wondering this morning when the last time we've seen Philippe was. Also, have we seen Philippe in any context other than his campaign since he started his run?
-
I bet The Philippe Times can be had for just a penny so that EVERYONE can read it! You should never be too poor to read a newspaper!
Also, I'd like to read the caption and/or article that goes with the picture Philippe was drawing.
-
shrimp (any flavor). Yessssssss.
-
I'm wondering if Philippe had a dream about starting a newspaper.
-
Good to see more Philippe, and more campaigning. Not the best strip ever, but I chuckled at Roast Beef's sports page.
-
shrimp (any flavor). Yessssssss.
Yea, that and Beef's attempt at a sports column going so awry...
-
I just realized that I have no idea what the hell is up with Beef's sleeveless tee.
It puzzles me.
-
philippe is too cute. I want him to come and live with me in Boston.
Shaddup, you!
-
I just realized that I have no idea what the hell is up with Beef's sleeveless tee.
It puzzles me.
Thank you for that. I was likewise puzzled.
-
Isn't that such as what the punk-type kids would wear? We have seen Beef in a Dead Kennedys shirt, after all.
-
I think that's correct.
He got it from the bottom of his drawer, where he keeps it for when he's in just the right mood to wear it.
-
I'm wondering if Philippe had a dream about starting a newspaper.
that's one of my fav parts! its the definition of, "Phillipe woke up one morning and decided to start a newspaper." or anyone, doesn't have to be phillipe. or a newspaper, it could be "Bobby Blue Bland woke up one morning and decided to hauk into the microphone." or "Nas woke up one morning and decided to suck, but then a couple of years later woke up one morning and decided to rule." or [this doesn't get old] "One day Hamir woke up and decided to send reasons for hating intel via an email list dubiously delivered in an unmarked envelope." or, "Ray Smuckles woke up one morning and decided (to do just about anything - you never know, do you?)" or, "One day sawao yamanaka decided to make the pillows the greatest band ever." or, "A. Goodman, W. Morris, and H. Ray woke up one morning and decided to write 'when the morning comes' and then one morning the moments woke up and decided to sing it."
-
Gregor Samsa awoke from uneasy dreams to find he had been transformed into a gigantic newspaper.
-
Shaddup, you!
-
I'm wondering if Philippe had a dream about starting a newspaper.
Philippe had a dream.
A newspaper dream.
The sun has made a note of his face.
-
I, too, love "shrimp (any flavor)."
The cynical part of me wonders if we're going to see a "Philippe Is a Turtle" t-shirt any time soon, but as long as he doesn't get abducted this year, I'm happy.
-

What would be the crime in offering fans a garment with Philippe dressed as a turtle? This little candy factory doesn't run on "a cartoonist sold out by making a dime in this world!" messageboard posts. I've probably gotten 2,135 emails asking for Philippe/turtle designs today. Welcome to my inbox.
When Achewood exists solely as a means to selling disingenuous t-shirts, you'll know, because the strips will mainly be large stencil-art of phrases like "KOOL KEITH AND THE RIZZAH" with Paul Hamm smoking a pipe.
alright later

I NOW DESIRE THIS. MAKE IT AVAILABLE TO ME IN A VARIETY OF STYLES AND COLORS IMMEDIATLY.

Hmm, last year Philippe was a bee for halloween and that got made into a t-shirt. Chris informs us he has already recieved several requests to a Philippe as a turtle for this year. You know, apparel featuring little ol' Philippe in a halloween costume could become an annual tradition. Just saying.
Ain't nothin wrong with comerce, people.
-
True confession: I found the "Philippe is a Bee" shirt forced, overcutesy, and oversold to all hell. Very offputting.
That said, sell merchandise any way you want and the good Lord will provide, Mr. Onstad. And hey, depending on how cute the turtle outfit is, it might actually make a decent shirt.
-
sell merchandise any way you want and the good Lord will provide
I wonder if it's wierd for Onstad to have his own stuff quoted back to him.
I wonder too much.
-
I hereby demand a photographic collage of every c*ck and butt-cheek ever seen on Achewood. It doesn't have to be on merchandise. I just need a new desktop wallpaper.
I demand it!
-
Ha, this entire thread should just become us demanding increasingly bizarre and horrifying things from Onstad.
I DEMAND YOUR KIDNEYS!

This is good.
Do what you want, Chris. Sell what you want.
Say what you want people. Buy what you want.
Just get along. Please.
-
I like Chris fine -- otherwise, let's be honest, I probably wouldn't still be reading the comic -- but I reserve the right to disapprove of some of his merchandising decisions and say so here. I don't mean to start a fight or anything -- or to reopen this whole thing -- but I'd like to think we can all agree to disagree here on some stuff.
-
Aren't the strip and blogs really just commercials for the t-shirts and books anyway?
I mean, I like the strip and think it's worthwhile daily reading, but Onstad has never been ars gratia artis. He's looking to make a living doing something he likes.
What the hell is wrong with that?
DONT BE A HAT0R!!!!
-

This sounds defensive. I think we all agree you can 'disapprove' all you like. Once you put it out there other people have reserved the right to mock and ridicule you if they think you said something worthy of mocking and ridicule.
Also:
Chris, pleez cre8 an 8' x 10' tapestry of 'Pat' in hi$ 'Renfair' co$tume. If u could use ur own hair and hair from $ome of ur alive $tuffed animal$ that would be really c00l. I think it $hould be available but i doubt i would buy it. You r awe$omal.
-
You know, I probably would buy a wall hanging of Pat in his Renfaire costume. It'd be just goofy enough to fit more or less perfectly into my dorm's general design scheme. (Also, we have a guy who dresses basically like that, but unironically.) Actual hair from any residents of Achewood totally optional, of course.
-

...Onstad has never been ars gratia artis. He's looking to make a living doing something he likes.
Now you're just baiting me. When this started, I posted the strip sans-merchandise for many months before the mounting requests for books and shirts clued me in to the demand.
And talk about your backhanded compliments: Jough, you're like the guy at the party who tells the pretty lady that she "doesn't look very fat." Can someone send this guy a Carnegie book?
-
Just to be fair, I think Jough's question is probably easily generalizable: we all want to make a living doing what we like.
Whether Onstad was crazy enough to have a bunch of merchandise created and then decided to draw comic strips in order to sell it is another story.

Isn't that basically what Jim Davis did? I can just imagine him sitting around, with millions of these Garfield window suction toys, and being like, "But however will I SELL them?"
-
Isn't that basically what Jim Davis did?
I was pretty shocked when I found out about that. Only recently too.
It explained, in my mind at least, why I stopped liking Garfield when I got to about 10.
-
You liked Garfield?
Shit, man.
-

You think you know somebody, and then it turns out they drink blood, or like Garfield, or something.
Disclaimer: I was a huge Garfield fan until I was 10.

You people act as if there's an excuse for ever liking that strip.
Have some dignity in your lives, eh?
-

what, you've over and above garfield since you were 7?
my comic-appreciation-thing went from garfield to calvin&hobbes to maakies to achewood. (which curiously reflects happy hour to evening to night to last call)
-
Garfield used to be good, back in the elder days. I don't think it's any coincidence that those elder days (in which Garfield was enjoyable) correlate strongly with the days in which we were small children (who also have a predilection towards liking stuff like Garfield, even now).
This is a complicated way of saying: I liked Garfield when my age was in the single digits, too. Don't start talking to me about "dignity."
-
my comic-appreciation-thing went from garfield to calvin&hobbes to maakies to achewood.
Similarly I went from liking Peanuts and Garfield when I was a kid (partly because that's what I had access to from my parents or brother) to Calvin & Hobbes, which I do still like (along with Peanuts, can't really stop liking Peanuts...) and now to Achewood, Penny-Arcade and Goats which are pretty much the only strips I read anymore (as I am reading comics still - if you haven't started reading Whedon's Astonishing X-Men, then, well... yea!).

Thus the crux: It is within Jough's domain to say whatever the hell he pleases on "his" board, yet this board would not exist without Achewood. Much like the merchandise: can't have the achewood without the merchandise; can't have the merchandise without the achewood. Perhaps you should market compilations of backhanded compliments and barely concealed malevolance toward a moderately famous person; I'd pick Abe Vigoda myself, but it's your call.* Perhaps title it "Onstad contra Sal Tessio: Vitriol in Richtung zu Abe Vigoda und sein vile 'Dago'-stamm." Too late to ship for Columbus day, but maybe we can catch next year's fervor.
* Maybe you would prefer Don Cheadle.

oh hey ho, is this the "less mass-marketed the comic, the longer it is" dick-waving contest? can i join? let's talk about all the REALLY COOL AND AWESOME CRAP ARTFUL COMICS OUT THERE like:
Diesel Sweeties
Goats
Something Positive
Death to the Extremist
Dinosaur Comics
LOOK HOW ENORMOUS MY MEMBER IS! I am going to use my pirated copy of Cubase to make some TOTALLY ORIGINAL electronic music to a 4/4 beat. I am a FREE SPIRIT. NO ONE ELSE DOES THIS. See, I will ensure my originality by heavily referencing 80's pop culture.*

so i've been going through a bunch of boxes of pack-ratted crap/really-important-things, and i found my old garfield books. i would suggest that jim davis' work _is_ funny, but that the humor loses much after considerable exposure.
i loved peanuts as a child, and then i didn't like it as i grew "older". now that i'm growing older-older, i find i appreciate parts of it that i didn't even realize existed upon first exposure.
i loved goats when i first found it, read the archive that existed at the time, but just don't find it compelling enough to read daily. i'll go back and "catch up" every once in awhile, but i don't feel as though i'd be missing anything if i didn't.
i find PA to be editorial, and in that way while it is always the same old same old, it's at least the same old same old applied to new things.
i generally find myself compelled with figuring out what is going on with the characters, and once i find i "know" them, i grow bored with them, i guess. which is why achewood has such a hook in me, since character insights are constantly doled out in tiny yet satisfying increments. plus onstadt's ability to generate so many distinct voices.

Indeed. Onstad's up there with Jean Shepherd and Garrison Keillor, as a storyteller. That's the difference between Achewood and Garfield, which, on a good day, is sort of amusing.
-
I'm really just terribly confused at this point. Am I allowed to like both Achewood and Diesel Sweeties? Am I allowed to like Achewood given that I used to like Garfield? Is there some sort of trigonometric equation I can plug this all into?

I HAVE DONE IT, WITH BOOLEAN!
Hooray! Now I can calculate the exact vector required to be a cool kid! :D
Also, I love the phrase "I Have Done It, With BOOLEAN!" I sort of want it on a t-shirt.
-
We should start offering Achewood Message Board shirts, that would say "DUE TO PUNISHMENT" or "HOORAY FOR BOOLEAN" and stuff.
Oh yeah.

You can like whatever the hell you want. I just find the need to compare against something the quintessential sign of insecurity. You like Achewood, that's great. But why trash Garfield (even in the backhanded well i used to like it, but like all people i grew out of it way) ?. I've often found people who like "web comics" tend to trash traditional media to justify their choices.

I just....I view Jim Davis as the guy who started the whole idea of "Mondays as comedy," in which every 3rd comic is basically just someone saying, "ARGH! MONDAYS!"
THIS IS THE PRIMARY FORM OF COMEDY TODAY.
But I think we've been pretty cruel to web-based comics too, right? I'm not going to CortJst'r this, but didn't we shit all over Something Positive a while ago, and we were more or less ambivalent regarding Diesel Sweeties.

Even handed cruelty doesnt really make the negativity any better. I've found in my travels that some people "grok" Achewood and others don't. Same goes for Garfield, Diesel Sweeties or whatever. I personally think Garfield is hilarious, because its not that Mondays Suck, it's how many ways Mondays suck. Repetition can be funny. I also find Dinosaur Comics to be quite hilarious. I find Achewood hilarious. This doesn't mean that I will go out of my way to disparage the Boondocks, or Diesel Sweeties or whatever.
-

indeed i _am_ "one of 'them'". i will leave it as an excercise to determine which "them" i "am".
also, your explanation is not.

Well... I can only speak for myself, but I did like Garfield and then grew out of it. I would humbly submit that this is for two reasons: Garfield has gotten progressively less good, and I have grown away from the age and maturity level to which Garfield most appeals. YMMV, of course, and if you still like Garfield as an adult, hey, that's your right.
I didn't mean it as some sort of slagging of print comics -- there are several print comics I still enjoy a lot. (Foxtrot is funny, and Zits still hits home a little more than I'm totally comfortable with.)
-
I never liked Garfield the comic strip. The animated series was pretty good. Anybody who disparages Peanuts deserves a beating.
Now, you must all acknowledge the correctitude of my opinions.

I like traditional comics plenty. Peanuts remains one of my favorites to this day, and Calvin & Hobbes always has a place in my heart somewhere or other. I never "grokked" Garfield.
Never thought people on this forum would be sensitive. Yeesh.
EDIT: Mondays rule.

My two cents on this comics-snobbery tip:
Diesel Sweeties I read because (a) it is updated daily and I seem to have made a habit out of it and (b) it is very occasionally funny. I hate myself for reading it, though, because every single one of its characters needs to be pounded in the face with a shovel until they are dead. And I imagine (where "imagine"="infer based upon admittedly and happily limited experience") that the lion's share of Diesel Sweeties fans are shallow and insufferable in the exact same goddamned ways as those characters. OH HO, SEX PUNS AND INDIE ROCK! I WILL FORWARD THIS TO PEOPLE WHO MAKE ME FEEL COOL FOR KNOWING THEM
Garfield is a one- or two-trick pony, but occasionally those tricks are very good indeed. I'm not going to defend Jim Dav^H^H^H Paws, Inc's entire fuck*ng oeuvre like I would Peanuts (which, even when repetitive, felt cumulative and alive), but boiling it down to "I hate Mondays ROFL" is sort of missing the point, which is one-liners you can smirk / smile / laugh at and relate to.
Plenty of print comics are great, you incredible assholes. (Offer not valid where the reader is not, in fact, an incredible asshole.) I refer you to Pearls Before Swine, Get Fuzzy, and Monty - for starters. Foxtrot, Calvin and Hobbes, and Peanuts were already mentioned, have stood the test of time for years, and don't need my jerkwater defense.
Achewood and Penny Arcade are similar, in my opinion, in that they would be nowhere without the sharp writing. As we've batted around before, Achewood is the output of a writer who happens to create comic strips. And Tycho's literate and witty news posts are the best reason to regularly read Penny Arcade. (Compare with certain other news posts that boil down to "someone on some other website doesn't like me {link} but I'm far too cool to be at all bothered by it -- P.S. Looks like we wanged their server LOL")
Generally speaking, I like to like things, and I like to tell people about things that I like. With a few exceptions, I can't understand why people get so frothy about popular entertainment, as though the idea of many people at once enjoying any given Thing is just intrinsically incorrect and nauseating. I mean, ripping apart a Jerry Bruckheimer movie is one thing, but Family Circus makes grandmothers everywhere smile with a warm and reassuring feeling of recognition.
-
Well, I've got a new sig.
-
Damn people, look what happens when I'm offline for one fricken weekend.
In general: What Zartan said.
Specifically: I think many people stopped liking Garfield because it's all done by a staff now, not by Davis. And I agree this probably had an effect on strip quality but there are some recent ones that still make me laugh out loud (I LOVE BACON!!!) Also, each character serves only one purpose/personality-type which is very limiting over the years. People talk about Achewood's voices because each character seems very real and fully fleshed out. Teodor isn't just the one who cooks or the voice of reason. He's much more complex than that. Garfield characters couldn't keep up blogs.
I consider Diesel Sweeties a guilty pleasure. Not unlike watching wrestling or reading trashy books/magazines. I think it's target audience is people who really are IRP or Electron Mike but pretend to hate people like that. They like seeing Lil' Sis zing IRP for being a loser but if you read the message board they agree with him on a lot of points. Sometimes that's cool, sometimes they're right, sometimes they get on my nerves. But I think the strip loses a lot if you aren't in that target audience.

Well, when i was a small child i would shit my #####, and i don't remember it bothering me at all. You could say that I've grown out of that and am pretty much not at all down with shitting my #####.
