I haven't tried to make this; it's something "Uncle Joey" brings whenever we have work potlucks and he's retiring. He's from Hong Kong and we'll miss him but I'm thinking I'll try to keep the coffee jello tradition alive here. Please try this and let me know if you like it (and if you have problems)...thankfully the ingredients are pretty cheap...

Anyone ever try coffee jello? It's sort of a Japanese kind of thing.
You need:
some salt
Coffee and coffee maker
small box of Knox gelatin
hot water
lemon
sugar
sweetened condensed milk
Brew a small pot of hot coffee having thrown a small dash of salt on the grounds. Do not attempt to make this recipe with instant coffee.
Dissolve the knox gelatin into 1/3 cup of hot water. Add 1 1/2 cup hot coffee. Add also 1/3 cup sugar and a squeeze or two of lemon juice, make sure it's all mixed well and the gelatin is all dissolved.
Let it set in the refrigerator. Serve it with sweetened condensed milk on top. Also good is heavey cream with some Kahlua mixed in. I imagine there are many good topping ideas out there; caramel might be a nice flavor and/or mocha.

Sounds good to me.

Coffee is already on the canonical list of Jello Flavors That Should Never Be (http://www.bigfool.com/bwg/jello.htm). So there.
-
I find coffee horribly repellent as a beverage, let alone combined with congealed translucent ground-up ruminant soles.
-
This is great stuff, seriously. Would AlohaDawg steer you wrong? I eat it all the time, but I don't make it myself. I buy it in little containers from the Japanese market.
Coffee jello is also a traditional Rhode Island delicacy, oddly. You can buy the powder in a box, like Jello but it's some local brand. They are very into coffee flavored things there, or at least they used to be - coffee ice cream is very big, and you can buy coffee syrup that's like chocolate syrup.

I will share this tidbit with my daughter. For some reason she is oddly obsessed with Rhode Island. It's where she wants to take our next vacation.
Also, I now remember that the Collonade, a cafeteria in downtown Louisville located in the basement of '20s era office building and popular with office workers, had coffee jello.

2- i assume whaever "flavor" packet came with the gelatin i do not use it
3- do you have to put cream on top / is the cream on top put there to mask some inherent evil?

Dude, there are no rules! If you don't follow the recipe exactly the food cops won't come and throw you in jail. Fix it the way you like it!

Make her a box of Kraft macaroni and cheese, then dump a small can of tuna giraffe into the pot and mix it up. That's a little taste of Rhode Island right there. Especially if you add a little can of those LeSuer peas to it as well.

Ark, Knox gelatin is flavorless. You could use another brand, but I don't know if any other company makes it.

1) What wombat said
2) if you buy gelatin that has the flavor separate, yeah, just use the gelatin part
3) It's pretty much like coffee. I bet it would be good with kalua and cream poured over it, or Brendans Irish cream, or caramel, or even chocolate.
Reminder in the summer all the magazines have goofy ads for all different kinds of jello desserts? How about you fill a parfait class 1/3 full with the jello liquid and lean it up against the side of the fridge, let it set and put in like whipped cream or other color jello, etc..
Whip up some heavy cream with a splash of brandy or bourbon or kahlua and alternate that with the coffee jello. I bet that would make a jim-dandy dessert.

if there are no rules then only outlaws will follow rules.
insight into my ability to create new food dishes:
make ramen,
add mozarella cheese,
add cut up chicken nuggets,
salt, pepper, do i have any garlic powder left??
i can not fix it the way i like it if i don't know how i like it. and by "can not" i mean i am frozen with an inability to enact cooking forces without either a) a recipe or b) random things laying around the freezer needing to be eaten. i do not keep jello in my house.

magazines? ads? jello? the last magazine i had a subscription for was MacAddict and that was back when Power Computing was "da bizomb".
parfait glass??? look up "cultured" in a thesoris, go to the antonyms, and you will see me waving "hi!". the only aesthetic criteria for food i cook is "if i look at it, will it make me ill?"
however, i agree 100% that liquor can make anything better.

I think that this would be better stated:
If Laws are outlawed, only outlaws will have laws.
Even better:
If in-laws are outlawed, only outlaws will have in-laws.
Which would make me slightly happier lifewise.
Also, Ark, one way you could look like Mr Cool Gourmet would be to have a special lady over for your famous mozzarella chicken surprise described above and serve this jello, made in a coffee cup with her choice of yummy cream and liqueur on top. Keep barrier methods of contraception handy.

False untrue or false fallacious?

The next sentence is false.
The prior sentence is true.

There's no reason to start that sort of thing.

We need a reason?
