pat, you're a dick.
-
A racist dick no less.
-
What's racist about his comment? It may be accurate or inaccurate; to tell you the truth I've never paid attention to Mexicans and their cars. But how is the comment racist?
-
Don't pick on me you nazi!
It just seems like the sort of thing a closeted-racist would say as a means of justifying their inherent bigotry and small-mindedness.
Hey, if you wanna back up Pat and his cavalcade of ignorance please, be my guest, but just don't expect me to sew your white sheets together or to tie your nooses for the next coon-lynchin'.

I think the "don't you lie to me" is what confirmed Pat's identity.
-
I've never had issues with Mexicans taking too long to get in their cars. However, I used to live next to a Salvadorean neighborhood. Sometimes I drove through it in the mornings, on a street with garden apartment buildings, and head-in parking on both sides of the street. ALWAYS and without fail, those stopping to pick up others would double-park and block traffic, rather than pull into a space, even when half the spaces were empty. I have always wondered what the hell was up with that.

What's racist about his comment? It may be accurate or inaccurate; to tell you the truth I've never paid attention to Mexicans and their cars. But how is the comment racist?
It's racist in that it seems to be "a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human races determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one's own race or color is superior." I don't know what Pat's race is, but if he's not Mexican and just being ironic, I'd say it was pretty racist. Really, are you a closet racist? "No, I just tell it like is." I imagine that's how Pat would respond to such a question. The real idea behind Pat's comment is that Mexicans are lazy. You really don't see that as racist?

I'm suddenly picturing "The More You Know" segment from Family Guy. "What? Canada sucks."

is "mexican" meant racially or culturally.
perhaps pat is a "culturalist" rather than a "racist".
also,
i would posit that from what little i've seen of pat's thoughts etc that he would not be of the belief that his race or demographic is superior to any other, but that _he_ himself is superior to any other personage, singular or of a group.
as such, is one who feels singularly and individually superior to each and every single other entity a racist or simply an extreme egotist?
it would seem to me that racism is a crutch used to prop up one self's poor individual self concept on the notion that while individually the person may not be worth shit but that as a member of a superior race that they therefor are superior.
pat does not, to the extent that i have seen, seem to have any problems with a poor self-concept.
on the other hand, his self-righteousness may very well stem from a belief in his own racial superiority.
to wander further from pat, however:
as i understand it, racism is "bad". ie, to make a determination as to an individual based upon raciallity.
is "culturalism" bad, then?
to make the statement that "members of the mexican race take too long to get out of cars" is intrinsically racist since the maker of the statement is assuming that the consequences of the individual stem from raciallity.
to make the statement that "members of the mexican culture take too long to get out of cars" is not racist, though, it is culturist.
it is a mistake to consider that race is determing factor in individuals.
is it a mistake to consider that culture is a determining factor in individuals?
to wander back to pat:
a joke:
pat is such an asshole.
how much of an asshole is pat?
pat's such an asshole that he shoots someone, runs away, hides, and then calls into a radio show to make a broad statement about a large collection of demographically aligned people because he was, possibly, inconvenienced by one member of said group while trying to get away from the crime scene.

Slink, Brat owners - for some crazy reason - seem to prefer raise their Brats up off the ground on big ol' monster wheels (http://memimage.cardomain.net/member_images/6/web/678000-678999/678594_14_full.jpg). (This authoritative-sounding generalization brought to you by three minutes of ham-fisted Google searching.) I don't know why - lowriding around in a Brat would be awesome, especially if it had those seats in the back actually facing backwards.
Speaking of generalizations and racism and such - I think a lot of people make racist comments when they actually intend to malign a particular culture. The way I understand it, anyway - when Pat (for example) says that Mexicans take forever to do things with their cars, I doubt he believes that they're genetically predisposed to this behavior. The human genome is a marvelous and mysterious thing, but that is getting fuck*ng specific.
EDIT: In the time I took putting in all those fuck*ng italics, arkabee basically beats me to the punch. Nicely done.
-
I don't think this comment makes Pat a racist in and of itself, but given his previous strange emphasis on race (I'm thinking of his "Chinese people are hiding things from me" blog post and the mention of the mailman's ethnic descent (http://journeyintoreason.blogspot.com/2004/07/i-am-going-to-use-all-my-money-to.html) in his "arresting the mailman" post), it definitely gives one a feeling.
On the other hand, all the given evidence pretty much proves at this point that Pat is in fact a super homo jackass, so.
-
What I got:
Yeah, Pat's a dick, and I enjoy it somehow. My question is, what is up with Téodor's left eye? It's like he's all broke up.
Also, Zartan, 500th post, it must be the week for milestones.

Except that 'Mexican' is an ethnicity, not a race. His comment may be xenophobic but not racist according to your definition. More importantly, this is a comic strip about a bunch of cartoon cats so before you guys start competetively writing yellow manifestos in the snow, let's all grab a big double handful of reality, shall we?

Ha, I don't think anyone was really thinking Pat's a secret KKK member, I just think it's a weird part of his personality, that fits with the rest: of COURSE Pat has some really bizarre, random thing against Mexicans.
I like how Pat is also vaguely "liberal" (i.e., I pick up a lot of macrobiotic nutrients at Trader Joe's, a chain of socially-conscious grocery stores which carry a more enlightened line of product than your average Safeway or Albertson's.). but he's still a huge cock. Who the hell goes on about socially-conscious grocery stores when you're pissed at a dude for losing his foot?
Cock.

Well he shops there but when he gets home he bitches about how all the customers walk around with iPods on and can't here you say "excuse me"*
Also I get the impression that Pat is just elitist in general. He shops at Trader Joe's so that he can casually point out that he shops at Trader Joe's. I'm sure this also has an immense effect on what movies he sees and where.

Trader Joe's is a friggin' ripoff. I shop there occassionally but I don't trust a grocery store that doesn't have an on-site butcher and tank full of angry crustaceans. Via Whole Foods/Harris Teeter/Sutton Place Balducci's/Gourmet Giant (the latter may be regional)

Oh, come on! Now you're not even playing the game! Anyway, race is such an elusive term. In a class we are studying Nietzsche right now, and he uses the word race all the time to refer to what we now call ethnicity or even nationality. More recently, I read a publisher's reaction to a harsh review of a book by a Swiss author. The reviewer was called "racist against the Swiss." It was a bogus claim because the reviewer wasn't bigoted in any way, but it was understood what the publisher meant. It's not like there is a solid scientific defintion for what race is. Or is there?
Also, I doubt racism developed because people felt bad about themselves. There are lots of theories of what racism is and how it developed. One interesting one is an economic theory, that it developed to justify slavery. But today it generally means putting a race/ethnicity down by using stereotypes.
I didn't call Pat a racist. At least I don't think I did. He's a talking cat. But the comment seems racist, or at least an example of thinly veiled racism (bigotry, whatever).
But yeah, he's a dick.

My cats' breath smells like cat food.

Using Nietzsche (who, along with H.L. Mencken, is one of the coolest curmudgeons around) to justify applying race to ethnicity is a little fallacious. There's a reason why philology as a field is no more and has divorced into linguistics and ethnology.

I've heard several people list Harris Teeter as an upscale grocery store which always confuses me. The only HT I've ever been in was no different than a Giant. Of course it was way nicer than the shit-hole they called Kroger.
I believe Giants are still regional. Until 3 years ago it was family-owned by somebody in Maryland. But a larger company bought them and made a few changes (notably adding Toys-R-Us aisles and self-check-outs) but I don't think they've expanded the brand much beyond the beltways.
Personally I think that Whole Foods without coffee/juice bars are just a cruel hoax and must be stopped.
-
Try living in a place where the biggest gourmet/natural food section is in . . . Safeway.

Harris Teeter has higher-quality produce IMO; they sell sashimi-grade giraffe (ask their giraffe counter!) which is generally a sign of swank. Plus they have the imported beer section where you can buy a variety of belgian fruitlambics and He-Brew, the Chosen Beer (comes in two varieties; Genesis Ale and Messiah Stout. No, I am not kidding). I am referring to the one in Reston.
Hands down, the best place still are the gourmet giants.

Sterling is one of those suburban places thats' too far out to be hip, but tries very hard to increase its hip value and attracts people like Pat. No offense to your parents, unless they habitually shoot people, befriend serial killers and are pretentious bigots in pork pie hats.

I love how half this thread is a discussion of the nature of racism as it relates to ethicity and nationality and the other half is about grocery stores. Shine on, you crazy diamonds! To hit both halves:
* Honestly, do we have any evidence that Pat doesn't think that things like "opening car doors slowly" is genetic? Pat seems like the sort of guy who assumes that all negative traits are hardwired in the genes; it's an excellent excuse to oppose rehabilitation programs and cultural understanding. (And by "the sort of guy who assumes that all negative traits are hardwired in the genes," I of course mean "dickwad.")
* I grew up on and still have a soft spot for Safeway, although I also miss the Fred Meyer of my youth. Nowadays, well, Brookshire's is very nice when I'm home, and Hy-Vee, while stupidly named, was relatively reliable back in Nebraska (as opposed to flaky-ass IGA and the worst Albertsons in the free world). At college, all we have is Stop and Shop and Price Chopper, chains I resolutely do not understand. I've been to Trader Joe's a few times and was thoroughly underwhelmed, although the SO swore on it for a while when they still carried vile aloe-based beverages.
EDIT: Images cut out of thread because of random moderator fiat.

They still do! And it was during this time period that I bought aloe, thinking, well gee, aloe in my shaving cream smells so nice, i wonder how it tastes! Then, I buy a gallon of aloe juice. .Then, chug-a-lug. Then I find out it is a laxative.
Grr.

They do? Is this a west-coast thing? All the Boston ones appear to have discontinued it. Also, can you order it online? If so, I may have found the SO's Christmas present*, as well as a festive treat for the college January Parties once I get back. ("See, I told you this stuff exists. I TOLD YOU NOW FEEL MY PAIN")

i don't know how racism developed, but i have first hand experience in how it is enacted/utilized.

I don't think anything as complicated as economics is involved. Everyone I've ever met who was racist was ignorant and scared and generally incapable of recognizing that their opinion was hateful and wrong. usually due to social support for the opinion.
Racism sucks.

Aren't we all being a bit harsh on Pat for being a racist? I'm not defending him - anything Pat Reynolds says or does is, by definition, wrong, evil and just fucked up. But by reading this thread, one might get the impression that Pat and Pat alone is a bigot. Need I remind you that Ray has said some pretty insulting things about Scottish Folds? I mean, if it's wrong for a cat to be racist against certain human ethnic groups, isn't it also wrong for a cat to be racist against other breeds of cats?
-
Ray's also referred to dogs as sub-sentient. But at least he buys his cars for his friends and such.

-
Except that dogs actually appear to be sub-sentient in the Achewood universe -- unless you count Scrambles, I don't think we've ever seen a dog capable of speech, and other evidence indicates that they may in fact not be capable of it. Many questions.

We were just there on Sunday. It's nice in its way, and definitely a good store for a leisurely gourmet browsing rather than a workaday list-based grocery run. Great bakery, good giraffe, an actual butcher counter, terrific selection of wine and cheese, decent produce. And a wide selection natural/organic stuff.
On the other hand, it ain't cheap. Your money goes way farther at Giant, Safeway, or HT. (Which, by the way, I agree is slightly more upscale than Giant or Safeway, but not so hoity-toity as Whole Foods. I shopped at the HT on Glebe Rd. in Arlington often when I lived in that way, and I miss that store now.)

Racism sucks.
I don't know either, just a theory I read that was interesting. I mean, we all know racists that are dumb and ignorant, but not all racists are dumb and ignorant (well, maybe ignorant). Also, just because something develops in a certain way doesn't mean it will always continue as such. Anyway, my whole point was to defend cellardoor calling Pat's comment racist, because Drew Barrymore likes the phrase cellar door. Most shit I just pull out of my ass.
And I'm also glad to see Pat again. There's always trouble when he comes around.

Also, I just watched the Apache thing. It's a shame they don't make videos like that anymore.

This ought to be good.
I'll be here for you, Asher - I don't have anything to do for the next 10 hours or so. Well, other than work, and that's not particularly likely.

I just rewatched it on a faster machine. The horror, the horror.
I think my favorite part is when he puts one finger up like he's about to make a point and then sings "Ohh ohh wohhhhhh oh oh". That's gold.

the video kind of made me queasy. it may very well represent my personal feelings as to the archetype of anti-music.

I didn't actually see much of that video. I clicked on the link and all, but I, I, I just couldn't look straight at it. The video was THAT DISTURBING.
APAAACHEEEEE!!!!

I'm curious, how can all of you be so terribly wrong about that video? Hmmmm?
-
I think I've given up clicking links after the poodle workout video I clicked through from a music forum I am registered on. It was... My eyes are still bleeding strange Japanese ooze. And my brain refuses to work.

Fringed outfit? Check.
Scantily clad ladies? Check.
Tiered keyboard stand? Check.

Possibly offensive song concept? Certainly.
Apache has everything!
