Title: a concerned fan
Post by: philelly on December 23, 2004, 11:51:15 pm
Dear chris,
I'm a longtime fan, clothing buyer, serializer member, etc etc.  I loved the strip, but lately i think it lacks its former punch--i don't laugh out loud anymore.  has the direction of the strip changed?  are you spending less time on the strip, in favor of your business ventures, blogs, etc?  i love the blogs and other humor on the site, but i hate to see the strip suffer, because it is really the heart of the site, as well as the first thing that new visitors read.  you should devote your energy on what you see fit, but I think you should be aware of this perceived trend; I'm posting this here because I don't think I am alone in noticing this.

To those on the board: If you disagree, just don't post anything and this thread will disappear naturally.  I really don't want anyone to flame.

Sincerely,
A Concerned Fan

edit: added poll.  if you disagree, please let me know via the poll.

Please don't take this as a flame, because it isn't.  If you've been around here long at all you'll realize that we accept (welcome?) negative opinion as well as positive.  So you are free to express that thought in this forum as far as I'm concerned.

However.

I don't agree.  I think the strips lately have been wonderful.  Just this week, the manes thing has been great.  As far as the blogs go, I see them as another window in the Achewood -- another way to learn more about the characters and goings on in Achewoodlandtown.  To me, that's hardly a bad thing.

Phil, I can't get behind this. I love all of Mr. Onstad's work, and i just want him to like me.

Actually, I think the flavor of the strip has changed, but I don't think it is suffering any. I think we periodically see some of the old feel of the strip, but mostly I think he is stretching more now, and, as someone who has been reading since Nov/Dec 2001, I enjoy the whole Achewood experience more now than I ever did. I was going to say that I think it would be hard to give someone a single recent strip and expect them to "get" Achewood, but then I went back through and looked at this (http://www.achewood.com/index.php?date=12102004). Only two weeks old, and a perfect stand-alone strip.

Having said all that, please don't think that we reject a reasoned, well-thought-out addition to the discourse here just because it is critical. Criticism is welcome, certainly. Trolling, which we've all seen plenty of here and at the old place, basically drives me away for a while. So, welcome and happy holidays, philelly.

Any creative artist who's been around a while gets crap like this. I've been getting emails telling me I've "jumped the shark" or "just plain lost it" since about October 2, 2001.

Seriously, folks, I never even had it in the first place. Stop e-mailing me.

That's funny, cause that's the exact strip I showed my mom in an attempt to convert her to Achewood fandom. She laughed, though I don't know if she reads the strip every day now.

I don't think the strip has been up to par in say, the past two weeks, but that hardly represents a *trend*.

And there's a lot to like about even the recent strips.

Every artist will have a slump from time to time, but that's the price of free entertainment.

The strip hasn't really been as *edgy* in the past few months as it had a year or so ago, so maybe that's what you're picking up on.  But it's still bringing "the funny," sitting it down at the kiddie table, and cutting up its meat into bite-sized chunks.

Think of how badly some entertainers that require payment have slumped!

I'll leave the exercise of filling in specific entertainers to the reader, as your results may vary. But you know exactly whom I'm talking about.

I for one think Achewood hasn't jumped any sharks, nor do I see it doing so anytime soon. I just needed to say this seeing that tommorow is Christmas, today is Christmas Eve and yesterday was Festivus.

So to Chris I say: Thanks and Happy Holidays.

Yeah, I loved the mane strips, and I've recently gotten a bunch of friends hooked on the 'water, simply from the "Fuck THIS guy!" strip (http://www.achewood.com/index.php?date=11052004). So far, I'm riding the 'stad train to Hilarityville. Something IS different, I think, but it's not a bad thing. It's just a wee bit different. If anything, I think 'stad is just evolving as a storyteller.
Anyway, yeah. Keep on keepin' on.

True that.  Some wanker (http://www.websnark.com/archives/2004/08/daily_comics_tr_1.html) laid an interesting description on 'wood that has some points.  We're getting the benefits of an experimental process here.

I'll buy that analogy.  Onstad's a reglar Nightlife Mingus-arooni.

Curse of the internet this is.
A million AICN talkbacks.
A thousand forums expounding how the A-team never really got "it" back after the boy george episode.
I'm not sure if I dislike the internet or just dislike people.

This sort of reaction always confuses me.  I've deeply enjoyed the strip lately, but certainly there have been times where I've found Achewood to take a turn I didn't like.  Still, I never thought, jeeze, I'm gonna write and open letter to Onstad to complain.  This is like writing a letter of complaint to the mail carrier because he didn't quite close the mail box all the way when he delivered your mail one out of five days this week.  Onstad did his job by delivering the strip, and he (or anyone else) is not psychic to the point of knowing the exact formula for pleasing all of the people all of the time.

Well, I agree with the sentiment of this post but I have to accept that in an open forum, as in a free society, everyone has an aopportunity to say/do things.  There are homeless guys cooking pigeons on the public grills in Chicago and lads in ##### with the ass cut out dancing in California, and plenty of people getting plenty of private stuff pierced, and investment bankers with seven digit incomes paying to be diapered and powdered and to make a mess in their #####.  It's a pretty diverse world, with a lot of points of view, and most of us figure everyone else but us is crazier or more misguided than we are. Celebrating diversity is a lot harder than hyper-politically correct people would have you think.

I'm sad this forum is like this, I was happy when I saw a link to it as I thought it would be people discussing a comic they like, why do you bother with all this hating? Surely you can't have lives that worthless that you have nothing better to do then read a comic you don't like all that and then moan about it on a forum. weirdos!!!!!! i don't even know you but i hate you!!!!

Obviously you have reading comprehension issues.  The vast majority of responses in this thread are highly positive.  Pretty much every post I read disagreed with the OP that Achewood has been in a slump recently.  Read what I wrote, for instance.

Did you read any other threads on the board before making your broad generalization?  Also, what does discussion mean to you?  We all love Achewood here.  But never does every strip  means the same thing to everyone.  I don't love them all equally.  Not every comic is aesthetically equal.  Shakespeare wrote both Cymbeline and Hamlet.  I think one is better than the other.  We're effusive with our praise, but no artist should be exempt from criticism.

Also, it's bad manners to come into someone's house and shit on the floor.  Don't like it here?  Fine, stay the hell away.  It's more than a little rude to introduce yourself by insulting us.  Consider yourself warned.

I just knew somebody would call me out on this.  All right, I admit it.  I've never even read Cymbeline.  It's just widely reputed to be the worst of Bill S.'s plays.

Oh it's way bad. We just choose to interpret it as bad on purpose. So if it's performed like a Mel Brooks movie it comes off as funny.

There's nothing wrong with this. Even had you not read either, it would be ok to think that one is better than the other. I think Canterbury Tales is better than Valley of the Dolls, but I haven't read either of those.

Either that or Websnark confused Onstad with Buddy Rich.
