Anybody else played this? We saw a review of it, so we got it to go with our new PS2. Wackiest. Game. Evar. I'd be interested in knowing what somebody else thinks of it.
-
I like this game a lot. It's fun and unusual, and the quirky humor is a supplement to the solid and genuinely original game play rather than propping up a weak game with sheer force of weirdness. It probably says something that a sequel was announced and I can only think of two possible improvements to gameplay (other than the obvious "more places to roll around and things to roll over", of course.)
-
Yeah, I'm totally hooked. I've been playing for one day and I'm already looking forward to the sequel. What are the improvements you've thought of?
-
The first is a fully connected setting: the ability to first roll around the house, then out into the street and around town, and then out into the world. Given how much scale-changing the game does already, having house/town/world so sharply divided seems strange. It wouldn't even be hard to do, since it's just an extension of how the game already handles areas, and I think it would add more fun to the game.
The other is a play-control tweak: assign "dash" to one of the unused shoulder buttons instead of the wiggle-back-and-forth thing. While I don't mind having the dash take practice to sustain, what I do mind is that with the current system it's almost impossible to start a dash without the game deciding you're telling the prince to turn before it realizes you're doing a dash command, so you (or I, at least) inevitably end up dashing in almost but not quite the intended direction.. not so bad if the reason I'm dashing is just to cover ground quickly, but some of the bonus presents require fairly precise ramp-dashing to reach.
And, of course, more places and things to roll up. The initial promo shots include one of the katamari being rolled around inside a classroom, so at least that wish is going to be fulfilled.
-
Very good ideas indeed. I don't use the dash much anyway. Perhaps I would if it were easier to do.
-
I got this for Christmas and I love the hell out of this game. Agreed that the dash is the game's only real stumbling block, control-wise; with everything else in the game going down as smooth and soul-ticklingly warm as an Irish coffee, not being able to pull off one of the Main Moves feels like a sin of omission, playtest-wise. Ben, if you have any pointers re: easy execution of this Damned Move, they would be happily received.
But, yeah. I got it for Christmas, and only just got to start playing it earlier tonight, and my goodness I could look at / listen to / fiddle with Katamari Damacy for hours. As is often the case, I went online to read reviews of the game after I'd made my mind up about it, and wasn't surprised to see the word "joy" used in several of them. It really is just deliriously delightful; I'm taking my time and trying to be a perfectionist about things so I can drag out the experience. I am happily and constantly surprised by the things I'm finding in this game - a sink strainer? Why not?
-
No real advice on how to do the dash easily. With practice it gets easier to consistently start and maintain it, but I still haven't figured out a way to get it consistently going in the desired direction. In any case, there are only two major uses for it that I've found: crossing empty areas quickly (a street you've already cleared out, or the oceans in World scale) or using a ramp to jump. Ramp-jumping is needed for a complete collection, but you can beat every mission and unlock the three bonus stages without ramp-jumping. For collection, the "best" method I've found has been to try over and over and hope that eventually you get a dash going in the direction you actually want to be going in.

We picked this up last week and spent most of last weekend playing it. Insanely fun. Playing that and watching Simpsons season 5 all weekend gave me weird dreams, involving rolling things up on my hugely pregnant belly in a Simpsons-themed world.

Is this an import? I looked for it on amazon, and all that came back were books about brain damage. I can't go to game websites at work, because they are blocked. I could wait until I get home, but then I'd have to work, and where's the fun in that?
-
Try this (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0002Y2XXQ/qid=1104268600/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1_etk-vg/002-9766998-4507265?v=glance&s=software&n=468642).
Also: it's not an import in the "it will cost you like seventy or more dollars and a voided warranty to actually get the game running" sense. However, the game's design and sensibility, etc, were ported over completely intact, which I've read is something of a rarity.
-
I think we got our copy at BestBuy.
-
Thanks! I don't know why I couldn't find it when I searched - must have been books only and I didn't notice.
-
Incidentally, for information on the sequel, there is an official page for it (in Japanese only).
http://namco-ch.net/katamari_damacy_ps2/index.php
The new areas seem to be "Candy Stage", "School Stage", "Pond Stage", "Zoo Stage", and "Race Stage".
-
That's this one (http://www.penny-arcade.com/view.php3?date=2004-10-01&res=l), right?
Damn, I wish I had time to play video games.

That's a bad attitude, son. You've got to make the time for video games.
Now give me five good laps around the field and hit the showers.

Bumping this!
So fellow ball-rollers, what's your record? What's your biggest moon? How many crowns have you collected? How many swans?
875m!!! Woot!

Thread necromancy, hooray. Because I felt like it.
The soundtrack for the sequel, We (heart) Katamari, is out. It is not overall as good as the original soundtrack, but it has its high points: an a capella version of Katamari On The Rocks, a swing version entitled Katamari On The Swing, a kind of big cinematic orchestral piece such as one might find in a Disney movie called The Royal Academy Of Katamari, and my perplexing favorite, The King Of Kings' Song, which appears to be a gaijin singing in Japanese about how much he loves the King's Royal Rainbow.
That's all I really had to say.

I missed this thread before, so thanks for bringing it back!
This game is going to ruin my life. I can feel it coming. I just played it for the first time about a month ago, because we don't have a PS2, but a game cube (harvest moon. yay.). So we were over at a friend's place and my SO was all "Hey, they have that game you keep looking at whenever we go to the store." And then I played it. And now I want a PS2. We can't afford a god damn PS2 right now, god damn it. Why must this game be sooo good? I was actually contemplating convincing my man to get the system, even though we don't have basic things for our home like curtains for our new house, I talked myself out of it though.
And damn if I didn't get the songs stuck in my head.
-
Oh man! KATAMARI DAMASHEEEEEE! I love the visual alliteration of the kanji, too. Radness.
I have already pre-ordered the sequel game. I love that game so fuck*ng much. I got it to Eternal mode on levels 1, 3, 8, and Make the Moon.
-
We can't afford a god damn PS2 .
amen.
one thing to keep in mind about used PS/2's, a lot of people bought the new, small PS/2's, just because. and then they realized they will never put a hd in or use a hd in their ps/2, so hey they sold it. not anything wrong with it.
of course, most people prolly beat the holy hell out of it.

I am deeply intrigued, especially with the King of Kings' Song. I mean, what?
Also, what's the street date for We <3 Katamari? I will have significantly more video-game-system access next year, and I suspect this will need to be duly installed in the common room.
-
Is that, like, the Gryffindor common room?

In the sense that it is a common space in a dormitory and that it will hold a goodly quantity of nerds, yes.
