Post by: wombat on January 05, 2005, 02:10:04 pm
OK, how did it happen that the blog week starts on Wednesday?

And why isn't anyone posting about the blogs?  Go read about Molly and Phillippe and say clever things, already.

Don't most kids start with sugar cereals then work their way up to more adult stuff? Is Philippe a backwards child or was I?

I was thinking the same thing -- as far as I know, the big rite of passage was reaching a point where one could happily eat non-sugared cereals without having to dump a sugar shaker on it.* Nonetheless, I can see Teodor's point when it comes to Philippe.

* I have not yet reached this point of maturity

Cinnamon Toast Crunch almost completely a sugar cereal?  Try "totally."

I was never allowed sugar cereals when I was young, so when I first left the house and was doing my own grocery shopping I started buying them.  I never did develop a taste for them, though.  I mostly eat Rasin Bran these days.

I have never seen live gay sex.

Actually now that I think about neither have I. The raisin bran I sometimes eat has sugar. And the box of shredded wheat I keep at my desk for snacking is clearly frosted. I apparently, am sugar's bitch.

So, why doesn't Molly have a social security card?  Because she was dead?  Or is she just Canadian?

Her hair, socks, and backpack in her first appearance on earth suggest the latter.

Mmmmm, Raisin Bran with slightly under-ripe bananas and ice cold milk. Gaaaarrrgggh. </homer>

Yeah, Raisin Bran raisins are generally encrusted with sugar, and frosted mini wheats are, uh, frosted, but can foods with as much fiber as these two have really be considered junk food, even with the refined sugar?  I think not.

Sugar cereals were not allowed when I was a kid, except occasionally Honey Nut Cheerios.  I remember getting sugar cereal at friends' houses when I stayed for sleepovers and being appalled. Cap'n Crunch all shredding the roof of my mouth.  Lucky Charms I found incredibly nasty--the cereal part, which is really just frosted Cheerios is okay, but what the hell is up with those "marshmallows"?  Alpha-bits are also frosted Cheerios.

I can chow down on some Honey Graham Life, though.  The baby likes it!  Yeah, the baby.

I'm one of the few people who like regular Cap'n Krunch apparently. Well, me and the guy in Cryptonomicon.

Of course cats get SSNs. And insurance cards and whatnot. They clearly have a social services industry all their own.

Also, I just realized this marks another instance of Beef's sodium paranoia (http://www.achewood.com/index.php?date=11302004)

I fuckin' love Cap'n Crunch.  I don't get people who say it tears up the roof of one's mouth.  They must have some wimpy-ass mouths.

Also, Cap'n Crunch sent me to the junior prom.

Cap'n Crunch totally destroys my mouth every time, and I grew up on Frosted Mini-Wheats -- which may be God's chosen cereal, judging by its near-hypnotic ability to convince people it is healthy while it still visibly has hell of sugar. Maybe you are just a MUTANT, Carlos.

I grew up on Peanut Butter Crunch, but I haven't eaten any in many years.

I'm a big fan of unsweetened flake cereals like Kellog's Corn Flakes or Special K.

As for the BURNING CONTROVERSY, I find discussing the blogs in the context of one's everyday life rather more interesting than discussing them in a vacuum. Well, it's either that or my unhealthy obsession with the cereal-consuming habits of others.

What about Grape-Nuts?  Anybody else like Grape-Nuts?  Or Cracklin' Oat Bran?
Title: Blogs Jan 5 - whenever
Post by: arkabee on January 06, 2005, 05:40:11 pm
i use to love grape-nuts. then i stopped.

i use to love the almond nut cluster flake cereal that had the squirrels in the commercials.  then one sunday, i had 4 or 5 bowls, and a six pack of killian's.  then i went to the hospital.  i don't do "milk" or "killians" anymore.

peanut butter capt crunch is yummy.

there is a particular cereal that i love and eat dry or with peanut butter but i can not recal the name.  it might be "oh's".  the cereal is a ring, and it's got honey-flavor, and the middle of the circle is filled with tiny whitish spheroids.

it's delicious.

Some kind of weird alchemy that Alton Brown could probably explain seems to occur when Grape-Nuts are cooked with hot milk and they actually become sweet.

Yeah, I didn't eat sugar-cereals as a kid, except for very rare occasions of Frosted Flakes, ie on a camping trip, and as a result I find them (cereals) outstandingly weird and appalling.
I'm all about granola and oatmeal, with whatever fruit available.  I wholeheartedly agree with the notion of breakfast being the most important meal of the day.

television scares me.  not for what it shows me, but for what it shows me that i _immediately forget_.

i'm not much of a fruit guy, i like oranges and occassionally apples.  i do, however, believe i would most likely be healthier, etc, if i ate more fruit.  unless the pestocides killed me more.  anyways.

last night i was taking a break and had the teevee on and there was an ad for some new baby/toddler food stuff.  i don't remember what brand.  anyways.

it was some type of peaches, or something.  and the idea was it was healthier peaches than the other peaches, less sugar or something packaged in it, etc.  and they had several types of foods, for toddlers, that were healthier than the competitors.

and i thought "oh, that's nice.  if i ever start a family i'd sure like to feed my children healthy things so they are healthy."

today, right now, it dawned on me:

why wouldn't you go and buy a PEACH and let the kid eat a PEACH rather than spend MORE than a single PEACH costs on getting a PIECE of a peach cut up and mixed with white-bleach sugar and preservatives???

oftentimes i don't buy oranges, even though i like them, because i am _lazy_.  however, when you have kids, don't you go to the store, like, every 5 minutes, to buy diapers and more food and shoes?

and when you have kids, don't you, like, have to spend 45 minutes preparing the food and feeding them (mmmmmrrrrrrrrwwwww the airplane is going into the hangar please for the love of god open your mouth) every hour?

so, i mean, if you have kids, 1) you can't be lazy and 2) you are at the store a lot and 3) you are broke from buying tennis shoes every 4 hours and so would like to buy a peach for 65cents rather than less than a peach for $3.45??

that being said, i understand why i would want to buy prepackaged baby food because the only time i ever used a blender i broke it.

but peaches?  you use a potato peeler and a knife, right?

edit-
sorry, this is the blogs thread, not the foam at the mouth about fruit thread.

little nephew is going to end up on a reality show one of these days if he keeps on.  you mark my words.  kids these days.

also, i don't really understand cornelius' post.  did ray make him happy or sad?

Is anyone else just all kinds of creeped out by that Roast Beef post?

I mean I figured Ray would just back down at that point, swallowing a live little baby bird and all....
But he did it, and I can see the Ray-style reasoning behind doing it, but all I can think of is a baby bird slowly choking to death inside him.
The 'Death inside you' thing also makes me wonder if we are going to get some crazy korean bbq lunch black magic going on.
Probably not but it feels like it might be leading somewhere, it is Ray after all.

Now that I'm thinking about it, all the waiters and stuff knew what was in that jar, do they do this kind of shit a lot?

About Molly not having an SS card - when the hell did she die?  I don't think this is ever addressed.  She doesn't seem particularly Victorian, but if she died in the 80s or 90s, it seems like there would still be people around who would know her, so maybe she could get an SS #.  Or Ray could get one forged.

A few months ago, in the name of cultural understanding and office politics, I ate two balut.

Exhibit A:

From  Destroy All Monsters (http://www.destroy-all-monsters.com/scaryfood.shtm)

Quote from: "an insane Filipino"

Another legendary Filipino snack is called balut. Balut is basically a boiled embryonated duck egg. To make a balut, you must take the gestating duck egg and cover it with layers of hay. Pour warm water over the eggs several times a day. I think the idea is to simulate the warmth of a mama duck's ass sitting on the eggs. After 14 days, the little duck inside should be just about ready. When ready for consumption, the duck embryo should be nearly whole, with legs, bill, feathers, the whole nine yards. I have been around my relatives several times while they ate balut, and never tried it once. Drinking seems to go hand in hand with eating balut, which makes sense because you'd have to be pretty hammered to eat a half-formed boiled embryo. (To see some American dude eating a balut while a bunch of Filipinos laugh, see [Part One (http://www.destroy-all-monsters.com/balut1.ram)] and [Part Two (http://www.destroy-all-monsters.com/balut2.ram)] ).

I can't get these files to work right, but if they work for you, you can understand that I too know what it is like to have death inside of me.  And since it was during work, there was absolutely no alcohol involved.

Title: Bird Bran
Post by: Skillator on January 11, 2005, 07:03:41 pm
Roast Beef's post is absolutely awesome.
I feel very similar to Ray under those sorts of circumstances. It's not about what you're willing to eat or not. It's about how willing you are to throw up or go to the hospital or get mad screwed up.
Seriously, once you've had booze with a rattlesnake in it, a baby bird doesn't seem all that bad.
I love the Korean Barbeque. Where else can you cook your own chicken Livers while you choke down some rude, raw squid?

As for Philippe maturing to Sugary cereals, I can totally relate. There are tonnes of parents out there who will not let their kid eat any cereal with sugar as the main ingredient. It's very normal for parents not to want their kid to get diabetes at age 8 because of Sugar Bear, or that Coco Puffs Rooster, or the Leprechaun. All I ever had at home was Shreddies, Cheerios, Rice Krispies and Corn Flakes. I went throught my phases with each one of those until Highschool where I discovered the ultimate study snack: Frosted Mini Wheats. I still steer clear of the sugary stuff, occasionally delving into the sugary, Maple Nut Oatmeal Crisp. Mostly it's raisin bran and Special K for me. Philippe has entered a world of profound responsibility.

They should make a live baby bird cereal. Bird Bran!
