I might dissapear again.  It depends on whether or not Pearce is as hyperactive outside the womb as he is inside.

This is a cheap shot, but I can't help saying that this particular misspelling of 'disappear' brings to mind images of insulted fruit.  "Why you gotta diss a pear like that?"

Hey, this is an excellent forum for a name debate.  Okay everybody, it's time for your honest and thoughtful opinions, also known as "Who do you love more?"

The child's middle name is Pearson.  We will be calling him by a nickname based on this middle name.

JL believes this nickname should be spelled Pearce.  This keeps to the general spelling of the name, but contains the word 'pear' and looks more like 'peace' than anything.  (And goodness knows we all hate peace.)

Pedro believes the nickname should be spelled Pierce.  This is the spelling of an actual name.  If his nickname were Pierce, then the jumble of letters we use to indicate we're speaking of him would comprise a real name.  One that someone on this Earth has heard of.  Two fun examples are Brosnan and Hawkeye.  Now granted, it's got 'pie' in it.  And it doubles as a verb.  And there's an unsightly comic strip character of that name.  But honestly pie is better than pears, maybe he'll be a fencer, and that strip's funny every once in a while.

So it's Pearce or Pierce.  Start your tabulators.  And please, vote for me.  I'm this close to losing this one.

Pedro, I love you like a brother (because any other way would be wrong) and I normally hate funny spellings of names but... there's something that just seems right about 'Pearce' because it's closer to the spelling of the full name.

I'm sorry, man.

I have a fondness for JL that routinely breaks the 9th or 10th commandment (depending on which list you use) but I have to say that Pierce is way better than Pearce at a name.

Sorry, Jelly, but I gots to go with Perdo on this one.

The only thing I'll say is, he'd better like his first name, cause that's what he'll get called a whole bunch.

The fact that the kid's name in Zits is Pierce is the funniest thing I find in the newspaper comics these days. The "irony" always makes me laugh.

I'm a bit torn here, because if I'm going by the argument, Pearce wins 100% of the Golfhaus vote. If I go by liking the name, though, Pierce gets it all the way.

I also agree with slink - I'm sure you've explained why he's not going to be called by his first name, but I've been drinking (coke and vanilla rum) and can't be bothered to go look for it. But my stepdad's kid ran into that problem - he was called by his middle name (Justin), and ran into issues when teachers refused to call him by anything but his first name (William). When he was real little, he was even counted as absent for kindergarten a few times when the teacher would call his name and he wouldn't respond to William because he'd never been called that before.

When I saw "Pearce" I immediately thought "Dammit, they're misspelling his name - and I like these people, too." You of course realize that it doesn't make a damn bit of difference what you call your kid. He's going to get ridiculed no matter what. My personal vote would be to nickname him "Peaches".

I'm doing a write-in campaign for "Peaches Valentine."

Otherwise, Pierce.

I would be inclined to go with "Pierce," because I have a slight bias towards names that are spelled in a conventional fashion, but I agree with everyone else that it matters very little given that the kid's nickname will probably never actually be written out.

I'm a bit confused by the idea of elementary-school teachers harshing on a kid for a nickname; this may be because, back in that particular dreamtime, I had a frequent classmate named Louis who went by "Malen," always, and the teachers never gave him a hard time about it at all. (I assume it had to have been his middle name; otherwise, how the hell do you get Malen from Louis?) That said, your elementary schools may vary.

Hell. As someone who had to put up with it until a year ago, I meant things like Banks and shit as much as anything. I got so annoyed that bank and credit cards all came as my first name used in first and surname context.

And OK, I'd say Pierce. I just prefer it that way is all though. Go with it one way and then let him decide himself when he can.

Also, I had a nutjob psycho boss once whose name was Pearce.

I had a friend named John who suddenly in High School decided he wanted to be called Cullen.  I don't think it was part of or derived from or related to his birth name.  It's just what he wanted to be called.

Eventually, Pearson will throw off the shackles of the Man, like Slink and I did, rejecting all the names laid on him entirely.

Yeah, but keep in mind by "elementary school" I mean early elementary school on. While I suppose it could be that a first-grader could just decide to be called Malen instead of his given name, it's not the most likely possibility.

That said, I've heard of a few people who've done it ala John^WCullen. A friend of mine's father now goes exclusively by the nickname he picked up in eleventh-grade algebra, one totally unrelated to his real name; it makes it easy to screen out telemarketers, since none of his friends or co-workers call him by his legal name.

Depends on if the nickname is ever going to be read and mis-pronounced from that reading in public.  If not, then the spelling doesn't really matter.  If so, I can issue an iron bound guarantee that Pearce is going to get completely mangled, be really annoying and result in several horrifically scarring nicknames that the boy will hold onto and resent y'all for unto eternity.

Just imagine an elementary and middle school life filled with catcalls of "Pearrr-saaay, Pear butt P-P-P-Peeaarrr-saaaay!" after a roll call foul up and you'll get what I mean.

See, I would have thought "Pierce" would be more subject to that, having its own meaning.  You do not want to give a kid a name that is made out of words, trust me.

I guess he could always change the spelling of his name later to make it suit him better.

I've um, heard that people do that.

Given that this is, in fact, a nickname, which doesn't require a trip to the courthouse to change, I'm not too stressed about it.  If the boy's father and I choose to spell it different ways, it will probably confuse people, but c'est la vie.  I figure he's likely to switch over to his first name (which is also Pedro's Real Name, hence the middle-name appelation) eventually, because it's a beautiful, beautiful name, but I'm really trying my best to avoid having people call him "Junior."

We are, however, encouraging friends and family to bypass the given names altogether and stick with nicknames like "Hawkeye," "Deuce," and "The Sequel."  "Version 2.0" is also acceptable.

Mostly, I like "Pearce" over "Pierce" because it's internally consistent.  That, and if you get halfway through writing the nickname and realize you're supposed to be writing his full name, like on a medical form or something, you can finish it out as his complete middle name and cram his first name in front of it without crossing anything out.  And also I don't want to encourage him to put holes in his body when he reaches the age of fifteen and decides he needs to rebel by dyeing his hair pink and wearing his underwear on the outside, or whatever the style happens to be in 2020.

All things considered, I think it's high time this thread were split and a poll added.

Good idea, the only time that's any good is when you ain't a Junior.  Then it's way cool.

I've only known 3 juniors and 2 of them went by JR (that is, Jay Ar). Which isn't much of an improvement.

I know one JR who doesn't need an ass-whupping, but that's because those are his initials and not, you know, short for "Junior."

Also, could someone here please please please explain "Trey" to me? I understand that it's a variation on "junior" for those who are in fact Something the Third, but... I don't know, it rubs me wrong.

That said, my vote is still for Pierce. Sorry, Jamie.

On preview: "Trey" is sort of a spin off of triple or, I guess, the Spanish "tres". I think card players call threes "treys", too. Treys are, in my experience, far worse than JRs.

Yeah, I get the etymology, I just... don't get the need for a specific "I am the third of my name" nickname. Is the idea that, by the third, you've already worn through both the legitimate first name and the appropriate nickname? (i.e., say, Thomas the First is "Thomas," his son is "Tom" or "Tommy," and then that son's son has to be "Trey" because any other alternative is just too odious?)

I guess it just weirds me out because I've known a couple of Treys with very nice first names whom I felt actually deserved the dignity of that first name instead of something that gets cafeteria jokes constantly.

The only III I knew went by Chip which is debatable badness-wise compared to Trey. His real name was Gerard which is just out of the question.

From the instant I saw the question, I had to go with Pierce. Just for the Hawkeye connotations, really. I'm pretty sure I've had a crush on that character since the womb.

Bill Gates went by Trey in his younger years.

My dad was a third.  His mom called him "Jack Three" which sounds less ridiculous than it looks written out.  He was called that because his dad went by Jack, and neither of them were willing to switch to their first name "Claude".  As much as dad hated Claude, he wanted to pass his name along (like his father and grandfather).  Thus my eldest brother is Christopher Jackson.

Clifford Pearson is my father's mother's father's name.  Grandma was the tomboy of her family, and because her dad wanted a son and had all girls, she got to fill that role.  When she grew up, she really wanted to pass her daddy's name along like she could do if she were born with a wang.  So  my uncle was named Cliff after her dad.

I'm the third of five kids.  Chris got 'Jackson' from my dad, Danny got 'Sigfried' from mom's dad, and I got 'Pearson' from dad's mom's dad.  You still with me?  Who's that sleeping in the back?

Anyway, the point is that family names play a big role in my family.  JL and I hope to have tons of younguns.  We hope that they have traits reflective of our best traits and the best traits of those family members who came before us.  In that spirit, we want to name our kids with family names.  It's a symbollic way to acknowledge the achievements and mistakes of those who came before us.

My name is Adrian Pearson Dunston.  It's really served me well.  Sure kids called me gay-drian, or did Rocky impressions, but no one ever called out my name when they were trying to get someone else's attention.  Few people forgot my name after hearing it a couple of times.  I hope that it will serve my son as well as it did me.  I'm not hoping he grows up to be me, or that he grows up to achieve everything I couldn't.  I just want to give him everything I can.  That'll start with the name.  He can have it now.  He'll be Pierce the newer more authentic Adrian Pearson, with all new strengths and all new challenges.  I'll be Pedro, the dodgy old rough draft Adrian.

And together with JL, the little mama, and a cadre of other Dunstons mini, we'll form a whole more powerful even than Devastator.

My husband is a III.  He's called Bill and his dad is called Bill.  I find that annoying as hell.

I'm with JL, it's a nickname, so the spelling should reflect a similarity to the name from which it is derived.  If it were me, I'd probably spell it Pearse.

Even though we had intended to wait until after she was born, we seem to have chosen a name for our baby: Lydia Violet.

apropos of nothing, i must say that i keep parsing "Pearson" as "person", and that if i as hanging with your son, i would probably call him chuck.

i vote "pearce" because it's a shortened form of his name.

I think Violet was the least hillbilly of the names on that list, so I'm happy to see that that you've gone with the least offensive names to call your offspring, but is she going to be called by both names or will she eventually just be "lid" - THAT is the question.

Breaking news, y'all.  Sorry to re-open a dead thread, but I didn't want to hijack Va's thread, and this is a small enough piece of news that I don't think it merits a thread of its own.

I'm due four weeks from today, as those of you who have been counting might know.  As you also might or might not know, I've had all kinds of freakish complications with this pregnancy, including but not limited to: thyroid disorder, gallstones, and gestational diabetes.  For this reason, my doctor informed me this morning that not only will he not let me go past my due date, but that he will induce labor as early as he feels is absolutely safe for me and Pearce/Pierce.  Which means, if I don't go into labor by February 21st, I'll check in to the hospital for an induction.

This is great news in that it means that we just had a week cut off of our waiting period, and that there is definitely a clear end in sight for what has been a rather difficult pregnancy.  However, I'm still hoping to go into labor naturally (on account if it being generally better for the baby and easier on the Mama), so say a prayer/keep your fingers crossed that the induction turns out to be a moot point.

Also, if you're the praying type, please say a few words for my cousin.  She's a single mom who lost her mother to cancer two years ago, and is going to have to decide this week whether or not to remove her father from life support following a very sudden heart attack/stroke combination yesterday morning.  Sorry this is all wrapped up in baby stuff, but I only have time for a couple of posts today and I had a lot of "sharing" to do.

Thanks.

PS. Anybody know when Chris' baby is due?

Where have you been young lady??!!  Laid up in bed with nothing to do but game and surf the web and we see you once a month???  That is Simply. Not.  Acceptable.  We will all be expecting this problem to be rectified immediately.  If not sooner.

I hope all goes well for you.  We were roped into induction for circumstances far less dramatic than yours (on the basis of swollen ankles, which are not at all common during pregnancy, and one high blood pressure reading which wasn't duplicated on immediate re-tests, the doctor said Mrs. del Vaca might have pre-eclampsia and should think about inducing.  Then he moved it up another week based on the hospital's schedule).  If I'd have had it to do again, I'd have fought it.  But in your case it sounds much more warranted.

Here's the type of adorable kid story you have to look forward to:  my daughter (20 months) speaks, as you might imagine, a unique flavor of English.  My favorite Lizzie-word at the moment, is "hoadie."  That's her word for "hoss."  Furthermore, several other four-legged hoofed mammals, such as zebras or giraffes, are identified as "hoadie," or occasionally "hoadie hoadie hoadie."  (Not cows, which are "Moo!")  So are monkeys, for reasons I am unable to fathom.

Cracks me up. Now I find myself saying it all the time.  Hoadie hoadie hoadie.

This is totally reasonable to me. A zebra is basically a hoss except a little bit different, so if a hoss is "hoadie" then a zebra also being "hoadie" makes sense. In this system, a giraffe is clearly a hoadie with two more hoadies on top.

Too soon? Naw, once you hit 38 weeks or so you're on the baby's schedule.

Everything is perfect; we are inducing a little early so as to avoid the baby growing to a size that would require a c-section. There have been no complications nor fear of complications, and we don't anticipate any issues tomorrow aside from the small chance that a son will come out in place of our daughter. Which would be OK except the name is kind of up in the air. There is heavy lobbying from the five year old to have a boy and name him Jack.

We eschew drama in the reproductive realm! Cross your fingers anyhow.

Elinor has gained a scant 5 lbs during this pregnancy; her Dr. is very happy - weight, blood pressure, sugar and everything stayed nominal throughout. It's those sturdy Eastern European babymakin' genes of hers. She worked until last Friday and has been swimming 600 yards twice a week throughout. It's been a copacetic ride with, hopefully, an exciting and perfect finish tomorrow.

I'll post pics ASAP; induction process begins at 6 am.

Indeed.  I find this all too stressful and wish you'd all just buy puppies instead.

Um, speaking of which, I have 8 puppies available.  They're three weeks old and very cute (of course).  Anybody want one?

Elinor has gained a scant 5 lbs during this pregnancy; her Dr. is very happy - weight, blood pressure, sugar and everything stayed nominal throughout. It's those sturdy Eastern European babymakin' genes of hers.

Oh, not fair, not fair.  I think I gained all the weight Elinor is "missing" -- nearly 50 lbs all told!  (Although my Doc tells me it's a side effect of the gestational diabetes, is within normal limits for my body type and it will go away as my insulin levels return to normal.)  My sturdy Eastern European genes don't seem to have helped.  Maybe it's the English/Irish half that's causing all the trouble.

It usually is, anyway.

OK, I guess it's about time for an update.

First and foremost, Doc has decided that my particular combination of complications warrant an induction if I haven't delivered by the 21st.  This is a week in advance of my due date, which is fine by me.  So we'll be going to the hospital at 5:30 AM next Monday, if not before.  I've shown a few signs of preparedness about which I'm sure you'd rather not hear the details, but I seem to be seriously lacking in the contractions department (very few false labor contractions, even).  So I don't expect at this point to deliver naturally.  Somewhat disappointing, but my brother and I were both induced and at least one of us appears to have turned out OK.

Second, in spite of the results of the poll that appeared above, Pedro and I have agreed to spell our son's nickname "Pearce."  It's good to see that, in these troubled times, for once, at least, clearer heads have indeed prevailed.

Photos will, of course, be posted as soon as they are available.  We have a digital camera and high-speed internet access from the hospital, so expect something by Monday evening.  In the meantime, Pedro and I can hardly stand the anticipation.  I hope all the other new babes are doing well, and I hope the new parents are keeping up on their sleep rather than being so silly as to post here.  I, personally, am caught up in last-minute preparations and probably won't be around again (except, perhaps, to lurk briefly) until after the boy makes his appearance.

See you kids on the flip side.

Awesome.   Good luck in popping out Jr.  And I'm sorry to hear that you're going to be misspelling his name from birth.  But he can always change it later once he reaches the age of reason.

So "cooler heads" meaning that you've beaten Pedro down to the point where he will cave and let you misname his son?

May all go well and smoothly, JL. (And heck, it's not like spelling matters that much -- just a nickname, after all.)

I find this hilarious, given that my mother is a Pisces and has always been the voice of calm and reason on the family. (Then again, what do I know? As a friend once told me, I don't believe in astrology because I'm a Virgo.)

As far as I know they were supposed to induce labour yesterday.  So maybe they're not online yet.

Good luck to everybody, and best wishes and all that!

Which would be OK except the name is kind of up in the air. There is heavy lobbying from the five year old to have a boy and name him Jack.

Rock on! That's my new name!
