Now I know that it may be the case this kid is lying about it being a zombie story, I'd like more evidence before taking sides straight off, but from what that cop says...

That's pretty frightening and appalling.  Hopefully there is more to it, but damn.

I read this link on Fark yesterday, and in the discussion somebody linked to more of the story at another source which I am too lazy to CJ at this point.  My initial reaction was much the same as yours, however, this later story said the guys "zombie story" had lots of details like individual teacher names and very specific plans for taking over the school and committing mayhem therein.  So there could be some justification for the charges.

That's something at least. I thought, from the info I got there that it may not have been all there was to it.
But still, this bit makes me cringe: " possess matter involving a school or function". That's a bit loose isn't it? If you get a yearly report from the school, or a map of the grounds, you can be arrested for suspected terrorism. Well... yeah. They're trying to pull this kind of shit over here at the moment. Apparently there are up to 200 members of Al Quaeda in the UK waiting to commit terrorist acts, which isn't bad for a non existent organisation!

We have a bit of evidence on this site of the pond that the group exists.  They've been known to hijaak an airplane or two; an action for which existence is a requisite.

It's a loose affiliation of people who went to Bin Laden for funding and advice, he's noones leader. It all got blown out of proportion. The CIA themselves said - 'The stuff about a global terror network? We made it up because we were asked to!'
Sorry but that's enough for me.
I'm not saying that terrorism isn't something to be concerned about, but it has been used to create fear to keep a nation under control. It's what the neo-cons do. That and religion.

I saw an interesting comment on something the other night. The Statue of Liberty - supposed to represent freedom and liberty - is closed. It just shouldn't be. OK, heightened security maybe, but they shouldn't just back away from freedom. It's just giving in and letting terrorists win.

Um, actually that proves that hijackers exist, not that a global conspiracy does.

mmmmmmmm. eh. i dunno.

liberty versus security, innit?

i certainly don't want someone to plot out going to a school and shooting people, etc.  i wouldn't want it while i was in school, i wouldn't want it while my children (hypothetical children at this point) were in shcool, nor when anyone else's children were in school.  and not just schools, but anywhere.

however, do we want to enact legislation against thought crimes?  do we want to say "it's not ok to put ideas down on paper"?

it's such a slippery slope.

was watching c-span one day a month or so ago, during the senate debates inre: the omnibus money bill that had to be passed or "oh shit".  one of the senators ( i think it was W VA's byrd) was like "wtf? has anyone read this?  i haven't.  one of the interns read some of it, and, like, what's the deal with the part where the committee members can look into anyone's tax records, etc".  obviously that's a horrible paraphrase on my part.

anyways, the committee chair got all outraged "are you saying i put that in there?  are you saying i'm going to look at anyone's private records!!?? i promise i won't!" yada, yada.  dude was flustered, but as much as i would trust an old republican senator, i figured he was being honest.  he wasn't trying to push in some legislation to take advantage of.

but, the other guy, he was like "dude, aren't you stepping down as chair this next term? what about the next guy? are you promising _he_ won't use the legislation to do what it says?"

and that's what scares the shit out of me about stuff like that KY law.

i don't want bad people to do bad stuff, and you don't want bad people to do bad stuff.

but, you write a law, you oughta enforce that law, and you oughta expect that law to _be_ enforced.  so, you write a law that says "it's a felony to write about school" and you meant "we want to stop kids from shooting other kids in school like columbine etc", then you have a problem.  cuz, it's the law enforcements job to _enforce_ the laws that are written, not interpret them.

i dunno.

Please, don't force me to be on the side of the wing nuts.  Bin Laden is real, Al-Quida is real.  Just because the neocons are telling us lies doesn't mean that terrorist networks are a fantasy.

I wasn't saying that they don't exist, because I personally have no way of knowing, I was just pointing out the logical fallacy.

It's true.  The attacks on 9/11 themselves are not evidence of anything but that they happened.  Evidence is the shit you need to link those attacks to an organization.

I do think that in all the talk of Al Quaeda post the attacks, it has made it a more cohesive network, but I think the media and government caliming it's the case its what's made it be. Bin Laden only referred to Al Quaeda after the media did.
