Because there aren't enough people on this board popping out babies, my wife and I are having another one. A girl, due August 6.
Of COURSE it's a girl. We had a boy's name picked out, but we can't decide on a girl's name. Mrs. del Vaca named the first one, so I think I should get to name the second one, but she vetoes everything I throw out there.
It's extremely weird to look at our almost-two-year-old and say, "You're our oldest."
-
Congrats!
For names, you need to start by suggesting some really, really bad names to get the ball rolling: Eunice, Tanzania, etc, then slip only one reasonable one that you like into the list, and it sounds oh so much better. True story - if I was a boy, my name was going to be Nathan. My mom told me that just a little while ago. And I was definitly, definitly supposed to be a boy. This was made very clear to me early on in life.

My mom was the 3rd girl and was supposed to be a boy. They just feminized her name from Anthony Donald.
But I agree that you should start with crap names. Trinity. Candy. Cyndi. Actually, just peruse jadedvideo and write down any name you see. Those should all get vetoed.

Congrats!

Good going, Carlos!

Hey, congrats!
As far as names, I would like to name my first daughter "Helvetica" but there are other acceptible pretty names for girls, like "Ariel," "Verdana," and "Lucida."
-
Congrats, man!
I want my firstborn to have the middle name "Strange." Because then, if they ever get super powers, they can just drop the last name and have their kickass superhero name.
-
Heartiest of congrats and that.
I'd come up with some names, but well, from someone called Slink it's probably going to be shot down straight off. That said, I always considered calling a kid Serena. But I'm not so sure anymore. Plus I am so far from the thought of actually having kids...

Or if they ever get a Ph.D. (or M.D., D.D., J.D. or whatever), they can be Dr. Strange!

I like the idea of naming a baby Ariel, with everyone thinking it's some normal name but that's not what you meant by it.
Now I have a strange urge to get another cat and name it Times New Roman.

If I got a dog I'd name it "Cooper".

I resisted the temptation to make that joke. From a man's perspective, I doubt it's a good idea to get into a 3 way with God. You're not gonna fare very well by comparison.

Yeah, man, God has the biggest cock of all.
Anyway, saving yourself for marriage was a population control concept. That, and before we had SCIENCE people believed that you only had so many orgasms and then that was it - so you had to "save them" for marriage.
Now we know that is bullshit and while it is true that a woman only has so many eggs with which to create more humans they're going to be fertile for a couple days a month no matter what.
So you may as well get your groove on. Not every two people are compatible sexually and it's better to find out before you're married that the only way your wife can get off is to have a Mexican juggling team fuck her in every hole she's got.
-

Oh, I was only kidding. We've already taken each other for several test drives, and appear to be very compatible. What I meant to say is that she is already talking about whether she'd like to have a boy or girl first. Not that you get to choose...but apparently it's fun to talk about.
-
the only way your wife can get off is to have a Mexican juggling team fuck her in every hole she's got.
That's just sick! You disgusting bastard.
Unless the jugglers are wearing luchador masks. Then it's cool.
-
...it's better to find out before you're married that the only way your wife can get off is to have a Mexican juggling team fuck her in every hole she's got.
My god.....the luchadors....they're made of stars!
-
Bozack, remember that horrible movie with the amateur wrestlers and the UHaul full of zombies you made me watch? I know, i know, it's awesome on paper, but not when porn stars are playing superhero. Anyways, luchadors, yeah. I'd rather get with a zombie.
-
Zombie porn?
Bozack, you've been holding out on us.
-
Jesus, that movie sucked SO BAD. They weren't REAL luchadors, they were a bunch of asshole college students pretending to be luchadors. And there were all of these girls who were obviously supposed to be the sex interests, but they.....erghh. Were not.
I know it sounds like it would be hard to make a boring movie about luchadors, zombies, and scantily clad college students, but believe me, America is the home of innovation. We did it.
-
Congratulations, Carlos! Hurray!

In defense of chastity, saving yourself for marriage is a helpful and useful concept even today! Sexual intercourse is often treated lightly and has been for pretty much ever, but it is a big deal. The emotional, psychological, and spiritual bonds it fosters are incredibly painful when broken. That's why we have social constructs that aren't supposed to be broken at all.
As for casual sex, it may not lead to long term bonding, but over time it seems spiritually harmful. Or psychologically if you prefer. Kind of deadening.
I've been unable to do personal research in this area, but these are my conclusions based on observation. Lifelong marriage is the proper context for sex. Outside of that, it just seems to mess things up.
JL and I were virgins on our wedding night, and it's really worked out for us. Besides, if you're going to marry somebody and you're worried about what sex with them will be like, maybe you should reevaluate how much you know about the person and the level of attraction involved.
This message brought to you by the preachy prudes at Keep-It-In-Your-#####.org
-
Can't agree with that. But my hoss got out of the barn a long, long time ago. A lot of times.
Sex does not lead to psychological problems all by itself. I'd say more married people go nuts from marriage then sexually active people go nuts from fuckin'. The pathology comes first, then the acting out behaviors follow. Usually. It's about how you handle yourself and your situation.
If a person has a problem with a substance or behavior, they should be pointed toward help. If a person can handle a (legal or acceptable) substance or behavior, then they should be allowed to do it. It's that easy.
If you're religious beliefs call for chastity to marriage, that is something else. That's between people and God.
In terms of the 'secular' efforts toward abstention as a means of preventing pregnancy and STDs, studies seem to indicate that very often virginity contracts lead to experimentation in more risky forms of sex in order to avoid standard genito-penetrative sex. So what's worse?

Our abstinance until marriage society has bred a generation of blowjob queens. It's a great time to be a teenager.

I saw that story in the Post. Teens who sign the "virginity pacts" are more likely to do oral and anal. At work we busted a gut when we read that. Oral I can kind of see, but anal? That's just funny.
-
What's more funny is the first-timers who do the anal part first, and then the blowjob for a big finish.
MMMM-mmm!
-
According to my cousin who is recently back from Afghanistan, Muslim men in that country are all about some anal for similar reasons. All beards and back doors, those fighters.

My first husband was a virgin when we got together, and while it was really sweet getting to be someone's first, I was always worried by the fact that he had only ever had sex with me. How could he not be curious about having sex with other people? Hell, if he had cheated on me, I might have given him a pass on it. Okay, no, there's no way I would give him a pass, but I would have understood.
-
I guess the real point is that everyone is different. I've met people who are really, truly monogamous and I've met people who have absolutely zero ability to be monogamous. And then people change over time, too....like when they have kids, for example.
More important, I think, than the individual's behavior is the relationship - you adjust yourself and/or the relationship if you both want to be in it. So horndog freaks wind up calming down, or strict puritan types become less so in accepting their partners foibles, or they both become swingers, or whatever...but either people are alone or together, and if together, than adjustments happen or they wind up alone again. What you value is a big factor that drives behavior.
-
...while it was really sweet getting to be someone's first, I was always worried by the fact that he had only ever had sex with me. How could he not be curious about having sex with other people?...
I have the same sort of weirdness about my current girlfriend. I mean, I'm the ONLY ONE! If she says that sex was good, I can't help but wonder what she's comparing it to. But, of course, it's a lot less frightening when you're just dating.

My current ladyfriend is my first, but we've been dating on and off for quite some time, so she's not my only. And I wasn't totally inexperienced before her, just officially inexperienced. She said it was weird for her, and she was really a bit reluctant to steal my innocence, but she couldn't resist, of course. Now, she speaks of it like it was some kind of accomplishment.
Actually, I had to beg.

I find it curious that a thread about my second-born turned into a discussion of the merits of waiting until marriage.
Not that I'm complainin', just pointing out. Carry on.

Jonathan Davis, of Korn, and his wife, porn actress Deven, named their newborn son Pirate. This is not a joke.

Seconded. Unlike your baby, Va, which makes me try to tickle my monitor every time I see your avatar. Oh, and your baby is perfect too, JL/Pedro. And Carlos, yours will be beautiful too. And everybody else who's spawned lately, delayed congratulations. Including Phillip from Goats, who does not read these boards.

Recently bought the book On Becoming Baby Wise after three recommendations from parents I know. I still haven't finished reading it. Funny what kids will do to the amount of time you can spend reading about kids. Noticed a few things kind of off. One of the authors is Gary Ezzo, M.A. But it doesn't ever say what arts he is the master of. Early in the book, it basically says that two parent households are essential for child development. And then throws a lame "but single parents are doing the best they can."
I liked the promises of regularity and kids that sleep when they're sleepy and only cry when something's wrong. Also some of the statistics presented in the book (though they weren't backed up with names of journals or anything) were very reassuring. JL now points out that the thing is written by a pastor and is widely dismissed by pediatricians as being worthless or dangerous.
I am a fool. No matter how much I think on how a person can't trust the trusted sources around him, I'm still taken in by stuff like this. I don't want easy answers, but I at least want to know that when my child can't fall asleep without us holding onto him, that's perfectly normal and not going to screw anybody up more than is necessary.
Also, easy answers would be nice.

Our favoritest baby-wrangling advice book was Secrets of the Baby Whisperer (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0345440900/qid=1115842290/sr=8-1/ref=pd_csp_1/103-5798183-1242247?v=glance&s=books&n=507846). Despite the British author obnoxiously trying to write British ("Your baby is fine, luv!"), it had good stuff. She runs down the variations on baby cries and what they often mean (if baby is hungry, it'll sound such as this...), and behold they were largely right.
-
The more parenting I do, the more I realize that:
Nearly ALL the books are full of crap.
Also MOST other people are 1/2 full of crap.
If you are a normal, well adjusted person you will do fine for the most part following your instincts. Our race has survived for millions of years without trying to follow 100 disparate opinions about child rearing. Listen to yourself, we are hardwired to perpetuate our species.
In general, babies tell you what they need and want. Spend time with your child and you'll catch on quick. But that's the key - spending time concentrating on your child.
I agree that a two parent, opposite sex household is the ideal situation as long as they are in a functional relationship and sharing responsibility. That's not to say single parents or gay couples are bad parents but I believe that both gender viewpoints are important and that children model relationships after the one they see the most growing up.
-

I whole-heartedly agree. This shit ain't rocket science, it's nurturing DAMMIT !
Somehow gibbons, ocelots and chickens are able to sucessfully able to raise their offspring without a glib handbook. If you have normal human instincts you'll be able to too.
The unfortunate thing is that so many humans with abnormal instincts have babies. Thankfully nobody here falls into that category.
-
The unfortunate thing is that so many humans with abnormal instincts have babies. Thankfully nobody here falls into that category.
Uh, we wrote 16460 messages about a comic strip. I'd hardly call that a normal instinct.
-
Our race has survived for millions of years without trying to follow 100 disparate opinions about child rearing.
Thanks for the reassurance. I think the main reason I feel the need for books is that I'm not living with an extended family where I'm constantly innundated with the wisdom of the ages. I trouble with my instincts because my instincts generally involve eating tons of ice cream. Still I love this kid so much, and I'm starting to get confident that I can provide what he needs.
I agree that a two parent, opposite sex household is the ideal situation as long as they are in a functional relationship and sharing responsibility.
I also think it's the ideal situation, but I wouldn't want a book ostensibly about child psychology to preach that to me because it is actually based on theology. Also, he's a bit heavy handed about it.
-
Also, he's a bit heavy handed about it.
like reading a pamphlet on how to treat snake bites, wherein every other sentence it says "the best way would have been not to have been bitten by a snake. you should not chase snakes with rakes. leave the snake alone, dude."
like, thanks man, but that doesn't help me with my asp problem right now.

Boo to that... I foresee an entire life of being asked for their name and them being asked, "Excuse me, what was that?" Then being asked to spell it. Then told what a unique name it is. Then being asked where it's from. Then being asked, "Your parents are a little weird, aren't they?"
