I've been enjoying this song by The Weakerthans quite a bit, and it occured to me that it's very much an Achewood tune.

This song frequently gets stuck in my head for no discernable reason. See also: Fett's Vette.

Wait, sorry for the belated reply, but I somehow missed this post before...
So, Cort, you've actually heard this song before? I totally thought the Weakerthans hadn't been heard by anybody outside Winnipeg. Huh.

It's getting stuck in my head now on a depressingly regular basis. Thanks, side_show. I think you may have finally replaced the headsong void left by my never re-downloading any Harry and the Potters MP3s.

My coworker is a big fan of theirs. Ergo, I now listen to them.

I was first exposed to them by the column Dancing About Architecture (http://www.411mania.com/music/columns/article.php?columns_id=3787) back when he was discussing the 2004 Shortlist Prize and I DL'd Reconstruction Site from eMusic. It's a really great album, especially Retired Explorer and A New Name for Everything. The SO is a fan of Benediction since she was already a Beth Orton mark.
And Ian Wright is Irish, so it's definitely not just Winnipegians who've heard of them.
I also have Left & Leaving but don't like it as much. How are their other albums?

It's a small web-world after all, huh. I suppose 'cause they're the sort of band that's been slugging it out in the local bar scene for so long, I just imagined they were localized in a perminant sort of way, but looking at their CD a little closer I see they're on the Epitaph label... weird. Anyways I listened to the song and the CD a couple of times yesterday, which suited the grey rainy day we had.

Yeah, I've been hearing about them a lot lately. I saw them opening for another band a long time ago, and I used to be moderately into Propagandhi, which the singer used to be in/maybe still is or something, but never got so much into the Weakerthans. It's still neat that they are making it big though.

I didn't know there was any Propagandhi connection, but you're likely right, the music scene here is like the theatre scene - totally incest-y.
Propagandhi is perminantly tied in my mind to a sense of self-satisfied self-rightousness. Being that they were lefties like myself I though I might like their music, but before I ever heard anything by them my path in life crossed with different band memebers several times, and I found their actual behaviour in public to be just totally repugnant. All hanging out at the vegan restaurant, using tahani instead of butter and making a point to be sure that everyone was aware of it. Jeeze, just let me half-enjoy my half-decent carobe brownie in peace.
Also, I went to university with a girl who dated a guy in Propagandhi, and she was so snide, so very snide. I remember her glimpsing a book I was reading, Douglas Coupland's "Girlfriend in a Coma," and just totally rolling her eyes. I suddenly felt about a foot tall and like I was reading a Danielle Steel novel. I'd run into the two of them on campus all the time and they'd just sneer at me. I was totally puzzled by their dislike of me.
