I always wondered where (in the early days at least) even seemingly nice guys like Teodor and Mr. Bear would get the idea to abuse poor little Philippe.
No more wondering!
Comparing possibly-the-cutest-ever Philippe of panel 1 with the abject horror of panel 12 and the completely broken heart of panel 13 produces great enjoyment.
-
I do not like cruelness to Phillipe!
I thought the world being cruel was an illusion but it seems that it is true.
My goodness!
-
I don't have any children, but occurs to me that Chris' daughter may have a farting problem. I didn't fart that much yesterday, and I had lunch at a place called "Tortilla Flats" :) Maybe they're lacing her formula with hot sauce and refried beans.
-
Onstad! You prick!
-
Seriously! Onstad is giving Pat a run for his money.
-
It's like the Christmas punch, only with deeper and longer lasting scars!
I'm worried though: is Achewood going to become a strip that is constantly about a baby?
-
Waitaminute! That's not Onstad, it's Liebot in disguise again!
-
If you want the baby to fart more, give her elephant garlic. That stuff is sulfur central.
Also, Phillipe is retarded and it is fun to make fun of retards, especially if they are not aware we are making fun of them. Bozack/Beatrice, for example.
-
That was freaking hilarious. Way to stick it to the otter. The self satisfaction begged to be crushed and the underlying insecurity provided the perfect weapon. It's as if Onstad knew him right down to his fluffy little core.
Screwing with little kids' minds is not cool. Fortunately, we're dealing with a cartoon otter. That makes it cooler than John Travolta's corpse three quarters buried head-first in Antarctica with penguins stripping the flesh off his calves.
Philippe is at his best when his innocence itself breeds ultra-crassness (a la hot bloody fat spewing all over the mayor). He's at his second best when someone makes him cry.
I don't care for John Travolta.
-
I get the feeling that Chris & Co. find Phillipe especially cute when he is crying. Hence the endless cruelty.
Pricks.
-
Don't be mean to Philippe!
It's fine when Liebot does it, but man, you should be ashamed...
-
Also, Phillipe is retarded and it is fun to make fun of retards, especially if they are not aware we are making fun of them. Bozack/Beatrice, for example.
I would rather be a Phillippe than a Molly, because the otter is cute-retarded but the cat is girl-retarded.
But this does basically sum up my baby/pet sitting skills. I'm living at home for a week to take care of an old fart mutt dog and an insane beagle. God she is crazy and <3s to pee. It is only Wednesday and I have pretty much given up.
Also, what kind of shoes are those?
And, has Onstad ever met Molly? Or does he just hear stories?
Edit: And oh my does Phillippe have such nice cursive for a thing that is both young and an otter!
-
They let a five-year-old Otter watch their two-week-old baby?
Awesome.
-

One imagines that the Onstads let Phillipe babysit the kiddo while they took their far-flung, 15-minute vacation to the backyard or something. Or given the times in the chart, maybe dinner.
I wonder what Mrs. Onstad has to say about Chris messing with the minds of her stuffed animals.
-
Ha, jesus, that is fuck*ng awful! I love it!
-
I'm worried though: is Achewood going to become a strip that is constantly about a baby?
If the strips continue to be this funny who cares. So far his 2 post baby 'baby strips' have been the funniest of the lot.

-
This makes me want to cry. Why do I read a comic strip that makes me want to cry?

I was making a lame-ass alt text callback (http://www.achewood.com/index.php?date=03222005).

I know I just wanted to add that the strips about a baby have been very funny in my humble regard.

It's been moving this way for some time, but I think today I can officially announce the TOUAMB is primary and the comic strip is secondary. Yay Us!
Boo to Onstad for making a fictional five year old alive stuffed sentient animal cry! Yay Onstad for making funny-ass cartoons 98% of the time!
I wonder how those of us with kids react differently to this strip to those of us without?

Those of you with kids must have been much more aware that babies fart. It had kind of never occurred to me.

Now that I think about it I remember hearing from countless sitcoms that babies don't smile, they just have gas. But it hadn't really occurred to me that they were actually getting their fart on.
-
The new little one has been smiling a lot for about a week now, and since we can make her respond with a smile, I'm pretty sure it's not gas. She's coming along nicely.
-
It's funny. I don't have any baby cousin or anything, but there's always one close by. If you don't have one yourself or aren't related to one, there's still a baby lurking. I had to think about it but my next door neighbors just had a baby and I got to meet her for the first time the other night. I don't usually live there ao I haven't been around, but dad brought her out around ten p.m. and showed her off. Quite the smiler, not much gas.
Point: 7 degrees of seperation between you and everybody, one or two from a baby. Baaaaaaaaaabiiiieeeeeeeees!
-
A family with twins just moved in next door. There is at least one baby crying within my hearing range at all times now.
-
Here's the baby i've had the most contact with lately. His name is Jayden.
So babies have gas, huh, that's interesting. I always thought they just smelled because they constantly shit themselves.
~Paul
-
Maybe they just smile because they get to constantly shit themselves.
-
I know that's why I smile.
-
Did the woman holding Jayden request the black strip, Paul?
Babies, I think, can do just about all the gross bodily function stuff adults do: barf, shit, urinate, fart and even burp I think.
I think it's OK to be mean to Philippe as long as it is funny, and I thought this was funny.
I also think this may be Liebot in disguise.
-
That's just hiding the black eye when Paul had to "tell her" something.
Also, Paul, can you read the new board from home? Do we have you back in your leisure time?
-
Paul was it deliberate irony to black out her eyes but leave her name tag in full view?
Also if you just edited the photo to drop the nametag in there from somewhere else, does she mind that it is a weight watcher's nametag?
Are you a bad friend Paul?
And why do babies like that always have an expression that reminds me of an angry mob heavy who is about to hurt me?
-

According to a useless trivia book they can get hiccups in the womb.

Mrs. del Vaca will tell you that is true.
-
gotta wonder if onstad will become a regular character
that one strip was cool (the first baby one) but ah hope it's not gon be a permanent thing
he's gotta figure out a way to write himself out of the strip or something, like he falls down an elevator shaft or it was all only a dream
-
i like the lie-bot in disguise idea. this could be another entry into the annals of "the saddest thing" only this time it actually happened!
btw this strip is now my desktop. only few have been so privileged.

Good Christ, why the pigpile?
Babies look like that because everyone wants to grow up to kick your ass.
Everyone.
-
Fair point

Also, Paul, can you read the new board from home? Do we have you back in your leisure time?
Yes and Yes. However, I can still only reach the board with the aid of a proxy. no can do without. The new server hasn't helped, sorry. I'm just happy to be here at all.
~Paul
-
Well, it's not the IP, and it's not the domain (because I haven't transfered the domain to the new server yet) so it HAS to be either your computer's setup or your ISP. I already checked the new IPs with the spam and porn lists and they came up clean.
So basically it's you who is fucked up, and not the world.
Just wanted to clear that up.
-

That's what my therapist tells me.

Yeah, mine too.
-
I'm really glad you guys are working through your issues here in the safe space. I really think we're making a lot of progress.
TOUAMB: ALL ABOUT CLOSURE
also education

Don't forget eyebrows.
-
My baby farts a lot also.
-
what is TOUAMB? i am so lost.
BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAABIIEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES!!!
-
She's coming along nicely.
A little observation. I've never heard this term used to describe the development of a human life, only inanimate objects, like to like explain how a roast is cooking, or projects like "my essay is coming along nicely." It's endearing though. And I'm sure she is occasionally basting in her own juices, and perhaps developing a thesis....
Also, Va, your comment about farting babies is funnier because it's is paired with a photo of your wee one looking so please with herself, while I imagine her bottom making a little pthbbt! noise. My Goodness!
-
what is TOUAMB? i am so lost.
The Official Unofficial Achewood Message Board.
See, we're officially unofficial because Onstad had previously washed his hands of us a la Pilate.

Wouldn't it be more factually correct to say we are Original instead of Official?
~Paul
-
but calling the board "original" would imply that there is more than one unofficial message board, and that this was the first one....
-
Yeah, it's like the Original Ray's, the REAL Original Ray's, Ray's Famous Original, etc. Everyone knows the real Ray's Pizza is on Lexington. The rest are just cheap imitations.

speaking for myself, i'm half convinced that everything that i say is in some way stolen from either cartoons or pop songs.
[that idea, in fact, is stolen. the part about pop songs. coo-coo-ca-choo.]

It it's not an obscure reference then what's the point in saying it? It's like the 6 degrees of 80's TV.
-
Paul, can you read the new board from home? Do we have you back in your leisure time?
Yes, inexplicably yes. I can now access this site proxy free.
~Paul
-
Awesome.
I am very happy with my new server!!!
How's the site's speed, responsiveness, etc. been over the past few days?
-

Without flaw.
~Paul
-
I, too, can access the board from home, when I could not for a while there.
-
site speed / responsiveness seems good. there had been noticeable lag periods previously, but 1) they were fairly few and far between 2) not necessarily server specific related.
so far, however, so good.
-
Well, there were DEFINITELY some problems at The Planet over the past, oh, SIX MONTHS with partial connectivity, lag, latency, and other things that basically meant that the server that housed plagiarist.com was either slow or inaccessible.
Anyway, this move to Liquid Web is a big positive step, even if I now have two open tickets for minor problems that have been unanswered for a week, and a billing problem (overcharge) that they still have not credited.
But I'm confident that once I get these issues ironed out that they'll be good. I've gotten pretty handy with the server software and security issues (even if I didn't upgrade phpBB when I needed to and was affected by that stupid worm). So all I need my datacenter to do is pretty much keep the hardware running and keep the big pipe connected and accessible.
And they have been very good in this regard so far. They haven't had downtime in over three years. That's a pretty good track record. And while I fully expect them to have *some* problems in the future (no datacenter is perfect) they have a good solid reputation.
Also, I am paying nearly twice what I was paying before, but if it means that the box will be up and fast it'll be *so* worth it.
A friend of mine had a site get "slash dotted" a few months ago, and his box never went down, never had too high of a load, and everything just WORKED. So that impressed me with Liquid Web enough to go with them.
Now I have a server that barely shows any load - before I was getting load warnings EVERY DAY. So I guess I should step up my hosting advertising a little - this new box could probably handle another 100 sites.
