I fell in love with their music upon hearing their latest album. I saw them in concert exactly two weeks ago today. I'm sure it wasn't their best show and I would love to see them again when they are in proper form. There were technical difficulties and Colin Meloy was having trouble with his voice so he ended the show early after only about 45 minutes. A big dissapointment to the fans, but what they did play was very very good. They began the show with an April fools prank by having every member of the band playing an instrument that wasn't his or her own [Colin was on drums]. It was horrible, but that was the joke and it really put everyone in a good mood. Unfortunately Colin did not remain in a good mood. The monitors across the front of the stage weren't working and Colin made several angry comments to the sound guy. We discovered later that some kids had merely unplugged the speakers. It seems like a good sound guy would have been able to suss that out, but he didn't. On one song, [Espionage] he placed his capo on the wrong fret and didn't realize it until just before the rest of the band was to enter the song. He exclaimed "Oh shit," briefly stopped the song to fix his capo, and then began again where he left off. A true pro move, but certanly very embarrasing. Earlier in the set he stopped the song to order a kid standing by the stage, right beside me actually, to put out his cigarette. He went on to suggest that everyone refrain from smoking while the band was playing. This recieved a loud round of applause and the guy with the cigarette put it out immediately. I would not have been as disapointed by the shortness of the set if it were not for the fact that they didn't play the two songs I was most looking forward to hearing [Eli The Barrow Boy and The Mariner Song]. The hand written set list was right in front of me and those songs were due up next. But Colin abruptly announced "That's it, I can't sing anymore" and briskly exited the stage.

They didn't play The Mariner Song, but Jenny Conlee played a short impromptu version for a few of us after the show.

I asked Chris Funk if it were true what i've read about Colin Meloy being difficult to work with. He started stammering and trying to find some way to discount what i'd heard without actually saying it wasn't true. I stopped him and told him I just made that up on the spot [which was true, I had]. He then said, "he can be a shit."

Wow o_O
So, I guess it's good I didn't end up going? heh.
That april fools day joke sounded fun though.
Oh! and did they play 'We Both Go Down Together'? that's my fav. :D

i'm all about sixteen military wives and the bagman's gambit, right now, maybe also the sporting life. the whole album is great, though.
i'm sorry to hear colin's a little bit of a primadonna, but whatever. he makes great music.
paul, what is your method for meeting and talking to all of these Famous Musicians?

Sixteen Military Wives is silly.
It makes me laugh.

Yeah, really. Plus the pictures always kick ass.
When I was in Seattle over spring break, my friend and I planned to go see them, but it was sold out. Which actually suprised me, because when I saw them in Salt Lake a while back they opened for a band, and the show wasn't even close to sold out. I was bummed.
I still haven't heard the new record. Is it great?

I'm a sinner and have not yet listened to ANY Decembrists, which is INSANE, but I saw a steel guitar and an accordian, so I'm down. Which one should I get first?
-
I never really liked any of their stuff until this album, actually, which is why I was so surprised by it (this album being called Picaresque). Some people have said that their EP The Tain is pretty good, but I just thought it was silly.

No, you should have gone, we had a great time anyway.

Yes, it was the second song, just like on the record. Well, third song if you coun't their April fools song.

I guess they played everybody's favorite songs except mine.

Basically I'm just like paparizzi.
Yeah, really. Plus the pictures always kick ass.
Thank you.

Funny you should mention that because the show was sold out here as well and I wouldn't have gotten in except for the fact that I did something very unusual which I had never done before. I guess I was feeling guilty over the fact that I have taken so much joy from their music without paying for it [Thanks Amber] and I wanted to give back to the band without having to buy a CD I already posess. So at about four in the afternoon I arrived at the club with a home made fruit basket. Luckilly I showed up at the club just as their road manager was arriving. I gave him the fruit and he put me on the guest list.
I also think this band may have been particularly friendly towards me because their tour poster was sporting a picture of this guy (http://www.antekprizering.com/sullivanjohn3021.jpeg).
