Title: Snacking.
Post by: St_Zartan on May 05, 2005, 06:03:59 pm
What are your favorite snacks? It doesn't have to be something you eat all the time - if I must move hand to mouth, I usually suck on a diet soda or eat a column of saltines, but neither are anywhere near my Top Five list.

Some things I will treat myself to:

- Yogurt-covered pretzels.
- Andy Capp's Hot Fries (narrowly edging out Flamin' Hot Cheetos).
- Garlic Bagel Crisps.
- Any Combos with that salty, crumbly "cheddar cheese" substance inside.
- Reese's anything.

Come on, people, this board is just fuck*ng dead today.

I tend to run hot and cold on particular candies -- much like I do with music, I overindulge until I burn out, then return to it in a few months' time. I've really been on an Atomic Fireball kick lately, although watching Mythbusters last night on exploding jawbreakers may convince me to get off it quickly (or, I don't know, start nuking them to see if I die). Before that, it was stolen-from-the-dining-hall white chocolate chips, which was a deep infatuation followed by a swift and terrible burnout.

On the "salty things" front, I do loves me some Baked Lay's. Pretzel sticks are also very nice, although yogurt pretzels don't quite work for me.

I love peanut butter chocolate anything.  I have a great weakness for cookies of most kinds.  For salty snacks, I don't have any clear favorites, but I love cheese and cheese flavored things.  I don't really have any brand loyalties when it comes to snacks, other than Diet Coke.

For spicy snacks, I like Wasabi Peas (http://www.vinetreeorchards.com/wasabipeas.htm) or those red hot peanuts you can get in a little plastic tube at gas stations.

For candy, I like any variation of the Mike & Ike.  The gas station near my office currently carries "Root Beer Float" Mike & Ikes, which are very, very good.  Super Hot Tamales (http://www.hometownfavorites.com/hot-tamales.htm) are nice too;  They're not quite Atomic Fire Balls, but they have more bite than normal Hot Tamales.

I also think now would be a good time to admit my addiction to gas station food in general.  I'm a big fan of all of the roller grill items that seem to be springing up these days.  This is American innovation at its finest.  I really liked 7-11's taquitos when I first discovered them, then Quik Trip came out with a vastly superior taquito product (http://www.quiktrip.com/products/products_taquitos.asp).  But I've seen everything from Egg Rolls to cheeseburgers to unholy pancake/breakfast sausage rolls cooking on those grills.

*Cherry Coke (the only Coke product I drink. Pepsi owns.)
*yogurt raisins
*cherry bites (the little red "licorice" dealies). I used to eat a pound a week in high school
*Doritos. But only real Doritos. None of this ranch or pizza crap.

Wasabi Peas are so yummy.  Also, Mike & Ikes used to have a plain root beer flavor, which was the best root beer flavored candy ever.  I go through phases, but not very often, where root beer flavored candy is all I snack on.

The new Black Pepper Jack (http://www.taquitos.net/snacks.php?snack_code=2392) Doritos are the best variation since the original.

Have you had those little gummy root beer bottles? I used to be a fuck*ng aphid when it came to those things. I haven't seen or tasted them in years, and they're probably not nearly as good as I remember...

OR ARE THEY

Those hard candy Root Beer Barrels were overwhelmingly root beery, though. How did they do that.

I prefer chewy to gummy, but I did like those.  I haven't had those, or the barrels, in years.  I think I feel a craving coming on...

However, I do love those little red bears, which are quite gummy.  But I haven't had them in quite some time, either.

If you haven't triend the Ketchup Potato Chips found in the above link, do so SOON.  They are very tasty.

Also, anyone else remember PB Max?  Best candy bar ever, in my mind.

-Krunchers brand jalapeno potato chips
-bareass pretzels: no chocolate, no yogurt, no mustard, no cheese, Snyders for preference
-Combos, but only the pretzel and cheese kinds. Those cracker ones are dog shit.
-Fritos and that horrilicious Frito-Lay jalapeno cheese dip that comes in the little cans
-Morningstar farms Buffalo "chick'n" wings
-Th' wife and I ran up to Canada recently and one of the things we came back with was a couple of packages of Coffee Crisp candy bars. Those things are basically like treasure and really need to be easily available in the States.

Thank you, this made my day.

But man, you people eat some scary stuff.  I mostly eat chocolate, pretzels, and plain salted popcorn (no butter).  I won't eat any candy bar that hadn't been invented yet when I was eight years old.  Seriously - someone gave me some newfangled candy bar the other day that had caramel, peanut butter, chocolate, and pretzels in it.  It's no wonder people think the younger generation is going to hell.

These (http://www.animenation.com/71146000148.html) are good as hell.

Also these (http://www.hmsa.com/risingcost/feature/part3/2.asp)

The Musubi link is also my new employer, HMSA (until I can get another Federal job, anyhow)..

This (http://whatscookingamerica.net/History/LocoMocoHistory.htm) is a standard dish here. I've tried it many times but after gaining 30 pounds in six months I've sworn off it forever. My favorite variation is fried rice (with spam, sausage, etc.) Meatloaf, grilled onions, gravy, and two eggs.

This shit will kill you.

I just assumed that first link would be to some flavor of Pocky when I saw the URL. I've never actually tried Pocky but they look good.

I've never eaten Spam or scrapple and I don't think I can ever bring myself to try either.

Holy moley that all looks so good

I haven't had a good prawn cracker since I lived in Australia, though - they were this big, broad things that could just melt in your mouth.

The quotes on the Loco Moco page are terrific, by the way. I am going to have to try that recipe, probably on a Fuck You Friday with a big stack of old comic books at my side.

Little Debbies.  Especially Fudge Rounds, Oatmeal Cream Cakes and Star Crunch.

Pickles.  Dill Pickles.

Salt and Vinegar flavored potato chips.

Peanuts in almost any style.  I really like raw unsalted peanuts for some reason.  Hope that doesn't make me too Pat-like.

I like that it's a relatively big reward for something so effortless - that's over two months. You can pack a lot of living into the time awarded for, say, giving in and trying a Scotch egg.

Also: oatmeal cream pies (mentioned by RKB and AW) would be pretty much a perfect snack if they were more filling. On the flavor level, they strut around all cocky because they're hard to beat and they know it, but damned if I couldn't eat one the size of a large pizza and still be hungry five minutes later.

A co-worker mentioned Lik-M-Ade, a Slim Jim, and a pickle as her childhood trifecta of baseball-watchin' snacks. That is the first time outside of a dare I have seen those three things in tandem.

But what qualifies as different? What if I try a purple bell pepper? I've had lots of green, yellow, &c ones but never purple. And what about the first time I tried grilled pineapple?

We need some clarification here.

I am pretty sure that the Scotch egg takes away in alarming deep-fried-ness more lifespan than it awards in innovation. That said, I still want to try one.

I have a very weird and strong love-hate relationship with food. Meaning that I am again on the Hacker's Diet (http://www.fourmilab.ch/hackdiet/www/hackdiet.html) which is basically just pretty talk for starvation.  That's right, I made myself an Eat Watch and lost a bunch of weight, then I moved to Alaska, stopped counting calories, and my trousers eventually stopped being loose and baggy. Starvation - scientifically, that's pretty much all any diet is composed of, and you would be wise to admit that to yourself, rather than gorging on pork rinds and soda and calling that a diet. You ain't foolin nobody, Atkins. Proctology and cardiology are gonna be big business any day now. If you eat nothing but bacon and eggs you are going to get cancer of the ass and a clogged aorta. I hate to break it to you like that.

Anyway. Man, I am cranky. I like dill pickles, oat bran powder, big glassfuls of water, Diet Coke, iceberg lettuce...

Damn it! That's not true! That's not true at all! I want a mighty slab of cheesecake, a rack of lamb, some naan bread and chicken vindaloo, a tureen full of chocolate, some Doritos, poutine (I have never tried it before but all my Canadian friends swear by it), crab legs, lasagne, sashimi, dim sum chicken feet with pork glaze, the works. Dammit! Just get me a trough or a funnel or something.

Okay, I had better go get something healthy to eat before I gnaw off my own ear. Ciao!

Whoo. This thread really ballooned while I was out watching Firefly in someone else's common room. (GO COLLEGE)

Anyway, Zartan: I was watching Mythbusters late last night (WHOO COLLEGE), and they were studying news reports dealing with heated jawbreakers, well, exploding. Through rigorous analysis involving an artificial steel-toothed mouth, they determined that, when heated, large jawbreakers (the big ones with lots of layers) tend to heat unevenly, making one inner layer molten and liquid while keeping the crust intact. This tends to make them structurally unstable. I am not sure whether the same principle applies to Atomic Fireballs, but damn if I don't want to try!

Also, why are the Japanese so good at making candy? I'm almost out of the bag of melon gummies I bought a couple of weeks ago, and it saddens me, 'cause damn. They were very melony, in a totally natural-tasting way. It was rad.

Linnea: I understand your relationship with food; as I am pretty sure this thread makes clear, I am a man of Immediate_Cravvings. I am also a man who no longer has the metabolism of an adolescent ferret. This is why I drink as much diet soda as I do: it fills the snacky impulsive emptiness with calorie-free liquids and bloaty gas, and my unfortunate sensitivity to caffeine usually takes the edge off of whatever's left of the old appetite. I'm saving my calories for booze, dammit.

Also: I have had poutine once, but it was made for me by an honest-to-goodness Canadian, so I think that counts.

Poutine is, quite simply, god food.

EDIT: V, just how hot is the inside of your mouth? Is it Science Hot? Is there cause for Alarm?

I second AW's Little Debbieness, but typically only for the chocolate offerings. Fudge Rounds, Fudge Brownies, and (especially lately) Devil Squares tremble in my presence.

At Easter, I can eat n Reese's Peanut Butter Eggs, where n is the number of Reese's Peanut Butter Eggs manufactured for the season.

The same formula applies at Christmas for the Little Debbie Christmas Tree Cakes, even though there's no chocolate.

Doughnuts. I offered to work a shift for a girl (and cut into my girlfriend time on the weekend), but she had to bring me doughnuts. A dozen Dunkin' Donuts arrived for me today. I didn't eat dinner. I had doughnuts.

Mmm, Nutty Bars.  Ate a lot of those while I was preggerant.

Ben and Jerry's mint oreo cookie was the best ice cream I ever had, but I guess I was the only person who liked it because it does not exist anymore.  Bryer's mint chocolate chip is a fair runner-up..
