Title: earthquake
Post by: arkabee on June 02, 2005, 12:50:19 pm
supposedly 3.8 on the richter scale, but the voice on the radio said they might rate it higher, later.

we get them time to time, but this was the first one i'd ever felt/remembered/been awake for.

rather disconcerting, alarm went off, i got up to pound the snooze button into submission, and flop/thud back onto the bed when all of a sudden i think "shit, did i just flop onto the bed hard enough to make it move oddly?".

weirdness.

no damage in the town that i could see, but who knows what joy and wonder this new day doth bring.

I was about ten miles from the epicenter of the 1994 Northridge earthquake (http://www.nbc4.tv/news/2766157/detail.html).  There's nothing quite like waking up at 4:31 in the morning to a 6.7.

Ark, if the New Madrid gets the projected big one, you are Screwed.

I have always wanted to feel a teeny tiny earthquake.    I know if you come from California this must sound like insanity.  I've been close to a few but never close enough.

You don't feel teeny tiny earthquakes.  You feel big ones.  And once you realize what you're feeling, you just have to ride it out.

The 1994 Northridge quake was utterly fuck*ng terrifying.  There was a brief moment afterwards where I thought that was cool.  However, it had more to do with the sound of every car alarm in the city of Los Angeles going off at the same time than anything else.

The aftershocks are, in some ways, even worse.

In 1985 we had one that we could feel in OHIO. Ohio for God's sake! That was weird - we were sitting in class when there was this rumbling noise and the building did a little vibration/shake thing for 2-3 seconds.

We all figured one of the boilers in the basement a-sploded or something. But it was actually an earthquake.

well, it seems to have been re-evaluated as a 4.0, but no reported damage, thank goodness.

this is interesting:
"Ironically, the quake occurs as a team of approximately 45 business executives and public policy makers plan to tour the New Madrid Fault zone for several hours today."
from : http://www.kait8.com/Global/story.asp?S=3421754&nav=0jshaZQ0
there's really no point in reading the article,
the quote is just humorous.  i can just imagine them all thinking "oh, that was an earthquake? oh, then that's nothing to worry about!" gah!

you were feeling one of these little ones, perhaps?

i seriously think that most current "leaders" of the mississippi valley think that when the quake comes that the Army Corp of Engineers will just come in and fix everything in a couple of days.

i wonder what the economic effects of making the miss'ip untraversable are per day?

I don't know when the last time Philly had an earthquake, but there was a little one when I was a kid that people didn't know was an earthquake until people on the news said we had one.

We do get lots of rain and power outages during hurricane season, but otherwise we're thankfully free of natural disasters other than blizzards, and even those are nothing like in the mid-west.

I used to be one of those public policy makers to which you refer.  My agency created all the building codes for Kentucky, the far western part of which is directly in the New Madrid region.

One of my old boss's favorite stories was about when he was in Paducah for some sort of earthquake task force meeting and they had a 5.0 while he was sitting on the can in his hotel room.  Funny stuff.

i was refering more to people like:
"A federal judge ruled to keep John Ford on house arrest instead of throwing him back in jail. The former state senator is still required to wear an electronic monitoring device and can only leave his Collierville home for work, church and visit his attorneys." (http://www.wreg.com/Global/story.asp?S=3414355)

and the rest of this most recent batch, (http://www.newschannel5.com/content/news/11661.asp)

(incidentally, that 2nd link is hilarious. i mean, how do you top "So that means, four lawmakers, even if convicted, have been grandfathered in and their pension is protected."?)

as opposed to useful people who try to do good things yet end up with it all pissed away as some SOB chooses graft over public service and takes a 30 year long dump on his constituency.

in other words, no offense meant, i was talking out my ass due to
localized bullshit.
