One Night in China?

Yeah, I've seen it, although it lacks something from the One Night In Paris video for:

1) Featuring Chyna rather than Paris Hilton
2) Being shot and released by the couple intentionally to sell DVDs

there's just something about unintended skankness that makes it more exciting.  Also, Paris is hott and Chyna is kinda freakish.

Ha, good points, well made.
Chyna is a "victim" of steroid over-use and it is all too visible in the clips i've seen.
Acne everywhere and a larger than average clitoris.
Yech.
I was drawn like a moth to a transexual flame.

I only had brief exposure to rasslin' my junior and senior years of High School, 1992 and 1993.  We ordered a Wrestlemania or two and I was a fan of The Undertaker.  More precisely, I was a fan of The Undertaker's manager, whose name now escapes me.  The dude who always carried around the urn.  He was awesome.

I love how they actually went to the nation of China so as to justify the title. As an appetizer to your embarrassing pro-am sex reel, here's X-Pac acting like a dipshit near the Great Wall. AWESOME

Any amount of X-Pac is enough to dangerously strain my tolerance for X-Pac. I don't know what happened along the line to transform him from "fresh-faced young contender" to "most likely to be seen buying cinder blocks for his Firebird" but it's like - dude - OK - put your tongue back into your face and work a match.

I think I've downloaded one short clip, and that was enough - oh holy night, was it ever enough. I have also seen screenshots around the web (the review at Something Awful and the Rotten Library entry on Chyna [which is surprisingly sympathetic] spring immediately to mind) and, yeah, there is something sort of physiologically crooked with that lady.

Gimpson, the fat dude with the Undertaker-controlling urn was named - get ready - Paul Bearer. One of my favorite wrestling moments is going to a RAW taping back in the mid- to late 90's and seeing some fat kid with a freshly-purchased plastic replica urn two rows down do a Paul Bearer impression for just about the entire show.

My last exposure to wrestling was in the 70's and early 80's.  My brother and I would watch Mid-South Championship Wrestling out of Memphis on Saturday afternoons.  Guys like Superstar Bill Dundee, Tojo Yamamoto, Koko B. Ware and Jimmy Hart.  Now that was rasslin.

Hence the term, "X-Pac heat"

Paul Bearer a.k.a. Percy Pringle III. I think he just had major surgery.

Anyway. A.J. Styles is the darling of the IWC right now and for once it's derserved. I just wish Don West didn't feel the need to constantly add Phenomenal to his name. He's great, we get it. But hey, at least he actually calls the freaking match, including mistakes. As opposed to some pedophiles on other shows that I could name.

Anybody ordering One Night Stand? I'm not firmly in the "see how it goes and consider a replay" camp.

No discussion of former wrestling personalities with web presences is complete without a mention of The Ultimate Warrior (http://www.ultimatewarrior.com/), who is pretty much just batshit crazy at this point. Old news to a lot of you, but for those just coming in, or with only vague wrestling memories - hoo boy, are you in for a treat. He's 100% Serious about everything - change your name to "Warrior" and appear on MSNBC as a political commentator? WHY THE FUCK NOT, GRRRRRAHHHHHH

And don't miss his KEY CONCEPTS (http://www.ultimatewarrior.com/soulkeyconpts.htm)!

And his erudite statement (http://www.411mania.com/wrestling/news/newsboard.php?news_id=11472). Count how many times his own name appears in that. Go on, I'll wait. 20. Wow. And his mic skills don't even begin to touch the Most Electrifying Man in Sports Entertainment.

It's pretty easy to become jaded, especially with twenty-four-hour, high-speed Internet access and almost literally innumerable websites all falling over themselves to amuse you with the freshest bleeding dose of shocking / funny / whatever, so it's refreshing to discover that there are some concepts just too big for the "batshit crazy" bucket. Congratulations, Jim "Warrior" Hellwig. Yeah, I know - Hellwig.

There was a special holiday issue of the "Warrior" comic (oh yes) in which he beats up Santa pretty badly and, for some reason that escapes me, ends by trussing the jolly fat man up in bondage. If Wrestlecrap weren't such candy-asses about maintaining an archive, I could show you.

People people we're 15 posts in! If somebody doesn't start bitching about Triple H soon the IWC Enforcement Squad is going to come down on us.

That said, which of the innumerable websites all falling over themselves &c &c does anybody out there follow?

And is there anyway to see ROH without buying DVDs? Stupid Netflix doesn't carry them and they have no TV deal.

Yeah, I liked the first Ultimate Warrior - the shorter one, who never spoke.

Then he up and sold the character to that Hellwig nutcase, and the world has never been the same.

Word. But then I've only see pictures of her that were airbrushed to an insane degree which is automatically several points off. It's the same reason I never got the whole Britney Spears thing.

And just to prevent this hijack from being hijacked: Melina's boobs are gross. Her entrance is dandy but that is one foul boob job.

Isn't Stacy Keibler the only diva to not have augmentations?
And as such is still the hottest of the lot.
I like HHH, especially the new 'tache and, as a UK resident, I get the one night stand show for free on a cable station.
I'm hoping the wwe players don't end up overrunning the whole show, especially as the card so far is lining up very nicely.
Ah, nostalgia!
Again, as a UKer, I have a good hook-up who keeps me up to date with ROH.
But i've not found anywhere on the net that will let you d/l ROH.

Anyone out there into the more laughable side of pro-wrestling should look at Wrestlecrap.com.
And TheDDT.com is a fairly funny wrestling site as well.

Oh, Christ, don't get me started (http://achewood.plagiarist.com/viewtopic.php?p=34687#34687). It's as though her face was genetically engineered to have one and only one expression - Smug Plutocrat.

But yeah, I'm totally with you on the "appreciating superficial beauty" thing: it really makes each day more of an aesthetic buffet*, having a taste for both the unconventional (ever read Dan Clowes' "Ugly Girls" in Eightball?) and the blatantly mainstream. Which is why I agree that Stacy Keibler is in fact the most beautiful of the - glk - "Divas" (the only time I can stand that word as it is commonly used is when Jim Ross is saying it, because his voice unintentionally throws it into a light absurd enough to be enjoyed), even though her genes pretty much ought to be harvested for the inevitable commercially available "Grow Your Own Girl Next Door" pods.

Quick - favorite ringside announcers - go!

*Yeah, I'm a lech, but hey - at least I'm subtle and fuck*ng inclusive about it.

Stacy is obviously the hottest. Molly wasn't enchanced and I'm not sure about Victoria (didn't she start out as a ho who broke up Eddie and Chyna?) but she's only hot when she's nuts and preferably paired with Stevie. Gail Kim would've looked better had she not had her's done.

I can't remember if I said this here or not, but I'll be fine with the "invasion" of ONS if Taz either makes them run away scared shitless like he did Lawler or if he just starts handing out ass whippings. Or a surprise appearance by Raven.

Best announce team? Taz(z) + Mike Tenay. Two weeks ago during MNM's entrance was a classic moment. Melina did her entrance and Cole says, "you can do that right?" And Taz starts to call Cole an idiot as per usual but then switches to, "wouldn't it be funny if I could? No, really. Wouldn't it be weird if I could do that?" That's the hardest I've laughed at somebody not named Christian in months.

For those who are TNA-less I present the Canadian Destroyer (http://www.cortjstr.com/images/canadian_destroyer.gif). The coolest yet least realistic finisher ever seen.

Cor....what I can say?
Thanks, big thanks!
I think that's got to be the single most dangerous finisher i've ever seen.
Essentially the poor sod taking the move has to backflip...ONTO HIS HEAD!
Nasty but unreal to watch. I think I marked out...jebus!
And those two matches are fricking great. I'm definitley going to have to convince my friends to get the wrestling channel.

Best announcers?
Hmm, I do like JR, Heyman and Joey Styles. Taz and JR were awesome at the 2004 rumble so i'd go with that.
Although Tenay and Dusty Rhodes in wcw were also hilarious.

Here's my confession: I like to mark out more or less completely while watching wrestling, and then analyze / smark it up afterwards. Of course, when the product is shit, it shatters the suspension of disbelief, but generally speaking, my attitude is no different from when I'd watch a movie or go see a play - I want to receive the performance as it was meant to be received, which is, I'll admit, tricky with wrestling as there are so many layers of performance involved and the fan's knowledge of / interaction with the sport is more or less factored into the crafting of that performance.

Basically, I don't care how much I know about what's going on behind the scenes; in the heat of the moment, I want my HOLY SHIT DID YOU SEE THAT moments (I watched that Canadian Destroyer GIF like twenty times in a row last night) and, with a good product, I get them. That's why I enjoy watching older matches (pre-McMahon's testimony / "sports entertainment") - even if the partici##### are over the top, straining credulity with their appearance and action, the announcers are calling it completely straight. Gordon Solie was so good for this; the man had such a classic sportscaster demeanor and voice. Listening to him at times, it's hard to believe he was in on the game, if you know what I mean. I wish I could find more recordings of matches he called with some of the old greats.

Cort's given me shit before for saying that I like JR, but I do, pretty much for the same reasons I liked Gorilla Monsoon - they're just blatantly blustery face announcers who, at the worst of times, simply CANNOT BELIEVE WHAT THEY'RE SEEING. Monsoon and Heenan together was magic.

You guys should see Jerrell Clark (sp?) take the Destroyer. After landing on his head he basically bounces back up onto his feet then crashes down onto his back then he just lays there.

I'm not saying JR totally sucks but he's not what he used to be. He constatly miscalls moves (I don't think he even remembers what the Unprettier is anymore) which bugs me. But he, and to a lesser extent Don West, sometimes keeps everything turned up to 11. When he's yelling, "OH MY GAWD DID YOU SEE THAT SIDE RUSSIAN LEGSWEEP KING?!" and then the guy gets legswept into retaining wall there's nowhere for JR to go. When a regular move is called as if it were death when something actually badass happens he can't react appropriately. Granted I'm exaggerating a bit to make my point but you see what I mean.

HOLY SHIT DID YOU SEE THAT moments, eh? Do you watch TNA? And did you see Turning Point in December? If not I believe I have something that you desparately need to witness.

I do agree that being "smart" ruins things sometimes. Every time I watch Paul London I'm sad because I know what he could actually be doing. And they won't let him use the London Calling because it's Kidman's move. And for some reason they let him do the London Underground but just call it the 450 splash. But other times being smart helps. I think the WMXX main event was 20 times better if you knew Benoit was awesome and always got screwed. And if you "knew" that Triple H had too much backstage control and would never drop the title. And if you "knew" that Shawn had almost as much pull and gets to pick and choose his losses. For the finish the smarts were on their feet yelling, "tap! Tap you sonofabitch tap!" that much louder.

Well somebody has to bring it up so what about the Lita thing? She doesn't make a good heel but I think it was the right move from WWE's perspective. Because now the "marks" yelling at her for storyline reasons are drowning out the "you screwed Matt" chants. And those chants were spreading which was the last thing they wanted.

I think the xxx/AMW cage match NEEDS to be distributed!
Jesus christ, that was awesome!
I think my heart momentarily stopped when Skipper goes for the hurracanrana...off the top of the cage!
Just as a low-down, heated brawl that was stunning. The interplay with the 'cuffs was cool, good way to balance the match.
PM it to as many people as want it, it's brilliant.
I'm now hoping for region 2 dvd releases of TNA.

Hmm, smart or mark? I tend to sit firmly in the mark camp, if only because the scott keith's (all of 411 in fact) of this world make me ashamed.
But I like to get riled up and excited for matches, that's what it's all about!
I find myself watching ECW and TNA for those holy shit moments but when somehting big happens in the WWE I mark out twice as much.
I guess i'm just a WWE fan!
Bless them though, they've been treating fans damned well. Check out the flair dvd, the benoit and guerrero packages and the ECW disc.
Arguably too one-sided in their retrospective but still...great stuff for old and new fans.

Lita? Edge? I'm loving the heat they get just by being but there's nowhere to go unless Matt comes back.
And I don't see that happening sadly.
Awesome though the matches (edge/matt) could be I really don't think Hardy will be back.
Shame, it could be close to a HBK/Bret Hart type rivalry.

Ooh, CM Punk seems to be one of WWE's top interests.
Anyone seen his stuff with Raven? The straight-edge angle?

It helps to know that leading up to that Skipper had been doing a rope-walk hurricanranna so often it had become boring. It was like the 619 because it was cool but the set-ups become more and more contrived just so he could hit the move every match. This was his way of reminding the fans how badass this move really is. And according to interviews he called it on the fly. I loved that the fans realized what he was trying to do and started chanting, "please don't die" while he was still climbing. And again, the cuffs had been a focal points for weeks during the build which added even more poetic justice to their usage.
I'm not sure about the DVD. The two matches I sent you were awesome but the rest of the show was kind of meh. Most of their PPVs have been like that. One or two **** matches and some filler. Plus I'm still mad at them for totally fuck*ng up The Alpha Male's title shot. The fans were actually chanting "drop the title" at Jarret and Monty was so freaking over. Bastards.

Scooter bugs me. He's so obviously biased that he trashes most everything and everybody not named Benoit/Hitman. Although the first time he saw the Destroyer he had my favorite reaction, "HOLY FUCK, what was that? I mean, DAMN! (http://www.insidepulse.com/article.php?contentid=28961)" Rumor is there's going to be a special edition re-release of Rise and Fall of ECW where it will come with One Night Stand in a 3 or 4 disc set.

I missed that angle in ROH but pretty much concurrently in TNA there was and angle where Punk and somebody else were in Raven's Flock when he was feuding with Father Jim Mitchell and the New Church. Needless to say Raven was turned on and many a Pepsi Plunge resulted. I believe it finshed up with Raven vs. Punk in A Clockwork Orange House of Fun match.

Oh, now you're just making stuff up.

PLEASE, tell me you're just making stuff up.

I haven't watched wrestling in a couple years - I tuned out about two weeks after the Triple H/Kane bit with the Katie Vick "necrophilia" video. If I'm flipping around and I see it, I'll watch for a few minutes. I hop on wwe.com every once in a while to see who has the belts. It took Wikipedia for me to learn about the Lita/Edge thing. Not real clear on the details of why this ended up with Matt being the one out of a job, but it seems like one of those things where there's no going back. They'll always be heels in the fans' hearts from here on out. They STILL get on Hebner's case with "You screwed Bret," especially in Canada, and that was like 50 years ago in wrestling-time. Most fans will go with the tides on storyline face/heel turns, but the real-world shit sticks FOREVER.

I still get the urge to watch steroid junkies make millions of dollars to pretend to compete, but now, when I do, I just watch Major League Baseball.

Actually now that they're on TV they've dropped the Clockwork Orange part. Basically there's a section of chain-link fence hanging down in the ring with various weapons attached to it. Raven invented it and reference like that are his thing. Every promo ends with "Nevermore," his finisher is called the Evenflow, &c.

Had he kept it to himself they'd just move him to Smackdown and that would've been that. But since he whined in his blog they decided that he couldn't co-exist with Lita and Edge anymore so somebody had to go. Since he's been off TV for month while the other 2 have been major title contenders it was an easy decision for them.

Anyway, draft time. Any thoughts on the first pick?

HOLY SHIT THAT WAS GREAT

Seriously, that was an incredible match. Thank you CortJstr. I didn't realize until it was all wrapped up, but the pacing was just about perfect - which, in my experience, can be tricky with cage matches.

Cellardoor mentioned the Ric Flair DVD collection - that's the only wrestling DVD set I own, at the moment, and it is pretty much everything a fan could hope for from a collection like that: all the promos / skirmishes / interviews leading up to the big matches, then aftermath - if I remember right, it's like nine hours of material, putting it all into context. Are there any other DVD collections (available or announced) that measure up to this standard?

Don't mention it. I really think that TNA's no-escape rule really helps the cage matches. There's no dead spots while one guys climbs v-e-r-y slowly for no reason. I think this is the same reason the Ultimate X match has worked so well compared to a traditional ladder match. I wanted to see a BME but I realize that move is a little lighthearted for the situation. And thus far they've lived up to the stipulation, though the obvious feud has helped (Daniels won the X-title at the next PPV and Skipper wants it).

I realize that the cage match over shadows basically anything ever but what did you guys think of the X-Division match? Aside from the ending of course.

If you appreciate ECW the forthcoming special edition release of Rise and Fall sounds like it'll live up to the Flair standard.

Don't get me started on the Flair promos.
Never has a blustery, be-mulleted man made me think "YES! He speak the truth!".
Learn to love it, learn to live with it but diamonds are forever and so is Ric Flair. Whoooo!

Is it me or is that six-sided cage taller than the wwe cage?
Maybe it's just 'cause the ring is smaller.
Anyway, I really enjoyed the x-divison match. That's the pace and style of rasslin' i've come to appreciate after watching old wcw cruisers and ROH.
The crossbody out of the crowd, the story of the finishers and reversals, all excellent stuff. Petey seems like a natural heel too.
Only dissapointment was the non-destroyer finish. I was hoping to see that in the context of a match.
Great stuff though. Add AJ styles in and i'm sold.

DVDs...um, check out the Hard Knocks Benoit dvd. A good mix of ECW, WCW and WWE matches as well as some of his early japanese stuff.
The guerrero dvd is also pretty good along with Foley's latest collection.
Neither of these are up to the level of the flair dvd, mostly because they're centered around documentaries.
I think the flair dvd is as good as it gets really.

My mission for you peeps is to find Low Ki vs Amazing Red at ring of honour's Road to the title. If you can d/l that match you'll see the most contrived yet arresting opening to a match...ever!

Edit: Holy crap! Did half the stuff I just read actually happen on Raw?
Cena drafted?
Genuine ecw wrestlers on Raw?
Rhyno? I thought he was fired?
Damn, the ppv is now feverishly anticipated!

I don't think I heard about that. I guess people are too busy going on about Samoa Joe (c) vs. CM Punk.

Yup. Rhyno was let go following WM21 but his no-compete clause means he can't work any where else until July anyway so they decided to let him come back (as Rhino) for ECW. I wonder how they'll handle some of the people under contract. Will they acknowledge Simon Dean is Nova and that Lita=Miss Congeniality? I'm guessing not, that they'll just appear at the PPV then come back the next night on Raw as their regular characters and nothing will be said.

So now Eric has Teddy by the balls. Cena could get drafted back (lame!). He could get traded for about 19 other people. Batista could get drafted (rumored since before Royal Rumble). Or Cena could drop the title and the new champion could get drafted.

It's pretty common knowledge that SD is in rocky territory with the Viacom situation and getting moved to Friday nights. I'm hoping they move a bunch of A-list guys over there to make it attractive to another network. And maybe go back to showing it live.

Check out the offical ECW page over at WWE.com.
They've got the BWO lined up for an appearance, meaning Stevie and Nova will revert back to a previous gimmick.
I'm pretty certain that lita will be with Edge as part of the raw team. Which means more heat due to having "turned" on ecw.
How this plays out on Raw I have no idea.

The draft is a good point to re-balance the smackdown roster. I think HBK switching would work but i'm certain the cena switch won't stick.
The way the rules are structured for the draft Cena could get drafted back to smackdown, then back to raw, and so on.
I have to say, this is one of the most interesting periods for WWE now.
They've begun to build new stars, established them even, and are still being burnt over ratings.
Wrestling does seem to be cyclical and if this draft goes well the interest may rise.
Personally, Cena on a live show is ideal and the first great step to winning back a solid audience.

Colour me intrigued! Nicely done Vince, you got my interest!
Edit: Ooh, ooh! Howsabout Christian heels his way to Cena's belt and then gets drafted!

That's weird. In their ECW title histories they list Rhyno and Tazz instead of Rhino and Taz. I know WWE is all about revisionist history but this is getting silly.

I kind of wish they went the route last year where the whole Smackdown roster was there live to hear the annoucement just so I could see Teddy Long's head explode. Then a bunch of heels would be all happy he was leaving leading to JBL whipping out his classic belt again.

Did you see it?
Huh?
Huh?
WWE presents ECW....what can I say, just...wow.
What a great happening.
Austin and Sandman sharing beers, Heyman tearing the WWE workers up, Awesome and Tanaka.
Styles and Heyman choking up.
God...just a great, great piece of wrestling history.
Re-order the ppv, d/l it, but the dvd, see this show!

I was kind of afraid the "crusaders" would take too much screen time and $35 is a lot of money so I decided to wait. The reports sounded good except for all the matches being ~10 minutes and the whole show ending at like 10:30.

What about him? What about Raven?

I did not see that coming. Raven's been a JTTS for so long I never thought that I'd see him with the NWA title. Damn. Of course I'm sure Samoa Joe will take it from him soon enough (if WWE doesn't come calling, that is).

I almost picked this up all impulse-stylezzz ("three discs! classic material!"), but then I thought, oh dammit WWF 80's stuff is like the textbook definition of "hit-and-miss". And, yeah, so far I've been reading mixed reviews. It's got quite a few matches - the Steamboat / Flair one is really what caught my eye - but come on, people : Ultimate Warrior vs. Bobby Heenan in a Weasel Suit Match? I love Heenan, but really. How many of these matches are ****+?

And I know that WWE will sometimes list lots of matches on a DVD but only have a few in their entirety, with clips representing the rest. That shit makes me crazy.

Anyone here seen it?

AND WHERE'S MY STEAMBOAT BOX SET

Eh, that's not really my kind of thing. I haven't even read any of the reviews. I wasn't really watching back then and actually I tend to be a fan of spot-fests. This is also why the Road Warriors set doesn't really interest me.

1 - Cort, thank you.

2- i'd never seen any TNA.

3- Mike Tenay.  I hate Mike Tenay.  I use to watch a lot of WCW, and i hate Mike Tenay.

4- Mike Tenay is impressing me.  His commentary on the Petey vs Saban match makes me want to hear him call more matches.  I had never heard Mike Tenay call out Shrilly before.  He's actually pretty convincing doing it.  Apparently, I did not hate Mike Tenay, insomuch as i hated Tony Schivione MORE than i thought.  WAY MORE THAN I EVER ASSUMED WAS POSSIBLE.

5- I have not finished watching that match, Mike Tenay calling out in a Shrill Voice impressed me too much.

6- So far, i am very impressed by the flow of this match.  The "coach" manager is doing an excellent job of being a ringside manager who interferes without actually interfering with my enjoyment of the match.  good psychology and they piece the spots into the flow very, very well.

7- thank you again.

In TNA they call Tenay "The Professor" because he knows the name of every move and promotion and isn't afraid to use this knowledge. He'll come out and say the Angel's Wings is a variant of the Pedigree. And when Samoa Joe appeared last week Tenay mentioned his nearly 2-year reign as ROH champ despite the fact that ROH is their most direct rival. Now "Screamin'" Don West does bug me sometimes. Although I do enjoy that he'll call fuck ups.

Yeah, Coach D'Amore is awesome as long as he keeps his shirt on. He legit trained both Petey and Sabin and does a damn fine moonsault for a man his size. It's called the D'Amorealizer. And as I said in the PM he does have a storyline reason for being "coach" because of the World X Cup.

Edit: Also starting 7/1 you can now watch TNA Impact for free on tnawrestling.com if you have Real Player. New episodes on Fridays.

they called him the professor on WCW Nitro and it came across as contrived because they, apparently, stifled him.

watched the end of the match, and for a screw-job it was extremely well done; it strengthened the feud.

me likee.

I still have to say that the O, Canada Nut-Stomp is one of the greatest contrived spots ever. Way cooler than the 619.

Wait until you watch the XXX vs. AMW match. Petey/Sabin looks like crap by comparison.

Okay people, TNA Impact is going to be on Spike Saturdays at 11pm and Tuesday mornings at midnight starting 10/1.

Line up for the first episode:
There will be appearances by: Shane Douglas, Raven, Larry Zbyszko, Tito Ortiz, Abyss, Sabu, Scott D'Amore, Jeff Jarrett, America's Most Wanted, and at least one "surpise."

This may be your chance to actually see a Canadian Destroyer (http://www.cortjstr.com/images/canadian_destroyer.gif) in non-gif form.

Wal-Mart is also doing an exclusive DVD package. You get 3 PPVs for $25. Victory Road (the first 3-hour PPV), Turning Point (the one I sent people clips of), and Lockdown (all cage matches).

This confuses me. Does this mean Alex Shelley fights them both or all three fight each other?

It's a 3-way with every man for himself. First pinfall or submission wins the bout.
