I have an idea. I think it's time to organize an Achewood Convention. We've talked about this before, but aside from a few of y'all spending an afternoon at the Washington zoo, there has never been a gathering of Achewood fans. And I think it's about time for that to occur, don't you think? The comic is pushing four years and this board is nearly two. Despite what Onstad may believe, I'm sure that most of his fans [a solid 70 percent at least] are well adjusted normal people. Wouldn't it be great to gather together in a room with like minded people eating Achewood themed food and listening to Achewood themed music? Also, perhaps watching Achewood themed multimedia presentations? I know I would.
Therefore I propose the First Annual Achewood Fans Convention to be held on September 24, 2005 in San Francisco California. The way I see it, the way to make this thing a big success we need a big attraction and the biggest attraction we'll ever have is to somehow manage to get Chris Onstad himself to attend. I think we can achieve this if we use the proper inticement. I'm talking of course about money. If enough people participate, i'm sure a modest stipend could be arranged. But the real money would be in the special Achewood Convention apparel and accessories he would have ample time to design and manufacture in advance of the gathering. Hey Onstad, do you want to sell, oh I don't know, 50-100 shirts in one afternoon? I'll bet you would, and you could if you come to the convention.
I've never organized anything like this before, but i'm sure it could be done. Who thinks this is a good idea?

I wouldn't be able to go, likely, since that's really far away, and since I have school, I wouldn't be able to stay longer than a weekend, so it wouldn't really be worth it financially. As much as that is a totally awesome idea in which I would like to participate.
-
I like the general idea but have no possible way of getting to San Francisco on that weekend, so... yeah. Maybe it would be better to open consideration of where and when. Also, three months is a way inadequate amount of time to plan a convention of any size, especially if actual hotel space is involved. Trust me on this.
-
Seconding V's concerns. Do not underestimate the terror of trying to run even a minicon. Actually, in some ways (getting any kind of respect from hotels, frex) minicons are more agonizing to run than big cons.
-
I don't know, Paul. Couldn't you come up with a more expensive venue? I understand Tokyo is even farther away and more costly...
Kidding, sort of. Great idea, I'd love to participate but I don't see the finances for a trip to San Francisco coming together this year.
-
Okay, so I've thought about this more. (Perhaps way too much, actually.) My thoughts are that there are a lot of factors here that need to be considered carefully before we make any firm commitments. Here are the ones I've thought of:
1) Target Audience / Publicity
Simply put, who is this con for? Is it for just the Acheboard crew, or is it intended to be aimed at all Achewood fans, TOUAMB-reading or not? If the intent is to reach out broader than this board, we also have to figure out how to publicize it to a broader Achewood fan audience. This is bound to be problematic unless we can get Onstad on board.
2) Location
This is pretty obviously a big deal; you want a location that is as convenient as possible to the most number of attendees. This means that you can't just pull a location out of your hat and go with it -- you actually need to figure out who is coming from where and find a decent compromise. (This is especially important if it's a small group, since with a sufficiently small group there will usually be obviously more or less convenient locations. If most of the people attending your con live in the southeast, it might be best to shoot for Atlanta over San Francisco.) Don't assume it has to be in a huge city if the attendance will be relatively small; as long as the location has a decent hotel willing to put up with a convention and reasonable amenities (restaurants, transportation hubs, etc.), its size is unimportant.
3) Costs
This is sort of tied up in location, but it's still a big deal. How much is this going to cost people, and is this a cost that your target attendees can pay? This is particularly important with something like a webcomics gathering, when a lot of your target audience is college kids and the like with limited incomes. Think about this.
4) Timing
Obviously, choose a weekend that people are going to be able to get free. This is mostly obvious -- major holiday weekends are probably bad, as are late September dates for college students, and so on.
5) Activities
The crux of the matter: what will actually happen at the convention? Will there be a lot of scheduled events, or is the focus just socialization? Do you have enough stuff to take up the length of the convention? An Achewood con strikes me as particularly problematic in this regard, since there's less intrinsically to do in regards to Achewood than there are other, more active enjoyments. You can't really just sit around and read the strips, you know? Where do you see these "multimedia presentations" coming from, anyway?
6) Guests/Onstad
I sort of have my doubts that Onstad will be willing to come to this sort of thing, given his apparent attitude towards the fans and towards this board in particular. You're right that merchandising might sway him, but I hesitate to bank on a massive merch rush; I don't want it to become an unspoken assumption of the con that everyone will buy a T-shirt. It also strikes me as having much potential for awkwardness.
Thoughts?
-
I would much rather go someplace where 3-10 of the longstanding members of the board are going to be also and hang out socially for a day or two then attend any size convention for the comic. I love the comic but it's not as big a draw as meeting and hanging out with some of you guys.
Also the poll needs a third option reflecting the idea of a social gathering without the need to organize a 'convention'. That's a pretty good idea.
V-Adore - good effort but you're thinking way too hard!
-
Ha. This is too, too weird. Too much weird. :|
-
Seconding V-Adore's and Alohadawg's comments.
-
Ok, V, thanks for that post. You've raised a lot of issues that i've thought about, but didn't address. Let me see if I can answer your questions from my perspective.
1. Target Audience/Publicity: I am banking on Onstad's participation. If he's not interested, then my plan falls apart. If he is on board, it can be assumed he would want there to be as much participation as possible and would therefore advertise the event on his site.
2. Location: I chose San Fransico because I think Onstad lives somewhere in that vicinity. I want to make it most convienient for him as to encourage his participation.
3. Cost: I don't have any idea what it would cost to put it on. But whatever it cost the laws of finance dictate that the greater the participation the lower the cost per individual.
4. Timing: I originally was thinking August as a date, but I moved it to September because there is something else going on in Berkely that weekend, but as you've already pointed out, even September is too early. I hadn't considered the fact that kids are back in school at that time either. So maybe we should shoot for next summer sometime. I don't care really.
5. Activities: For me, the focus will be primarily social. I really want to meet you guys. I wouldn't mind meeting Onstad either, i'm sure he's not as mean as he acts on the internet, but I only want him to be there so as to attract you to come. As for activities, I have labeled this a convention, but I see it as more of a party than anything else. The major activity will be consuming adult beverages and socializing with your fellow acheheads. I was thinking about maybe something that involved cooking, but I don't know how that would work being that we would be in a foreign city and with no kitchen. As for multimedia presentations. I don't know actually. I was thinking those people who animate the strips like the Teodor bouncing his head and what not would put together a series of things like that maybe set to music or something. Hell I don't know, it wasn't a big part of my thinking, I was just throwing it out there. I wasn't expecting to be the sole creative director for this thing.
6. Guest/Onstad: I think if this thing is properly handled Onstad should be interested/excited to be a part of it. If he's not, well then I guess we don't have to worry about meeting any merchandise quotas.
But I'll say again, my prime interest is meeting and partying with you guys. The rest of the details are inconsequential to me.
~Paul

I like your enthusiasm. In reference to 5: meeting you guys attracts me to come, Onstad being there would be cool and nice but isn't a draw for me. It's not that I don't want to meet him or anything, but given the choice between meeting a group of board members in the middle of nowhere and meeting Onstad in SF, I'd be on my way to Nebraska happily.
In reference to 6: I just can't see Onstad getting excited about this unless it was lucrative (which is an excellent motivation). If anything, a largish group of "fans" within a few miles of home probably would result in him turning off all the lights in his house and hiding under his bed until the scheduled event was over.
-
Yeah, I don't see this happening any time soon, but it's a good idea.
I'm still saving up for Donny Dodecahedron's trip to eat weird food in Scandinavian countries.
-
Yeah, I have to confess I would almost enjoy a meetup more than a "convention." I think I'd have a much better time at a meetup with a few of y'all (or, heck, a lot of y'all) and a trip to the zoo/aquarium/movies/boozefeteria than I would some sort of formal convention. I definitely agree with AD that I would have more fun were Onstad not around; honestly, given that all my interactions with him have been either hostile or merchandise-related, I think I want to hold onto any hopes I have that his attitude towards me and mine isn't "hey you, worthless fan-thing, want a shirt?"
I definitely think that organizing it for next summer would be better than attempting it in September. This is a lot of work.

Kentucky is pretty centrally located for everything east of say Kansas. You guys are all welcome here.

*shakes fist from Kansas*
-
And that'd be only... *consulting greyhound.ca*... a little over a day on the bus for me!
Actually, upon looking at a map of America, Kentucky's closer than I assumed it would be. I have this problem where I assume that everything in America is really, really far away from here. It absolutely blew my mind when I visited SO at his parents' house in Vermont and it was closer to here than the anda-family home in Ontario. In my mind, America is a distant and magical land.
Edit: Got off-track. The point is that I'd like to hang out with you guys and would take an epic bus trip to a country that terrifies me to do so.
-
Kentucky would be convenient to my ancestral homelands in Ohio too.

Louisville is a 4 hour drive from Chicago. Not that that's in Canada, but it's getting close.

As the parent of a newish baby, I'm still trying to figure out which end is my ass, and I'm guessing Onstad's in the same boat. Maybe next spring is a better bet.
KY is fine by me; with the kid, it's got to be someplace I can drive to if I'm to attend. Especially since Pedro and I would both come, which would require buying not one, but two overpriced airline tickets if it were in SF.
Aaaaand...that's all the time I have.
-
Once the baby is a year old, you have to buy the airplane seat. Under that, they can fly in arms or lap for free. So obviously before next February is better for me, assuming I'm not flying stag to an Achewood orgy in which case, never mind.
-
Achewood orgy
This topic just got interesting. Wait, what's our m:f ratio?

Not good, if you're a dude. And i've seen pictures of most of you so guys so i'm guessing it's not good for the ladies either.
~Paul
-
Yeah, I get the feeling that a TOUAMB orgy would basically be the motliest orgy crue ever. I cannot see that ending in any way other than heartbreak.
-
We might have to get some outside talent. Or give up on the orgy idea and just watch videos of smells in her own filth.
-
Yeah, the only way to make an orgy fun for "people from the internet" is to hire escorts (for both the mens and womens).
-
I'm still saving up for Donny Dodecahedron's trip to eat weird food in Scandinavian countries.
Yeah, what's the status of that Donnybrook 'ol boy? You were gonna look into prices for a charter or sumthin'...

Either that or wait for the whole archetype system they have in Snow Crash.

Seconded. Walrus in Hot Pot beats comic convention anyday.

Achewood orgy
This topic just got interesting. Wait, what's our m:f ratio?
NO.
-
out of the top 50 posters, I think 9 are female and 34 are male - The other 7 could go either way and I assume some of the total do go the other way (So to speak), so it's not the optimal orgy situation unless we are talking a lot of curiousity and experimentation which I would encourage a lot more if the ratio was skewed the other way...
Ahem.
Anyhow, what is plan B?
-
Posters on another forum I hang out at meet for a Con every year. Last year's Con was held 10 min. away from where I live and work and this year is shaping up to be the same as well. That being said, on the day of the Con I went to go get my car's oil changed instead of hanging out with a bunch of guys who are dedicated fans of a 20+ yr. old anime.
I forgot what my point was.
-
Orgies aside, I'd probably be up for having a drink with anyone from the board, but I'm not in a position to make a big trek of it right now. Anywhere within a half-day drive from "the middle of everywhere" I could probably do.
I’m expecting this to be awkward and uncomfortable, or I’ll want my money back.

As a tangent, am I the only one who was surprised to see that Onstad is in the top 50 posters?
-
It doesn't surprise me that much that Onstad is in the top 50 -- there were a lot of posts initially (before the baby was born and/or boredom set in), and after you get through about the top fifteen post counts start dropping precipitously. There are some other posters on the top fifty I wouldn't have expected.
-
actually, on the whole drinks-but-no-orgy tip, aren't a bunch of the people here from the mid-Atlantic/DC area? As referenced earlier, there was some sort of Zoo trip. While I am not a zoophile like those people, I could see a semiregular thing of it, if only because if Achewood people stop being interesting, there's always beer.
-
Yes, I think there are enough DC area folks that it would be worth it to have a more beercentric gathering than the last one, and take pictures and make everyone else jealous about how much fun we are having without them.
-
Orgies aside, I'd probably be up for having a drink with anyone from the board
Hell, the 3 I had with Dawg were 3 of my favorites of the past few years. It's quality of the company, not that of the beverage.
That said, if the beer were Celis White or any Budweiser variety, I would bring my own and deliver to anyone who asked for one of mine a punch directly to the gut and/or kidney.

I'm thinking Brickskellar...
I must drink beer. Beer is the mind killer....

Is that the place with hundreds of kinds of beer? I might have to bring my husband. He probably wouldn't care if I went to an Achewood-themed orgy without him, but the possibility of that many kinds of beer is another story.

Yes, that's the place. (http://www.thebrickskeller.com/)

If it weren't so damned far away from public transportation I'd say Old Dominion. I don't like beer but they have a dandy root beer on draught.

In in north Arlington (right by Ft. Meyer) but I lived in Ashburn about 2 miles from the Old Dominion brewery for almost 15 years so it was a frequent spot for family dinners.

Sweet zombie jesus! I mean, damn. I only spend about $1.70/month for hosting and get free image scaling. So I'd think a semi-famous business could swing it. That's just . . . big.

What if we had simultaneous mini-cons in several cities? We could have on in DC, another for los Californianos, and maybe one in the deep south (perhaps Tejas, since Paul is all about some Achehead Con). We could arrange for one person in each group to call someone else in another group, and pass the ol' cell phone around a bit. When it's all done, we'd have some cool photos to post and we'd at least get to meet some of the people in our region.
Other thoughts?

Time zones may pose a difficulty. Plus, isn't one of us from bumfuck Alaska? Will that person party by themselves?

When you're in a place called "bumfuck" then every day is a party. They don't need our help.

Simultaneous cons is a great idea. I'm sure we could work around the time zone problem.

That could work. In addition to the telephone pass around each party could have at least one lap top for posting during the party.
Also, there are at least 4 from the board here in the Houston area. How come we have never gotten together? Dammit we have a zoo and everything. No steam tunnels though.

Once you're done waiting in some of the worst traffic in the US and frolicking in the runoff from the petrochemical industry, come on over and rinse off in the beautiful, clean Pacific ocean.
I do like Texas, though - Houston would not be my first choice (that would be Austin) for places to live, but if I had to move and Tx was an option, I would go.

Hi all,
Quick update - I'm all moved in and nearly unpacked (and we only moved two days ago)! It's all very awesome. A friendly man came and hooked my home pc up to the net today, so here I am, and posting from home for the first time ever!
I don't have time to add much explaination right now but I just got a major, major, major promotion where I work which happens to be the largest Children's Theatre in Canada, 2nd largest in North America. (And I still get the whole summer off!) We've got a beautiful theatre that is totally reconfigurable to any shape, as well as several great rehearsal halls etc. I can get free space whenever I want and a cut rate on technicians, production crew etc., and have access to lots of top-o-the-line equipment.
Here's the theatre: http://www.mtyp.ca - but don't be alarmed, we've had several non-child related things happen there.
Anyone wanna consider Winnipeg - central to Canada and highly accessable to the Northern States? We could look at doing something major or really small, or anywhere in between! I'll be in heavy rehearsal from Sept - Oct with the next show I'm directing, so the date might need to be in November or later...
I gotta' get back to work now, but will check back later today and actually read the whole damn thread.
Everything's comin' up side_show!
-
Congrats, side_show! May life continue to be rad.
-
I might try and get round to writing an Achewood related song for kicksif y'all do have a con or cons. Otherwise I'm likely to be asleep or at work... Talkabout yer time differences!

Location is the Brickskellar.

Yes, Bobby, every day is a party when you are me.
Anyway...Sadly, CJ, living in a place called "bumfuck" isn't as fun as you would think. And yep, I'm on a godforsaken rock in the middle of the Bering Sea. So unless I can scare up about $1,800 (USD) for airfare, I'm not going anywhere. Plus I have to figure out when I could possibly take leave. We are a surprisingly busy place for being so isolated.

The map I got from clicking didn't even show Alaska.
Elbonia looks to be about halfway between the Alaskan Mainland and the end of the Aleutian Chain. It also looks like she could fly almost due south and find Hawaii in about the same distance she could fly due East and find BC.
She's about as far out in the middle of nowhere as I am, the difference being a hell of a lot more people want to come to Hawaii than Unalaksa.
That would be Bumfuck for sure....and even more so on Christmas, when I'm on the beach.

i did not realize how the google map "create map" link worked. it links to a "normal" google map rather than a static "snap shot" of a map.
at 1024X768 in a full size window of firefox, the map shows a "smidgeon" of the southern tip of alaska and a "smidgeon" of the north edge of california, thus centerring upon the length of oregon, washington, and half of British Columbia. this disregards the lack of population density north of sacramento.

I was just at the Brickskeller last night, oddly enough. I enjoyed an Anderson Valley ESB, an Otter Creek Copper Ale, and a Bitburger. I did NOT enjoy their chicken wings, which are battered and fried and have the sauce on the side. That is FUCKED up.

I have been known to take out six Lindemann's Framboise and cheese fries BECAUSE I AM GIRLY.
OK PEOPLE SO WHEN ARE WE GONNA DO THIS.

I'm in Delaware at the moment trying to have a vacation (but mostly obsessively checking the weather map on the internet) but I would be up for any other weekend, as long as CJ and my husband come to protect me from Bobby.

BRING THEM. The more the merrier.
As for Deleware, fuck it. I was at Cape Henlopen this last weekend for a wedding (which was great), and got some beach time in (which was great), except for the innumerable hossflies attacking me (which was not so great).

My wife is having a baby the week of July 25th, so I may be tied up for a while.

Back in my day, people used to go out drinking WHILE giving birth! To celebrate the fact that they could drink again!

Yep. The worst part about it is that our runway is tiny. There is no way that I can fly anywhere else other than Anchorage. Even if I wanted to go to another island in the Aleutian chain, I would probably have to fly to Anchorage first (our hub city) and then get another flight out. Our runway can hardly accommodate a 737, and the terrain here is too dicey for an instrument approach. So the jets almost never make it in, but the little 30-passenger turboprop airplanes do pretty well. Of course, the fuel mileage on those things means that the 800-air-mile trip to Anchorage is as good as it gets. There has been some demand for flights from Elbonia (the name of the port that is part of Elbonia) straight to Seattle, but unless we got a magically lengthened runway it ain't gonna happen.
So, yeah. I live on one of the most beautiful places on earth, which happens to be on a rock in the middle of the Bering Sea. I will have to post some pictures of the Aleutian summertime -- it's stunningly beautiful here. It looks like Ireland or Scotland, it's so green and lush. Of course, we only have about six trees because of the insanely high winds here.
Tangent! I'm glad that you all came along with me on that one.

From Wikipedia:
Elbonia has a large non-Italian community known for their antipasto.
Go figure. Well, you know what they say: When in Nome...
