Title: An exploratory one with a little difference...
Post by: slink on August 24, 2003, 12:18:41 am
OK, seeing as how the 'what are your favourite' topics are too difficult to decide on (for me at least), I wanna try a different approach. I'm wondering if it will change the outcome much, and whether it will introduce me to some more stuff that I don't know of already but is worth having for my DJing:
So...

What did you listen to today?

Me:
Tom Waits - Mule Variations
Jeff Buckley - Grace
Tim Buckley - Dream Letter Live in London 1968
Chris Cornell - Euphoria Morning
Masters of Reality - How High the Moon
Sublime - Sublime
Queens of the Stone Age - similairly eponymous
Giovanni Battista Purgolesi - Stabat Matar

It was quite an eclectic day!

Foo Fighters - "There is Nothing Left to Lose" and "One by One"
The Cult - "Love"

This is unusual for me, but I spent a lot of time at the gym today, so I was listening to whatever insipid drivel they play on this station that considers itself edgy.

Um, well, this hasn't been a typical day, but so far:

Cake - Fashion Nugget
They Might Be Giants - Then: The Earlier Years (disk 1)
Luna - Bewitched
and some mp3's from Swell, Brassy, and Mojave 3 (can't remember which tracks right now)

Edit:  Because I can.  The rest of the day included

Badly Drawn Boy - The Hour of Bewilderbeast
The Stone Roses - The Stone Roses
White Stripes - White Blood Cells
China Crisis - China Crisis Collection

I've spent most of today listening to R.E.M.'s "Life's Rich Pageant." Honorable mention goes to my MP3 of "Dance Commander" by the Electric Six, which has also seen heavy duty today.

I picked up an MP3-CD player today and burned a bunch of songs to listen to on it. 168 songs on a single disc! ROCK!

The playlist included selections from the following artists:
50 Cent
Eminem
Norah Jones
Phantom Planet
The Donnas
Little River Band
Pearl Jam
System of a Down
Kid Rock & Sheryl Crow
Napy Roots
The White Stripes
...and many more.

All for only three payments of $29.99 - direct from K-Tel!

John Glenn's Autobiography and a little bit of "A Prarie Home Companion".  About two minutes worth of "This American Life".

Excellent. I'll have to take a look at the people I don't know.
Those that I know that I give kudos for: Cake & TMBG, System...
And Prairie Home Companion - haven't listened to that in yeaaaaaaars!

I'm having to live without my mp3cd player for a while now, it was my car stereo, and my car just died, so I have to wait til I get a new one to put it in. I think I have a portable one but it sucks so bad!

Well, I'm off to check up on those bands that I don't knwo about that you've all posted so far.

Oh, I forgot about the NPR I listened to yesterday: The last of "Car Talk" (staff plastic surgeon: Faye Swift.) and "Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me" - a current events game show that rocks.

Slink: Also look up The Postal Service - fantastic caleco-rock sound.

Today's listenings, thus far, consists of an hour of the local "variety"/pop-and-light-rock station, including several guilty-pleasure songs. ("Oh, geez, 'Two Princes' is on? again? ... doo doo, princes who adore you, doo dee doo...") Now that I'm back in vicinity of a CD player, I'm putting on New Adventures in Hi-Fi, which is somewhere neck and neck with Life's Rich Pageant in my mental Best R.E.M. Album Ever contest.

More news later.

Asherdan, you have some eclectic tastes. Today I got to listen to G'n'R and Pink Floyd, courtesy of some folks who live in my apartment complex. Not in my building, you understand - in a building some distance away. I liked it better a couple of weeks ago, when they were playing the Gap Band. At the gym, they were playing the classic rock station - I ask you, can anyone work out to the Allman Brothers?

There's nothing worse than really bad second-hand music. Last year I lived next to a young woman who was far, far overinfatuated with R. Kelly's "Ignition," to the point that a song that would have merely been quite awful normally had become totally intolerable within two months. Gah.

I just don't get how people's music can be *so loud* that it can be heard from a great distance away; sheesh.  do they leave all their windows open and turn it up to the loudest decibal?  hmm.  over here, at least people are decent in that respect; the worst I hear is on the weekend maybe a car with too much bass will drive by from the main road.

---

Today I listened to some old music/some new music:

Anna Oxygen - All Your Faded Things
The Dismemberment Plan - Emergency & I
Hood - Cold House
The Notwist - Neon Golden
Manic Street Preachers - This Is My Truth Tell Me Yours
Sad Like Crazy - love songs to death

and a few mix cds I found in my collection that people gave me or I made myself long ago: one contains songs by The Sugarcubes, The Anniversary, The Smiths and Tram (I just listened to those on repeat), the other has some Weezer, Bjork, etcetc. and my *absolute perfect* mix I made a copy of after making it for a friend; it contains Saint Etienne, The Sea and Cake, Hood, Low, Knife in the Water, Red House Painters, etcetc.  it's also really frikkin' sad.  I'm glad before I began to get teary eyed, a show I had been waiting on started, so I turned it off.

Now I'm about to stick in a synthpop mix another friend gave me awhile back.

Yea I do the same. Partly because I have to have them all as mp3's to mix with, but mostly because my PC is the only thing hooked up to my amp!

What a weird mix. I've been painting all day, maybe it's the vapors.

I do the same, every time I paint I listen to a whole collection of weird things! Last time I think it was PJ Harvey, the Hitchhikers Guide radio series, Cake and erm, TMBG - Flood and eponymous & Prodigy - Jilted.

Will do. I know the name, but haven't heard them yet. I'll go do that now!

I can be so guilty of that. I mean, when I drive I like to listen to music really loud. I try not to annoy people, and I don't think I do, but I am just such an audiophile that I hate hearing the car over the music. Fortunately I live in the country, so when at home I can listen to music as loud as I like, also a benefit for jamming with my 100watt marshall. Particularly when mixing it has to be very loud.
I'm terrible I really am!!

Post by: Nabubrush on August 26, 2003, 06:37:50 am
You know, I listen to music fairly loud in my car too, but I've noticed that it's really not that loud outside it. I mean, the bass is pretty clear, but to get to the really annoying levels, it has to be so loud as to be extremely distorted inside the vehicle. I postulate that the people who listen to music that loud really can't enjoy it. These people who rock out in my complex - they can't possibly be listening to this music inside the apartment.
Title: An exploratory one with a little difference...
Post by: starlight on August 26, 2003, 10:24:52 am
Yeah, that's what I'm sayin' - it has to be seriously loud to hear it from a distance ...if I turn my music up in this room to the point where it makes my head hurt then go in another room, it is barely heard.  I'd have to turn it up to almost head exploding levels (which is I guess as loud as it can possibly go) for it to even be heard at normal level in another room (perhaps this room is slightly sound proof ..hmm).

My dad used to be (not now cause I don't live with him) heard coming down the street in his car with the bass on, but see, he's partially deaf - maybe all people who listen to music that loudly have the same ailment ...and if not, they sure will get there later in life :D

---

Anyway, to keep this thread slightly on-topic, what I listened to today:
Knife in the Water - Cut the Cord
Stereolab - Miss Modular (single)
Kathryn Williams - Old Low Light

I just got those cds in the mail is why ..I just listened to 'em on repeat all day; nothing else.  not one mp3 - I think I may have listened to some mp3s on my playlist yesterday and just didn't list them since I didn't remember.

Super Furry Animals - Phantom Power
Mars Volta - Deloused In The Comatorium
Bob Marley and the Wailers - Babylone By Bus
The Coral - Magic Medicine
Magnetic Fields - 69 Love Songs (disc 2)

The day I first read this (Sunday?) I listened, in this order, to:

Red Ellis (http://arnet.pair.com/RedEllis/)’s afternoon gospel program.
Flaming Lips “She Don’t Use Jelly (http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&uid=CASS70308152134&sql=A7kdjvwmla9tk)” single
Kraftwerk Tour de France Soundtracks (http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&uid=CASS70308152134&sql=Aprn8b5n4zsqh)
Can Sacrilege (http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&uid=CASS70308152134&sql=Avdqvad5ky8wo) disc one
The Beatles Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band
Moby Ambient (http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&uid=CASS70308152134&sql=A995j8qcnbtx4)
Can Future Days (http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&uid=CASS70308152134&sql=Abx65mpb39f6o)
Drive-by Truckers Decoration Day (http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&uid=CASS70308152134&sql=Aqk98s31wa3mg)

This was from about 3pm to 11pm. I meant to listen to the two Can albums consecutively, but I couldn’t find Future Days for a while.

Just noticed this and I would like to point out that this girl that my ex and I were great friends with in college is now married to the shorter, dark-haired guy from this band. I think his name is Russell.

Also, today I listened to Trail of Dead, the new Jane's Addiction, Foo Fighters, and John Lee Hooker.

Yea, I'm still trying to decide what I feel about the new Jane's album. I am now pretty sure I like it, but in what way!?
I think it's because it really is like what they'd be like if they hadn't split but continued being good, so it kinda means evolving quickly with them. It is a rather unique album and all.
But still, I probably just need to listen to it more!

I think it's pretty good. I like all their other stuff better, but that's to be expected seeing as how they haven't been together for so long. I can't imagine what they would have done had they stayed together. Still, I think the reviews were pretty severe - it's like everyone expected "Nothing's Shocking II" or something. There are some low points on it, but on the whole it bodes pretty well for the future if this isn't a one-time thing.

Today I listened to Royal Trux's untitled 3rd album and the one after it , Cats and Dogs. It was all especially great because I got a badly needed new muffler and could listen to music in the car properly for the first time in weeks.

I also thought about The Hafler Trio for a little bit, but I'm not sure if that counts, either as music or as listening to it.

I just had to drive home without music. I mean I didn't, but with a dead Carb I was trying to get it back so I can sell bits of it while I get a new one, and I thought my garage would have taken the stereo out, so I didn't take the fascia. In the end I had to do it myself just now. Lazy bastards!

-----Story Time-----
Two months ago, I walked out the front door to get into my car and discovered that someone had attempted to steal my car stereo. This individual was apparently neither technologically nor mentally equipped to do so, and instead only succeeded in tearing the console out of my dash. There was a bike in the yard and my CD case was missing. The theory goes that some punk-ass kid tried to boost my stereo, got spooked when my neighbor came outside at 4 AM to go to work, and ran off with my CD case. This CD case contained just about every CD I own -- including my Zeppelin 4-disk boxed set. Stupid, stupid, stupid. (We had recently taken a long car trip so I had a lot of music for the road, and never bothered to take it inside.) Spouse had converted much of our collection to mp3, but since he's not really a Zep fan he'd never bothered with the boxed set. So I burned a couple of mix disks to keep in my car and resolved to buy a new set sometime...before I die.

Two weeks ago, a mysterious box came via UPS. Spouse ran to the door, signed for the package, raced to his home office, and slammed the door. So I figured, "Must be porn" and let it go. He came out a minute later with a sheepish grin and a label-less box.

"I didn't want you to know where it came from before you opened it."

Wielding my trusty razor blade, I sliced into the cardboard eagerly, lifted the crumpled newspaper, and -- lo and behold -- uncovered a familiar looking image of crop circles. Tears filled my eyes -- I literally wept with joy -- I was overwhelmed. Spouse had spent more than a month bidding for used copies on EBay to replace my stolen set. In addition, he'd purchased the two-disk follow-up set (which will arrive in the mail this week sometime.) And -- here's the kicker -- when I opened the lid to reveal the precious silver discs -- the box smelled like weed. It was so...perfect.

And that's what I'm listening to this week.

(what I was trying to say originally)
He's a keeper!
Enjoyed the tale. Good stuff (not the beginning - though good in terms of... oh you know what I mean). Sounds like a boxed set I could do with at some point, specially if it comes with free weed!!!

In my first apartment I lived on the top floor of a house above a very glamourous transvestite named George/Georgina and her partner.  This at first seemed very exciting - who else can say they lived above Diana Ross?  Then it all began. They partied all night listening to CCR over and over so loud that you could see things shaking on my shelves while Georegina's partner drunkenly threatened to stab her and their friends laughed.  I loved my apartment and it was very close to my University, but they partied at least 4 times a week, usually til about 9am with that same disk on constant repeat.  I eventually had to move away.

I can't listen to do, do, do, "Lookin' out my back door" without being filled with rage.

As for what I listened to today, our stereo is broken.

I can't picture a transvestite listening to CCR. Thinking about that is making my head hurt.

I used to live across the hall from this Indian (Asian type) gay guy who I think must have had a boyfriend who worked second shift. At about 1 or 2 am Barbara Streisand at full blast would come to drown out  were noises that would have been (marginally) harder to deal with. Moaning or grunting or God knows what...

I used to go hit his door with a hammer it was so loud and he still didn't hear it or was too busy to answer the door.

Feh. I had almost forgotten about that.

Transvestites listening to CCR doesn't compute.

I've been listening to a lot of different stuff lately.  A friend at work asked to borrow some Stones (I'm the resident music guru) so I dug that shit out.  I was on a Stones binge for about two days when he returned them this week.  Another guy requested Frank Zappa so same thing there (Titties and Beer).  Other stuff seen in my changer recently, The Roots, Radiohead, Todd Rundgren, Tangerine Dream, Stevie Wonder, High Fidelity Soundtrack, The Kinks BBC recordings, B. B. King live at the Royal Theater (awesome), Dixie Chicks, Weird Al...  At this very moment:  True Love Waits, Christopher O'Riley plays Radiohead.  Radiohead songs arranged for classical piano.  Pretty killer actually.

Auggh - for some reason I despise CCR. Just can't stand them, probably because all "classic" stations overplay the shit out of 'em. Anyway, today I listened to Weezer "Pinkerton" (damn weak-willed brain), this Roman Candles CD that I talked about in the other thread, Foo Fighters, Misfits, NoFX, and also Everclear - the last live. They played the state fair here, because Art Alexakis' wife is from here. They implied that they might be breaking up or something. Also, the last song was a cover of Cheap Trick's "Surrender" - sort of as a joke because Cheap Trick was supposed to play a week ago and thought that they could do a gig deep in the heart of Canada, then drive here to AK to play the next night, and then drive to a date the night after that. Good Christ, buy an atlas. Anyway, the sound was kind of weak but it wasn't a terrible show.

I've only heard of about half of those.  The Smiths of course is an old favourite.  I actually brought a photo of Morrissey with me the last time I had my hair done (I have a shortish pomp now, much like Moz does in this picture (http://jough.com/jough/moz3.jpg) (except I have a better hairline).

And of course Sonic Youth goes back to my youth.  I have that Wilco album but it has never spoken to me.

And what Belle & Sebastian songs?  If You're Feeling Sinister? Get Me Away From Here I'm Dying?  The Boy with the Arab Strap?

MILES DAVIS

Niiiiiice!
Can't go wrong there. I always tend to go from Miles Davis, through some Thelonius Monk, through Tom Waits, and onto Herbie Hancock. Maybe with a little Modern Jazz Quartet thrown in. Then if I feel like taking it on, I'll go to Cinematic Orchestra and maybe some Gotan Project.

Goood! This is all just me trying to find as much new music as I can, so the more people who drop in, and the more often people keep posting a little what they've listened to list the happier I become!

Okay, I listened to mp3's earlier today, but hell if I can remember everything except that a couple of the achewood songs from songfight were in there and I think Carissa's Wierd - You Should Be At Home Here, The Dismemberment Plan - Following Through, Timeout Drawer (forgot the name of the song, but I only have one), etcetc (background noise soon after that).

THEN, I got my big haul of cds I ordered last week - I've listened to almost all of them, but I'm seriously doubting I can stay up much longer.  one should not buy 8 cds at once (listed in the order I listened to them):
Lucinda Williams - Car Wheels On a Gravel Road
Guided By Voices - Earthquake Glue
Trembling Blue Stars - A Certain Evening Light
The American Analog Set - The Fun of Watching Fireworks
Fog - Ether Teeth
Stereolab - Mars Audiac Quintet
Fog - s/t

I have one left, but I doubt I'll get to it tonight: Yo La Tengo - I Can Hear The Heart Beating as One

...I'm sort've a music geek as well ya could say if that wasn't already evident :)

8 cds at once is never enough! I like to get about 20 and be able to sit down, check them all out through a day and then maybe do a mix with the new stuff in, see how it fits with all the stuff I already had.

I keep meaning to check out Yo La Tengo. Amazon was recommending it to me for something I bought from them. I think it was from searching through all the Desert stuff like Desert Sessions and Mark Lanegan et al.

Dr. Octagon - Dr. Octagynecologist
Squarepusher - Do You Know Squarepusher? (The song)
Squarepusher - Go Plastic (the album)
Super Furry Animals - Rings Around The World
Placebo - Without You I Am Nothing
Mercury Rev - All Is Dream
Flaming Lips - Fight Test EP
The Shins - Oh, Inverted World
Ween - 12 Golden Country Greats (What is up with this?  wtf it is country lolz)
death cab for cutie - transatlanticism

and for balance, a CD of miscellaneous Billie Holiday.

Most intelligent folks have a streak of music geek

Well, in an idealistic world, perhaps I would buy 20 at once (I certainly have a long enough wishlist ..heh).  I also like to make mixes after I buy new music, but mostly to share with others than for myself (I only make mixes for myself out of mp3s I don't want to buy the album for and those I cannot buy at all -live, demo, only on vinyl, etc) - sadly, not since like four buying sprees ago, has someone asked for one.

YLT is nice.  not a must have sort've group since sadly I don't particularly like to sing along to it which is how I judge things (excluding instrumentals), but the two albums I have are pleasant as reading music.

Bitches Brew for one.  At Newport 1958 for another.  And The Essential Miles Davis.  All purchased this past Wednesday.  The last one is a career retrospective that covers 41 years or music.

These were all purchased based on the awesomeness of Kind of Blue which I discovered last year and finally decided I had to hear more.

A few comments.  Bitches Brew is off the chain.  It's hard to comprehend it's so frentic and compelling I predict i'll be listening to this the rest of my life.  Newport 1958 is on fire.  It's the same group that recorded Kind of Blue and they ain't holding back nothing here.  The retrospective prooves that Miles was killer from day one until the day he died.  Oh yeah, Coltraine is  massive as well.

Give it another try.  That one took a while to sink in.  It kind of snuck up on me and sucker punched me.  Maybe it was just the mood I was in at the time.  It's pretty dark actually.  After I got into it, it spent about two months in heavy rotation sharing time in my changer with Sea Change and Bryter Layter.

I like dark.  Heck, it's about all I ever listen to.  Well, dark or *sad*, like the Smiths and early Blur we had kicking tonight.

But the Wilco album (a gift) just sounded like generock to me - just generic pop-rock music like Hootie and the Blowjobs.

Okay, that's overstating it.  I guess I'll have to give it a second spin, before I sell it to SecondSpin.com.

Really, what made me like that Wilco album was hearing the song Reservations first before I bought the thing.  the rest took awhile to like; maybe I wouldn't have bought it right off if not for that song :D

Last time I realllly listened to it was more than a year ago though; when my relatives left, I put it in the discman and cried in a corner; damn, that sounds rather emo.

That has to be the most eclectic playlist ever.  How is it that this does not cause you to implode?

Nice to finally see someone here listening to PJ Harvey and QOTSA. You oughta, if you aren't already, look out for her guesting on the upcoming Desert Sessions (9&10).

sjlimmer - you have had me listening to my copy of - and this is a ska explosion - the classic, recorded in a shed in kingstown ska compilation. Good stuff!

And thanks to Choop I need to dig out my Orbital albums since losing the mp3s thanks to the great hard drive crash of 2003. (not as bad as the great crash of 2002 was mind!)
They are one of the very few electronic bands I listen to.

Conway Twitty
The Dust Brothers

Madonna
Lyle Lovett
Louis Armstrong and his Hot Five
Alabama
The Little River Band
Go-gos
P.I.L.
Jay-Z
Meshell N'Dege-Ocello (sp?)

I was just introduced to their "69 Love Songs" last week and have been listening to them pretty much non-stop all week.

Actually, I've mostly been singing two of the songs: "I Think I Need a New Heart" and "The Luckiest Guy On The Lower East Side."

Stephin Merritt is like Morrissey meets Leonard Cohen.   Good stuff.

Well, today, what with my being up scarily early, and then dealing with job applications and the like was a little eclectic to say the least!

HitchHiker's Guide radio series (Fit the Tenth through Twelfth)
Shpongle - Tales of the Inexpressable
Mystery of the Yeti - Under Mount Kailash and The Herb Garden
Jane's Addiction - Strays
Kyuss - Welcome to Sky Valley
Tom Waits - Bone Machine
Gotan Project - La Ravancho Del Tango
Bob Schneider - Lonelyland
Bad Religion - The Process of Belief
Three Dead Trolls - a little bit of variousness
Nine Inch Nails - And All That Could Have Been / Still / Further Down the Spiral (needed a migraine cure)

I'll probably move onto either System of a Down or Tweaker next.

Smiths -- There is A Light that Never Goes Out
Sonic Youth -- Skip Tracer (possibly my favourite song ever)
Badly Drawn Boy -- Walking Out of Stride
Ben Harper -- Not Fire, Not Ice

Also, I've never heard M. Doughty's solo stuff. What's it like?

The internet.  E-mail me and I'll send you a copy.

Doughty's solo stuff isn't so great, but he did this set at KCRW where he did half his solo stuff and half Soul Coughing stuff, and his Janine was really killer.  Plus, I used to play that song for a girl whose name was Janine.  She thought I wrote it.  I never bothered to correct her.
