Title: Earworms
Post by: AlohaDawg on September 08, 2005, 06:35:56 pm
Ever get a song stuck in your head? What song gets stuck in your head?

Today I've been stuck with an endless loop of "Girl from Ipanema" and "Do you Know the Way to San Jose".

Recently I've been plagued by "Tommy Gunn Theme" and the "Pink Panther Theme".

My head is perpetually trapped in a pre-1980 elevator.

So what are the absolute worst songs you can get stuck in your head?

Another One Bites the Dust. Ever since that freaking (but clever) Aiwa stereo commercial.

Seven Nation Army.

We had joy
We had fun
We had seasons
In the Sun.

That or:

Biiiilly, don't be a heeeero
don't be a fool with your life!
Biiiily, don't be a heeeero
come back and make me a wife!

You're all pretty clearly missing the WORST EARWORM OF ALL TIME:

My Sharona - The Knack

It's not even the whole song, it's just the instrumental part, mostly.  When I get it stuck in my head there are rarely lyrics, it's just the same 20 notes or so OVER AND OVER.

Having said that, I'm sorry that I made you all think of this song, because now it will be stuck in your heads.

This is the song that never ends
It goes on and on my friends
Some people started singing it
Not knowing what it was
And to this day they're singing it because
Because
Because

[Repeat from the top]

Indian Guides campout is in 6 weeks and I'm just waiting to teach it to the new kids around the campfire so a new generation can be infected. If y'all don't hear from me after mid-October send the corpse dogs through Yucaipa.

You already taught them

Blaaaaaack Soooooocks
They never get dirty
The longer I wear them
The blacker they get

I thiiiiink that maybe
I'll wash them
But something keeps saying
not yet Not Yet NOT YET ?

for the past serveral months, i've been singing the hamburger helper song to a incredibly similar but incorrect tune that i can't quite place.

hamburger helper.

helps your hamburger

helper,

make a great meal.

i just tried googling for the lyrics, and couldn't find them quickly,
so i gave up.

i did find a reference to them in a thread somewhere of horrible haikus, and my guess (since i ordinarily/normally) is that i got them wrong.

prolly:
hamburger helper, helped her hamburger make a great meal.

So,
i have a commercial stuck in my head.

i'm singing incorrect jingle lyrics
to the wrong tune.

wheeeeee.

it's been months.

i believe it may be my mantra.

mexican radio is a good one to have stuck in my head, though,
as opposed to a lot of the alternatives.

i hate when i get boy band songs stuck in my head,
since i don't listen to them often.

I think it's:

Hamburger Helper
Helps your hamburger
Help her make a great meal.

Oh, lord, earworming to the wrong tune. Since my early childhood, I have had a recurring misconception that the Marines song ("From the halls of Montezuma to the shores of Tripoli...") actually goes to the tune of the Battle Hymn of the Republic, and despite having been reeducated several times, every time that particular song occurs to me, it goes straight into the Battle Hymn tune. (It works too well!)

On the subject of jingle-oids, may I nominate the theme song to "The Nanny?" ("... What was she to do? Where was she to go? She was out on her fan-ny...")

Horrible, horrible Spice Girls: "I tell ya' what I want, what I really really want/so tell me what you want, what you really really?/ I tell ya' what I want, what I really, really want,/So tell me what'cha want, what ya' really, really want/  I wanna huh, I wanna huh, what I really really want is a ziga-zig-ah!"

Not so bad, and fun to sing with others today I had "Lets call the whole thing off" stuck in my head.

Also the deeply annoying "Max Five" chocolate bar comercial often gets stuck in my head.  I hate that bloody comercial so much.  The lyrics are so assinine.

The theme from Sanford and Son.  My labmates were getting ready to kill me over that one (well, my tuneless humming and whistling of it) a while back.  And it drives my gf nuts....

Doesn't bother me that much though.

When I was a kid my dad used to sing the melodies of "Yankee Doodle Dandy" and "I've Been Working On The Railroad" with their lyrics being completely interchangeable.  They work both ways.

Caramel is sweet,
And peanutbutter's funny,
Pretzels are (just salty?)
And peanuts are just nutty.

Wrap it up in chocolate,
It's salty and it's sweet,
It all comes together to
knock you off your feet!

Max Five!
One more than four!
Max Five!
Go all the way to
Max Five!
'Cause more is more,
Max Five.

Oooh peanuts are nutty!  I never knew that.  Brilliant.  Oh, and five is one more than four.  Thanks for clearing that up for me.

fuck*ng comercial.

It was on just after my last post and the stupid jingle is again stuck in my head.

I swear that with the above listed ingredients that they must have made a candy bar out of the random floor sweepings from the other food products they manufacture, and they're trying really damn hard to sell it, since the costs are so much lower for floor sweepings, and "hell the shit's just lying on the floor anyway, so why not sell it?"  I never want to eat this candy bar.  Max Five is floor sweepings, people!

I often have the tune of "Do you know the way to San Jose" in my head, but unfortunately it's the version from the eBay commercials with that weird lady (her eyebrows go vertical!).  It hurts my brain.

The other song living in my head is "Life is an open road," by either Jon Bon Jovi or Bryan Adams (is there a difference?) and used to promote Sportscenter's 50 states in 50 days event thingy.  All I have heard is one verse and what seems to be about 10 seconds of the bridge, so that's all I get to repeat in my head.

"Seasons in the Sun" is a common occurance as well, but since I don't own it in any form and haven't heard it in its entirety ever, all I get is the chorus, which then leads directly into "It's magic," because that's what came next in the damn commercial.  So maybe 10 seconds in total.

You gotta eat. Tell me who do you think you are. You won't get far unless you eat.

Where the hell are these restaurants hiding? Do they even exist? What kind of messed up advertising campaign wastes money in markets where your product is not available?

I had a Chemistry professor last semester with two very young children. Sing-a-longs were a fairly common occurrence in this course, and the biggest subject of it was the "Hot Potato" song from "The Wiggles." Now I understand why; he was desperately hoping to transfer that motherfucker. Hot potato, indeed.

You had sing alongs in your Chemisty class?  Please provide details as to how this went down.  Were his kids there with him, and you had to pacify them by singing, or did your Prof make all his students sing songs about class topics, or something?  I'm facinated.

*ahem* Prepare for thread derailment:

The class was Intro to Orgo, and as such was filled with frosh and sophomores, most of whom were very nervous about it and uncomfortable taking a class that has a (well-earned) reputation for difficulty. Because of this, the prof did everything in his power to make it a fun course. The major mechanism of this was what he called "30-Second Fun Breaks," where midway through class, we would stop, do something totally non-sequiturish, and then get back to lecture. It really did help to break the tension.

The prof was sort of music-y, so a frequent topic for these breaks was a song of some sort or another. This resulted in the class learning a number of fascinating musical things, ranging from "Hot Potato" to Duran Duran ("so there was this song when I was in high school with the worst lyrics ever..."). At one point we were even taught, as a class, the Gabba Gabba Hey!. It was pretty rad.

Children's songs in general seem to make good (bad?) earworms.  There are songs I remember in their entirety from twenty years ago that occasionally stick in my brain, and yet I can't remember my current phone number without serious effort.

I'm not sure which is more disappointing to me: the fact that I remember the tune to the "sixes" times table record we listened to in second grade, 22 years ago, or the fact that it still springs to mind unbidden when I'm doing math in my head, like the alphabet song.

I like digital underground...

I did have "Groove is in the Heart" stuck in my head for awhile, and coupled with visualizing the video (basically big heads of the weird girl the indian-looking dude and Bootsy Collins or the girl doing a sort of epileptic dance while repeating the same phrase over and over) makes me ponder suicide.

Which brings me to the next logical concept: EYEWORMS

Visuals that get stuck in your head, often in conjunction with music.

FINE YOUNG CANNIBALS video for "she drives me crazy" with the tall skinny guy in the yellow suit playing leapfrog. STUPID and stuck in my head.

That and the dwarf from the "Safety Dance" (I think) video. THe chick in the overalls from the 'Come On Eileen' video comes in third.

NOW YOU ALL KNOW HOW OLD I WAS WHEN I WATCHED TOO MUCH CABLE.

It's not such a problem now that only about 5% of MTV programming actually is music videos.

I still want to make out with Martha Quinn though.

WHY??!!

The 'Why' is really more for the dwarf, overalls chick, and lanky yellow beanpole. And the disembodied arms and legs playing drums in that stupid "Wild Wild West" video.

Eyeworms!  Instantaneous, detailed mental images popped into my head at the mention of the 'Safety Dance' and Fine Young Cannibals videos (and now we all know how old I was too).  How rather awful that parts of my brain are being used to store these things, instead of, say, Japanese vocabulary, or the names of half the people at work.

But, Martha Quinn?  I will never understand men.

She was cute. She looked accessible, like the cute girl that works two cubes away or lives two doors down. Not like Kennedy who I thought was a dude, or downtown Julie Brown (or the white Julie Brown) who were just too far out there.
