Love the details of this strip, Rod recognising Pat after a single sentence and the melon mushing punishment.
Also, I hate Bono so this all...works.

Although Sunday, Bloody Sunday is quite good now that I think of it but i'll attribute that to Mr Edge and his singular guitar technique rather than, you know...that Bono person.

Last panel facial expression is great.

I usually don't second guess a first poster's choice of topic title, but, with a fair amount of good material to choose from, you could have at least picked something from strip.  But yeah, screw Bono.

Please don't let this turn into a U2-bashing thread. I mean, I'm not big fans of them, but it gets so tiresome having to hear everyone talk about how much they hate U2. You pretty much represent the vocal majority by now, guys.

This was a funny strip, though. I really like the panel devoted entirely to pointing out the tiresome morning-DJ sound effects, and the concept of comedy head smashing.

This is weird, am I to take from this that Pat respects Bono as a political activist? I mean yeah he liked moby, but at least he still has a vague hippy cred.
I figured Pat would have totally hated Bono.
For the record I am at peace with U2, and would quite happily accept Bono as a benevolent (if somewhat smug) dictator. Not like I own any cds or anything.

Good point, although I would say we probably represent the vocal minority.  The band is enormously popular.  Besides, my beef is mainly with Bono.  They've had some great songs.

Is the f-bomb actually "Fouc*ult"?
Title: Important: Contains your embroidered G8 ballcap - 26/10/05

Yes I believe the F-bomb is indeed Fouc*ult.  Anyway, look at friggin jarred Pat is in that last panel.  That's some serious dementia shizzle happening there.  I mean we're going waaay beyond Pat staying off the beach.

Considering this (http://www.bongonews.com/StoryImages/bono_vp.jpg) Bono may not exactly be against head smashing so much.

I also love how Pat uses the radio DJ's full moniker "Rod in the Morning" and that this guy gets over on Pat real easylike.  See, anyone else trying to yank his crank with the Bono and F-bomb talk would be a potential target for some serious Pattage.  (Hell, even presumed crank-yankage would be in a dire situation.)  But not Rod in the Morning, no siree, he is the vox populi for assholes in Pat's world apparently.

So... yeah.. I enjoyed this one, cats are funny.

The entire panel dedicated to a terrible sound effect is good; the rant is, if anything, a little too reasoned for Pat, but I can believe he just isn't in Really Dicktacular Phase at the moment. Overall, good strip.

I freaking hate the term "f-bomb." How can people even say this and not realize how stupid they sound?

Where I grew up (I grew up in Utah), any forbidden word - i.e., nearly all of them - could be referred to this way, replacing "f" with the initial of the word in question.  For some kids, from particularly conservative families, the "h-bomb" was "heck."

"F-bomb" is great, though, when the "F" means "Fouc*ult."  (Cf. the "D-Bomb" for "Derrida" and the "M.M.-Bomb" for "Michael Moore.")

Heh, it gets used around my place in an ironic way on a very consistent level, but it could mean any f-word really.

Why actually just this week it was used in conjunction with "fart", "fine", "fettuccine", and "folderol".

Normally the act goes like this:

"Hey Q, I'm making Fettuccine.. you want some?"
"Damn man, you droppin' f-bombs?  Bring it on!"
*Insert laughter until joke gets tired and old*

Then again irony in my house is like.. carbon, everything is made of the stuff..

Plus aren't we talking about a morning disc jockey?  Aren't they the very definition of "hella lame"?   Weren't they the ones that propagated that retarded "The Shocker" meme for so long?  Yeaah.. you heard me.

Every time I've heard this in real life I've feigned ignorance then after a moment said, "oooh. You mean 'fuck.'" I understand some people dance around certain words but "f-bomb" is just so incredibly stupid that I can't let it slide. Just say "f-word"

The V1 handsign has the index and middle fingers apart, not together.

Also: The V1 is in the air, not crammed halfway up a woman's particulars.

Hang the DJ.

I work with a morning DJ and he does, in fact, tell stories about The Shocker (two in the pink, one in the stink!).  We don't use slide whistle sound effects, however.

As I read today's cartoon about talking cats, I thought the DJ was referring to the usual f-bomb but Pat, being the UPTIGHT PRICK that he is, assumed that the DJ was talking about Fouc*ult because Pat is oblivious to Rod's sarcasm and chooses instead to think that he and Rod in the Morning are kindered souls.  Pat would love to have Rod's job (if you know what I mean) so he could belittle barbers on the radio without having to go through the HUMILIATION of being put on hold by SIMPLETON CALL SCREENERS.

Andalucia, could you please be more careful about dropping the "F-bomb" (we called it the F-word back in my day)?

Some of us are offended by strong language! (Like this guy in Oklahoma or Texas who tried to get his town to pass a law requiring people to say "heaven-o" instead of "hell-o" because hell is a bad word. I'm not fuck*ng kidding - I swear I remember this happening back in like 1994 or something.)

So, this confirms that Pat loves ball-less pop/rock. What's next, Coldplay? Man I want to see this dude in a room with Lyle or T on Friday night at Ray's.

Sorry about "ball-less." It fit here, even though it should probably be phased out of the rock lexicon. Also sorry to those who like U2, but you have to admit that "Hola" or "Hello" or whatever (the song where he counts 1..2..3..14!!) is the most rehashed piece of bill paying eva.

edit to be less of a jerk: I think Pat would like Coldplay because they are soft music with a regular beat. I think he would read crazy stuff into songs (like, "Yellow" is actually about third world poverty and disease).

I liked this strip, but it struck me as all wrong.  I cannot believe Pat would participate in a talk-show that used a sliding whistle for a sound effect.

He would be absolutely certain that they were mocking him, and he would write at length in his blog about how he had to switch stations until he found one where the host just droned on in a buzzing monotone and lilstened with rapt attention as Pat yelled and screamed.

PS:  Don't worry, Board, I'm not going to Pat on this subject.

Oh, you people!  The Shocker?  I love how quickly and openly everyone here talks about these things.

When it comes to AD's link to Rotten, I saw this article a couple years ago, but seeing it again, it just reminded me how ignorant teenagers can be when they try to look adult and "worldly" - I can kind of understand why the boys are using this jesture, but the girls?  In what appears to be their prom dresses?  With, you know, arbitrary numbers of fingers up?  Do they seriously have a clue?  Did they really think like this? "Gee I'm all pretty in my prom dress, and hey look here comes the yearbook guy - if he's gonna take my picture I want the world to know I'm pretty and I like a finger up my ass."  It's like the whole rainbow party (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rainbow_party_%28book%29) issue.  Kids love to exaggerate and/or repeat things that they've heard refuted or not, and adults are so scared that they're out of touch that they'll take things way too seriously.  In both cases, most of the kids don't know the true/full implications of what they are talking about, joking about, etc.

I read a somewhat interesting book called "Fast Girls" by Emily White, about the slut architype, and in it she tracks down highschool sluts, and checks out the "whole team" urban legend - you know, the one where the story goes that your local teen ho in one night sucked off/fucked the entire soccer, football, hockey, whatever team.  Inspite of several attempts and some open and honest talk with sluts, the boys who have sex with them, and other teens, she was unable to prove this story.  Yet, she was able to find this story being told in nearly every school she checked with in regard to each school's slut or sluts.   I heard the "whole team" rumour about my highschools slut - only it was all the guys on a band trip.

In my day we made damned sure band kids remained virgins until 30. WE accomplished this via a careful campaign of wedgies, swirlies, book dumping and propaganda intended to destroy their self-esteem. What is the world coming to?

See, in my group this didn't stop with college. The nerd group here is overall one of the most sexually active groups on campus and also verifiably the most incestuous. ("Okay, I give up. I had the misfortune of being friends with all the band kids, without actually being in band. So when they would go off on their orgy-fest trips, or even just get naked around each other before the game, I was nowhere to be seen.

The worst was when I sat with all of them in English class my senior year - when they left for the trip, I was the only one in my quadrant of the room - right in the middle of it. If you were to walk in and see it, you would be convinced that I had some infectious disease and had to stay at least five feet away from everyone.

So basically, I couldn't screw in the band because I wasn't IN THE BAND, and I couldn't screw outside the band because I was too close to the band. This is why my forearms are so strong today.
