I always prefer a Fuck you Friday to a Philippe's Philler Phriday.
Also, what is Ray doing in the last panel? At first, I thought he'd gotten so out of shape that he needed a mirror to see his junk, but instead, I think he's checking his belly button.
Also, remember the game Pizza Party? As in the jingle "Paaarty!" Pizza Paarty!" For some reason the term "pizza party" is one that worked it self into my daily vernacular a couple months ago and now I use to answer most questions these days. Example: "Hey Melanie, what are you working on there?" "My Pizza Party." "Really?" "No."
*edit* - that is definitly a Neil Diamond outfit, not a Neil Young one. Also: Sweet Caroline! Ba, Ba, Bah! Good times never felt so goooood!
-
Best line, "I believe it was Voltaire who said, 'Well then fuck them'"
Poor Ray.. he always knew he'd get the diabetes.
I think he was just checking out the fat in the mirror; maybe coming to terms with the fact that sour cream invented itself.
-
Well, there's my future, right there. Although I guess there probably won't be any $200 Nikes involved.
-
I think he's attempting to use a mirror to have a "rap session" with his diabetes/pancreas.
The Voltaire line is definitely the best, yeah. I want an excuse to use it in a conversation now.
-
Oh shit, Ray got the diabetes?
-
I'm thinking maybe he has pre-diabetes?
-
I am a big fan of these. Onstad, if you're reading- a lot more Fuck You Fridays, a few less Phillippe Phact Phridays.
And the Voltaire quote is so excellent I can taste it.
Also: Sweet Caroline! Ba, Ba, Bah! Good times never felt so goooood!
Funny story- I had never heard that song until last month, when my ladyfriend and I were shanghai'd into standing around awkwardly at her cousin's Sweet 16 party, trying to make sure they didn't, I don't know, commit the sex acts? I was just trying to not feel like I was violating Megan's Law when it turned out that a)yes, there is a dance to "Booty Call," and b)all of these 15 and 16 year old girls know it*. Anyway, yeah, that song came on, and I had never heard it, so I assumed it was some really obscure thing, until the DJ guy turned the speakers off so people would sing the chorus, and everyone actually did. I was horrified and confused.
*You know, I read back through that and I think I should make it clear that I'm not a child molester; what I mean is, you know that really creepy feeling you get when you see people a fair amount younger than you trying to act sexy, in a really awkward manner? I had that. And then I started to remember what I was doing at that age, and I felt really creeped out.
-
Oh shit, Ray got the diabetes?
Now he can hang out with Wilford Brimley.
In a crazy cosmic coincidence, I was listening to a new Neil Diamond song on the radio as I read this cartoon about talking cats. It was totally a Friday Fuck You from the Universe to me.
It's a good song - "Delerious Love," featuring Brian Wilson. Find it if you dare.

Isn't it crazy when this happens? It makes me feel like the gods are smiling upon us. Someone in another thread (the blogs I think) linked to the strip where Beef got the shirt from Molly in heaven today, and when I was reading it, at the precise moment Cornelius said: "Who do you think you are?" Sarah Cracknell belted it out on the song, "Who Do You Think You Are?" by Saint Etienne. WEIRD!
-
Who has a dj at a birthday party? That's just excessive.
So he's telling his gut that it can't come to his pizza party. Isn't that kind of where guts come from?
-
I'm deliriously happy over this strip. I think this is the funniest shit since the baby came. Neil Diamond vs. Neil Young, the Voltaire quote, talking to his diabetes, taunting his diabetes, it's all gold. Gold I tell you. My favorite though is him telling Dr. Andretti "Can this wait" (the diagnosis) until he's finished peeing.
It's like a whole week of funny in one strip.
~Paul
-
And he's peeing so much because he has the Diabetes! Funny!
-
Like Ray, I confuse Neil Young and Neil Diamond, because I don't know who either of them are. That is also true for: Billy Joel/Billy Idol and Billy Idol/Boy George/Rod Stewart/David Bowie.
(I realise I'm setting myself up for ridicule, but I don't much care. I don't listen to any of the aforementioned artists' music, so I'm okay with not knowing who they are.)*
*If any of you are die-hard fans of these musicians and are deeply offended, I am sorry; I brought this up because I think it is funny, and don't mind poking fun at myself.
-
I think we've got a lot of Neil Young fans here. I don't care if you listen to him or not, but I will ask this question, don't you like good music?
~Paul
-
Oh shit, Ray got the diabetes?
It was the milk! Those crazy vegans were right!
-
I am a big fan of these. Onstad, if you're reading- a lot more Fuck You Fridays...
Also, if you could toss in a few Fuck You Wednesdays and Fuck You Mondays...that would be cool as well.

what's wrong with you people, philippe fridays are amazing
this is pretty nice too though

Amen.
Did you know that the latin translation of diabetes mellitus means "the copious urination of honey."

You know what else is amazing? Ending questions with a question mark and not a comma. Sorry, this the closest I can actually get to honoring the original premise of FUF.
Panel 4 reminded me of something (http://achewood.plagiarist.com/viewtopic.php?t=2236&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=50) (Arkabee's post). Another cosmic linkage, maybe.

I'm glad you qualified that. Because at first I was like, "that was pretty mean and random."

Nice of Onstad to provide an explanation of what Ray was going for with his outfit seen in the Sick Flivver strip. Neil Young? Neil Diamond? Why not combine them?!?
But the question is, Why? Costume party, whatev.
Now Ray is in good company with Brimley and B.B. King. Fortunately we live in an age where only tiny blood samples are needed for accurate testing. Thus, we can be assured of seeing King singing for years to come. For instance, wouldn't Brimley, King and Ray singing I Like to Live the Love I Sing About just be a great experience?

I was just about to say this. All of this, really. Goddammit.
FUCK YOU, FRIDAY.
EDIT: WOW! 187 TERRIBLE POSTS

Thank you for the info.
Again, I'm not fit for this whole friday thing. Sorry Rumpy. No hard feelings? Well, before it gets too late I'd like to say to everyone here...GAHGGGGAKK...HAPPY HOLIDAYS HAVE A GOOD WEEKEND.
Did I do it? Huh? Huh?

I'd like to think that I listen to good music, but it's subjective.
Did you know that the latin translation of diabetes mellitus means "the copious urination of honey."
Yes, I did. It makes sense because increased glucose concentrations in the blood are not accompanied by the normal negative feedback response of insulin secretion, causing more glucose to accumulate in the excretory filtrate (urine), which is necessarily accompanied by increased excretion of water to counteract the higher osmolarity.
Bottom line: PEOPLE WITH DIABETES PEE MORE AND IT IS SUGARY-SWEET.
-
I would also like the join the camp that enjoyed this strip. And is it me, or does Ray run like a Peanuts character?

put these shoes on and have legs like mine. (http://achewood.com/index.php?date=12272004)

... you know, he does. And looking at that panel again made me laugh at the ludicrousness of Ray's $200 Nikes, which are indescribably tiny.
-
Is anyone else unsure as to whether lifestyle:diabetes/nail:hammer actually makes sense?
-
That means that diabetes hits his lifestyle like a hammer hits a nail, right?
So it would hammer home Ray's lifestyle? Or solidify it, making it strong and dependable?
Or it would flatten it?
Yeah, it doesn't make any sense. I think the inverse may make some sense, though:
Ray's lifestyle is to diabetes what a hammer is to a nail.
Even then it's not clever or funny, but at least it makes some semblance of sense.
-
Been prepping for the SAT's, Jough?
-
I took it to mean that his lifestyle was making his diabetes worse.
~Paul
-
"This is the kind of lifestyle that diabetes is designed to smack into".
-
Yeah, I don't think that was what Onstad meant. I believe it's more of a "Ray's lifestyle drives in diabetes like a hammer does a nail."
But still, it's not a very good analogy/simile.

Dr. Andretti didn't go to med school to craft witty analogies. He went to med school to become a doctor.

August west--
there are no longer analogies on the SAT. I cried hot tears when I discovered this.
And then, a -year- after they made all of the changes, my school asked me to write an article about it for the school paper. long after people had stopped caring. I got pretty upset about that, too.

That's not an Andretti original, though. I heard it a long time ago in the context of correct toilet practice during water shortages, albeit not with the final line.

We've all heard that part, but the final line is what makes it brilliant.
