The man with the blood on his hands. (http://www.achewood.com/index.php?date=02242006) Panels 1-5 were harsh, but the rest vent off the pressure pretty well. The Tenmen stage shot looks awesome.
-
Ya know, I could probably type about this strip for a half hour, at least. But instead I am just going to pour a tumbler of whiskey and think about ex-girlfriends eating heavily sauced pasta.
-
Good. This is the only follow-up to pulling off a man's jaw that i'd accept.
At least where Ray is concerned.
Great writing in this one though, kinda justifies seeing Ray puke.
-
This is ten times better than anything I dared hope for.
Ray is still Ray.
I loved the kind of momentary relief the strip provides, just in time for the weekend. Althought there is an ominous "calm before the storm" feeling as well. Kind of like in a war movie where the troops are relaxing for a bit but you just know some serious shit is going to go down soon.
Also loved the claws in Ray's hands (paws?) in the closeup. Kind of drives home the fact that yes, ripping someone's face clean off is quite doable with these things.
Panel 7 with Beef is excellent. Like he's been watching the whole thing and is still completely on top of things.
What's with the chicken wire and barbed wire, are the organizers afraid that the contestants will attack the Tenmen? And how does the band get off the stage?

Word, seeing Ray puke always sucks (http://www.achewood.com/index.php?date=12182003).

SHUT UP just SHUT THE HELL UP.
I think it's an artistic thing, actually. Any extra details like speakers or doors would have ruined the panel.

...yeah, I know what you mean. just trying to be funny i guess.

So at least we get why there was no strip yesterday. Today we got a SUPER-STRIP. I was glad to see Ray felt BAD that he ripped some dude's face off. I know a lot of people here were worried he's changing. Nope. Still ol' Ray, just now, not believing he just de-faced a man. Ahh and Beef is so ninja-sweet, all coming from the shadows, all watching all the time. Haha, god, the idea of that cat challegning Ray basically to get hurt in the first place is great. He's got his own team of cosmetic surgens right outside. I expect he's gotten it done quite a few times before. THAT explains why he had no mouth in the first place. ;D
-
Something bothers me now.
In the last strip, the Honky Tonk Blowjob Duder said:
"Oh, and I'll be takin' that little gang of yours with me. Give 'em a chance at fightin' under a real man."
Then today, Beef said:
"Now that you've kicked the ass of the only other army leader it looks like you're dining alone tomorrow"
Now, is it just me, or does something here not add up? Maybe my brain ain't wired right, but from what Honky Tonk said I understood that he wanted to take charge of Ray's army (against some other army) - but what Beef says sounds like the guy was already the leader of some other crew.

his mother didn't want him to look for that ability in himself
I dont' really have anything else to say.
I want to see the Tenmen.
but I don't imagine that the kind of people who fight 3000 other men (/cats) would enjoy them. I mean... rickenbackers are not so hardcore. they seem like they'd like some angry music.
-
Okay Mr. Chris Onstad, IF THAT IS YOUR REAL NAME.
I appologize for doubting you. You win, okay?
Dear lord do I love the Tenmen, just the entire concept of a rickenbaker drumset makes me quiver with delightful joy like a child with his first RC car.
Ray is Ray here, but Beef is just stone cold, the panel with his hand out and "Nice work", I was all daaaaaaamn Beef.
-
And how (http://www.achewood.com/index.php?date=06062005).
Good call, never has a shade of grey been so gross. And it's the bg color for the typing area on TOUAMB. How come?
So at least we get why there was no strip yesterday. Today we got a SUPER-STRIP. I was glad to see Ray felt BAD that he ripped some dude's face off.
It felt so good when Ray disfigured Cody Travis. I am glad there was some blowback, though. I felt a little bad. It took a cartoon cat destroying another cat to show me my humanity.
Also, welcome Color-me-brad. Isn't that a plush toy that you can color and wash again and again?
-
All is forgiven Onstad. Thank frickin' GOD for this strip.
-
"He's fine, he has stuff for his album"
Brilliant.
-
Now, is it just me, or does something here not add up? Maybe my brain ain't wired right, but from what Honky Tonk said I understood that he wanted to take charge of Ray's army (against some other army) - but what Beef says sounds like the guy was already the leader of some other crew.
He probably wanted to add Ray's army to his own, thus resulting in an even larger army. So does Ray get to lead Honky Tonk Blowjob's army now?
I picture the Tenmen being secured in thier crate outside the walls, being lowered onto the stage by a crane, and then, at the end of the show, being taken out again.
-
"A three day dutch fugue" was just added to my vocabulary. It's guaranteed to be the next phrase that I use in a public situation which will fall flat as soon as it leaves my lips.
also, does anyone else think that "The Tenmen (http://www.achewood.com/index.php?date=10122004)" are the achewood analogue to "The Locust"? (http://www.thelocust.com/)

Right. Beef and Cody each had an army to command but there are still lots of people out there who didn't join either side and are going it alone. I guess we'll have to see if Cody's army comes up with a new leader from within or just disintegrates.
I'm guessing the Tenmen's box has a hook on the top so the crane can pick them up and take them to safety after the show.
-
The injury crane coming to pick up the box at the end of their set...A team of guys all prying the wire off the box...The Tenmen just standing there staring, silently congragulating themselves on a good show...
As for the big question in this strip, does it seem weird to anyone else that a GOF champion would allow his son to be named Fauntleroy? Or do these guys have a tradition of not being at all involved in their childrens' lives? It explains so much!
-
To be fair, Fauntleroy Brown's father was named Stanley; it's possible that they just came from a line of kung-fu accountants. It's also possible that "Fauntleroy" was his Fight nickname, picked up before the Fugue, when he was still perceived as a non-qualifying nancy boy coasting on his father's legacy. The possibilities are endless!
Have I mentioned that this is the best arc ever yet? Because it is. We have a graceful recovery of Ray's character, a continued deepening of Beef-as-Rorschach, a cameo from the Tenmen... glorious.
-

See I always thought the Tenmen looked resemblant of the Aquabats (http://www.theaquabats.com/index_old.html).
When they play in my head though, they sound like what would happen if you took half a zygote from Pavement, Grandaddy, Echo and the Bunnymen, Devo, and mixed it up into a weird baby superband that was somehow made up of singing cats. After I think about this too much I usually go and have a sandwich to come down.
They are all about Maaaaaaking love in a Limo on an Airplane on a Spaceship bound for Space (http://www.achewood.com/index.php?date=10122004) which is why I love them because that is what I'm all about.
Once I get the limo.
And the airplane.
Oh and the spaceship....

So much awesome goodness. What a great way of finishing the week.
So I guess we can put the "hat with hell of properties" theory aside now.
And the Tenmen... it's amazing how they can rock that hard with one single snare drum. I uploaded the crate picture onto their page on Last.fm, so now we need 10 people to vote YES for it so it sticks.
-
Picking a nit here.
Alt-text says Ray's not much of a Tenmen fan...
Wha...? (http://www.achewood.com/index.php?date=02042005)
Oh nevermind. I guess having them play is more of an image and hipsterism thing.
This strip was great, regardless.
-
I wonder what the comparative deadliness of a Dutch Fugue versus a Rock and Roll Shit Fugue is.
-
So I guess we can put the "hat with hell of properties" theory aside now.
I don't know, maybe it has the Properties, but after all these years it blinks in and out a little bit. That would be a god damned dangerous hat to have, all making you a stone thug one minute, all leaving you with your bloody hands and conscience the next.
-

See, it's a Dutch fugue because the Dutch were Protestant and the French were Catholic, you see? Thus they are Fuguenots.
Education.
-
People, we have been neglecting a seriously wonderful phrase in today's strip:
WITHOUT...EVER HAVIN' MUCH TO DO WITH HIS FISTS IN GENERAL.
Also, the use of "fugue" as a verb is giggle-worthy.
-
"The Man With Blood On His Hands" has a slightly different shade to it now.
Out, damn spot!

Boo to that.

What a masterpiece. Onstad is right on top of the question of "old Ray" vs "GOF Ray", the internal conflict here transcends being a mere comic strip about funny talking cats and stuffed animals. My favorite part about this has to be that Beef saw this coming a mile away. His development in this arc is most interesting, as his character has been the one over the years that Onstad has most allowed to grow and change. I'm starting to believe he walks out of the GOF the winner, with help from Ray.

The alt-text says alot of things. In fact, I think it was CANCEL due to NOT PROFITABLE a while ago.
-
What if Beef is lying? What if that guy was not Cody Travis but just some cowboy-hatted macho dude, now horribly disfigured for life... possibly dead! I don't think it's something Beef would do, but it does strike me as I read the strip as something that could happen, with slightly different characters, a slightly different feel to the strip. Though, things are certainly different lately.
Also, this strip is just beautiful. I'd like to comment on the first panel, which takes some context to appreciate by itself but is wonderful. The crane all beeping away, leaving Ray with his thoughts. So good.
-
Just to say I love panel 3, with Ray looking at his hands dripping, goofy but sinister hat all slant in his head, blank pensive expression... lovely, lovely. Also, on the sinisterness department, musings about how it's easier to buy Rorschach Beef with his goggles on - they keep you from seeing his eyes, those two slits that have a rather endearing feel to them.
Also, someone give lprkn a tiny can for the "vile spot" comment, quick ^^

Its to protect them from the flying beer bottles. It worked for The Blues Brothers, it will work for the Tenmen. I imagine the Tenmen sound like a cross between Shadowy Men From a Shadowy Planet, Man Or Astroman?, Tom Waits (esp Blood Money) and Nick Cave. A very listenable instrumental surf sound with just enough creepy mixed in to make it interesting.

Interesting. I don't see why Beef wouldn't do it, though. Notwithstanding whatever genius twist Onstad comes up with, there are two options how this turns out: Ray (Beef?) cruises to a championship, or they get stomped, possibly fatally. Not that Beef is showing any signs of wavering, but it is interesting that his eyes haven't been visible from the get-go. Failure is not an option, and everything is permissible.

I considered the same thing as well.

Having understood the healing power of self-delusion, Beef is just pulling the Samuel H. Invisible wool over Ray's eyes to soften the blow.

OHHHHHHH MANNN, that is the bottom of Ray's foot! (in the first panel)
And I went to sleep last night thinking that this strip suggests the entire arc is a dream, because the first panel was a hallucination in which Ray perceived his right leg as amputated. But it seems today that it simply his foot in perspective.
Nonetheless, the arc still seems like Ray's dream; an odd tug of war between success and dependence.

Dearest Q,
Since Uncle has found our secret mailbox, I leave you this note in this strange place where many mysterious missives are posted for all to see. As he cannot read a full page without falling into a drunken stupor, I trust that he will not persist in perusing these pages until he discovers our communication.
Q, I hardly know where to begin to tell you of my recent revelations - After my narrow escape from the frightening game, the mustache'd man led me to a church where I sought shelter from the beasts of the night. I lay upon the cold stone, bereft of sleep for thinking of your continued suffering at the hands of our Uncle. As I drew your cloak close around me and breathed in your sweet scent, my gaze fell upon a volume. I stood, planning to examine the pages within, hoping to find distraction if not the impossible surcease from sorrow.
As I did so, I chanced to face a certain stained glass window and felt a strange familiarity. Out of the mists of time came a memory of our sainted mother. Q, she had taken us to this very church when we were young, and told us that this was where we had both been baptized.
My steps quickened at this thought and I reached for the dusty tome. It was, as I thought, the birth records of the parish. I turned the pages in haste, thinking of the comfort of seeing our dear parents' names written therein.
But Q, when I found our entries - I can hardly write the words - I found that we have been deceived. I trust that they had their reasons, that they would never have meant to cause us pain, but they lied. Q, we are not brother and sister.
No longer caring to conceal my presence in the church, in a frenzy I sought out the aged priest. He explained that our parents had adopted you when your mother, a young woman with no man to care for her, had died in childbirth.
I felt a strange joy at this revelation. Q, my darling, this changes everything, doesn't it? Please, we must find a means to release you from the foul clutches of Uncle. More than ever, I cannot wait until you are at my side.
Your devoted
W

Dearest Q,
<Letter>
W
Dearest W,
Uncle Hermann has seen fit to outfit me in the attic with a rather large supply of maggoty ship's biscuits. He states that he will keep me locked in here but provided with food and warmth so long as I am not too loud. He has of course, sewn my lips together in an effort to inspire me to the level of silence he desires. I await until I hear him fraught with gin and deep in a snoring sleep before I hobble over to the barrel and crumble the biscuits to fit them in between each stitch. The crumbs often run down my gown making me itchy, but it is all I can do to keep warm.
Two nights prior, Uncle Hermann bounded up the stairs with that disturbing grunt of a noise he calls laughter. He was sporting a massive pipe filled with something that smelled not unlike soap. As I was still tied up, he sat before me and smoked this foul device; blowing in my face all the while. I coughed and sputtered, the putrid stench of his sweet rotten fruit smelling breath mixing with the soapy substance, I shudder merely to remember it. As I inhaled the heady mixture I saw naught but horrifying images.
I saw you in a church and a priest of lies spilling foulness into your tender ears.
I saw the miles between us tear themselves apart and the cries of a thousand filling the night with a loss that none shall bear lightly.
I saw the Dragon, his maw hungry for my frail form as I stumbled from Uncle's cabin; my escape surely lost.
And the last I saw hurt the most, I dare not write it for fear of solidifying these horrible visions. Just please, give up your quest if you can read this; find somewhere else, think no longer of me for I am already gone.

YOU tell Lemmy he ain't hardcore. (http://www.anotherstateofmind.net/TS%20LEMMY.JPG)

well, I meant...
more of the guitar side.
are rickenbacker basses all chimey and jangley, too?
PS: Motorhead! *rocks out awkwardly*
-
In as much as a bass can be jangly/chimey, the Rick bass is!
It has a neck-through design, as opposed to bolt-on, and that helps bring out the brighter, higher end of the bass instrument's register. It also has a lot of sustain.
Think Chris Squire of Yes, he really brought out its distinctive trebly sound. Geddy Lee of Rush also played one during his earlier years.
-
Geddy Lee of Rush also played one during his earlier years.
Geddy Lee is why I wanted one. Paul McCartney also played one frequently back in the 70's. I think they make the most beautiful sound, those Rickenbacker basses.
