Because our buddy Jason in Hawaii likes to shun external validation from strangers I think it's only fitting that he have his own thread so we can tell him attaboy. He's expecting his third child and we know he's a proud father. Way to go AD, it couldn't have happened to a nicer guy. Keep us informed as the pregnancy progresses. And of course post a picture of your wife's belly when it's at it's hugest.
Sincerely,
Your Internet Friend
~Paul
-
I was gonna say, "awwww."
But then I remembered... This kid is up to no good.
-
With overpopulation being endemic, I'd like to congratulate AD and family for being part of the problem!
I was going to say "mazel tav" but I understand that it is bad luck to say that until after the baby has been born, so I am setting my calendar for 8 months from now when I assume the baby will be born and we can wish you proper yiddish congratulations.
-
I don't know about overpopulation, but I for one would like to thank AlohaDawg for picking up the slack so the rest of us can stick to having puppies.
-
I have chosen to refrain from the inappropriate things I said on annoucement of the last pregnancy.
Hence, I will simply point everyone here (http://www.tshirthell.com/babyhell.shtml) to consider baby shower gifts.
-
You rock, Mel.
Did I mention that the Lord has provided me with yet another female child?
We need a name to go with Rebecca Delaney and Sarah Ka`iulani
Suggestions appreciated.
Also, Baby is due in July. Just to add to the excitement, my contract here ends in June and our lease is up July 1 (and the landlord is moving back in).
Excitement.

Molly. Duh.
-
A poll! A poll!
-
A poll! A poll!
That's not a very good name at all.
~Paul
-
Suggestions appreciated.
How about...Taj?
-
We've got little Paul Richard due in July, too. We've been walking really softly thus far, for obvious reasons.
Awesome. Maybe we should have moved to LA...
It's good to have non-blood cousins.
-
Awesome. Maybe we should have moved to LA...
It's good to have non-blood cousins.
Yes, you should have!
-
Bless you, Dawg. If you aren't picking up my slack, someone else can have it.
-
appropriately quiet congratulations and good wishes to you and yours, 'dan.
Dawg, do you want to go with another Hawaiian middle name, or is that negotiable? I would definitely tend to go with the "classic first name, interesting middle name" trend again.
-
What about Seven?
Seven Mulva Dawg. I like it.
-
Three daughters? And I thought I lived in a henhouse!
I'm very happy for you AD. Although I understand that they have recently discovered what causes pregnancy.
I'm sure your housing situation will work out, probably for the better. Lillies of the field, dude. Lillies of the field.
-
Congrats AD, I'd chime in with my usual poo-pooing of childbirth as 'the thing so special that everyone can do it' but you are good people and I'm sure you'll do right by your little ones so they grow up with good character and post on a cartoon cat related message board.
-
AlohaDawg is going to get the validation of imaginary people on the internet whether he likes it or not. Cans for everyone!
-

Well, <I can't>.
OK, so thanks everyone for the wishes, and to all other expectants, of course, best wishes as well. Probably going with the Hawaiian middle name again, so that if it came to pass that we don't live here forever, some of the mana maybe follows the kid around.
Right now, it seems like Abigail, Elizabeth and Rachel are in front but it's months away yet.
J
-
All lovely names. I like Rachel and Elizabeth a bit more than Abigail, but all three are simple and elegant.
-
My favorite name is Tiffany. I don't understand what it is about it. Tiffany. It sounds so nice.
-
Abby, Ratch, or Liz. Hm.
Sometimes I think people forget that kids will pretty much never be called by their given name once they reach some social plateau (school, usually).
A friend of mine named her daughter "Esmerelda" and hates that people call her "Ezzy" now. What the fuck else do you call someone with a four syllable name? Elda? Mer?
-
'Smerel'
AD: Now I feel totally a dick and you understand why I try to keep my mouth shut during other people's joyous events. As a gesture of goodwill I believe 'Evey' is a good name, different without sounding stupid or made up, and is short enough that there are relatively few cruel taunts or nicknames that could be devised from it.
-
Sometimes I think people forget that kids will pretty much never be called by their given name once they reach some social plateau (school, usually).
But this is why Elizabeth is such a good name. She can be Liz, Liza, Beth, Betty, she can decide to be Eliza - even, I work with an Elizabeth who is called Eli. Or she could be radical and insist that everyone dignify her with all four syllables.
Anyway though that doesn't happen to all names. My name was never messed with or shortened - I didn't like it, but there was nothing you could really do to it. I had to wait for the Internet to be called something different.

I think Elisabeth is more elegant and interesting.
I've never had problems with my name being shortened, either. But I do get called Julie a lot.
-
Yay, a girl!
What about Jasmine? I imagine there's lots of Jasmines in your local - it's sort of become an adopted Hawian name, but I love that name.
Zoe or Chloe and Raven are all favorites of mine.
I have known a couple of great Abbies in my day, and a couple of really practical Gails, but be prepaired: no teenager will ever want to be called Abigail, so it will be one or the other. Also, I really like the name Elizabeth because it leaves a lot of options for when the girl grows up: Beth is great, really practical yet cool sounding, also Liz is good, and even though it's long, I still come across a few girls who sill call themselves by the full name. I'm not a fan of Lizzy though, and "Lizzy" just needs to a avoided.
-
so um
Elizabeth is a great name.
But I'm biased. I have a grandmother named Elizabeth, cousins named Lisa and Beth, and a girlfriend named Elizabeth (goes by liz)
so
babies are wonderful. I love them. Don' t listen to the haters.
Congratulations to you and your family.
-
Elizabeth has the advantage of relative flexibility of nickname, with a lot of range for personality; that has some value to it. (Inevitably the kid will decide she wants to be called something else, though. I think I badly scandalized my parents when I decided that I wanted to be adressed by my full first name, not the common cutesy shortening, at about age five.)
-
oh me too!
I used to get really really mad when people called me Dan or Danny.
and now my parents are upset, because they've heard my friends calling me Dan.
Until age 9 or 10, my mom thought her name was "Janni" (pronounced... yanni). She then saw her passport, which told her that This was actually a shortening of her middle name (Dejaniera).
Then, when she got her birth certificate, she found out that this wasn't even her middle name. her middle name was her first name. her real first name was the name of some relative.
her parents never told her this.
-
I remember reading somewhere that Elisabeth is the one name in the English language with the most nicknames.
-
Elizabeth is a freakin' fantastic name. I recommend it. (http://www.bigfool.com/elizabeth/bwlizzie.jpg)
-
I'm pretty sure we covered the nickname thing before. A child's capacity for cruelty is boundless, and they will come up with nicknames, even if your child is a being of pure thought with no corporeal body.
-

Cute.... overload...
-
I had two interesting, nerdy, smart, fun friends in HS, one named Elisabeth and one named Bethany. They went by Libit and Beth. I think maybe I'll figure out a way to put those together.
Elisabethany is a little long, though.
-
The only Hawaiian word that seemed like it would make a neato middle name for a girl is makana which means "gift."
Elizabeth Makana Nehal.
I thought about running with luakini "temple for human sacrifice," then thought better of it.

Living here, though, makes is a little harder since the #1 and #2 dog names are 'Koa' and 'Makana' and a ton of kids are named that too. For a middle name, though, I like it since one reason to give her such a middle name is to make sure someting of Hawaii stays with here forever.
Luakini would make a hella good name for a pit bull, though.

Hmmm. Yeah, I can see her a few years down the line saying "You got my middle name from the dog?!?"
Luakini would be a great name for a pit bull; I just don't think people should own pit bulls as pets in the first place.
note from AD: I think I hit modify instead of quote here (I quoted above) and then I must have saved it rather than closed the window - and that's why it says 'edited'. I don't think I actually changed anything - certainly nothing needed changing. Bumblefuck mistake. Sorry.
-
Hmmm. Yeah, I can see her a few years down the line saying "You got my middle name from the dog?!?"
Hey, it worked for Indiana Jones..
-
I'm Bumpin' this thread in anticipation of the newest young'un. Might tomorrow, will be Friday if not.
-
And of course post a picture of your wife's belly when it's at it's hugest.
Ahem...
~Paul
-
She'll get mad at me but I'll ask anyway.
Wouldn't you rather have boob pictures at their hugest? Naw, that'll make her mad too.

Excitement.
Also, excitement update:
1) I got renewed on my contract but I start with the US Postal Service Aug 7
2) We are one month in a new lease in a house with a real big yard by HI standards, bike/walk distance to the beach
3) Hannah Noelani Nehal
Pictures soon.
-
Woah. I missed all this. Another!?
Congratulations dude!
And the house sounds awesome. Being close to the beach is the best, only being close to the beach in Hawaii has to be way better than on the coast of the North Sea!
-
1. Hooray!
2. Hooray!
3. Hooray!
-
1. Hooray!
2. Hooray!
3. Hooray!
You're just getting me back for... succincting (I claim that one) something you said the other day. Darn!
-
HOORAY! Congratulations to you AD and to Mrs. D and all the little D's. (d's?)
-

1) Cool! What will you be doing with the Postal Service?
2) That sounds awesome - do you have a vegetable garden?
3) Hannah is a beautiful name. Good Choice, and goes well with the two other names too. I'm sure she'll break your heart with the flutter of her eye lashes.
All the best at bringing the girl into the world!
-
does "pictures soon" mean that Small Hannah is born?
If yes: Congratulations on having a Baby who, I'm sure, is Beautiful and Great.
-
Congrabulations are in order! Huzzah to you sir! I look forward to the further adventures of this new addition!
-
Congratulations!
Hannah sounds like "hana" which is Japanese for "flowers" which is pretty. I don't know the origin of Hannah, but that name is in the title of one of Woody's best films, so I'm a fan. I think it's Scottish?
So the next time you "go postal" here you'll literally be able to go postal?
What was the other thing? I kinda got disoriented when there was mention of large boobs.
-
Way to go forth and multiply AD.
Hannah is a good name, not a new fangled one like morgan or piper but not in the same class as elizabeth or bridgett either. Good call there.
-
Congratulations!
-
Sorry to get you all excited! Pictures soon as in hours after she is born...which is also soon....but, thanks! Also, other thread, great to see pics of Lil' Asher going home!
Should be tomorrow or Friday morning, latest. Seriously.
-
Well, in that case, congrats on everything except the birth, which I will offer you additional congratulations for in a matter of hours. Yeaaa for shit coming together!
-
Hannah Noelani is here! Born at 8:14 am HST, weighing in at a petite 5 lbs, 12 oz and 19" long. Blue eyes (so far) and daddy's dimpled chin!

Congratulations, 'Dawg. I myself do not know the joy of childbirth* but I can only imagine you feel on top of the world. I hope that you, the missus, the other sprogs and especially young Hannah are doing just fine.
*In my case, the 'joy of childbirth' will be watching my wife in agony while I slip off to the side and whisper in the doctor's ear "As for the name? Put it down as..."
-
Yeaaaaaa! Congratulations! Glad everything went well. Need pictures of cute baby girl, please.
-
Happy Happy! Joy Joy!
-
oh, judy, you will get such a smack if you do that.
my friend's dad did it. So he has gone through life as "Jamey" because his mum had not discusses the spelling of his first name with his father.
I am not really sure what more masculine way to spell Jamey there is, but, you know.
Dawg-- awesome! The name Hannah is a great one, one of my favorites. In fact, there is a bonus: I do not know anyone named Hannah, really, so I do not automatically associate your little one with someone I dislike! party all around!
-
High fives all around. Exploding cigars forthwith.
Congrats to you and yours, 'Dawg. Truly, a happy day.
-
Awesomeness abounds. Congratulations, J.
-

You can't see the ones in the thread? Hmmm...anyone else? You could go to my embarassingly non-updated family pic blog http://www.nehalfamily.blogspot.com/
-
Congrats, J. I'm sure she's already a blessing. May she continue to be.
-
Dude, she's blowing raspberries at you (http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/4729/161/1600/Hannah%27s%20Birth-day%20007.jpg) right out of the box. You're in for some serious trouble with this one.
Mother Who is this man holding me? (http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/4729/161/1600/Hannah%27s%20Birth-day%20016.jpg)
Praise the Lord and pass the Darvocet (http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/4729/161/1600/Hannah%27s%20Birth-day%20015.jpg).
Congratulations on the beautiful healthy child Dawg, i'm very happy for you.

The pictures -- they do not go!
Nonetheless, congratulations to AD and family on a child whom I'm sure is lovely.
-
The pictures -- they do not go
No?, they are showing just fine for me? Hmmm.
~Paul
-
Congratulations on producing a delicious-looking microhuman.
-
I love it when babies look like they're not quite done yet - like they need a couple extra minutes in the oven or something. She's adorable, as is the rest of your clan.
Nope, no pics in the thread, but the blog was great.
-
Congrats again! She's so little! I bet you're both pretty tired!
Looking at your blog, I was reminded how great all your girls' names are, and how well they fit together: Becca, Sarah and now Hannah.
Also, looking at your blog, I enjoyed seeing you on the hairdresser's hossy. It pleased me.
-
The pictures don't work for me either. Very strange. But the blog works. More blog!
-
While I was secretly hoping she'd wait until my birthday, she does share one with my Aunt Kay, who is a slightly-crazy-but-in-a-good-way kindergarten teacher and one of the nicest people I've ever met.
I wasn't able to see the pictures as 'Dawg posted them or when Paul linked to them, but when I went to the blog site they work fine. I think they just have good hotlinking protection. Hannah looks like she's had a very hard day. Someday she'll wonder how we lived without some invention we haven't even dreamed of yet.
Also confidential to the father: it is July.
-
dawg, that baby is cute. as is the rest of your family. congratulations on that.
-
Report of further experimentation: If I just try to load the URL again in the new window that comes up with the error message, then I get the pictures.
-
That's so weird! I can see them in the thread just fine.
I'm using Firefox. I wonder if that makes a difference...
Thanks for the kind words, everyone is doing just fine. Apgars were 9/9. She's eating well, pooping and sleeping which is all they do at this age. This one, like the oldest one, does the quivering chin crying that is SO CUTE.
I never keep it in my head just how small these little protohumans are. So tiny! Just 17 months ago we had Sarah and she looks like Godzilla when she's anywhere near the new baby.
The 7 year old big sister is very enamored with the little baby. She's concerned that no one will talk to her anymore because they will all pay attention to the baby (again!).
-
I use firefox too, but I've got the mac version, so maybe that makes a difference?
Big sistering's tough. Does she get to help out with the baby stuff this time? You'll have a built-in sitter before you know it!
Storytime: I was about 3 1/2 when my little sister was born. I don't really remember much about the process, except that mom was exceptionally prone to anger and/or tears and that sort-of scared me. Oh, and we had a really sweet scientific-looking book that had pictures of various stages of fetal development in it. But the night my mom went into the hospital, everybody was in the living room, and our next door neighbor (who was a nurse) came over. For some reason, they wanted a stethescope. I had one in my giraffeer price doctor kit that actually worked, but I was absolutely unwilling to give it up so they could use it to listen to this crazy thing that was parasitizing my mom and making her cry. I don't remember the resolution of that situation for sure, but I think they just gave up and went to the hospital.
-
Mite, it's wonderful how the adults in your world come off as frightening and insane in that story.
Adult 1: Gee your mom might be in labour. Let's not be sensible and go to the hospital, lets just call over one of the neighbors.
Mom: Ohh! The contractions! Mini Mite, at this moment I have an intense disliking of you for no logical reason! You are a bad child!
Mini Mite: Maybe you should just take mom to the hospital?
Nurse (entering): Hello, I am your neighbor and also a nurse and I can tell you if your mom in in labour, but I need a stethescope. Even though I am a nurse, I didn't bring the things I needed. Does anyone have a stethescope?
Adult 2: Mini Mite has a giraffeer Price Stethescope that should do the trick. Mini Mite, may we use your stethescope?
Mini Mite: I really think it would be better to go to the hospital.
Mom: (weeping) Oh, Mini Mite, I'm sorry that I called you a bad child! Mommy love you! Mommy loves yoooou!
Nurse: How unreasonable! Why would we go to the hospital! Now where's your toy stethescope?
Mini Mite: I'm going to go wait in the car, please feel free to join me when you come to your senses.
-
Man Side Show, I don't think we read the same story. I read about a Mother who was angry and/or sad due to the hormones of pregnancy and it frightened the young daughter. Her parents suspected that the Mother had gone into labor, but weren't sure so they called over a neighbor, a professional in the field, to ask for advice. She didn't bring a stethescope because it was at the Hospital where she works. When the 3 1/2 year old child was asked for her toy she acted petulant and possessive as many young children are prone to do. The rest of the story is that they probably forced the stethescope from the child and then eventually went to the hospital because that's what they were going to do anyway. The nurse was only there to tell them if it was too soon or not.

damn, Paul. Way to be pickles on the parade.
or the non-parade, as the case may be.
I was the proud and non-upset older sibling. I basically thought it was Awesome to have a smaller brother (mostly because my best friend had a baby sister and I was jealous.) My mom is still all sad that my brother and sister do not get on as well as my brother/sister and I do. It is because my parents managed to convince me that I could be a Big Boy and help them with the baby, while my brother realized that he was going to Lose Out with a new baby sister.
She's cuter than he is, anyway. Although that isn't stopping the girls from calling our house at all hours to get him. I am still proud of my baby brother-- even though now he is taller than me. The ladies love him so much that it is hilarious.
-
Ah, now I'm getting things to work. Awesome. Also, the baby is lovely, Dawg.
-
Congrats, Dawg!
