Title: Pat Moment of the Day - Search Boxes
Post by: jough on April 05, 2006, 04:22:26 pm
Hi.

Current thing that pisses me off: a search box at the top of a web site that initiates a search of the INTERNET, not a search within the site I am currently visiting.

If I wanted to search the internet, I would just go to Google.com.  I don't need to do that from YOUR site, asshole.

Current thing that pisses me off - People who think they can do ANYTHING with their automobiles as long as they put their blinkers on.  Blocking rush hour traffic? Causing a backup for several blocks behind me? It's OK, I've got my blinkers on.  NO IT ISN'T, ASSHOLE.

What's currently pissing me off is partially-fermented maple syrup. The fuckers!

Also, password registration systems that are not clear about why your password was rejected and/or do so on a basis inconsistent with the rules as presented.

I say we all sign up for snubster.

Currently I am annoyed by people who turn right from the travel lane when a perfectly good right-turn lane is available. Also, that for some reason every single fuck*ng person stradles the turn lane at Washington Blvd and 10th St blocking me from going straight. I can't see any reason why ever car drives smack dab over the line instead of moving completely into the lane. I've turned right there many times myself. The turn lane isn't haunted or anything. What the hell people?

Can I give a general shout-out here to "food that tastes funny in a way that makes you expect fermentation, even if that's unlikely?" Eww!

I'm not really gripped by any Pat-like anger at the moment (except at myself), but I will nominate as an all-time favorite my white-knuckling rage at people who don't know how to get through a cafeteria line, who treat it like a magical mystery that must be navigated extremely slowly and carefully, in a ritualistic manner, lest the Food Gods revoke their bounty. And inevitably whatever I want is at the end of the line, too. Fuckers, indeed!

I'm kind of intrigued by the idea of a maple syrup flavored liqeur.

Isn't there a drink called a Lumberjack or something that is Jagermeister and Maple Syrup?  I'm sure I can google this, but I prefer to sometimes mis-remember things that amuse me.

OK, to go with Ash -

Who puts the air intake of a low vehicle (minivan) near the BOTTOM of the engine compartment? Thing sucked water right into the cylinders. DESIGN WITH FUNCTIONALITY IN MIND. MAYBE SOME DAY THERE WILL BE SOME WATER ON THE ROAD.

I spent Friday on a flooded rural detour (the main, paved road was flooded so of course we all went down the flooded back road) with three overflowing streams to ford at 3 - 3.5 feet of moviing muddy water. The rest of the road was OK, 75% of that was 2 feet deep or so. The main concern was that the water was moving and I didn't want to go with it. There was no choice in the matter, I had to take the Jeep 4x4 to rescue the wife from the flooded minivan and get my kid and another kid to the other side of the main flooded road. GOD MAKE IT STOP RAINING. FRIDAY WAS CONSECUTIVE DAY 42 OF RAIN ON OAHU.

I can still picture the frantic woman in the BMW rolling down her window as we were going by slowly in the deepest part of one of the overflowing streams - as she cried out "my car died!" in the 3 feet or so of water, our slow moving vehicle pushed a little wave into her open window. Couldn't stop, though, I was afraid if I didn't keep the gas on the water could get too far into the tailpipe and stop the jeep. Hopefully she got some help but she definitely screwed up the traffic in a really bad spot. MAKE BETTER DRIVING CHOICES, PEOPLE.

So everyone lived and the minivan lived too. It's actually quite funny to take the plugs out, hit the starter, and watch fountains of water dancing out of your engine. And my mobile mechanic and good buddy Jamie let me keep my $72.50 for his hour of time.

Is it really terribly wrong to find this funny? My moral compass points to yes, but damn. 'A little wave'.

Screech (http://www.newfoundlandlabrador.com/history/screech.asp) (Newfoundland rum) ends up tasting like this. It's fairly dark, so it's got the caramel flavours, and it seems to be oak barrel aged, giving it a woody flavour. There's also 'The Canuck', a cocktail made with rye whiskey, lemon juice, maple syrup, and bitters. Maybe it's unpatriotic, but I haven't had the guts to try that one yet.

Pat Moment:  Don't fuck*ng resize my browser window...  I use Firefox with Tabs going hog wild and when you do that it fucks up my browsing regimen.  I have an obsessive browsing addict schedule to keep you Web Designing fucks.

Oh also, screw people that use the faux word "irregardless".  I don't care if Webster's added it from common usage, it still is a needless word.  We already have a word that means what you're looking for.. it's "regardless".  Why the hell would you add Ir to it?  To sound more erudite?  Fuck that and fuck you.  You can't be without without regard, that means you have regard for it.  You fucks.

whew.. I'm done now.

It was in a little different of a place but I found it (Web Features -> Advanced for anyone taking notes), thank you!

You know, it never occurred to me to even look, I am getting slow and decrepit in my advanced age like Elvis or Jesus.

I think they rearranged the Options in 1.5 so I guess you have an older version. Regardless, there's a lot of good stuff in that window like not letting sites fuck with your right-click menu. That'll teach them to try and stop me from Saving Image As

It's been mentioned a number of times on this board that the language is going to change irregardless of what we feel about it.  But rage on little buddy, because righteous indignation is nothing if not entertaining to the dispasionate observer.

Edit:  Hmmm, interesting, the spell checker dislikes the word faux in your original post.  Misterqueue why do you want to change the language?  Can't you just use the proper word fake?

Faux (http://www.achewood.com/index.php?date=05142004)

Er anyway.. I'm all for living language.  Hell, approximately 1/5th of the words I use aren't even cromulent, but what bothers the hell out of me is needless addition in the name of false elocution.  Regardless already means what they want it to mean by adding Ir.  That's what bothers me.

I have a little javascript link that I keep in my bookmarks bar for when someone moves or resizes my browser window, labled "resize":

Code: [Select]
javascript:moveTo(640,0);window.resizeTo(850,screen.availHeight-40)

The first set of coordinates are how far over the window starts (I have a 1440x900 widescreen display, so YMMV) and the second is how big to make the window (change it to 1024x768 if you prefer, but I like the added height - the "availHeight-40" leaves just enough room for the windows taskbar when it un-auto-hides).

Also, did you know that in Firefox you can select what you want javascript to be able to do?

Tools > Options > Content > Enable Javascript (checked) > Advanced (next to Javascript) > Allow scripts to... > Move or Resize Existing Windows (uncheck)

Ta-da.

Yeah, there's something far more irritating about the misuse of language if the user thinks it's making him sound more intelligent, compared to violations of standard usage for the sake of convenience, or even laziness, that get adopted generally.

I just heard a misuse that irks me in a tv commercial.  Someone said something was "going ballistic" to mean it was going crazy, flipping out, where "going ballistic" really means falling asleep, getting tired, etc.

I.e. ballistic trajectory - when a missle is no longer under power and is falling.

But a person is not normally under a ballistic trajectory, is he? Most of the time a person is standing or sitting or lying on a surface. Perhaps when you have "gone ballistic" you have hurled yourself into the sky with a single explosive exertion and achieved from that point forward a ballistic trajectory.

(note: obviously none of this applies if your primary occupation is to plummet.)

I don't know if ballistic really means to fall. I think it just means that the object in question is no longer being powered to move and will not be changing it's current course. It is only moving with it's current momentum and I suppose gravity. A ballistic missile shoots up really high into the air (like sub-orbit or something) gets on the right course then shuts down and just falls with it's momentum and gravity to it's target. It can't change direction or alter it's course.

So the term "going ballistic" would make more sense if it was describing a determined/stubborn person, someone who is not easily deterred or changed.

It doesn't matter what makes sense.  It matters what people use it to mean.

I propose that hereafter we immediately lock any thread when it becomes a debate over prescriptive vs. descriptive grammar.

What about search boxes on websites that do search the site that they were placed on but do an incredibly shitting job of it? Like forum searches that won't let you filter by sub-forum. Civfanatics, I am looking at you.

I think that lockin prescriptive/descriptive grammar threads in general is a good idea, but since this is explicitly a thread about being pedantic and dickish about tiny things, ala Pat, I'll allow it here. Go nuts, kids.
