It is a new month, and with that new month comes new insight into the world of Achewood.
I just want to give Pat a big ol' hug.
Seriously, 99% of our daily trips can be taken via flyweight recumbent bicycle or gravity-sensible skitter-carts.
(good old 56k dialup is all the sensible Internet user needs, so long as images are turned off, as they should be in pretty much all cases)

As ever, Chris's entry is a lot more interesting than most 'real' blogs. He has a certain turn of phrase which I'm sure has been discussed before.
-
Pat should use a car that runs on pretentiousness. OOOH BURN.

Pat should use a car that runs on pretentiousness. OOOH BURN.
Like that car on the Simpsons, which runs on that dude's sense of self satisfaction? Flip, if you invented that car Prog-Rock bands wouldn't need gigantic sword shaped planes anymore. It would just be too much.
-
Pretentiousness IS the cleanest burning fossil fuel after all.
However, everyone knows which is the most efficient one. Everyone can understand this.
-
Yeah, my commute which takes 20 minutes at 65mph can easily be made on a bike. Or maybe I could just hop on one of the many buses that only run in the opposite direction.

It's all been written, especially by The Onion.

Clearly the answer here is to move closer. Any moron with half a brain can see that you're not acting very locally by living so far away.
I know what you're going to say "Oh the housing market is too expensive/crime-riddled for me where I work." Then clearly you need to find a new job in a reasonable living environment. </Pat>

Actually it would be cheaper for me to live closer to work but where I am now the SO can walk to her job. It just boggles my mind that the buses headed away from the city all run empty because they're out of service. I'm not the only reverse-commuter in the area, am I?

Anger powered cars? If it's a beautiful sunny day and you're driving a top-down car with a gorgeous lady at your side down the motorway, you'd suddenly run out of power! In gridlocked traffic, the slightest tap of the accelerator would send you into the car in front!
This may be covered in the article: I never actually read it. But now I will.

I actually hear you there. STL has quite possibly the shittiest bus system outside of Norway (Note: I do not know if Norway's bus system is shitty or not, it just... it seems like it would be in my mind; but then I'm vaguely insane so don't take my word for it. I am sorry about this Norway.)
I live in the downtown area and work way out in the sticks (mostly because the sticks are strangely more expensive to live in AND I can't fuck*ng stand the sticks.) Most of the buses come INTO the city and thus if I were to do such as a bus system it would take me so long to get to work that it would be quite ridiculous; and verse vica in the evening.
As a result I just try and drive a 4-cyl as little as intrusively as possible. At least the highways are clear going my way each day I guess.
-
Damn. 56k, that's just...damn. I'm still indignant that I don't have wireless in my dorm (and that it's against The Rules to set up your own network, so don't even suggest it; I've already considered it.)
I think all breaks should be composed of pumice-fortified soap; maybe we could all start wearing shoes with pumice-fortified soles.
Please note "'hygiene' products": Pat is such a fuck*ng hippie.
-
Pat is the kind of guy who buys ecohealthytelligent organic local-micro-brand vegetables and then hits them with a can of Raid before eating them.
All is summarized therein.

Norway (at least Oslo) has a decent subway and light rail service with some excessively (http://www.flickr.com/photos/frances_graydon/12492935/in/set-815802/) cool (http://www.flickr.com/photos/frances_graydon/12492920/in/set-815802/) stations. I bet Trollhättan has pretty lousy bus service, but that's even in Sweden. Sorry to be so literal.

Most cities in these United States have rather craptastic systems of public transportation, due to exceedingly poor urban planning. For instance, there is a shopping centre (Target + Barnes & Noble = I'M SO THERE) basically at the end of my street at home, but in order to get there, I have to cut through two office building parking lots, a meadow/tiny wooded area, and a very high (12-ish feet, I'd say) plastic fence, -- the gate through which is often closed, requiring me to muster all my strength to heave it open -- not to mention two or three residential streets with no sidewalks but with quite a bit of car traffic. This is pretty much unacceptable, in my opinion, but it's the way of (this part of) the world.
P.S. -- I win the prize for the longest, most rambling sentence ever.
-
Hobot's post is giving me a Pat attack. I fuck*ng hate that kind of thing. I need to go lie down now.

Most cities in these United States have rather craptastic systems of public transportation, due to exceedingly poor urban planning.
DC has admitted that the metro system was conceived assuming that people would commute into the city in the morning and out in the evening. People needing to get from one suburb to another wasn't even considered during planning as it was so unlikely that none of the planners even thought of it.
But now so many jobs are in what were once considered exurbs that the entire metro system is useless to most people because it doesn't extend far enough out. And the exurbs either have no buses at all or can only afford to run them during rush hour and only one way. So forget about taking the public transit into the office on a weekend or for 2nd shift. And god forbid you want to run errands after work or on weekends because buses don't go to shopping centers. Oh, and btw it costs $7 one way.
-
god damn you people.
charlotte has no public transportation, other than buses. which don't stop anywhere near my house.
the nearest book store is a 10 minute drive away.
the good record store is downtown-- about an hour away.
the slightly worse record store is 30 minutes away.
I hates it. I hates it.
of course, just as I'm moving away, they're building a big cool shopping thing near me, where there will be bookstores, coffeeshops, and an "Art" movie theater. the movie theater is complete-- it kicks ass.
-
Speaking of DC - I actually do live in a suburb right at the edge of the city (like I am ten blocks from the border) and commute into the city. The situation for which the system was designed. It takes me 20 minutes to drive, at least 3 times that long by Metro.
I was stubbornly, Pat-ish-ly carless till well into adulthood - I didn't learn to drive till i was in my 30s. I lived in some places where only a Patlike fanatic would go without a car. But I am old now. I only have so many minutes left of my life - I can't waste 80 of them per day to take Metro instead of the car. That's 80 of them assuming all goes well. Given that Metro has only the vaguest idea of how to run a subway, that's a rash assumption.
And don't get me started on bicycles. In my ignorant youth I actually commuted by bike down Mass Ave in Cambridge into Boston. I now realize that this only seemed reasonable because of my youthful assumption that I was immortal. The people who commute by bike around here are either insane or suicidal, or both. It takes all my willpower not to stop the car and get out and yell at them.
ARGH. OK, Wom-pat will stop thinking about this subject NOW.
-
I really appreciate how Vancouver actually has made it a city mandate to make pedestrian traffic its top priority (http://www.city.vancouver.bc.ca/commsvcs/cityplans/transportation/fundementals.htm). They have actually been reducing capacity on some downtown streets. Then again, it is basically a city that is at least half-full of Pats (or full of half-Pats). That kind of gets annoying when the organic and wheat-free forces get too strong, but the car traffic is noticeably less hostile than Toronto's (which is apparently way more pedestrian-friendly than a lot of US cities already).
-
Toronto! Toronto was the loveliest place to live without a car. OK, so I lived like an eight block walk from work. Maybe my memories are a bit rose-colored. OK, yeah, there was one street where the right word for the traffic was 'hostile.' But the public transit was so lovely. Oh, except for the strike, I guess... OK, time to stop thinking about this one too.
-
Man, I kind of hate public transportation. The bus makes me want to put a bullet in my mouth, I haven't set foot on one since I started driving.
When I have to go into the city, I usually drive to the subway. The subway is alright, it looks spooky and has musicians playing sometimes. Some stations have interesting kinds of art, little bronze sculptures, mosaics. Years ago it used to be serious hoboland, but Rudy Guiliani gassed them all. Plus, if the undercover police don't see you, you can drink a flask on the trains without getting a summons.
It's pretty slow at night, but it's always an adventure. You know, actually, sometimes taking the subway is incredibly surreal. Sometimes you see some pretty weird shit. And if you're alone, at the end of the trip you realize that there is basically no way to discern whether the things you've seen were real or hallucinations. Like for instance, one time I saw this huge dude, probably mildly schizophrenic, wandering around the platform, singing to himself, staring people in the eyes, and no one was reacting to him. Probably because he was extremely spooky and intimidating, but the ride was done, there was no way to ever tell whether or not he actually existed.
It was a pretty long wait for a train - probably 2AM or so, always slow at that time - and he came up to me exposing his lazy eye and he pointed towards the tunnel. "I heard dey started a fire on da tracks. Das'stupid 'cause if you do that shit, you know ya gonna get caught." And then he paced away to go stare at some other people.
If you are accompanied by other people, they're always like, "Yeah, I saw that too," and just totally shit all over your fun. Subway adventures are always much better ridin' dolo.
-
"Subway Adventures" sounds like the title to some seedy back alley Tiajuana bible produced in the 40's.
...I'm just sayin' is all.

ok, there is too much Pat in this thread.

Little Nephew (http://charleysmuckles.blogspot.com/) is sounding more and more like that Kornfeld dude from The Onion with every update.
-
It's quite a shock to go from reading Little Nephew's blog to that of Mr. Bear, and to realise that they are written by the same fellow.
Damn, I love that Lyle "aint' even got a fn computer," but nevertheless purchased an iPod.
-
I'm not sure I want to click on 'Little Nephew lays it bare.'
Can we look forward to Wacky Hijinks from Mr Bear's new pub?
-
My favorite here is the fact that Lyle's update is simply titled "Lyle" in the link on the mainpage.
With Lyle, there needs no extrapolation for he is Lyle. Lyle!
Also: "angling at the Crab and Pickle" sounds far more salacious than it should I suspect.
Further Also: "Much grot tha booty on" Serious.
-

I don't think you ever have to worry with LN. But the time you've deciphered what the hell he's saying any potential for offense has long since evaporated.
I'm assuming Mr. Bear is going to end up with customers who are significantly roudier than he anticipates. Like Lyle.

All de day long Charley scrubbz tha flo'z, fillz up the wooden tonzil-scrapah's wit-what you stir yo' coffee, even risin' up thru de ranks at Stahbukkszibbit to show a lady he can true keep he bond or promiz[...]
I be cold from tha 1920s all so crisp and chazte.
What blows my mind is the elegent fusion of LN's over-tha-top EBoNiXczl and his corny, shitty-novella derived concept of romance. I love this blog update so much.
-
Ain't no haberdasher as dapper as me, I be so crisp, so chaste!
(So crisp and so chaste-chaste!)
-
Perhaps I've mentioned this before, but LN's blog literally hurts my eyes. Something about going from his garish red background to the delicate white and greens of Achewood.com always makes my eyes go twinchy for a few seconds. I wonder if this is intentionally built into the design so as to make the Little Nephew character THAT MUCH MORE IRRITATING.
-
Turbo, it's funny, I was just thinking that today, and yes, my eyes also hurt after about a second or two, so much so that I just copied and pasted into a text window and read it there. I'm going to have to read these in a feed reader from now on, I think.
-
I shouldn't have a problem, since I use Bloglines, but for some reason it always truncates LN's posts, so I have to read them on the blog. For the longest time I thought he just trailed off mid-sentence in nearly every post.
-
The contrast between LN's dialect and his relatively sedate romantic goals (getting stoned on a blanket with Molly at midnight and reading poetry?) is absolutely delightful.
Also, Nice Pete is too furious to write but not too furious to blog-update. Go, Pete!
-

It's not just you. I use Sage, the RSS reader for Firefox, and it does the same thing with LN.

I'm really interested in the idea of Corny renaming a pub and collecting renaming suggestions from the other Achewoodites.
Ray coming up with really glam over-the-top stuff, Liebot coming up with something dark and awful, Beef coming up with something whimsically utilitarian... Lyle, perhaps, being racist against an obscure ethnic group or an ethnic group upon which racism is not usually leveed? Let ALONE whatever the hell Phillipe would contribute to such a debate.
Pat trying to shove him into making it a health food stand.
Seems to write itself.

"Le Bistro Debonair"
"Club Baby Seal"
"Basically A Bar"
"The Gargantuan Swede"
"HUUUGS!"
In that order.

Ray: O'Reillys (He probably associates all pubs with Irish dudes)
Liebot: The Scat ('Scat meant 'place of honour' in ancient Gaelic')
Beef: Basically A Place To Forget Depression
Lyle: The Chinaman Hunter (You actually do get pubs named like that in England)
Phillipe: Ermmmm...
Pat: A Bad Place
Not very good, I'll admit. Read Q's list, it is mooch better.
-
I can only hope that Mr. Bear goes Olde Scole and picks a name that can easily be represented by a picture on the sign by his illiterate customers. Something like The Nag and Weasel or The Troll's Head.
-
See, I imagine Ray approaching it from a cluelessly-yet-shamelessly capitalistic angle and coming up with a name such as an airport bar or a low-cost family steakhouse chain would go for.
Something in the "Hilariggan McBrew's Olde-Time Drinkporium and Steaktastrophe" vein.
Offering to put up the initial investment if Corn'll ditch the pickled eggs and at the most fried Mars bars and serve... loaded potato skins and nachos and moderately-priced cuts of beef with awkwardly-Austrailian names and so on. "Spaghetti and Austrailian Rules Meatball" or something.
-

No no no... think Lyle and Ray's Perfect Jays. He'd want to "change the market". I'd see him picking something that SOUNDS classy and wondrous to him but really means absolutely nothing.
It would also do amazingly well, because he is Ray.
-
Vlad would pick the best name.
it would be so romantic, and suave
and they would misunderstand what he was saying, because of the accent.
LN will steal Molly, and Roast Beef will "Cap" him and then dump Molly.
this will be when Roast Beef shows his balls.
-
Who called it? Everyone called it (http://corneliusbear.blogspot.com/2006/05/everyones-pub-namer.html)!
Huuuuugs!
My favorite:
2. The Butter Place! (Philippe)
I cannot use this.
-
The butter place!
But really, he should use The Dude and Catastrophe. It's genius. And it is what pubs often cause, right?
-
hm..
I think only ray's is not really dactylic.
But, wouldn't you want a dactyl for a pub name?
Damn. I am already missing Latin class. this is lame.
-
So: how stoned was Ray when he made his suggestion?
I would name a pub "The Dude and Catastrophe," and if I saw a pub named The D&C, I would visit. What would the shingle be? Roast Beef totally freaking out as his computer explodes?
Another nominee for the winner: Lyle's suggestion, and Mr. Bear's comment about taking his pornography too early and too often.
-
Lyle took his porn just like his women.
and whiskey.
damn I want to see his childhood.
I imagine that it was perfect. he was a child genius, straight a's in school, etc.
then he started with the porn and whiskey.
-
The dude and catastrophe is so good that if I had the money, I would purchase rights to the name and start my own pub with this very name; even if I was the only one in there.
Actually, come to think of it, ESPECIALLY if I was the only one in there. Then people would say, "Where's the catastrophe?" when they came in, and I would look back at them; responding in a horrified whisper, "ALL AROUND ME!"
The idea of a cow's udder violating a buttock isn't as horrifying to me as it should be.. while not a happy idea at 8:30am per se I am still left to wonder if I've been livin' the Lyle a bit too long because of this fact.
Thank you comic-related blog for making me question the "difficulties with my lifestyle"
-
Mr Bear's got one of the best blog entries ever. I'm dying here at work; a tit violating an arse is so... *unnecessarily* filthy and convoluted (think of the logistics involved!); Phillipe's trademark exclamation mark... actually all the blogs are plain killing lately, even LN's, which I never cared for.

Not so convoluted as you may think. I always thought lady cows had lots of little willies when I was a young'un.

this is a common problem with blogger feeds, but LN's is the worst of them all, for some reason.

it took me way too long to realize that a cow's tit is an udder.
so I was imagining a human-style breast trying to enter an ass.
and I was confused.

Okay, so what's so wrong with 'The Butter Place!'?
You could hire waitresses with really hot bodies but unfortunate faces.
-
Actually, I think that combining these pub names might produce a nice result. How about 'The Auld Butter Teats And Ass'?
-
Someone should start a poll with the pub names, without the final comic option. I hate the comic option.
I ain't gonna be the one that makes it...

I thought "tomato tennis" would somehow involve breasts.
-
Yeah, sure, we shouldn't take advice from a cartoon cat, but Ray is right about badminton. It doesn't hurt your arm or make you as crazy as tennis does, it is just fun and good exercise. But I could never get anyone to play it with me. What is wrong with people? Why are they not more like cartoon cats?
I'll skip the tomato tennis though, thanks.
-
Tomato Tennis: OMG I have a new favorite sport.
~Paul
-
Made up sports are fun. I play urban golf (http://www.urbangolf.org) from time to time.
-
Ray and Wombat are right. Badminton is hell of fun and surprisingly challenging.
Which reminds me, it's about time to get the net up.
-
Man, now I want to go fly a kite. Even without the help of the particular game of golf!
-
I thought that the shuttlecock travels faster than any other projectile in any sport.
Dunno, though, never seen it played.
-
There is also that version played where they kick the shuttlecock with their feet. That's pretty amazing to watch.
As for the fasted projectile - doubtful it's going anywhere near as fast as a jai alai ball or even a hockey puck. Or a line drive down the first base line.
-
Badminton played in the backyard is a frolic of fun.
Hey, our backyard version is as fast and cutthroat as we are capable of. Although Mrs. West usually beats me because she is quicker and more co-ordinated than I. I am essentially a big, slow, galumphing white boy.
-
Okay lets see what Wikipedia has to say:
Shuttlecock - 186mph
Jai-alai - 180mph+
Line drive - n/a
Inconclusive...
Further research...
Well, the maximum speed for a batted baseball cannot be greater than the sum of the speeds of the pitch and the bat swing. So if a 102mph fastball was met with the sweetest part of the bat swung at 75mph by Vladamir Guerrero, the fastest we'd be looking at is probably about 175mph, right off the bat. This considers that my estimate for bat speed is accurate: I have the feeling that a 75mph swing is a little generous. The fastest swing might top out around 65mph. I'm going to give the baseball last place.
Perhaps we can cheat, and abandon the rules of baseball, use a hollow alluminum bat, and some hollow, compressable ball with a hardend surface. Perhaps this setup with the strongest of professional players could reach 200mph+.
"An electronically measured ball velocity of 188 mph was recorded by Jose Ramon Arieto at the Newport Jai Alai, RI, on Aug 3, 1979."
-Guinness Sports Record Book 1990-91. Sterling Publishing Co., 1990: 133.
This page also says:
"Jai alai is a popular game for gambling. The betting is similar to betting on hoss races. Wagers are taken for the win, place and show. Then there are such wagers as daily doubles, quinela and perfectas that can be put on each match. Daily doubles are on the 3rd and 4th events and the 10th and 11th."
Another page mentions betting $10,000 on Jai alai games.
Interesting.
So the wrap up:
Max Jai Alai ball straight out of the cesta - 188mph
Max shuttlecock off a raquet - 186mph
Max baseball off a wooden bat ~ 175mph
Max speed of hockey puck - 106mph
-

I'd rather try to catch the shuttlecock than any of the others, though. Good research.

How have I never heard of this "Jai Alai"? I looked it up, and it sounds completely made-up.

It wasn't that simple, I had to go through like 15 pages and do my own math to come up with the comprehensive list.
I went to bed early to sleep off this wisdom tooth swelling and woke up fully rested in the middle of the night, had to kill some time. Man, it's still pretty swollen. Didn't even get any vic's or codiene, I'm forced to make my own drugs. They're working pretty well, though.

There's a famous book on information ubiquity that notes that sometime in the late 90s people's mental model of the internet shifted from "I wonder if ________ is on the internet?" to "Everything is on the internet."
And so it is.

http://raysmuckles.blogspot.com/ Badminton? This so relevant that I am on topic with the off topic.
I just played Tomato Tennis with my dog. He did not get the rules. He kept trying to catch the tomatos in his mouth, which gave me Tomato Tennis Points. I scored three out of five which is quite good going, I'd say.
He didn't want to play when it was his turn to throw; he demonstated this by eating, and not throwing, the tomato.

do people eat whole tomatos?
I can dig things made with tomatos, but not the actual tomato. tomatos are good in a sauce, or salsa, but not in whole slices. maybe I am insane?

I can't eat a tomato like an apple, but some people can. I enjoy sliced tomatoes (like the kind you see on burgers; circular-like) with Classic French dressing (vegetable oil, tarragon wine vinegar, salt & pepper, and garlic) and chopped fresh basil. An optional addition is shredded mozzarella cheese (which I opt out of, since I am a crazy vegan).

They have to be good tomatoes, nice and fully ripe and sweet. The kind that either come just at the height of field tomato season, or those foofoo little on-the-vine ones from the greenhouse. Then they are awesome with just a little salt.
Also caprese salad, which is slices of ripe tomato alternating with slices of unripened mozarella balls (bocconcini) and basil leaves wedged between, drizzled with olive oil, salt, and a dash of balsamic vinegar. Basically what Hobot described but the italian version. I grew up around a lot of italians but they never made this for me. Bastards.

The tomatos are heavy on the vine in Houston. Someone told me not to plant before Memorial Day here in Utah. This is cause for serious depression. I gotta get someone to airlift me in some tomatos. Seriously. Ripe tomato with just a little salt is basically the best thing on earth.

do people eat whole tomatos?

I agree completely. I don't like the texture of the raw tomato, plus if you put them on a sandwhich, the taste overpowers the whole effin' thing!
I won't deny that they're a valueable fruit which I enjoy, but I don't even like the cherry tomatos in a salad.
I have just learned that I am extremely inclined to type "tomoto" for some reason.

Paul, these tomato-haters are mad. And sad. Can't something be done?

Caprese Salad Recipe
This is the best way I can think of to enjoy fresh, ripe tomatoes, and one of my favorite things to get at 'real' italian restaurants. Also, prosciutto wrapped melons.

I wanna buy Beef's zine.

Men, men, men. Why do you hate your prostate so?

Nautical fiction! Also, what I expect to be Dickens-bashing (which is hopefully just as painful as it sounds)! If this dream is realised, in print form, I will most definitely purchase it.

RE: Beef's Zine
Holy heck does that sound like an awesome zine. I would love to read that interview with Ray about his ability to freestyle. The 4 page interview with Teodor would be nice, too. I can't say I would really like to read the interview with Pat conducted in Pat's house. If this was made available in the store for less than five dollars, I would buy it. More than five? Ray had better be able to freestyle real good.

I hope it has got Phillipe Times.

I think it'd be pretty tough to sing a Neopolitan song while attempting to use Illustrator on a laptop, but maybe Stad speaks from experience here.
At least I know I wouldn't remember the next verse while trying to draw Ray's glasses just right.
(Is there any irony in the fact that Ray is done in Illustrator himself? Has he, like HAL 9000 become sentient and suddenly appreciative or irony? Will he open the pod bay doors?
