Title: Let me fulfill your fantasy (football)
Post by: Carlos del Vaca on August 28, 2006, 08:14:55 pm
Would there be sufficient interest in a TOUAMB fantasy football league, using Yahoo's free game?  Probably a list-based automated draft, as we don't have much time left and I doubt that many of us would be into a live draft.

Put me down as a strong maybe.

I haven't played FF for several years, nor have I had much inclination to.  I've steadily been becoming more and more disinterested in sports.  However, there's nothing like gambling or fantasy teams to stimulate an interest in sports.

Is this American football or football football? I'm guessing the former but I can hope.

GRIDIRON!!
Two of the greatest features of American society combined:  committee meetings and extreme violence!

I could be convinced to do this, provided it is a reasonable (sub-14) number of teams.  I'm already in another Yahoo league so it would not be so much work to be in another.

With only three of us interested, I'll take that as a collective no.

I will, however, set up a pro pick 'em pool on Yahoo, and any who want can come on in.  Winners only, no spread, confidence rankings to take into account.

I would like to have been in, but not only do I have less idea than ever what's going on in your football (what with the TV licensing changing over here so I never get to see it), but I haven't played any of the fantasy leagues so I don't know what's involved there anyway. Seems like it'd be a bit like those people who decide they do fancy a game of poker, and then ask you how to play it the entire game.

I am morally against fantasy football, but this idea is one that I'd toast to.  In fact, I've already joined!

I can't figure out how to make picks once I get to my legend.  If anyone can help before the game I will gladly play, if not I must quit I guess.

I'd tell you, K, but I don't see what the ledgend is.  Gotta click the name of the group, click your own "pick set name," and just throw it down.

Perhaps you can cut the loss of possible points on the first game and still register late.

I thought the game started at 8:30 CST, but it was EST.  I will play next week if you two did not do that well, or maybe I will just play anyways.  Can the person in charge let me vote for this sunday/monday's games, or is that a Yahoo! thing once you set up the league (and time to vote)?
Title: Re: Let me fulfill your fantasy (football)

You guys are just being silly. Football games are played on Sundays, not Thursdays. Who would schedule football against what's historically real TV's strongest night?
Title: Re: Let me fulfill your fantasy (football)
Post by: Carlos del Vaca on September 08, 2006, 02:02:33 pm
OK, I have adjusted it so that each pick is due 5 minutes before each game.  So if you missed last night's, you should still be able to go in and pick this Sunday and Monday's games.

Also, I set it so that your lowest week of the season will be dropped from the season totals, so if anyone is totally screwed in the first week, you won't be completely ruined for the year.

Still time to get in on this, as your low point total week for the season will be dropped from the overall total.  So if you missed week 1, no great loss.  So go make picks now!  NOW!

Go to http://football.fantasysports.yahoo.com/pickem  (you'll need a Yahoo ID, obviously)
Click "Create or Join Group", then "Join Private Group"
Group ID:  52476
Password:  smuckles
Follow all the other instructions, should be pretty straightforward.

Once you're in, click your pick set name under "My Private Groups" on the front page.  Then "My Picks," and find week 2 and click "Edit."

Pick who you think will win each game.  No point spreads, just straight-up winner.
Then use the "confidence" drop-downs for each game.  The game you are most absolutely sure your pick will win should get a 16.  The game you think is the biggest toss-up should get a 1.  Rank all the games accordingly.

The confidence rank you give each game is the number of points you'll get if your pick is correct.

Also, fill in the tiebreaker stuff at the bottom before you submit.

I won week 1.  Yay, me.

Aww man, I've been doing the confidence rankings backwards.  Now I gotta go flip 'em all.

Ok, now I know what's up:  this week is mine, kidz.

Mannn, it was only my 2 point pick, but that Lions game, Kitna carelessly threw away my oppurtunity for a perfect week.  Lousy favorite teams.  Anyway, this week still hangs in the balance.

I wish calling the points would count for something more than just tiebreaking.

Too many obvious games this week.  I missed my 1- and 2-pointers, and have only 3 on tonight's game.  I figured that would win the week going away, but noooooooooo.

One could have made a shitload of money this week taking the Titans and the points.

This should probably be in its own thread, but is anyone interested in a fantasy hockey league?  Pedro and I would be totally in if someone else did the setting-up thing.  I've not done fantasty sports before but Pedro has.  Does it matter that the season's begun as long as we all start at the same time?

The Chargers and LaDainian sure were fun to watch tonight.

I'm generally and AFC East kinda guy, but I've always enjoyed the rivalries in the AFC West.  Broncos, Chiefs, Chargers, Raiderzz.  Fun Stuff.

Also, the KC Chiefs are the subject of one of the funniest TV commercials EVAR!  Great Googly Moogly!

OK, anyone who gives a crap about football, who should I start for my fantasy team this week?
Trent Green (KC) vs. Denver tomorrow, or Matt Hasselbeck (Seattle) vs. Green Bay Monday night?

On the one hand, Green Bay's pass defense is much shittier than Denver's.  On the other, it'll be Hasselbeck's first game back from injury.

Trent Green is still shaking out some cobwebs from his stay on the DL, so I'd go with Hasselbeck.

Got to go Hasselbeck, Denver's d is too strong.  Green just came back from the DL last week, and one of these guys is a Super Bowl corterback, on a better team (maybe not playing like it now, though).  Plus, Green is playing a tough divisional rival.

Why do you have an opinion about American football?

On that subject, does anyone have any kind of League Pass or Direct TV or anything?

I watched a little bit of the game on NFL Network last night.  Seemed pretty run-of-the-mill.  Bryant Gumbel seems a bit rusty as a commentator, though.  He called too much of the game like it was a radio broadcast--"Johnson turns it outside!"  Yes I can SEE THAT, ass.

Jesus Cock I wish I had seen this. Anyway, I'm in first in my family fantasy football league, going into the playoffs. Of course, I drafted Tomlinson, so how fair is that?
Title: Re: Let me fulfill your fantasy (football)
Post by: Lister on December 18, 2006, 01:07:25 am
I'm pretty happy with the way my season has turned out so far.  I drafted 18th in a leage of 20, but entered the playoffs as the 3 seed.  I've had a pretty inconsistent day, so I really can't figure out if I'll be able to win in round 1 or not.  For instance, Bulger did nothing (thanks, Oakland, for not stopping the run) but I was against Eli Manning who did nothing and threw two picks.

Of course the problem with 20-person leagues is that I'm forced to decide between mediocre starters every week and basically get screwed if someone's #3 never gets thrown to, but that's what makes it "fun," right?

Your drafting of Tomlinson reminds me of 2004, when one guy had Peyton Manning and T.O. on his team.  Steamrolled us all and went undefeated... then in week 16 (playoffs) Owens got hurt and Manning shut it down.  I almost felt sorry for him.

Oh, and it seems that the Law of Defenses is still holding true.  I went with Jacksonville's D instead of Tennessee's today, and of course Tennessee's defense/special teams scored twice on Jacksonville, taking me out of the "low score bonus" points even though the defense didn't technically give those points up...

I hate that rule.

A league of 20? That just doesn't seem fun to me. Also, I've got LT and Frank Gore; Holt, TO, Walker & Ward (although I picked him up after he got hurt); and San Diego's defense. However, I've got Rex Grossman, who has had probably more negative-point games than anyone ever has in fantasy football. Also, he had a -10 point game, which I believe is unprecedented.

LT is not fair, I agree.  Luckily he is not my problem until next week, possibly.

First round winner!

Now: do I pick up Garcia and play him instead of Bulger, who seems to be fading?

The Eagles go to Dallas, which may be a tall order.  Cowboys' pass defense ranked 11th in the league (yds/game).

The Rams are at home against the Redskins, who despite their suprising win at New Orleans, are really crappy.  Washington's pass D:  24th in the league.

So I'd stick with Bulger.  (Of course this probably means you should do the exact opposite, as my fantasy team is about to play in the 7th/8th place consolation game in our 10-team league.)

OK, here is a football-pool conundrum for you.

In the two football pools I'm in that are actually for money, I'm in second place in one and third place in the other.  Top three for the season win money in each.  The first is against the spread, one point per correct pick; the latter is a confidence-ranking, winners-only, just like the TOUAMB pool I set up on Yahoo that no one but me plays anymore.

Now, the first pool, a couple years ago I was in first place going into the last week of the season, and rather famously picked something like four winners out of 16 games in the final week to fall to fourth place and out of the money.  I'd have been better off pulling a Costanza--make my picks, and then reverse them all.

So here's the thing:  Do I go for the gusto, and make my best selections in both pools and attempt to win money in them both?  Or do I make more-or-less opposite picks in each pool, so that it's highly likely I'll have a good week in one but not the other, and thus hedge my bets a bit?
Title: Re: Let me fulfill your fantasy (football)
Post by: Lister on December 28, 2006, 09:35:55 am
First: Bulger was the right choice.  I am now in the Super Fantasy Bowl of Fantasy.

Second: I'm going against Tomlinson and the Chargers still have positioning to play for.  Fuck.

As for picking, I'm generally horrible picking games.  If it were me*, I'd put my "locks" in for both leagues, then consider flipping a coin for the others.  However, I did learn something interesting today as far as picking vs. the spread: Unpopular teams beat the spread almost every time.  The Titans, for example, are 11-4 vs. the spread this year.  Apparently this information came from USA Today, but I can't find it on their site.

Random thought: Cleveland at Houston on week 17 is proof that the schedule makers were trying to consolidate meaningless games.

*Note: taking my advice doesn't mean you can blame me for losing real money.  However, I will totally accept a cut if my advice is profitable.  I call this the "Consultant caveat."

In all games and gambling, you gotta dance with the one you brought...

Your strategy has worked this far? Then unless something huge has changed, stick with it.

a.) It has worked up to this point.

b.) If things go wrong, you can at least say "well, I tried how I knew how to try"... as opposed to "why did I try this strange new thing that turned out to suck at the last minute?" You'd have lost on your terms and your only lingering doubts would be about things you're not all that sure of to begin with. Less pain in losing.

Go with what's worked if the field of play hasn't changed, I say.

Yeah, my Super Bowl was last week - I lost by three points, after absolutely dominating our league.

However, on a lighter note - LT set basically every record available to him and got the rushing title, and I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up with the MVP. Plus, the Bolts have home field throughout. Now if my Broncs can emerge victorious from the Fiesta Bowl, my year will be complete.

Playing both football pools straight up was the right move; I finished tied for second in both of them.

Rex fuck*ng Grossman cost me a hundred bucks last night, though.  If the Bears had won I'd have taken second outright in one of the pools.  That guy sucks.

OH MY GODDDDDD.

That was the greatest football game I have ever seen.  Much congrats to Nabu and the rest of the Boise State fan base.

Now, for the reasons I was routing for BSU over OU, despite the fact I go to OU:

My dad was a military brat, who went to school in Hawaii, then went to Law School at the University of Tulsa.  When he moved to the OKC area (right in between OU and OSU) he went to an OU game.  At the game, many of the fans were talking shit to him that he was not a real OU fan, that they had been fans for so much longer, etc., so I was raised to hate OU.  Then, when I was about 8 years old, my dad took me and my sister to an OU-OSU game in Norman (OU).  At the game OSU won (which was there first win in the contest in approximately 15 years), and a 75-80 year old man started talking shit to me.  I still remember this very, very clearly, and have absolutely hated OU since then.  The third main reason that I dislike OU is because about 90% of the state of Oklahoma are huge OU fans.  However, none of them even came close to going to OU, and, now that I live about 2 blocks from campus, I have to have these jerks ruin my town 6 times a year.  Basically it is alright for them to be uneducated pieces of shit who support OU, because they have for a long time, but my dad gets talked shit to for moving here and checking out an OU game.  However, I went to OU because I got a better scholarship and because I am a history major, which is not really a strong point at OSU.  Also, (this might be bad, but) there is a much nicer drug and music scene in Norman.

On to the game.  Me and my dad did not talk for about 3 minutes after the BSU quarterback threw that interception.  Then, on 4th down, the BSU guy lateralled it, while he could have gotten a first down.  My exact quote: "WHAT THE FUCK, NO NO NO, HOLY SHIT HE HAS IT HE HAS IT OH MY GOD YES YES YES"  Then, Peterson (who used to buy weed from my roommate, pretty nice guy) ran for that easy touchdown in overtime.  Then, BSU has a 4th and 2 from and THEY HAVE A WR/RB IN AT QB?????????WTF? NO.  Somehow he makes it, and BSU has the balls to go for two and makes it.

Greatest football game I have ever seen, both because of the great action on the field and because of my hate for OU.  Amazing.

Also, lets cue up some Tweedy:

Statue of Liberty play
Only works once
Don't throw it away

I saw a statue of liberty play, a wr pass play and a hook and ladder play within about 15 minutes all in very crucial points of a game.  That is still unbelievable.

That was the most amazing game I've ever seen - that's one for the ages. I'm so glad I taped that. Now I just need to find someone to remove all the crap and put it on a DVD. I'm babbling, because I can't talk about the actual football right now.

We are all BSU football fans today.

The receiver did the wrong thing, or the quarterback thought that the receiver was supposed to do something else.  It was probably a timing pattern, which means there is like a count and the quarterback throws to a predetermined spot at the predetermined count.  You couldn't see in that shot, but there was a white shirt like 3-5 yards down field.

Either that or it was an awful pass.

This is a bit tangential, but on the subject of "BCS rankings and the bizarro responses they generate": I am extremely pleased that Michigan got blown out of the water. This is not because I am an OSU student; it is because I am an OSU student who is really goddamn sick of the arguments about how Michigan deserved its Championship slot/rematch with OSU, and it was a travesty not to give it to them when they were obviously one of the two best teams in the nation blah blah blah blah blah. I know nothing will shut a dedicated football booster up for that long, but I hope I can point to the Rose Bowl and say "okay, guys, that's two games in which you could have proven to OSU how awesome you were, and you've gone 0 for 2 in them, so can we just move on? Thank you."

I went to Syracuse, where our sporting motto is "since our basketball team is pretty good, we have to pretend that our football team isn't completely terrible, just to be fair"... they were kind of good when Donovan MacNabb was around and that quickly ended upon his pro-ification.

Back on the subject of Fantasy Football, my friends are running a Playoff Fantasy Football League.  They did it last year, and it sounded cool but I didn't really have time to put together my entry before the playoffs started.  Basically you select your roster (2QB, 3RB, 3WR, 2TE, K, DEF) such that you have exactly one player from each playoff team.  Winners are paid out each week through the Super Bowl, and we can enter multiple rosters for $10 each.

This should be a fun exercise.  I think I will have at least one roster which counts on Indy being knocked out in the first round and New Orleans going to the Super Bowl.

Anyone who goes to Syracuse should not give a rat's ass about college football and should instead be a rabid lacrosse booster.  The Gait Brothers, the Powell Dynasty, Roy Colsey, Pat McCabe, Tom Marachek, Jim Brown, 8 or 9 championships since 1980, etc, etc.

Oh, I grew up in one of those very small pockets of the world one might call "Lacrosse Country" to begin with and, sorry, never got into it. The local community college was national junior college champions, like, every third year... my brother's best friend when he was a kid, the dad was the coach and...

Yeah, just could not get into it. Soccer + Hockey + (People Only Seem To Even Know What It Is In Northern New York, Long Island and Suburban Maryland) = not really ever able to capture my imagination. I was raised on the idea that low-minors minor league baseball was the purest form of sport and I could never shake that ingrained assumption.

"It's like hockey, played on a soccer field, with butterfly nets and horrible cripplings every five or six minutes."

Ultimate Fighter dudes go to a lacrosse game and leave ten minutes in because the whole thing's so excruciatingly brutal.

I mean, respect for dudes who can do that. I certainly could not sprint around for an hour straight while dudes hit me as hard as they possibly can with sticks and still have the wherewithall to throw and catch a tiny ball with a tiny net. But, man, it has all the "it's basically pong with attempted murder" watchability problems of... soccer and to a lesser extent, hockey... except with fifty times the attempted murder.

Young men being cut down in their prime in the midst of a friendly competition is thrilling and all but... it's still a ball going back and forth, back and forth and then someone tries to shoot a goal and probably doesn't make it and then it goes back and forth again for a while.

"it's basically pong with attempted murder"

I like that.  My initial problem with lacrosse was that (to my knowledge then) there was no pro league for me to see how it was played (and no Intarweb with video clips) so it wasn't until I ended up in a long-term relationship with a Women's Lacrosse player that I got familiar with it.  I tried out for the men's team the next year, and well, the rest is history.

It does involve a lot of running though.  Although I prefer to think of it as chasing.  Much less boring than endless loops of jogging around the neighborhood.

And it is painful.  But so is the rest of life.

Lost the championship game, because I'd counted on Philly still having something to play for and thus had three players score a total of 1 point 'cause they didn't.  Oh well, it's still not bad, I guess.  Just wish I hadn't wasted Mare's 15 point day.

I seriously hate the college football method for determining a championship.  I mean, seriously.  This is a billion dollar sport and we figure out who's best by fricking voting.  Why not just have them guess numbers from 1-100 and see who's closest?  One Potato Two?  Ouija boards?

There are 31 bowl games to be played this year.  Guess how many games you'd need to determine a 32-team bracket in a tournament?  You could even expand the field by having the top 8 teams get byes and the first round would be play-in games.  40 teams would get bowl games, and each and every one would mean something.

I see two problems: First is it would have to mean eliminating conference championship games, which I'm in favor of anyway.  It just hinders the conferences that have them, frankly.  Second, it would add up to five games for the eventual winner.  That's a lot to add, but to me it just means the best team proved it's the best unequivocably.  No amount of tricks, favorable matchups, or catching teams on a bad day will get you five consecutive wins on neutral fields.

Also: I hate the college overtime system, but that's a further digression and it is late/early.

This is the reason I can't ever pay attention to the college game, other than checking in on my schools (UH and Arkansas) occasionally.

Hell, I'd be happy with a two round playoff with just the top four, but even then you'd probably get some #5's and #6's whining.  I think a three round playoff with the top eight teams is pretty much bulletproof, and is only adding a maximum of two games to the season.

Also: I hate the college overtime system, but that's a further digression and it is late/early.

Ho ho, I must disagree with you here, though.  The college overtime system is brutal and sometime ponderous, but one thing you cannot knock it for is fairness.  That game is going to be settled on the field if it kills us all.  The pro system drives me nuts; I think at a minimum each team should be guaranteed one possession.

This is how it worked in high school and I never understood why they don't scale it up. One possession each followed by sudden-death if necessary.

I mean, even just an eight-team playoff. Any more than three rounds and you're probably radically altering season-length, any less and you're still gonna deal with the occasional year a legit team doesn't get into the mix.

None of "the four big bowls" get screwed, you rotate a championship into one every four years, the semi-finals into two and whoever had the championship last year gets one of the quarter finals the last year and then...

Three other bowls get quarter-finals? Make up new ones if you want or... take the three most tradition laden second-tier bowls if you like? Like... I dunno... the Cotton and the Peach and the Gator Bowl? Whatever you like.

Then, not ONLY do those seven bowls all gain varying degrees of "significance" but... every other bowl is suddenly a bit more viable because they're all pretty much on equal footing as opposed to, like, twenty-eight bowls that mean NOTHING, two that kinda sorta mean a little and one that SHOULD mean everything but doesn't.

Unless you have a more-than-two-team playoff, you've got the worst of both worlds... you've not ONLY lost the old ways of "a lot of bowls potentially matter because the system of bowl match-ups is so goddamn byzantine" but you're also still lacking an actual unified championship like in any other sport.

So, today, the championship game can still be undermined by one or two other "BCS" bowls making the number 3 or 4 team look so good...  or by making an undefeated mid-major team look good by giving them one tantilizing high-profile win at the end of the year... that the "BCS Championship" is functionally meaningless.

I mean, you could even still throw the major conferences a bone insofar as the top eight tournament would be... like... the conference champions from conferences with championship games and then fill it out with the highest ranked teams after that or... all the major conference champions and then fill it out with the highest ranked teams after that or... all the major conference champions and all otherwise undefeated teams and then the highest ranked or...

There's a lot of ways to do it, clearly.

At ANY rate, there'd still be arguements, of course, but at least at that point, you're almost assured that you're not going to go into a championship playoff without the very best three or four teams all in the running and... that's what really matters.

People wanna argue over whether Such and Such U is #8 or #9 in the country, it'll still happen but... it'll harm the legitimacy of a championship volumes less than whether one of the best two or three teams is left out of the equation.

It'd be one of those "healthy debates" as opposed to a bad one.

This is why I love the long haul of the baseball season... you've got 162 games to sift out the good and the bad and... why there should really only be the LCSes and the WS in baseball. The weekly nature of football demands a lengthy playoff system and... the enormity of college basketball does as well.

But you've got 30 teams, you've got 162 games, most questions should be answered.

In basketball or hockey, they've got 82 games, that's more than enough, too.

You know the law: Two teams enter, one team leaves.

Before these NFL playoffs start in a few minutes, I'd like to take this time to present the award for the Touamb Pick 'Em Championship to The Mayor, Mr. Carlos Delvaca.

There was one week where I forgot to finalize my picks, and after that I stopped picking, but even if picks continued, he likely would have won.  Congrats.

In other news, my preseason Superbowl pick was a Manning Bowl, and I still stand by it.  However, I went through the games one by one and decided the most likely outcome will be Ravens vs. Seahawks.

I favor a variation of the NFL OT system.  Basically, sudden death once both teams have had a possession.  None of this short field crap.  Play football on the whole field.

On another note, Indy's offense is freaking scaring me in this first quarter.  They're not getting past New England or Baltimore, but wow are they moving the ball well.

Ravens vs. Seahawks.

I refuse to take such a pessimistic view of life.

Bolts v. Saints - it just feels right.

DITTO'D

The one game I make time to soaker up and it turns into dumb-ass penalties, ball security errors and WHAT THE FUCK DID YOU THINK THE PATS WERE GOING TO SHOOT FOR GOING INTO THE HALF YOU GRIZZLED INCOHERANT BASTARDOS!

Great fuck*ng season right in the crapper.

I guess I'd like to see an Indy - NO super bowl now. At least it'd be an exciting offensive game.

Pats - Bears...boo to that ass.
