Title: Introducing people to Achewood
Post by: vivouk on September 13, 2006, 06:58:46 pm
Do any of you find that your friends just don't get Achewood?

They just don't find it funny.  :(

Is there a way of doing it, or are we just too twisted/odd for everyone else?  :'(

Believe me, I try this too, but the humour is really genuinely one of those "Love or Hate" dealies. For example, I like the style of art very much, but most people I know who've seen it complain that the characters look too much like dogs.

As if this wasn't enough to deter people, the strip is a lot more based on characters and story than accessible one-shot-funny comics, so effort is required to enjoy it at it's best. If you don't like the first 10 strips you read, I doubt it's something you'd want to stick with.

On the other hand, quite a few of my chums love some of Achewood's golden moments which require no previous understanding of the characters. But those are few and far between, and really aren't what Achewood is all about.

Plus, to get it all you've really got to keep tabs on the blogs, which most people wouldn't bother with until they've read a fair amount of strips.

In short: Yes, we're all twisted.

I remember I was on another forum where people posted Achewood strips and I didn't find most of them funny. Then someone posted a Nice Pete strip I found funny, so I decided to look through the archives. At first I sort of I had a sort "meh" feeling about most of them, but as I plowed through the archives I gradually liked it more and more, until I found them absolutely hillarious.
What's odd is that, if I go back into the archives now, I find the early ones just as amusing as the later ones. I just had to adjust to Achewood's peculiar style before I "got it".

Many of my friends enjoy Achewood, and some of them post here.

Many others do not, and some of them are even luddites who think that the internet is just a passing fad.  They are okay too.

Basically people are going to like what they like and it makes little difference to me.

THEIR LOSS

I think it's just the nature of the strip- it's not obvious. I wrote about this a few weeks ago somewhere else:

Quote
It's pretty postmodern in that the guy that writes it usually tries to wrongfoot you. He fucks about with a lot of the conventions of comics/webcomics, so a lot of the strips have a punchline in the middle of the strip, he'll break off from a plot arc to concentrate on something else... He also has some strips that are just not designed to make you laugh. Some of the Roast Beef narrative (which itself is scattered all throughout the 700-odd strips) is utterly heartbreaking and you don't get a joke til about 5 strips later, but that kind of hijinks just makes me love Achewood more.

It's not something that's as immediate as PBF [Perry Bible Fellowship], but once you get into it, you get completely hooked.

 :)

I have one ex who got Achewood fairly fast. She ahsn't exactly kept up on it, but her love for Ray and his sheer classiness somewhat brought us together I think. Apart from that, I have a friend who looked at the odd strip and was amused but  never followed through. And after trying to persuade my brother of it's genius many a time, he finally got hooked when looking through Volume I at christmas a couple of years back, and then proceeded to go home, make a martini and sit and read through the archives.

Eh, who wants to introduce people to Achewood, anyway?  They'll just make it lame.

But if you insist, you probably got to start them off on an accessable strip.  I'd say These Knives or Isosceles Lock, then point them to Road Trip + Subway Wars, and maybe Hacking Yahoo, too.

i was put onto it by my friend david. he sent me the homosexuals the gorilla strip as an example but advise me to start from the beginning. i have since put 2 people onto it in a similar fashion and neither have looked back since. the PBF was mentioned just before. i emailed that gurewitch guy after seeing his angry hammer strip in the Guardian. he emailed back that same night with detailed answers. what a nice chap.
