Yeah that's a good one. Can't wait till this generation grows up and we see angsty pokemon fan fic and shit.
Actually I'm sure there *is* angsty pokemon fan fic, but please don't feel the need to link any.

   I can't help myself. (http://www.vgcats.com/comics/?strip_id=1)
Actually I'm from the Pokemon generation, and no amount of catharsis will dislodge the shame that I went to see the opening night of the Pokemon movie. When I was 12.

I will never understand-- my school somehow didn't get the whole pokemon thing. actually, we did, but not in the Junior High division... only the elementary-school kids were into it. My grade was never into it.

I managed to experience both pokemon and power rangers by proxy of my brother while still being able to be slightly too old (and therefore 'too cool') for them. Which I don't mind too much because the games actually were quite addictive, worryingly probably my first experience of a turn-based rpg.

I remember power rangers! I remember when I got a black and gold coloured toy of the power rangers *****s before they were officially sold in Canada: I was the coolest six year old that week! Funny how no-one ever questioned the fact that Angel Grove was miraculously rebuilt each episode.
As for my pokemon fandom, it ended about two months before my thirteenth birthday. In fact I remember the day. I was at this Pokemon card game match and I looked around and saw kids younger than me enjoying themselves as kids can. I saw kids older than me, they seemed awkward, out of place and taking it all way too seriously. I knew I was on the borderline between the two. I knew I didn't want to be the latter. It all dropped away in less than a week after that, and everything Pokemon left my life, much to the joy of the recipients of my card collection. I kept the gameboy games though, and they came in handy in times of boredom in later years.

PS: A list of things the spell check wants to change fandom to:

  random
  condom
  phantom
  tandem

I'm just amused by the prospect of a Pokemon condom. Marketing at it's very worst, although possibly a strange way to defeat the American method of teaching birth control...

I was part of the pog generation.  That and Ninja Turtles were my only childhood obsessions.

Also sports, lots and lots of sports.

Oh, man, pogs. I am sad to admit that my major triumph the semester I was Student Council president at my elementary school was convincing the principal not to ban pogs. A few weeks ago, while packing for graduate school, I found my old slammer -- this giant brass thing with a holographic dragon on it (!). Suddenly, all of sixth grade came flooding back, and that was severely unpleasant.

man, I was in like 3rd grade for pogs!

you'd think you were 3 years older than me, or something!

STDs: don't wanna catch 'em all!

I was in Second Grade. This and other statements makes me think you're a year older than me.
Pogs was one craze I didn't get into as a kid, as I was so awfull at it. I kept buying really nice looking pogs, and losing them in games. After the third batch was gone, I gave up and stuck to video games.

Our school had a Pokemon phase which, within a few months, turned into a YoYo phase.

I don't know if I see the link, though I did and still do love YoYos.

Aw man, Yoyo's they used t come round like every 3 years at my school and then get promptly banned, think they were in fashion with 6th graders about 3 times while I was there.

They totally banned pogs when I was in 4th grade (maybe my school was ahead on the pog thing, because I am like 3 years older than the inevitable) because they said it was gambling.  That basically ruined playground time for a week until everyone just started playing basketball or climbing on stuff again.

Aw man, Yoyo's they used t come round like every 3 years at my school

That is exactly how it was here.  Like, all of a sudden there would be all of these stands in the mall walk ways selling yoyo's, then they would be gone.  Then, out of nowhere, they would be back in a couple years.

It's all down to whenever Twirl King visited the school.  Same happened in my schools.

At my elementary school we were all about pushing a hoop with a stick.

Yo-yo balls were the rage when I was in 1st grade, Yo-yos themselves requiring too much talent for either me or my peers. Also Yo-yo balls make better weapons.

I just played with a board with a nail through it.

  And you won.

When we had cans, we would kick them.

"I am totally rocking this can.   I never thought it would be like this."

It was purely a reference. Just to make you feel better about... Humanity?
It just absolutely highlights the way every school seems to pick up on yo-yos every couple of years, and overnight.

My school seriously considered banning slap bracelets because the local TV news claimed they would kill all the children, their pets, and baby Jesus. There was also (according to my mom who was a teacher) talk of pog banning because it was like gambling, but then somebody pointed out that its exactly the same as marbles, and no school in its right mind would try to ban marbles.

...people still play marbles? As a chid, I always wanted to play marbles... but I could never find anyone who would explain what the game actually entails. Or, anyone to play with me.

but I distinctly remember carrying around a bag of marbles and trying to find a suitable dirt-patch.

Nobody actually played, but it's an old game that our peoples' grandparents played. Therefore it was familiar and allowed. And if you think about marbles and pogs are basically identical other than the actual objects gained and lost.

I used to play marbles with my brother, never at school though that I can recall.

Our school used to just ban stuff on the basis that kids started fights and kept stealing each others pogs/tazos/oddbods/pokemon cards/stds
