Title: Good riddance, Joe Torre.
Post by: robot_god on October 10, 2006, 01:13:50 am
Joe,

I defened you for years.  We are even alumni of the same high school; however, your performance in this division series was unacceptable.  Next year, it's me and Sweet Lou, and the team is going to have that spark that you used to have.

*salute*

Go [NY] Giants!  And to a lesser extent, Mets.

Yeah, pretty much all New York teams can cram it.

I reserve my ire for the Mets (who as previously mentioned are pond scum) and the Dog-ass Jets.

Fuck.  The.   Jets.

Leafers!

Basically my reaction, slink. I never got the whole "everybody hates NY teams" thing.

Basically my reaction, slink. I never got the whole "everybody hates NY teams" thing.

Personally, it doesn't have anything to do with their New York-ness.

I hate the Mets because I'm a St Louis Cardinal fan.  I hate the dogass Jets because I'm a Miami Dolphin fan.

Over here, it is unfair to hate the Jets, since they are so bad and will continue to be for so many years to come.  It's like scolding a retarded puppy.

So, uh, it looks like they may not fire Torre:

I fuckin swear, Joe, if you play Giambi on first in another playoff game, I'm going to hunt you down.

So it looks like it's me and Sweet Lou in 2008.  In 2007, Giambi will blow Game 7 of the ALCS with a throwing error and the Texas Rangers go on the win the Series.  You heard it here.

Yea, the Yankees and Diamondbacks both did well with the "Fire Showalter" scheme.

All I can tell you is?

You cannot hate Joe Torre as much as I hate Cliff Floyd for allowing himself to be put on the NLCS roster. For the want of ONE more long reliever. ONE. Let alone the fact that if they hadn't kept him, they wouldn't have added Anderson "No-Hit" Herndandez and... maybe they'd'a had one more long man to get them through Game Two AND an explosive right-handed bat off the bench in Lastings Milledge.

But noooooooo, Grandpa Glass, you gotta go and be the goddamn hero and now it's one-and-one.

Cliff Floyd can go suck a big fat turd in hell. Seriously.

I mean, okay, I'll grant you...

Steve Traschel is just terrible, so I'm not saying that the Mets would've swept or anything?

But with the proper roster choices... i.e. admitting that Cliff Floyd should've retired at the end of the 2004 season and not putting the entirely useless Anderson Hernandez on as Floyd's designated pinch-runner as part of that situation by putting a second long-reliever (Williams or possibly Bannister) and Milledge as a legit pinch-hitter/late-innings defensive replacement for Green...

Then they win Game Two also and they're sitting up three-to-one and... maybe not even rushing Glavine out on short rest tomorrow, maybe they try to piece together a bullpen game.

Still, I'm telling you, the only reason the Cardinals are in this thing is just horrific roster management by Randolph and Omar. Old school "rewarding team players" and "giving veterans one last ride" bullcrap that's old school for a reason... because a long time ago, people realized it doesn't work.

That's why its old.

I supported the Mets this whole series (by not rooting against them) but HERE I DRAW THE LINE.  I don't root for no team whose fans wave towels like they just stripped them off their waists in the gym showers.  Detriot, St. Lou, and Mets fans can wipe my ass with their corny-ass towels.

You forgot Da Stihlers and their Terrible Towels

Well, of course!  They're the worst of them all.  They should move the World Series there and they can all wave them like they have Parkinson's.

Man though, today though. . .  By the end of game, it seemed like I pretty much was rooting for the Mets.  Shea settled down with the towels, and they impressed me in a few situations.  But Suppan really took that game for himself, when he faced Valentin with them loaded one out, and whipped out those two curves that fell off the face of the fuckin' earth, he waited the entire game to whip that pitch out, every other breaking ball was those tight little ones.  He really lit that at bat up, man, damn.

Besides for pinch hitting Floyd, Wille had a pretty good series.  Minaya, a bad year; I'd've traded Milledge and anyone for D-Train.

I watched the game with basically a room full of Mets fans, just one other Yankees dude, and it seemed like I was more for the Mets than the rest of the room.  Perhaps I simply drank more, and was more boisterous, but. . . I dunno what got into me.  I guess I just didn't want a Series in those towel slappin' parks.

I like the Mets players but I am not necissarily a Mets fan.  Well, I am not.  I am a Red Sox fan, but we both hate the Yankees.  Anyhow, my roommate is a huge Mets fan and a huge asshole, so I was rooting fdor the Cardinals because I didn't want to hear about how the Mets were the best team of history (that is the tyoe of guy he is).  Anyhow, the point of this is to say that I cheered about 10x harder than him after that sweet, sweet catch, and, by the end of the game, I was completly going for the Mets.  I am really drunk now and it is 4:48 am, sorry about the bad sentences and whatnot.

The Mets fans, we aren't many to count chickens before they hatch, y'see.

Until the 27th out, in our minds, something can still go wrong... and probably will.

Had Milledge or Franco, say, cranked a homerun instead of Floyd looking like a guy who should've retired two years ago... then... and only then... you would've seen some full-on record breaking boisterousness.

That's exactly the problem, and the basic reason I became a Yankee fan instead of Met fan.  Yanks are down four runs in the seventh?  I know they're gonna win, and if not, I'm genuinely surprised.  Mets are up 3 runs in the ninth?  I can look into a fan's soul and see this sliver of hope that the game is blown.

It's like Mets fans actually want their team to lose.  They want to just lose, let loose, and thrash the team, like whipping boys.  They're masochists.  They're sick, sick people.

Maybe they're partly right though.  I wasn't cognitive during their last championship, but look at what happened to those Red Sox: you have a team that defines themselves on losing, they win, and they really lose a big part of their identity.  Their sick, masochistic identity.

There is a difference between a Red Sox fan and a Mets fan, though. A big one.

A Red Sox fan KNOWS they're going to lose. Revels in being up on that cross. Doesn't know how to deal with the idea of winning because they'd never done it before and... probably won't do it again for a long time.

The Mets fan doesn't not KNOW he will lose, it is simply that he doesn't not have the capacity to KNOW the Mets will win. The Mets fan has known triumph, here and there, in '69 and in '86, in lesser degrees in-between... and has also known heartbreak... and has also known what it is to be in-between those for long stretches.

To the Mets fan, it is not over until it is over. In all the good ways that the Red Sox fan can sometimes not be prepared for... but also in all the bad ways that the Yankees fan can sometimes not be prepared for.

The Mets fan's path is the Buddah's Middle Path of baseball and... it's often the most balanced and therefore richest way of looking upon the game, in my humble opinion.

You make an excellent point.

Most of the fans I argue with regularly are also too young to truly have experienced Mets' success.  To me, they are very similar to  Sox fans, except for the fact that they made the choice actively.  My friends became fans when the Mets were at their worst.

But I dunno if I'd call them the humble middle path.  They are the richest team in the NL.  Middle path, I would say Marlins.  Except they embezzle.

Said it better than I could.

I would lay it out there that the Yankees became a megalith of lame only after the Steinbrenner purchase.

In all fairness, I think Yogi was probably talking about the possiblility of coming back from behind, rather than the possiblity of blowing it.

No way, they're just as classy now as ever.

If someone disagrees with this, then I'd like them to tell me the team they think are classier.

There is no class anywhere in sports.  It's a huge shithole.

As Paul said, my personal belief is that the era of Yogi was just a classier time in sports. The classlessness of other teams does not imply that the Yankees are classy by definition; this is not graded on a curve.

They having a parade in KY.  I didn't know the Cards were that popular.  I saw the Cards play (http://www.flickr.com/photos/pmcd9/210717076/) earlier this year.  They got the shit kicked out of them by the Phillies.  I left that game thinking they really sucked.  Next thing I hear they are playing in late October.  Go figure.

so, apparently the team where I am won? Huh. A lot of people are excited. A lot of my friends are pretending they have given a shit all along, and are all mad that I am not excited. I do not know about Baseball. You know? I'm not going to pretend to be a big cardinals fan when I'm not, that is called Faking. And everyone knows men can't fake.

but yeah, people are pretty excited here.

Most of the coolness of winning the World Series is negated by having a player with a little billygoat beard dyed Manic Panic pink. Like "Yeah... champions... great... we still got that guy with that lame face thing as one of our bench players, at best we broke even."

It's called getting into the spirit of it.  No harm can come of sharing in the excitement of being in a town that is celebrating a major championship victory.

Eh, the problem with the internet is a total lack of intonation to the conversation.

Had I said it out-loud, you'd've realized that... I'm about a week past sour grapes and... was merely picking on pretty much the lamest facial hair I've ever seen in my twenty-seven years. A PINK billy-goat STRIP.

The billy-goat strip, in and of itself, is probably the lamest facial hair attainable... like that little patch under the lip that people who think they're TOTALLY hip have... somehow crossed with the wild long beard of someone who thinks that maybe, just maybe, ZZ Top will recruit them off the street and give them a really cool guitar and a guitar what spins.

Already, this sounds to be SO outrageously affected that it couldn't exist out of fiction?

Like you wouldn't even put it on a Halloween costume because people would mock its total unbelievability? "What do you do, go to deep dark coffeehouse open mics with a beret and an acoustic guitar... and then cover 'Legs'? Go home, cut some holes in a sheet and come back as a ghost..."

And THEN dye it pink.

We're long outside of sporting animosity, my friend.

We are in the realm, strictly, of apocalyptically unrecommended facial hair.
