Title: Wardrobe Malfunctions! (split from "wombat watches movies")
Post by: wombat on October 27, 2006, 05:14:47 pm
OMG Ash that story about the movie is unbelievable.  How very not amusing of them.

My current two jobs are not perfect in many ways, but they are perfect attire-wise.  In one I wear a uniform so never have to think about what to wear, which is the ideal situation. In the other I wear jeans and a tshirt and the only person I see most days is one co-worker who basically never cuts his hair or showers so I am more respectable than him no matter what I do, which is the second-most ideal situation.

The only notable development for me lately, in terms of workplace attire, is that I finally purchased my own labcoat, allowing me to stop wearing the comically-small lab extra. (I could only button the bottom two buttons of the thing, and as such I looked like a pinup for a chubby-chaser science fetishist all day, which was an unnerving feeling.)  My coat is very white, buttons all the way up, and has more pockets than I will ever need short of relocating by hand an entire penis colony. I feel astoundingly professional in it.

The experience of buying it -- going into the uniform store, trying it on, checking for an internal pocket, and buying the fucker, all while my English-major roommate stood back marveling at the variety of nursing scrubs available -- also felt very professional and adult, especially when I showed my work ID for a 10% discount. (That said, this part confuses me, because they automatically give a 10% discount to anyone who can prove they work in any field that might plausibly require labcoats or scrubs; doesn't this effectively mean the place is charging a 10% tax on people buying Halloween costumes?)

Perhaps it is the rest of the non-Halloween year they are thinking of - nobly trying to discourage people from impersonating scientists, and doing evil things while saying "Trust me, I'm a doctor."

Your post reminds me - while I love wearing a work uniform, when I was briefly a vet tech I hated wearing scrubs.  Instead of making me feel professional, they made me feel like I was being forced to go to work in my pajamas like in a nightmare. I guess I should have realized right away that that job wasn't going to work out for me.

It probably didn't help that so many scrub designs include teddy bears for reasons I can't begin to understand.

I got some nice scrubs with lizards and giraffe and even stingrays, actually.  But it didn't help.

Yeah, I think that effect may be because of the patterns. While I applaud the makers of scrubs for having such a wide variety of colors and designs, they already look quite pajama-y, and I think their being covered in teddy bears or rocketships or holiday designs would only make that feel worse. While I can see some situations in which whimsical prints would be the most professional option (pediatric nurses), it's not in most cases.

Of course, I probably shouldn't talk; I'm one of those people who always felt weird when people would wear pajama ##### to morning classes in college. Just... put on some big-boy #####, for the love of God!

V-- I just crossed that line yesterday (actually, sweat#####), and I was pretty ashamed. It does not take that much effort to put on real #####, people. And think before you wear sleep-#####/sweat#####... it is OK at your first class or so, but will you have time to change? People at my 2:30 class gave me weird looks, and I felt kind of like a hobo.

See, sweat##### I can almost sort of understand, as long as they're reasonably nice-looking. A decently new pair of sweat##### (ideally in a neutral color) basically looks like normal trousers, and it doesn't exude the same level of "I care so little about my surroundings that I didn't even bother to get dressed" as pajama #####. That said, if the sweat##### are ratty and/or have anything written across the ass, the wearer may need a time-out to think about what they did.

Jibbering Jeebus you are on a roll today.

Ass billboarding is for wretched.

Thank you. I believe I've told this particular story before, but I have never, ever gotten over the group of freshman one year at my college who decided to all get sweat##### with "BEST ENTRY" written on the ass. (This is "funny" because the freshman residential groups are called "entries," and also because it implies they want anal sex! Oh! That is truly the limit. Yeah V, leave anal sex alone! Some people enjoy it. Why else do you think Cort has 'Best Entry' emblazoned on the back of his jeans?

(Apologies to all and sundry for that cheap shot taken with ugliest gun)

Oh, I hate to add to thread wandering, but I have been deeply, deeply traumatized by sweat##### worn by another to the point where there is only one thing I can think of when I think of them.  It's been a long time since I've done a wordy Mel story, so here we go.

See, in junior high, after leaving the private school, I found myself being taught by the antithesis of the Catholic School Nun - a sweaty, stinky, out of shape male math teacher named Mr. McKay.  Mr. McKay had a wide selection of sweat#####, topped with pit-stained T-shirts.  In various combinations, this was basically all he wore to teach in.  I don't know how he got away with it, because from all other experiences I've found that only gym teachers are "supposed" to wear casual clothing.  Anyway, the classroom itself can only be described as having the reek of body odour and pickled eggs every damn day.  The man was always sweating copiously, and the smell was horrible.  I mean, this guy had serious, serious hygiene issues on top of his inappropriate clothing choices.

Any way, there was a day, a day I was later to find out many other students also remember, where Mr. McKay wore a pair of sweats so worn out -and I'm not sure if he was wearing underwear, but if so they too was so worn out... They were so worn out that you could see a fairly clear and impossible to ignore dick print through the fabric.  I saw... I saw my stinky math teacher's dick.  I just remember being so shocked as to not be able to tear my eyes away immediately.  It was the car crash of dick prints.

Much later, in highschool when remembering back to days of yor with other classmates, someone else brought up the dick print, and it turned out that everyone else saw it too.  We were all just too young and horrified to have words to speak of it back in the day.  No one ever said anything to each other about it back then, but much later, we all agreed we'd most definitely seen it - and it was easy to remember the specific "day of the too thin sweats" because it was also the day when one of my classmates accidentally smashed the glass on the mathroom door after being thrown out of class on unrelated matters.

Those sweats were soooo thin... The things I saw.  Oh.  It's just not right!

Don't wear sweats, folks.  Especially if they're very worn out.  Please.  You'll traumatize the pre-teens.

Yeah, so when I work out I wear yoga ##### or those velvet-y JLo-style stretchy dungarees, though I basically live in constant fear of camel toe.

For the record, I have no objection to anal sex; I do, however, have many objections to college freshmen who think its merest mention is hi-larious. Hint: if you are not all having buttsex, don't make sweat##### saying you are! How hard can this be to understand?!

On other subjects...

It was the car crash of dick prints.

side_show, you amaze me always with your ability to make terrible things perfect. I laughed 'til I coughed. "Car crash of dick prints," indeed!

in the future, men will be required to submit both finger- and dick-prints to the police when booked.

dick-prints

Would this involve an easily imprinted material (like some tracksuit trousers) and a dick slap?

Either way, we could finally catch those guys who rub their Mr Thomas all over the murder weapon/stolen purse/victim (urgh)

I sometimes wore pajama ##### to class in college, which was doubly wierd because I lived off-campus and actually had to get in my car and drive to school without putting on proper clothing.  But I went to a women's college, so this was sort of the status quo.  Plus, on days when I only had a 9:30 -- most Tuesday/Thursdays after my first year -- I always went right back home afterwards, and it didn't seem like a good enough reason to bother with silly things like putting on ##### or wearing a bra.  Most of the girls who lived in dorms didn't, why the hell should I?

Once, towards the end of spring semester, I actually forgot to wear shoes.  Senior year was rough.

I regularly disregard shoes.  I almost got kicked out of a German class that was in a ROTC building because some Officer was pissed about me not wearing shoes in his building.  He tried to get me kicked out of the class and banned from his building, but since it was only the first time after he joked around with me about it, and didn't actually tell me not to, it was alright.  Anyways, shoes are kind of lame, in my opinion.  Well, they are my feet, as long as I am not bleeding it should be alright for everybody else.  Basically it is nothing that is not going to be on shoes.

for some reason, like half of the kids on my hall are freaked out about feet on a really high level. they would hate you, dude.

I don't get it. they're just feet, people.

I have finally recovered enough to type that I am shocked completely speechless at the idea that people would wear pajamas to class.  Or anywhere outside of their houses aside from maybe running out to get the newspaper off the front lawn, which I know no one ever does anymore anyway because they read Yahoo News in the PJs instead.

No one ever wore pajamas to my classes.  Was it because they were never early in the morning?  The small size of the classes, making each student more conspicuous?  Or was it just obvious that I was the kind of person who would pass out on the floor if I noticed someone doing it?

The trend here called them "dorm #####" but the majority of the people wearing them were teens, and therefor not in dorms of any type - unless you call your parents home a dorm...

Anyway, yeah, I totally agree with you wombie... but then, for me university was an important petri dish of social interaction, and studying theatre meant getting up in front of people and performing most days, so though I didn't always look my best, I never once thought, "hey... I'm just going to wear my pj's."  Then again, back in the day, my pj's were an oversized t-shirt and no bottoms, so, you know, getting up and putting on pj bottoms to go out was just way too fucked up of an idea to even cross my mind.

It depends on the school.  Like I said, I went to a small women's college, so there was really nobody to impress.  And there was no dress code for the profs, either -- some of them still wore professional attire (skirts and blouses) but most of the profs came to class in blue jeans or broomstick skirts.  That sort of sets the bar a little lower for the students' attire.

Now that I'm taking classes at UNC, I never see undergrads in pajama #####.  It's just a different environment.  Of course, I'm not there first thing in the morning either.  But I'd imagine there aren't a lot of students going to class in pajamas or sweat##### at Harvard or MIT.

At my school apparently there were only two acceptable ##### options for (hip/trendy) female students: pajama ##### or tight black #####.

About wearing PJ's outside the house.  If it's because you are running late or feeling tired and don't have the time or energy to change into something more suitable and you are going someplace where no one would be offended, then it's ok.  If you are wearing them because it's the hip thing to do, you are a douchebag.

In [catholic] high school there was a uniform, of course, but on dress down days, girls thought it was cool to wear pajama #####.  A reasonable sample of peers thought it was pretty rediculous.

I could sort of understand it if a student is dorming and just going to one class.  But basically, it seems like someone is going out of their way to make themselves appear uninhibited or something.  Completely precalculated.

This seems pretty similar to the hipster mentality popular in the developing-metropolis areas over here, where dudes go to Lengths to acquire retro clothing.  So precalcuated, it hurts.

Most of the professors that I worked with wore blue jeans too, so we weren't setting the bar very high. I actually didn't wear blue jeans - I wore corduroys or khakis or black jeans, which somehow in my mind were different.  That was what I called dressed up for work. But I wonder if it had something to do with there being a lot of students who lived off campus.  And most of my classes were upperclassmen who were even more likely to live off campus.

In any case, I am grateful that I was spared this knowledge until now.

And for the record I haven't the foggiest idea what a broomstick skirt is.

I'm all for wearing pajama bottoms to morning lectures at female-only colleges. Changing into proper 'trousers' can eat into valuable pillow-fight time.

I realise this post makes me a sleazy, lecherous oaf. In mitigation, I dont have a perspiration problem, and dont even own any tracksuit bottoms*, translucent or otherwise.

sweatasterisks.

Can'd!

Although I always pictured tracksuits being a different material than sweats. Me, I was a fan of the breakaway ##### with the snaps. The key to dramatically ripping them off is to only attach every other snap.

a few things: I can confirm that kids at harvard and MIT wear pajama bottoms. at least, I mean, I am pretty sure they do. And I have some peeps I can contact to ensure this.

Also, JL, the reason you don't see kids at UNC wearing sweat#####/PJ ##### is because you are in almost grown-up classes. I can tell you with absolute certainty that kids at that school wear pajama bottoms.

yeah, I have felt pretty low about myself ever since that sweat##### day. also, because now I am getting in this weird habit where I fall asleep in public places.

Guys, if you fall asleep leaning against a wall, this is how you will wake up: curled up in a ball on the ground, with your friend's coat over you, and her staring at you.

Once this happens, it should indicate to you that you should not do this again. Learn from my mistakes.

Hey, thanks for the virtual beverage - for a small pretend drink it's making me feel quite tearful.

And always carry a ghetto blaster with "It's Raining Men" ready to play, at all times.
