Title: So sick
Post by: jaydub on March 20, 2007, 08:35:50 pm
Apparently I ate some bad cheese.  Cheddar no less.  I like cheddar.  So I ate a lot of it.  Now my GI tract is empty - but it still needs to make sure no bad cheese remains.  Too sick to stand, sit, or lie down.

Good luck, and my thoughts are with you. Maybe it's fortunate, though - lots of times if you eat too much cheese your GI tract won't empty for days.

You will get better. You are ok at making yourself drink water?

Ooh.  Jay, I'm in the same boat.  I was all horribly queasy this morning, and then I forgot about it because I didn't eat anything for breakfast and went to work and with an empty stomach the feeling went away.  Then I came home and had a bowl of soup and now I am definitely remembering why I didn't eat breakfast.  Oooh.  You know that point you get to where you could throw up, only you don't want to and you're fighting it?  That is where I am right now.  I could go barf.  I don't want to go barf.  I could barf.  But I really don't want to barf.  If I do go barf, I'll probably feel better, but then I'll have barfed, and barfing is no fun.  And what if this is a flood gate style vomit, where opening the door to one session just unleashes a series of vomits.  Oooh.  I so don't want to puke.  Ooooh.  Fuck.  Should I drink some water, or will that just add fuel to the fire?  Should I drink some peppermint tea?  Sometimes that helps.  Oooh.  I really don't want to puke.  Must. Not. Puke.

Thanks all.  I've basically spent the day either
1.  Unconscious in bed
2.  Kneeling or squatting over the porcelain altar
3.  In a hot bath to clean my disgusting self.

I had moments like Mel was describing as I dashed off an email to my boss this morning, then just surrendered to it.  I figured that whatever it was that was making me sick I had to get it out to control the damage.

I'm presently waiting for hot water to boil so I can make some tea to ward off the inevitable caffeine withdrawls.  I've been sipping water and have gotten about 16oz down.  I'm planning to keep at that until I'm peeing every half hour or so.  I'm definitely behind the curve on water out vs water in.

My peppermint tea did rinse away the queasys, but now my stomach is making ominous gurgle-pop noises.

I did have a kid full-out puke on me on Sunday, and had to wait several hours to get out of the clothes, so it's sort of to be expected.

I hope you guys get better fast. Normally I'd recommend some Immodium, Kaopectate, or other anti-diarrheal to prevent you from becoming dehydrated, but usually when you've got the trots it's cuz your body has something in it that it's trying to flush out. An antinausea drug would be good too, but you'd have to get that from a doctor. I'm not sure that OTC remedies like Dramamine would work in a case such as this, since it's for motion sickness and it's not strictly an antiemetic. Keep yourself hydrated. Make something soothing to your stomach, like plain white rice, French bread, or crackers.

I totally wish I was there to give you guys IVs. I'm having some pineapple juice right now to keep hydrated. Drink whatever stays down, and suck on ice chips if you can't stomach anything else. Some flat Seven-Up, Ginger Ale, or Coca-Cola can also help with the nausea.

I have been feeling very queasy too. My boss is out with the flu. Our admin assistant, who has worked for her six years, said that she's NEVER seen her out for this long. Plus I was reading about Norovirus earlier today, so I'm extra skeeved out. I really hope I'm not getting sick and this is just, like, a simple nausea that comes from eating trail mix too often. Damn, I love trail mix.

...fuck. I worked out last night, so I probably got exposed to a plethora of germs while I was at the gym. I was careful to avoid touching my face until I got a chance to thoroughly wash my hands. I sure as fuck hope I ain't sick.

**EDIT, dammit, the sweet Fluffy One (Milan) is getting his claws stuck on random stuff. I need to trim his claws. DAMMIT...he just went up to Lennybruce and washed Lenny's face. I can't punish him for being sooo cute by trimming his claws!

Ha.  See, I wasn't losing any liquids, so when L started out with the whole IV thing, I was a bit confused.  I've had enough IV's to know I've had enough IV's.

I ate some nice plain popcorn last night and that seemed to sop up all the ill begotten juices in me.  I still feel weird in the tummy, but at least I'm not on the verge of spewing.

Linnea, sweetie, comforting is not making with the needle jabs for most people.

Heh heh... YOU guys may not like it, but I do!

Getting an IV when you're sick is awesome. Extra fluids and electrolytes from Ringer's Lactate are great. It makes you feel much, much better. It's also the preferred way to pink up after a hangover.

I'd just like to report that I have not in fact died, and seem to be on the path to recovery.  I'm going to spend the rest of the day digging my desk at work out from the accumulated piles of unfinished reports.

And drinking tea and eating lightly buttered toast.

Glad to hear the sick people are doing better, but I wouldn't have minded a good IV horror story.

How 'bout two?

1) My first IV.  I'm not clear on a lot of the details, but when I was 16 or so I got really sick - like "Gee, maybe you have cancer" sick.  Many horrible tests ensued.  At one point I was at a hospital and they had to hook me to an IV that filled me with some sort of... something... that then became visible when I drank this other horrible liquid.  Whatever was in the IV burned like fire, and I had to sit in the hallway of this hospital, freezing cold in my hospital gown, with fire liquid getting pumped into me.  After about 45 minutes of this, the doctor came and made me drink something that tasted like metal.  Then I lay on a table while an enormous... thing that looked like a steam press about 3 X 6 ft was lowered down toward me by a technician in another room.  I was supposed to lie still, but the press thing had to be lowered down so close to me that it really felt like I was going to be flattened.  It was scary.

2) With what turned out to be food poisoning, I had it coming out of both ends for over two weeks to the point where I couldn't possibly keep even water down.  I ended up admitted and hooked up to saline to rehydrate, but I was so out of it I was unaware of what the nurse was doing.  I vaguely remember a nurse apologysing to me over and over, then another nurse taking over.  Apparently she fucked up the IV pretty bad because my SO arrived to find my sheet, my hospital gown and a bit of my bed covered in blood.

IVs are nothing. The catheter in the junk is 10 kinds of hell. Not so much going in, but coming out- and the Maximum Snuggles immediately afterwards. I'll never understand why I thought it was a good idea to engage in the M.S. so soon.

IVs and me go together like peas and horrible fang beasts. Not so well.

I have what the kids call "rolling veins" and to as much as draw blood, they need to prod me five-to-ten times.

IVs.... Christ, even moreso. I dislike IVs very much. I turn white and often pass out after stab twelve or so.

I was told that I could do heroin for years without having a problem with my veins, because they are robust.

I avoid heroin, also chicky-snacks that will grade me on my ability to do it.

Judy-- I have no idea.
I mean... I've never gotten a compliment on my veins that I can think of.

...Judy, did a lady lick some peanut butter off of your veins?

Re: doctors. My mom's worst story, doctor wise, is from when she had a kidney stone. They needed to do some kind of scan to locate it, and they told her "stay still." While she was PASSING A fuck*ng KIDNEY STONE. She kept moving (ie: pulling into the fetal position) and the nurse kept coming in and bitching at her. My mom was in so much pain that she couldn't try to explain or argue, so she just kept trying to stay still.

I have been told by folks who donate blood a LOT that ..."OMG, I didn't even feel that!! Are you SURE that you drew blood?" and then I'll show them the lab vials and smile.

I've also missed veins, which suuuuucks...the worst was when I had to start an IV on a pediatric patient (~9 years old) and I totally missed it.. I felt terrible and had someone else start the IV.

Personally, I've donated in the gallons range of blood, and I've had some really shitty blood techs in my day. If a vein rolls, you CANNOT dig around for it, for fuck's sake!!!! Withdraw and get a new needle!!!!

I really feel for you guys with needle phobias. It can be very scary.

I don't have good veins.

For years I was a platelet donor for the Red Cross.  This means that they hook you up to a machine for about 2.5 hours whereby they take the whole blood out of you as in a regular whole blood donation.  Then it's pumped through a machine which separates the blood into its various component parts.  Then they keep the parts they want (platelets and a little bit o' plasma) and pump the rest (plus a substantial amount of saline solution) back into your other arm.

It's a very good thing to do, and I'm rather proud that I've given as much as I have.  It's been a few years since I've made a donation and I'm in a position to start again.  I probably will.

Anyway.

You ain't felt pain until they miss your vein on the return arm and pints of salt water and various blood components are being pumped into your flesh.  It's enough to make you (almost) completely forget what it feels like to have a fuck*ng knitting needle rooting around in your elbow looking for a blood vessel for 10 minutes or so.

Ow.

OW.

OW!

OW!!!

My right arm was bruised green from the middle of my forearm to the middle of my bicep for 10 days.

My veins don't roll, they dive for fuck*ng cover.  My blood pressure plummets, and my entire body goes into shutdown mode.  It's almost as though my body is thinking that if it plays dead the nurses will take the needles away and leave me with my precious fluids.  And of course it doesn't help that generally you're not allowed to eat before blood is taken.

I don't know if Vasovagal is the proper term or what that really means, but one lady used it.  I basically have to have a wet washcloth over my eyes, and you have to be quick because the longer I think about it the longer my veins spend looking for hiding places.

Honestly I don't know why I do that.  Shots aren't a problem at all, and blood in general doesn't creep me out -- I even spent a summer working in video production for a hospital's research arm.  I edited video of hip replacements, but I can't stand having blood drawn or an IV inserted.

Medical vampires usually get a big smile on their face when I put my arm out for them.  Big ol' veins, nicely contrasted against my skin and they don't roll much.  Everyone gets relaxed - its usually pop in, pop out and we're on our way.  Blood donation is something I like doing, but out of respect avoided for a year after getting my tat done.  I'll go back now that hepatitis has declined the invitation.  My blood bank always salivates over the O+ blood.

Somebody told me that you couldn't give blood after having any ink done. I guess this is only a rumor.

Yeah, that's just scare tactics.  They test every unit.  If you had some bloodborne disease they'd toss it.  If you give knowing you're a carrier for something, its a weird kind of dick move, since you cost the bank the price of testing (and I suppose there's some non-zero chance of it getting through).
Title: Re: So sick
Post by: linnea on March 23, 2007, 09:13:20 pm
While they test every unit, they have standards for donors.

You have to answer the questions truthfully, and then they decide if they're going to accept blood from you or not. At Bonfils in Colorado, anyone who has traveled to certain countries is automatically excluded. Same thing with getting tattooed or pierced; you have to wait at least a full year before you can donate.

Basically...yeah, they test each unit of blood, but there is always the risk of a false negative and tainted blood getting through. So answer the questions truthfully.

Is that true, that its only your risk?  What if it goes to a kid and they get (Reynaud's syndrome?), or to a surgical patient where the clotting capacity is needed?
Title: Re: So sick
Post by: robot_god on March 23, 2007, 11:18:55 pm
Not a problem.  First of all, the amount of any drug in 300mL of blood is going to be pretty low.  The body has 42 liters of body water through which most drugs are dispersed evenly (not only the blood, but extracellular fluid in tissues) and then 7L of blood.  So even if the dose was completely in the blood, 300mL will not contain more than 1/20 of the dose in the body, which is pretty negligible.

Also, for many surgeries patients are actually anti-coagulated, believe it or not.  Especially in the case of surgery on the legs, there is risk of developing a thrombus while the patient is lying on the table for an extended time and the blood is more stagnant, so it is common to give heparin to anti-coagulate before many surgeries.  Doctors always "err on the side of bleeding."  If a patient develops a bleed, it is not a big deal, they give a transfusion and medically it is not a serious problem.  However, clotting is much more difficult to reverse and exponentially more likely to be fatal.  Disseminate intravascular coagulation is a very scary medical problem, and could lead to a heart attack or pulmonary embolism (clot in the lungs).

I haven't given blood for about a year now but I have had a bunch of blood taken recently, like twice a week for the last month and a half. I apparently have fairly good veins but every now and then they just miss and it's the weirdest thing (to me at least) looking at this needle in my arm and no blood coming out then they just wiggle it around a bit and boom we're in business. Better than taking it out and resticking me I guess.
My brother gets annoyed because the red cross won't take blood from dudes who have engaged in male on male anal sex, I know that puts you in a higher risk group than the general population (though I am not sure how much higher, I'm don't think it would be as high compared to a couple of decades ago) but since we know each sample is going to be checked anyway it seems a shame to turn away such a large population.

Yeah, anyone who has sex with men (any type of sex), or if you're a woman who has sex with bisexual men, you're IMMEDIATELY outta the donor pool. They won't even let gay men donate sperm from what I understand, although there are some banks that are trying to change that.  I knew several gay fellas in Denver who were really pissed about being cut out of the donor pool like that... but they also ban people who've traveled to Africa or were born there. It's a matter of risk.

Another of my coworkers (not the one I sometimes call Lizard) calls herself "The Mad Cow", as she is British and of a certain age.  I think Discover has an article this month about how, although beef consumption dropped some, many people on The Island considered it a very mark of the culture that one should eat beef - and to avoid doing so would be more self negating than dying of chronic encephalopathy at some future date.

My coworker is persona non grata at the bloodmobile when we do our biannual drives, so Doc's recollection is true for The States as well as Oz.
