Title: Sports and exercise
Post by: Nabubrush on March 26, 2007, 10:47:30 pm
I'm more or less a softball, pool, darts kind of guy. This weekend, my brother-in-law invited me to shoot the old puck around, rollerblades style. This is my first experience with this. I can sort of skate, but I haven't actually played any hockey on blades or ice skates. Long story short, I skated for maybe two hours and a day later, my back hurts a great deal (I am old). How do I train myself to keep my back straight so it won't hurt the next day? Is it something that will just come with practice? Is this member pool too shallow to give me the answers I need? Help me, TOUAMB members!

Something I've been doing to loosen up the lower back is a streching excercise that you must do alone because it makes you look like a douchebag.  You get down on hands and knees, lift your neck up and look foward.  Then, you extend your left arm straight out simultaneously with your right leg and try to get your limbs and back as straight as possible.  Do about eight reps and switch arm/leg combo.  Doing two sets should be enough to limber the lower back up a bit.

Helped out with my lower back tinge that I got as a kid.  I snapped a half-court shot with my back at basketball practice and it was irritating for years, still does a little.

Pilates will do wonders for your lower back strength and stability, which it sounds like you need here. Actually it develops strength and stability in the abdominal muscles which will support the back and basically take a lot of the load for supporting your torso off the back muscles and put it in the abdomen, where it belongs.

Also, hamstring flexibility is a key component of lower-back health as well, so yoga poses like downward-dog and forward fold (standing or seated) are good to do on a daily basis.

You will laugh, or crinkle up your nose, but honestly ballet is one of the best types of exercise out there to protect the back and keep it strong and supple for many years. See if there are classes for adult beginners in your area (you'd be surprised how many are out there, actually). Alternatively, there are some good videos that can help you: New York City Ballet workout being a good one in terms of the exercises (but sort of lame in terms of production value). Balletone is another line of ballet-based exercise videos that is popular, although I personally can't recommend them one way or the other because I've never tried them.

There should most definitely be Pilates classes in your area though, because they're becoming ubiquitous, and I'd recommend starting there if ballet isn't really your bag.

My trainers and coaches have always advocated ab workouts to prevent back problems and improve posture. This is particularly important in skating because you have to bend at the hips and not at your back.

Exactly! I workk my abs but maybe not enough? I think I am cursed to bend at my back and later be in excrucating pain.

Charlie Parker kicked me so hard in the groin that I curled up in a ball and cried "Mama".

John Coltrane and "Cannonball" Adderly were really rude to a Chinese man in front of me one time.

Arthur "Big Boy" Crudup once did the Three Stooges nose pinch on me. Afterwards he gave me a hug, just to ensure there were no hard feelings.

I don't know if this belongs in another thread, but once Yogi Berra did the cunnilingus gesture to my girlfriend.

Did you just stand there and put up with it? Or did you kick him in the jimmy?

Satan gave me a taco.

It made me really sick. The chicken was all raw and the grease was mighty thick.

Nah, he did it out the backseat of a Towncar, flicked two dollar bills out the window and just sped off.  I didn't even realize what happened until it was too late since I was trying to remember whether or not I put up the counterfeit handicap parking permit on my rear view mirror.  Turned out I did all along.

I have a yoga ball that I sit on instead of an office chair. It really helps strengthen your core.

Also, Pilates and Yoga will help a lot.

Playing the piano and violin since five years old make your back nice and straight for life.

Okay, don't listen to me. I just had to get that out of my system.

Isn't this supposed to go somewhere else? I'm trying to accomplish something here, West.

Huh - turns out this is exactly where this was supposed to go.

Ash, I'm curious about the balance board idea. I think I could do this at work, although I probably would have to use a ski pole because I'm not sure I can get a hockey stick up there.

This made me laugh.  Two bucks, eh?  That's the going rate for "you stand there and watch as I make a lurid gesture at you" is it?  I wish I'd been paid for all the lurid gesture's I'd had thrown my way!

Most disturbing lurid gesture moment?  Leaving the children's theatre in early winter, on a bus, I looked out the window and a teen on a bike had pulled up his shirt and was twiddling his nipple while doing the v-finger-lick at me, and his buddy, also on a bike was reaching over rubbing the other guy's belly (what?) and also making sexual motions with his tonger.  So shockingly vulgar and totally senseless.  I just stared blankly at them, not knowing what my part in this odd transaction was.

Also, as a kid I used to play floor hockey on a team named after the roller derby team the Thunderbirds.  We won the tournament.

I think I might require therapy after something so random and provocative was thrown my way.  That seems so beyond the pale.

You know I'm so desensitized that it probably wouldn't have been of note if not for the total confusion I had over the situation.  I need therapy for a myriad of other reasons though.
