Title: March 27, 2007 - "I Need To See This As A Challenge"
Post by: Toaster on March 27, 2007, 07:15:01 am
http://www.achewood.com/index.php?date=03272007 (http://www.achewood.com/index.php?date=03272007)

At least Pat was only half-lying. He is, after all, in a nearby town.

At first I thought Pat actually had a physical person named Steve in the room with him, then I got the joke.

I'm the new guy. Been reading Achewood for two years now. I didn't try to post first, it just sort of fell into my lap. God bless the baby angel in charge of days like today.

Ok, Onstad, seriously bro, are you out there? This has gone on too long. Ray can not be gay. He is a homeboy.

Yeah, please don't let Ray be gay, not that there is anything wrong with that.

Just noticed: Onstad loves his logos (Super 8 Motel).

Also, this is kind of a character study; look at Pat and Ray in their infinite dichotomy: Pat at a cheap motel, having lied to his business partner's face, renting the rooms on both sides to avoid being overheard. And Ray, proudly ready to get off to "Braveheart" in the comfort and familiarity of his own home, and when he finds that it's actually gay porn, he just rolls with it. The two cats are polar opposites.

I've long thought that Ray's exhibited a few, ahh, shall we say, "latent tendencies" on occasion. There was one strip in particular that had my Raygaydar going off on three or four separate points in just a few panels. I just need to remember which one...

Ray doesn't have anything against gays, in fact, he's pretty open minded, once you get to know him. (http://www.achewood.com/index.php?date=02142005)

That said, I think three hundred dollars is worth more to me than strangers knowing I masturbate, even if I were masturbating to a DVD for which I bought a bottle of rum.

In a nearby town.

This one, (http://achewood.com/index.php?date=04212005) perchance?
I am not paying for the serializer strips just so I can link to the one with Ray in roller skates.

EDIT: ...or this, (http://achewood.com/index.php?date=03222002) even?  This goes back some way... knuckleheads since small times, indeed.

No, it wasn't those ... I think it might have been the recent gay romance novel strip. Lemme go look at it again...

Braveheart is basically Ray's go-to film. Given how new he is at the entire breast man thing, he might have recognized the rudeness of Mel Gibson's man-titties - which spend most of the movie on display - and made a logical leap too far.

As for him being determined to get off to Steve's Party to the point of regarding it as a challenge? It has nothing to do with gay or straight. Ray Smuckles: He gets things done. (http://achewood.com/index.php?date=09062005) Getting things done is not always a blessing.

I wonder if Pat still allows Beef to be aware of his ... activities now that he's gay. Pat must also have a crap-ton of money if he goes to all this trouble every single time.

I don't think Ray was going to get off on Braveheart, nor do I think he is gay. I think that he realized that he had gay porn and immediately assumed that he couldn't get off on it because it was gay porn and not his type of chumptylicious birthday cake porn.

Then...he had a flash of optimism.

I sort of sympathize with Pat here - getting the three rooms and all.

I used to live in an apartment where the building used to be fewer, enormous apartments that were later broken up into several smaller ones.  The added divider walls were the opposite of sound proof.  The sunroom off my kitchen used to be a shared sunroom with the apartment on the other side of it.  Instead of keeping it like that, it had been divided with a thin piece of plywood so thin that it bent if you pushed on it, and with gaps at the bottom and top that allowed full sound carry over.  One day I was sitting out there, heard the sound of a single set of foot steps enter the otherside:  walk, walk, sit... furious masterbation!  I gave a few polite "cough, cough" noises to alert the fellow that I was there.  I made a few more obvious sounds, then I realized he knew I was there before he had started, that he was intentionally involving me.  I left the sunroom and closed the door.

In the same apartment, my bedroom and a different neighbour's bedroom had once been one room - the wall between wasn't as thin as the sunroom divider, but it was definitely not sound proof at all.  It was vacant for the first 6 months or so of my living there.  Then someone moved in- her alarm clock might as well have been next to my bed, I knew exactly when she had a cold, etc.  It never occurred to me to complain about this, because... what could be done?  A little while later, the landlord came knocking.  A burly jovial sort of guy.  He was clearly uncomfortable... "Um... I don't know how to tell you this... the girl next door is complaining about some... noises... while you're in the bedroom... when your boyfriend is over...I'm sorry... she says it's very loud."  I told him not to be uncomfortable, I taught sex ed... that it was a sound proofing issue, not a "me being loud issue" - that I could hear every cough, that I woke up to her alarm three hours before I had to get up, that I could hear every phone conversation.  "Well, maybe try... a ball gag?" I explained we were not being excessively loud, but that we would try to be quieter, but that with the way sound carried, that not much could be done.  He kept talking, and talking and kept saying "ball gag" over and over again... Once he got warmed up, there was no stopping him!  Later I got a letter of apology from the girl next door about her complaining about the sex sounds, which was just the funniest thing ever.  After she moved out a new girl with a boyfriend moved in, and I got to hear exactly what the other girl had been hearing.

Other people's sex sounds... so very awkward!

Also, in the same building a floor above, I got to hear the guy sing loudly in his tub (cute) and beat his girlfriend (awful).

I never met any of these people.  I just heard their noises, and they heard mine.

Ray was going to get off to Braveheart in the same way that many straight guys get off to football...

Not physically aroused by the men on the field but rather physically aroused by the idea of BEING one of the men on the field. Drinking in that power fantasy, drinking in that surge of significance and meaning and virility and totally imagining using that power with a lady, even if on a purely subconscious level.

This is also an unstated component of why dudes like lesbian pornography.

Yeah, I think this goes to show that you're fine-tuned to pick up the slightest gay vibe from Teodor, but Ray is a gay siren and nobody notices because he is a homeboy.

He wrote a gay romance novel for his gay friend's birthday. That is really pulling out all of the man-loving stops.

Is it a thing for gay partners to watch gay pornography while they are doing the deed?
I don't know any straight guys who have done this. Its not like I'd watch a movie about playing golf, while I was playing golf.

I know lots of straight couples who watch straight porn to get offski. It's like toys or fetish-play or anything else, some folks are occasionally bored with just the two of them gettin' it on. They need a little something else to get the oomph back into things.

Not me, personally, most sex-act pornography turns me off because I just start thinking of what terrible things happened to them that made them make sex-act pornography and I start feeling guilty and just wanna give them a blanket and a hot cocoa and tell them it's okay.

This is the same reason I am not into strip bars. My liberal guilt ninja is strong.

See, for me it's less of a liberal guilt ninja thing (even though it should be) and more how mercenary it is. I did not get a lot of action in my formative years; I do not think I have it coming. It would speak poorly if the only way I could get consent is to pay for it.

That is why strip clubs don't work for me, nor professional porn. If I am gonna see someone naked it had better be 'cuz she wants me to see her naked, not 'cuz she wants the money that involves.

But yeah, a lot of couples gay and straight go for porn, and it's more a matter of those couples' preference kink-wise than sexual-wise. I know a few gay couples, some are open enough about their sexuality that they'd be open to something like that but only one of them watches porn together regularly. The same proportions bear out for my straight relationship-having friends. Some couples find watching porn together uncomfortable; some find it hot, and some don't see the need to bother. Don't get all macho about it, though - no shame in making sex better with science. That is what science is for.

Off of the subject of straight sex and onto the subject of maybe-gay cartoon cats: I find it surprising nobody has commented on the quintessential desperation of the coconut rum here. Pat is out of the closet but the only gay man he is willing to buy a drink is a man partying on a DVD. A straight Pat would probably do the same thing, and probably he did before the Curse of Gladdington Castle kicked in. It's not even that he's ashamed, it's that he doesn't want the vulgar plebes involved, and that includes the man or woman hottie he wishes to hit on.

Ray is getting off to Braveheart because he is too lazy to seek out stellas, or if my theory holds water because he is too lazy or inexperienced to find a decent porn for the discriminating breast man just yet and has decided to go for what he knows. Pat makes a huge production involving at least a couple days' pay out of a quick beat-off - not because of shame for himself but because of contempt for others. Ray just wants to get off without having to work for it; Pat can only get off if the small-minded common people are not involved. This is the essence of these dudes.

I had a suggestion for that issue, but reading it over I realized that it basically made me into the crappest of crap dudes.

I am not saying there isn't any pornography in my life.

I enjoy a still picture of a sexy naked lady as much as anyone who is into ladies. I am into saucy stories as just about any straight-identified dude could be. And there is some awesome softcorey stuff that is live action that I can't deny is pretty awesome.

But when it's just two people gruffling each other for money, because they were messed-up in the heads as kids and their self-esteem is so fucked that they think this is the only way to make money or... because they are so into Hard Drugs that it is just the easiest way to get more or... because they are legitimately crazy in some way... man, I can't do it. It hurts me that people are that messed-up.

For some reason, someone just getting naked and having a picture taken, in front of one cameraman and an assistant or whatever... I can think that maybe it is about something other than a pathological desire to debase oneself. It could BE as a lark, it could BE just for money, it could BE because you're trying to keep afloat while trying to be a model or an actress or something.

But when you're fuckin' in front of a camera, when you're grinding your bunny against a drunk trucker's mustache for a twenty dollar bill, a line is crossed and I want to get you cocoa and a blanket.

See, that's why I mostly like amateur porn. For some reason the people involved want to be seen going at it. I'm cool with that.

On the other hand, winding up in porn-for-pay is usually in the blanket-and-cocoa department and I feel pretty bad about most professional porn.

See, that's why it's definitely Liberal Guilt for me.

It isn't even about getting paid or not... it's about crossing the line from getting naked and maybe posing a little bit and... feeling the need to have total strangers you will never interact with in any other way watch you fuckin'/being fucked/etc.

I can't shake the idea that such an impulse has to be the result of Terrible Things happening to you.

I mean, if you are into voyeurism and you wanna fuck and have a third party indirectly in your sex act by watching and getting off? That is weird to me but might just be a really intense fetish thing. You are still bringing a person you chose into your intimacy and all that.

But strangers you will never meet/never interact with outside of that context?

In my head it can only be about wanting to feel awful about yourself.

See, my problem is that I've never seen a porn film with sex so hot it managed to really hold my attention. The Gentleman Caller has tried to expose me to some high-class stuff -- you know, all Candida Royalle and such, very sex-positive -- and I get distracted by stupid things, like people's ludicrously '70's/'80's outfits, and the fact that Candida Royalle named herself after the organism that causes yeast infections. Or I end up thinking about the "plot." Or, y'know... a thousand other things. Maybe this means I'm secretly asexual or something, but damn.

Yeah, most porn pretty much cold sucks. If you're not enthusiastic enough on the prospect of boning enough to ignore the more preposterous stuff, there's next to nothing worthwhile. And the people with that kind of enthusiasm (read: desperately high libido) are mostly men.

Which reinforces the porn industry's already pretty off-putting male-centeredness. This is why mainstream porn is generally boner-killing: If I wanted to watch a film about how awesome it is to have a c*ck I'd be watching old John Wayne movies or something, not porn, thanks.

EDIT: Wow, p0n0s filters to c*ck here. Intriguing.

If it helps with the liberal guilt, "AV Idols" (adult video stars) are often considered legitimate performers in Japan, and it is seen as a potentially viable way of moving into a larger career. So there's that option.

This does not address any of the other reasons to be uncomfortable with Japanese porno, of course.

Yeah, what sums Japanese porn/sexuality up in a nutshell for me is that Japanese lesbian porn apparently involves each chick pretending the other is raping her.

It's pretty awful.

Plot? It seems like more and more porn is moving away from plot and more towards "this is Amber, she's 19, and is going to blow these 12 guys"

Have you done a lot of research on this? Would you say that you are worldly in terms of this?

He isn't saying that no straight couples do this; he is saying that no one he knows does, and he is asking the status of this type of thing among homosexuals, which seems a legitimate enough question.  You don't need to jump all over him!  Maybe Nabubrush needs to drink (a little less)?  ;D

And indeed, a porn lacking both feeling and heat is kind of like watching someone build a cupboard or something, for all the arousal it inspires.  Sure, all the male and female parts are there, but they are also in anatomy books, and there usually is a point (shortly after puberty) where such things cease to titillate entirely of their own accord.

I have an ex who once nonchalantly mentioned that she could see herself becoming a stripper if she felt more secure about her body.  This was extremely off-putting to me, because I saw the reason against being a stripper as being a hell of a lot deeper than some vain esteem about your appearance.  She didn't seem to understand this.  The reasons you folks (like mets) have against porn seem to sum up my reasons against showing off your body to anyone who would pay, so it resonates with me.

This is actually a great idea for pornography, though, Cort.

Lengthening the titles of pornography so that they ARE the only attempt at plotting at all.

"Older Woman Inserts A Soda Can In Her pu$$y And Then Blows A Man Of A Different Ethnicity".

"Midgets Eat Poo As It Falls From The Anus Of A Woman Who Is Supposed To Be In The WNBA".

"Man Starts To Have Sex With A Lady, Who Turns Out To Be A Man, And Now He Wants It More."

Yes, it would clutter the covers and make the links to order longer but...

It would both eliminate what useless remaining attempts at plot AND serve as a sort of Truth In Pornography thingee so that... you are never in mid-stroke and suddenly disgusted.

Ah, okay. I... had forgotten that you are a Mod-Type who has access to technology to know that I wasn't two people, to be honest. I'm pretty caveman-like about the nuts and bolts underneath websites, even the things I do know escape me easily.

I will keep the above in mind.

Perhaps I was a bit paranoid because I looked at my profile and realized this is my... uh... Touamb birthday?... and I have managed to post way too much and... I'm pretty paranoid about my getting annoying and not knowing it until it's too late, anyway. In real life and on the computer.

Happy anniversary, LFM.

You are not annoying. Sometimes you need to be skimmed because life is only so long, but there are worse sins.

The part of me that is basically Roast Beef considers this turn of phrase the highest praise possible without fearing that someone is lying to me or being sarcastic. I dig it.

He isn't saying that no straight couples do this; he is saying that no one he knows does

And if you'd hold your hosses there, cappy, you'd realize that I was asking if he felt it was pretty normal to have asked everyone he knows about this subject. You know, because the only way a person can say that no one they know does a certain thing is to have asked everyone they know if they have done that thing.

If I say that no straight guy I know enjoys watching porn while he gets down with his lady, that means I have asked (for instance) my dad if he likes that thing, and I've asked my boss the same, and I've asked all the straight guys here the same. I may think I know the answer, but I can't say for sure until I ask the question. See what I meant back there, now?

In other words,

(No straight guy I know) watches porn with his lady

vs

No straight guy (I know watches porn with his lady)

You have to be able to make some generalizations within reason.  If he had discovered a correlation among, say, eight of his ten closest friends, that's enough to at least be able to remark upon it.  I wouldn't think he'd have to go in and take up the matter with his second-grade teachers to at least form a theory of his own.  Perhaps he should have said, "No straight guy I know, whom I have asked about the matter..." but that's just getting pedantic.  Maybe I was just misreading your post, and indeed inflections are lost entirely on here, but it seemed rather condescending to ask if he was "worldly" about it, when this is such a subjective topic.

But now I'm kind of just interrupting the original topic anyway, so let me go round up my horses.

my old girlfriend would always try to give me porn suggestions, and it made me hell of uncomfortable.

...also, the kinds of porn she was into explained a lot of things.

It's kind of awkward at first finding out your SO is into the same kind of porn you are, but after that wears off it's kind of cool. In my case, that's just about the only leisure-time thing the two of us actually have in common, except Maximum Cuddles.

And she enjoys can-rockage more than I do, which I am informed is bizarre but I roll with it.

I've never watched porno with a partner.

I did once watch porno with a friend , and his 5 gay guy friends (none were partners).  It was certainly not planned.  I was just hanging out with him, "knock, knock" at the door, in come the buddies.  "Hey we brought this tape I just got of ebay from Korea."  In the blink of an eye, I was in a room with 6 gay men, watching porn.  I just sat there confused.  Why would my buddy who I'd never watched porno with before, and who I'd been very open about having a crush on before he came out - and a group of total strangers - assume I was into watching porno with them?  Why wasn't I consulted before the tape was played?  Why did I sit there pretending to be entertained?  I remember really intensely wanting to leave, but being welded to the spot because I didn't want to be thought of as either homophobic or a prude.  I also wondered if I was interfearing with some next step in the ritual... do people really get together and just watch porn without the plan to either masterbate or copulate?  Can you just watch porn casually, as a way to pass the time?  Like a re-run of Seinfeld or something?  Because this is not how I work.

Hell yeah. In fact, I definitely look at pornography much more often as an entertainment in terms of "can people really get off on this? I have to figure out what is so interesting about this to some weirdo" research than as gettin'-off devicery.

But watching with others is definitely weird in my book.

I've done it, certainly. This is why I talk about the "plot" -- the majority of the times I watch porn are actually with a group of friends, usually mixed-gender, with no intent on anyone getting off on it. This means that generally we rent ludicrous things (like "High Desert Pirates," which had a surprisingly elaborate rolling-pirate-ship set, a subplot about "nuclearized anthrax," and a greasy guy in a poncho who never appeared in any porn scenes) such that they can be mocked. (Admittedly, for "High Desert Pirates," most of the fun was spending a good 20 minutes wandering around the porn room at Movie Gallery and laughing hysterically while choosing a film. "Hey guys!! Can we get 'Unusual Gay Cocks?' Seriously, look at this cover -- they're unusual!!")

Did we ever establish wether Ray was fixin' to get off on Braveheart? There is a honeymoon scene somewhere towards the beginning.

Also, I'm surprised that some variation of "maybe try a ball gag" or "my landlord suggested a ball gag" never became a TOUAMB meme, that I'm aware of.
