Title: ...Brazilian? What the hell?
Post by: linnea on June 10, 2007, 11:29:19 pm
Okay, so Bozack started this topic a long time ago (http://touamb.com/index.php/topic,2364.0.html), but I know that resurrecting dead threads is kind of taboo. I don't want any TOUAMBies getting all misty-eyed and clicking on the topic in a frenzy thinking that Bozack is back.

At the beginning of the topic, B also posted this:
WARNING- IF YOU HAVE ANY RESPECT FOR ME, AND WOULD LIKE TO KEEP IT, PLEASE STOP READING NOW. THIS WILL ONLY HURT YOU.

New question-
As you might be aware, humans evolved from apes. We lost our tails, our kickass grabby toes, and most of us lost our thick, luxuriant pelts.
Most of us.
Some of us are a bit less evolved than others. Some of us have managed to grow unsightly back-hair. And not just the bottom of the back-hair; I'm talking the wings. I believe, that with surgical strikes, I can isolate and prevent these still-light patches from become a Carl-level event.
So, I put it to you, TOUAMB- how does one go about getting their back waxed?
It's a really interesting thread, you should give it a read.

Being sick of shaving, I got an appointment at a spa tomorrow to get the most fearsome of waxes. Have any of you party people actually done this?

I fully realize that I'll have to get it redone about every 2 months, which won't be a problem now that I live in a place where anonymity actually exists. Like...it was hell of embarrassing to go in for an annual pelvic exam at our clinic, because there would be the nurses and PAs that I dealt with professionally whenever I brought them a patient.* I'm not sure how this will go. Stopping shaving long enough to get this done has been torture.  I'm not sure if it will even be worth it.

*"Hey, Somebody nice! Thanks for helping me with those hypothermia patients last night. Okay, scoot down and relax that muscle (*tap, tap*) so that I can get the speculum in. No, keep scooting down. Keep going. Okay, that's good. (*shove*) So are you seeing anyone these days? How are your cats?" and other retarded chit chat. Meanwhile a second nurse or PA would be peering over her shoulder and looking at my junk.

My most hated event was when this total whore flight paramedic came in to supervise my pelvic exam. What the fuck? She's not trained in gynecology, what the fuck is she doing in the room? Why is she looking at my junk?  She doesn't give pelvics, she will never be trained or certified to perform pelvic exams, so why are you explaining it to her? She can just stand at the back of the room and leave me the hell alone. Gah. Anyway...As all the ladies can attest, these appointments are not very much fun.

That thread is sad because of all the former regulars it contains.  Bozack, Andalucia, Aloha Dawg, Arkabee and on and on...

I have one friend who is the only person I know for sure has this done. She is the most macho person I know. She used to work with large mammals at the zoo and by the end of a day working with her I was practically dead, but she joined a soccer league so that after work she could get EVEN MORE painful exercise. She has a huge tattoo on a painful-looking part of her upper thigh. She's also heavily into all sorts of S&M and bondage stuff.

Draw from that what conclusion you will.

I heartily endorse letting everything grow out. Who's it hurting?

Barring that, trimming everything short but not shaving anything is another way to keep things sort of neat without intentionally putting yourself through agonizing pain. I feel like Brazilians and all that sort of stuff was thought up so someone could make money off the pain of others - and that's not cool.

I gave my dog a brazilian of sorts today.  She had some heinous dingleberries going on.  I wouldn't let her inside for fear of immediate enthusiastic lap cuddles. Its a measure of her faith in me that she tolerated scissors near her tail and rear end.  Needless to say, I didn't giver her a human style brazilian, all shaven down to skin.  I'll spare you pictures, unless pressed.  In which case I'll alert the authorities.

I think an integral and defining characteristic of the Brazilian is violent hair removal. If you tried to do that to a dog, you'd get arrested.

Yeah, I don't know. I've been shaving forever and I guess I figured that this would somehow be easier? I plan to take some Advil prior to driving over there. I wish I had some EMLA cream or ointment or something to kill the pain. We'll see how it goes. If I could withstand getting 14 gauge needles through my nipples and then crescent barbells shoved through that...well, I think that a measly Brazilian will be a walk in the park. (I took one of the barbells out after 10 months, and then the second one shortly followed. They weren't worth it at all).

Nabu, I am afraid we are just Old.

Here is an except from the online chat of Gene Weingarten, humor columnist at the Washington Post.

Quote
And so here was an opportunity to put to rest, once and for all, an awful, persistent rumor that has been raised many times in this chat. I asked Dr. Stanton to please tell me it is not true that young women -- women under 30 -- are routinely shaving off all their pubic hair.

"Oh yes," he said. "Sculpting, too. But mostly shaving."

A long, tragic silence ensued. Dr. Stanton could sense my agony.

Gently, he said: "It's the millennium, Gene."

So. I hung up, deflated. And I wish I could tell you -- I wish the protocols of journalism allowed me to tell you -- that that was all. But we are in the business of disclosure here -- full disclosure, whatever the pain.

And so I must report that a few minutes later, Dr. Stanton called back. He said, "You know, there's something that occurs to me that you might want to know."

I should have hung up. I swear, I should have hung up. But did I hang up? I did not.

"You should know," he said, "that the practice is not limited to the ladies."

Auuuuuughhhhh.

"In the 25 to 30 year old range, I would say a majority of men -- a slim majority -- are shaving."

"They're shaving ....it all?"

"Everything."

-----
So that is what I have to tell you. I am so sorry to report this. I am crushed, within.

I feel a curmudgeonly theory coming on relating to my comments in another thread of how densensitized people are to violence in movies. Something about them also being desensitized to pain.  And getting off of my lawn.

Jesus.  Thank god I'm twenty-six, and only have to be tragically unhip for another four years.

I think an integral and defining characteristic of the Brazilian is violent hair removal. If you tried to do that to a dog, you'd get arrested.

From now on I'm not going to do anything to myself that it would be illegal to do to a dog.  Except give myself drugs, get myself laid, and make myself go to grad school.

Who gets to decide though? My dogs make such a fuss about having hair removed by mere brushing that they clearly consider this to be violence to their persons.  And don't let them get started on the bath thing.

Wombles, I quite enjoyed that.

I'm not really against it in a fogeyish, fuddy-duddy way. I am waging a war against big media, and their relentless push to convince women that they need to be taller, and lose weight, and color/straighten/curl their hair, and shave anything that has (horror of horrors) hair growing out of it. Maybe I'm just a crank. I certainly think anyone should do anything that makes them happy, but I think it's important to be clear on the distinction between that and feeling compelled to do it.

Anyone ever see the documentary on eating disorders? Powerful shit (unfortunately, the name escapes me). The whole thing where the media consistently tells women from a very young age that their natural, God/Gaia-given appearance doesn't measure up really, really pisses me off.

I'll just set my soapbox back over here now.

Okay, FIELD REPORT.

Have any of you party people ever hit your tailbone?

That is what Brazilian waxing feels like. It's like getting beaten on the tailbone repeatedly for about 35 minutes, except other parts of your anatomy are also involved. You're half paralyzed, the pain is searing and intense, and jesus god does it ever hurt.

Well...not all of it. Some of the strips she pulled weren't that bad. But some of them...SWEET BABY JESUS. She had to get me 2 cold washcloths, one for my forehead and one to press to my loins. I didn't cry or yell or scream, but that was only due to an extreme force of sheer willpower. After the appointment I drove to kellichou's house, got some ice in a plastic bag, and just stood there in her bathroom, ******less, holding the ice pack to my loins and whimpering inwardly.

Anyway, the lady was awesome and extremely professional. I stopped shaving for about 3 weeks to let my follicles do their thing, and the waxer said that they were the perfect length. Also, dudes get Brazilians too.

I couldn't even go the whole enchilada because after about 35 minutes I started to get really nauseated from the pain. I had to tap out. I ended up getting a triangle instead of the landing strip I had initially decided upon. Maybe next time I'll get more waxed off.

Some considerations:
1.   Even though it hurt like a bitch, I'm gonna get it done again. The endorphin rush was crazy, and I've been flying high on it all day since. It looks cool as hell and it feels really weird in a good way! She said that my skin was amazing and that I likely wouldn't have much trouble with bumps. Since I've been shaving for almost as long as I've had a lawn, I am the queen of exfoliation. I think that this is why My Area did so well.

2.  Get some EMLA cream, which is a prescription analgesic. If you can't swing that, then get some Bactine. You will need it. I did not do this and I sorely regretted it.

3.  Take some Ibuprofen (Advil) about 20 minutes beforehand. I did not do this and I sorely regretted it.

4.  Have a friend (DD) drive you to the appointment, and stop for some Margaritas and tequila shots right before the appointment. Seriously, I really fuckin' wish I could have done this. If you do this, then omit the Ibuprofen so you don't 'splode your liver.  I did not do this and I sorely regretted it.

5.  Get some witch hazel pads, an ice pack, and some soothing lotion (Aveeno has a Calming cream that is amazing). Also get some tea tree or other gentle antiseptic for The Area. Get them beforehand, or else you'll be miserably mincing through the aisles of the drugstore trying to desperately cobble together supplies to soothe your ravaged Area.

6.  Do not wear good panties to the visit. There will be blood and wax on them afterwards. Not a lot, but it would look really bad on expensive white Cosabella panties. Also...wear granny ******, not a thong. You want cotton. I did not do this and I sorely regretted it.

I thought that ibuprofen was OK with alcohol, liver-wise. Isn't is only acetaminophen that's bad news?

I also thought that Brazilian meant totally bare, even around back. Or is it just the technique used regardless of the areas removed?

I banged my coccyx on a rock once while inner tubing, but I can't imagine it being a comparable experience to one of these things.  Yikes.   It's not like the "Brazilian" is such a new development, though.  A tale from the Ottoman Empire:

Quote from: An Underground Education
Sonnini, an engineer traveling on a fact-finding mission for the government of France, made certain to explore the intricacies of the Turkish depilation process.  He reports that honey mixed with turpentine was made into a paste; this plaster is applied, allowed to dry, then torn off yanking the hair with it, from the roots.  "Fortunately, there is no need to return often to this rather severe process," notes Sonnini.  "If a re-growth occurs, it is only a soft down, like the finest wool; and, after a few years, vegetation of this sort is absolutely destroyed."

Also, a word in defense of those men who opt for a more clean-shaven appearance in that region.  It may not sound like a very mature justification, but... it really does make it look bigger.  It's also a less emasculating experience than you might think, as I discovered myself while drunk at a house party a couple years back.  I don't think I'd want to shave it bald, though; I imagine that'd just make me look like an atypically well-endowed ten-year-old.  I remain dead set against the shaving of most of the other usual masculine hairy places, or at least I was until I realized (at the very same party, as fate would have it) that I have sufficient chest hair to create a reasonably well-defined letter X.

It's not as if I had any dignity to lose anyhow, huh?

I hope I haven't been coming off as a asshole in regards to this stuff. I'm all for anyone doing anything they want with the foliage. It can certainly add enjoyment to the whole process. It's important to change things up and have fun with the whole sexy-time experience, because it's a tad absurd on its face to begin with. Also, you want to keep it all fresh.

I don't do any hair removal precisely because of the reason you cite - the ladies tend to say things like "don't come near me with that thing" so if I camouflage it, I normally have better results. Sometimes I just ask the ladies to look at it in one of those fun-house mirrors, so things don't get too intense.

I'm kidding, but what the heck's the point? They're going to figure it out when things heat up anyway. Unless you're an exotic dancer or if you frequent gloryholes or adult movie-houses, in which case you got other stuff going on, and we ought to just let it go.

A man presented his hairless member to me - I didn't say anything, but I was so confused.  What the hell?  You have back hair, but you shave your cock?  Anyway, after an occasion where he nicked himself on the scrotum and I had to apply a bandage, naturally first saying something about how it was clearly a ploy to get me down there, I let him know it was a totally unnecessary procedure, and things went back to nature.  I think it's a porno thing.  All those hairless chicks, and many a hairless lad in those films.

I also thought that Brazilian meant totally bare, even around back. Or is it just the technique used regardless of the areas removed?

A normal bikini wax only cleans up the hair that is outside a bathing suit, which is a very small area on the tippy-top of a lady's thighs and slightly out to the front.

A Brazilian cleans up ALL the hair, including the tiny amount that a lady has on her perineum, bum, and on the labia majora. Sometimes a small landing strip is left on the mons pubis, but many ladies opt to have every single bit of hair waxed off. Because I was in so much pain, she left a triangle instead of a strip.

Here's a SFW video (http://www.metacafe.com/watch/196149/brazilian_waxing/) of women going through the process.  I got sympathy pains just watching it.  Somebody nice will probably have flashbacks.

It depends. My waxer used a special type of wax designed for this application. It hardens itself and you don't have to push a cloth strip into the hot wax. She preps the Area with a cotton pad, applies the hot wax with a small popsicle-sized stick (unlike the tongue-depressor size that they use for waxing legs), waits for the wax to harden, then she rips it off in one lightning-fast move and immediately presses hard on the freshly waxed area to help stop the pain and close the pores.

Most of the strips were small, maybe 1/2" by 2". Like most ladies, I have a small Area but it still took forever to clean it up. Some of the strips were slightly larger. She showed me some of the strips, and it was pretty crazy to see all those follicles.

There's the pervasive influence of the media again. However, the tactile sensation should not be blithely dismissed, nor the lessening occurence of pubic floss.

My mom actually no longer has a coccyx. She was thrown into a suprisingly shallow area of a lake at a party in high school.

The episode of Bullshit about hair showed both a lady and a fellow getting their entire areas waxed. I did not really need to see a man getting his crack de-haired.

I realized there are two ways to do this - I assumed it was 'don't read it except to check in in case it has veered to a more interesting topic', but I realized there is an even better way: read it secure in the knowledge that everything people are talking about is completely mythical.

Wow, I feel a lot better now.

So, uh, I'll ask: dudes, do you actually have a problem with a woman having hair in the Area? Like, does it bother you? I wonder because, while I am not really into it enough to actually shave/Brazilian/etc., I occasionally go through spurts of self-loathing based on the theme "so, seriously, am I a cavewoman or what?"

Let me preface this by saying that I have had a few girlfriends in my lifetime. I have been with ladies who were au naturel, and ladies who shave. Both are equally hot. I have no preference. I started shaving because a dude I was with happened to like it, and I never stopped because the regrowth period is just awful.  I got the Brazilian out of perverse curiosity.

I'm old-school - I remember when all porno had hirsute women. You might say those were my formative years. I enjoy variety. My question is, do the young fellows freak if the first lady they get with actually doesn't shave? You know, because they've never seen an image of a woman who didn't go for the depilated look? It would cast rather a pall over the evening if a young man in that situation started wondering what sort of creature he was dating.

You know who we should ask? The new guy - Poonhog. He'd probably have an opinion about it.

We used to have an expression, "put a little hair around it" that somehow seems quaint now.

My personal preference in ladies area grooming is trimmed, but unshaven.

My question is, do the young fellows freak if the first lady they get with actually doesn't shave? You know, because they've never seen an image of a woman who didn't go for the depilated look? It would cast rather a pall over the evening if a young man in that situation started wondering what sort of creature he was dating.

I'm pretty confident any young fellow who has this problem has a whole host of more serious ones he should be dealing with first.

Pubic hair is not exactly a closely-guarded secret.

Huh. But it seems to be a closely guarded secret that women aren't naturally size 2.

I think we at one point talked about amusing shildhood misunderstandings, but I can't be assed to go and find it. However, I think you'd be surprised with some of the beliefs that people held in that thread. Also, I was being half-facetious.

I think you're talking about my post (http://touamb.com/index.php/topic,3481.msg84877.html#msg84877) and the brief sub-discussion about gender dynamics that ensued.

Personally, my parents were naked, hairy hippies, so I was actually surprised to grow up and learn that pubic hair was hypothetically unattractive.  Although it did take me quite a while to figure out that women aren't naturally shaped like underweight boys with fake breasts.  But then again I was an unusually neurotic kid.

(I)t did take me quite a while to figure out that women aren't naturally shaped like underweight boys with fake breasts.

See, this is what I'm talking about. That wasn't your personal environment, but that's what you accepted as normal. I hate that shit (no reflection on you; I hate that about the culture).

People, teach your children that women are naturally curvaceous, for the most part. Women are supposed to have hips and bottoms.

You know what's really fucked up? Even though the average American woman is something like a size 12 or so, that does not appear to be the most popularly represented size in clothing. How fucked up is that? It's institutionalized in the fashion/garment industry to more or less force women to be constantly trying to lose weight.

"Hey, you're a size fourteen? Too fuck*ng bad, all we have is size eights. Rice cakes, sweetheart."

Ok, now I'm angry again.

personally, I prefer less hair. But, you know, some is good.

I really want to find this "best of craigslist" thing I read where a woman wrote a note to the woman who gave her a brazilian wax and did a really nice job.

One part involved the wax being too hot, and the lady blowing on The Area to cool down the wax.

yes!! I love this shit.

Also: I am thinking about this too much, and I am starting to think that my preference for, er, the shaven variety is due to Context and/or lack of experience. I mean, my sample size is small. basically.

I am trying to state the facts in a way which is not crass.

Well, hey, whatever floats your boat, you know? I guess I'm really wondering if, if things have already progressed to the point at which it becomes relevant, hair density in the area is going to be a make-or-break thing. The current Gentleman Caller doesn't seem to have a problem with it, but if I return to the dating scene, I don't want to accidentally stun or repulse a new Gentleman Caller with the landscaping down there.

In any event, I suppose it's a moot point, because any dude who's going to be repulsed by area hair will probably be repulsed enough by my hairy forearms not to make a move anyway. In that regard, they're a good advertisement of the state of things.

I'd say any person who would get to that point and then reject another person based on the fact that they haven't removed the hair that naturally appears on their body is pretty shallow. By the time I got to know my wife enough to find out what was going on in the 'business area' . . . well, let's just say there isn't anything that could realistically have shown up that would have been a deal-breaker.

I am definitely a fan of the mostly-natural look... completely shaved lady-tackle is not my thing at all... but I suppose if you have a complete 70s porn 'fro down there, trimming it back just a little bit would probably be nice.

Y'know, like, how on a dude, a bushy beard can be rugged and handsome but... y'know... sorta trim it a little just so that it's even and you can still eat without needing fifteen napkins and stuff? Like that.

There is something ever so vaguely and ever so creepily... pedo... about the completely shaved lady-area. Sort of like I almost wanna blame the fashion industry for it, too, another way to try and make adult ladies look like... teenage boys who are into older men.

This is nothing against gay fellas, I am a huge fan of gay fellas... but there is this small segment of gay fellas who seem to be trying to take vengence upon the straights by making the fashion industry all about making women look like teenage gay boys to ironically punish us for holding us down.

And I am just like:

"Dudes, don't punish me, please. In my opinion, you can totally marry. I am a huge fan of Kids in the Hall. Please don't make women look like hairless, thin-hipped breastless teenage boys. I will vote for whatever propositions you need to get the gay marriage thing going. Just... stop. You are better than this Rod Sterling-esque revenge tactic."

You will not let us be with little twinky boys... we will make your WOMEN little twinky boys!

No thank you. I dig on Amazons and chunky girl next door types. Leave me out of this.

My advice to you is to never ask a question if you don't want to know the answer.

I always kind of thought it was the straight white male dominated society that was trying to keep women subjugated, but maybe you have a point.

Also, it is Rod Serling (no 'T').

I had a crazy crush and then a passionate college relationship with a particular lady.  Then we broke up and it was bitter and angry, and then five or six years ago she Googled me and got back in touch.  We met at a bar, she apologized for being an ass hole (two words for emphasis) and I really thought we were on track to recapture our intense, physically-oriented relationship and I was all for that.

Until I found out that she'd stopped landscaping her lady-garden and in fact came to the conclusion that 70's-style overgrowth was the way to go.

I immediately stopped being obsessed with her.  Why couldn't she have told me that in, like, 1999 so I wouldn't have wasted so much of my life pining for her?  It was like I'd been hypnotized and someone snapped me out of it.  She's still very beautiful in my opinion but my interest in her physical company is zero.

And it's not like my current lady is sporting a permanent Telly Savalas down there, but at least she makes an effort every now and again.  The promise of a little occassional sunshine at the end (or the entrance, as it were) to that particular tunnel is all I ask for.

I'm a fan of allowing hair to remain where it grows, except for the neck.  Anywhere else I can deal with.

Trimming is nice, but not necessary.  Sometimes it's nice to... ok, not going there.

I'm also not going to post the picture of the lady on all fours with a quote by Gimli and some props photoshopped in... but it appears if you Google Image search for "And my axe" you might find it.

Do I need to say that's going to be NWS?  It's going to be NWS.

I really just don't understand why I hate having hair on my neck and don't mind it anywhere else.  I'd go laser it off if it were cheaper, but I think I'd scare them if I *just* went in for that.  They might go into fits.

I wanna start off by saying, "to each her own" on this one.  From how bad I hear it hurts, I'm reluctant to try it.  Then I found the following links to make me even more reluctant:

I got some links from my favorite Patriarchy-blaming forum, which do give me pause.
http://scienceblogs.com/aetiology/2007/06/post_41.php (this represents a worst-case scenario patient, who blatantly disregarded her own health and well-being in the interests of having a hairless crotch).  Click at your own risk--pretty gross (no pictures, though, thank God).

PZ Myers's opinion, from Pharyngula, regarding the above "case study" http://scienceblogs.com/pharyngula/2007/06/mammals_have_hair_get_used_to.php

Summary of links:  one potential side effect of Brazilians is golfball-sized cysts from bacterial infections in the skin, or worse. In the case of the worst-case patient, definitely WORSE.  EW.  And currently no one, such as public-health departments, are keeping track of how many cases there are, so no one can say if these infections as a result of Brazilians are a super-rare or surprisingly common occurrence.  Oh, but in this worst-patient-case:  GO TO THE FREAKIN' DOCTOR IF SOMETHING SEEMS TO BE WRONG WITH YOUR FAVORITE BITS.  Seriously.  She could've avoided a lot of grief if she'd just gone at the first signs of trouble, rather than waiting.  Ach.

I might consider it if I knew I was going to a salon where the aesthetician was well-versed in universal precautions and had impeccable technique (regarding sterile practices).  But this has made me decidedly wary.

I should have known that reading comments on that blog would just make me depressed. Seriously, do people really treat full-body depilation as showering-level crucial hygiene acts?

My dog likes to roll on cat poop, roots in the mud like a pig, and has atrocious breath that may or may not be related to getting into the trash/sanitary napikins/more cat poop.  Different species, different standards.

On the other hand, she spends a fair bit of time trimming the fur between her toes (with her teeth).  So there's definitely some alteration of the basic facts going on even there.

Is it too late to post here?  I've been away, you see.

I once tried to give myself a bikini wax at home after a little too much Jack Daniels, and even with a shot of Jack before each tear-strip, I had to quit after I started bruising.  Although I am blondish, I am also of eastern European descent, so...for lack of a more delicate example, the coarseness of my Natural Area causes me to wear holes in bathing suits.

I shaved for our first wedding anniversary and never looked back.  I mostly did it to give Pedro a little something special but I ended up liking it so much that the only time it's been back to nature was right after my son was born.  I even somehow managed to keep shaving when I was 9 months pregnant.  I realized after the fact that since my mother-in-law witnessed the birth she probably knows a tad more about our sex life than she wanted to.  Unless she thinks they still routinely shave all women for delivery, which Mom says was common practice when my brother and I were born.  Something to do with "hygeine."  Pretty odd for the 70's if you ask me.

I was thinking about getting a Brazilian after Christmas so that I wouldn't have to worry about stubble when this baby is born.  Despite my past experience, I thought it might be less painful at a professional salon, but after reading linnea's description I think I'll pass.

Also I once dated a guy who shaved his chest and I thought it was icky.  I think men should have hair.  If I wanted to sleep with someone with no chest hair, I'd date women.  I mean, at least they have boobies.
Title: Re: ...Brazilian? What the hell?

Yeah, if I have the money I'll get it done again. Ideally I'd like to get laser hair removal. Since I've had no money to go back to the salon, I'm just shaving again.

Yep, isn't it weird that they used to shave women for childbirth? It was just this retarded thing that the doctors wanted. I don't think it had as much to do with hygiene as with convention, since women who weren't shaved could also have normal healthy deliveries. My mom told me about the shaving when I was little, and I was horrified. She said that it itched horribly when it was growing back.
