right now my parents are in Europe for their 25th anniversary. Umm, I am basically hanging out here and working. Went to the beach for several days with some guys, that was nice-- private community, long beach walks discussing silly deep things, some drinking, won 5 dollars in poker. My best friend, who goes to the Air Force Academy, is here right now-- but he's only in Charlotte for another week before going back (or rather, going to an Air Force Base in Nevada for training stuff.) Once he leaves I'll be stuck between two groups of friends-- one that basically just smokes pot 24/7, and one that is a bunch of Drama Kids, basically really lame, spoiled, silly, petty people. So.
If I don't have work, which is a distinct possibility with the weird random days off I'm getting lately, I might go to the beach with my friend and his family this week, just for a few days. Later on this summer, I am driving up to Williamsburg to visit a girl who is awesome that I haven't seen in 2 years. I also may go up to DC, as a good friend of mine from High School is doing an internship up there, and 3 or 4 of my friends from St Louis live there.
But mostly, playing Rise of Nations with my brother, posting on TOUAMB, playing guitar, making burritos.
PS I am going to try really hard to go see SLINT up in Chapel Hill at the end of the month.

Probably nothing. Maybe the nude beach.
-
I got nothin'. The good part about funemployment is sleeping in late and staying up late on the internets. The bad part is that you never have any money. Maybe next February I'll go someplace tropical, maybe get certified to dive, maybe learn how to surf. Barring that, I might go to Alaska and take the ferry around, which is the poor man's cruise. I could get certified to dive out there, too.
Basically this is all contingent on me finding a job that allows me a couple weeks' vacation, and the ability to save up for such a vacation.
It's fun to think about and plan.
-
Dang, I forgot to plan a summer vacation again.
I can never get the Technical Staff to take a summer vacation because he wants to save all his vacation time for cross-country skiing. I get a weekend at the beach in the spring and one in the fall. And at this year's spring weekend at the beach, we found out that the inn we stay at is closing down. Which is a disaster because there are so few places that allow dogs.
So, yeah, I also got nuthin'.

I haven't done much traveling yet, but I've got a week+-trip to California planned: first, to Rowland Heights, to hang out for a weekend with some of my knuckleheads from young times, then taking the train to San Luis Obispo to spend a week with my grandparents in Cambria. I am very much looking forward to sun (especially now that it's monsoon season down here), relaxation, and maybe some elephant seals.
-
Rowland Heights is just up the 57 freeway from me. Want to shank up, errrrr...meet up?
Iunno, man, I have misgivings.
Seriously, though, let me check my schedule. We might be able to work something out.
-
Don't worry, V. He won't show up. But he'll have a really good story about why not.
-
I am taking a friend who doesn't have a car to California on Aug 1. We may go early and see Daft Punk at Red Rocks.
This is not really that good a trip though. I will drive to Boulder in one day, possibly see Daft Punk, definitely stay at a friends house. That friend will go with to San Fran. We will hang out for 2-3 days, try and go to San Diego or Seattle or Portland or somewhere cool that we have enough money to get to for a day or two, go back to Boulder for a day or two and then drive home. I really like road trips so I will love it, but it isn't really a "vacation". There are no plans/ I will be sleeping in the car/ etc.
I will come back way more worn out than when I left.

If you go to Portland, let me know and I'll check my schedule - maybe we can get loaded.

It will be between the fourth and sixth of August. Very short notice, if it happens at all.

That's the middle of my second week of work, unfortunately - maybe next time.
-
Tomorrow I'm going to Seattle for a week. It would be exciting if it wasn't the place I lived for the past 18 years until I moved to California last October. But it should be fun! I'm going camping on the coast with some friends.

I would put forth that I would show up to such an event and at the very least, stammer a few terse words to the table.
-
I will look forward to going to the lake, then I will get there and the water will be smelly and I will get all slimy from algae, and then I will be happy to be back home in air conditioned comfort.
Also, maybe some camping.

We've already been to the beach. Details and cute kid pictures on the blog (http://www.bigfool.com/foolblog/archive/2007_06.htm#000891) (and I worked an Achewood reference in there).
We may go again in September. With the kids not in real school yet, it's just as easy to go in the shoulder months when the weather's still decent and prices are more reasonable.

Well, we came back from th cruise and I'm now wishing the next one was booked already.
Had a lot of fun, here's some of the things still dancing in my head at work today.
Coco Cay, Bahamas. (http://s192.photobucket.com/albums/z120/Asherdan93/?action=view¤t=IMG_0734.jpg) Royal Caribbean's private island.
St. Thomas (http://s192.photobucket.com/albums/z120/Asherdan93/?action=view¤t=IMG_0916.jpg), where we went on a submarine ride and bought opals.
Anguilla (http://s192.photobucket.com/albums/z120/Asherdan93/?action=view¤t=IMG_1015.jpg), where we swam with dolphins and enjoyed a private beach.
I guess I'm pretty much ruined by spoiling now and am eagerly waiting the rate and schedule books for '08 so we can plot out Alaska.
Wow!! You guys must have had a fabulous time. Those pictures are gorgeous. How come you and the Asherbaby et al aren't in the pictures?

Your little ones are adorable. Again, great summer vacation photos. Did you get any pictures of the obnoxious high schoolers and the tiny ##### that they have fashioned for each leg, since they couldn't wear their ##### any lower?

Ooh, been there. We had our honeymoon on St. Croix, but one day we took a ferry over to St. Thomas for the day. St. Croix is much quieter, so on the whole I'm glad we were there for the week, but it was fun to go to a busy shopping town for a day. Also, cruise ships are really large. I think I already posted my cuss-filled post about how much I hate getting patients off a cruise ship. Basically the security dudes on cruise ships are dicks. "Uh...YOUR cruise ship passenger had a heart attack. YOU called us to help you. Can we board the fuckin' ship already? Why won't you let us on?" INSANITY.

So, uh, my parents and I went on a day trip to New Orleans last week. This was generally fun, except for the part where the first night out I got food poisoning. The rest can be summed up in three words: "misery," and "subconjunctival hemorrhage. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subconjunctival_hemorrhage)"
We did go to the aquarium, though, which was fun. I'm thankful that I've retained my ability to enjoy childlike glee when looking at a weird animal. ("Holy crap, look at those jellies! Aren't they totally weird? ... hey, over there, leafy sea dragons! Aww man!!")

I don't know if it counts, but I went to Okemah, Ok to see the Woody Guthrie Folk Festival this weekend.

LUCKYYYYYYY!!! Man, that sounds awesome. One of my favorite bands, Son Volt, has an album that was inspired by Woody Guthrie ("Okemah and the Melody of Riot" is the album name). One of my all-time favorite songs is Bandages & Scars, and the lyrics on that song include, "the words of Woody Guthrie ringing in my head..."
I remember seeing a poster that features a quote by Guthrie. I should look around on the internets or eBay to find the poster, because I love it.
I hate a song that makes you think that you are not any good. I hate a song that makes you think that you are just born to lose. Bound to lose. No good to nobody. No good for nothing. Because you are too old or too young or too fat or too slim too ugly or too this or too that. Songs that run you down or poke fun at you on account of your bad luck or hard traveling. I am out to fight those songs to my very last breath of air and my last drop of blood. I am out to sing songs that will prove to you that this is your world and that if it has hit you pretty hard and knocked you for a dozen loops, no matter what color, what size you are, how you are built, I am out to sing the songs that make you take pride in yourself and in your work.
-
I dig on some Son Volt, but manly Trace.
Also, that is a really good quote. I had heard the last couple sentences, but just heard the first couple this weekend. This was my sixth consecutive Woody Guthrie festival, it is kind of me and my dads bonding time for the year, you could say.
My favorite is the old classic "i ain't a communist necessarily, but i been in the red all my life." If you like Woody Guthrie at all I recommend getting the 3 disc Library of Congress recordings. They are a-mazing.

My wife and daughters spent a month in Ohio and I went out for two weeks. I got to go to two Indians games, Cedar Point, the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo and Rainforest, saw some old friends, saw my parents and sister, and generally had the good old midwestern time I've been missing for 5 years now.
Also, my kid got to see, in the woods and not the zoo, and owl, some bats, deer, fawns, a skunk and a raccoon. There are no woodland critters in Hawaii so that was worth it right there.
-
Well, Kauai has chickens. They're not very exotic, I'll admit.

My neighbor has friggin' chickens. I've seen pretty largish pigs and babies by the side of the road, too. Mongeese. Rats. Mice. Chameleons and Geckos. Cane Toads and Coqui Frogs. Birds (including peacocks). Feral Cats. That's almost all the animals here.
Some Mouflon Sheep and Axis deer on other islands. That pretty much covers the terrestrial critters.
-
We had our honeymoon on Kauai (almost 10 years ago!!). We'd packed a lunch and went hiking into some forest off the Wailua river. No habitation, up hills, over dale. Finally settled down for a picnic. After a while, we heard some sort of slithering, cracking, rustling from a wall of bamboo-ish shrubbery. Stacey was terrified, certain that some sort of Komodo dragon-like beast would make a meal of us. After a moment, a shivering branch of low-hanging bamboo was thrust aside by a black and orange rooster. He strutted out and kept a beady eye on us while his 5 hens scuttled across the clearing.

Very minor necro:
I'm leaving in about fifteen minutes for the airport, and from there I'm flying to California to go see friends and family for a while. I will probably have sporadic 'net access for about a week and a half, but I'll return by the 14th or so.
Whoo, fun!
-
I have spent the morning planning a trip. It's gonna be great!
-
I'm still working on the Chicago plans. We finally booked a hotel. It's the Four Points (http://www.fourpointschicago.com/). Most people who stayed there did not hate it.
-
We stayed at the Essex Inn (http://www.essexinn.com/) last month. It was reasonably nice and reasonably priced.
-
I'm going to Florida in two weeks. Perhaps Georgia as well. I would love to meet any TOUAMBers along the way.
-
We are being boho hippies, staying in a youth hostel, going on walking tours and pub crawls. Rock!
-
well, if you drive up to virginia first, and then down... I would be on the way! Also, golfhaus!
-
Last night I inherited three teenagers (one a distant relation to Spouse) whose other accommodations fell through. Turns out the Aunt they had scheduled to stay with decided to extend her stay in Hawaii despite committing to let them stay with her (!) so they could have a surf holiday.
Now THAT's a Hunt's Move. Awesome that you guys came through in the clutch though.
-
I want to learn how to surf so much. The beach is...
I want to say "coded in my DNA," but that is not possible.
The Beach is my Natural Habitat, as set in my psyche by early-life experience. Being at the beach...
for me it is like when Roast Beef and Ray and Teodor have the dong-weights. It is like that.
-
I would, except that Orange County is very far away. Also, if I get 3 days off in a row I'm going to go to the beach with my family. and if I get 4, I am going to Virginia to visit my friend (who I dreampt was pregnant last night, thanks to JL.)
