Title: Happy Labor Day '07!
Post by: lprkn on September 03, 2007, 07:28:04 pm
Anybody do anything special?

This (http://www.flickr.com/photos/lprkn/sets/72157601844593677/) is what I did. I am spending today recovering.

Where is that?

I am not feeling well, so I'm spending the day switching between marathons of Dirty Jobs and Anthony Bourdain.  This is so many zillions of times better than usual weekday daytime TV that I am going to call it not such a bad day.

It's in North/Central Idaho, along the Oregon border.

Dirty Jobs is definitely a good way to spend your day. Although if you are having stomach problems, I'd strongly suggest you stay away from the episode where they tan hides. The Discovery channel is one of the reasons I don't have cable, because I'd spend all day watching it instead of doing more productive things, like posting on a messageboard about cartoon cats.

Especially that.

I am spending the day laboring, more or less.

I got hit in the testicles with a basketball during a game of hoss. I think that's a great metaphor for Labor Day.

I'm hanging out with my womb-mate, Kellichou. We got boba (bubble) tea (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boba_tea) and now I'm watching her and her SO brew a batch of Belgian beer.

It turns out that if you are feeling queasy you also have to be careful about Anthony Bourdain. I could have lived without the famous Irish chef stuffing lamb bladders, especially when he said that the whiff of uric acid was a good thing about them. Um, no thanks.

And again: I didn't have to stuff them; they weren't empty.

I had a party at my new home with my in-laws and some friends to celebrate Pedro's birthday.  He was actually born on Labor Day 1979, so four years out of seven his birthday falls on the holiday weekend (if you count Friday as part of the weekend).  Then we chilled out and watched some of Season 10 of The Simpsons, which Pedro got with the gift card his parents gave him and which is the first season we didn't see much of when it was actually on.

Also, I felt Baby Bo kick this afternoon.  I have felt little flutters before now but today was the first actual "hey!  i'm in here!" kind of movement.  It was neat.

Also, as I was typing this, I had to run into the bedroom and comfort my child, who either bit his tongue as he was drifting off to sleep or had his first night terror (Pedro has them and they tend to be hereditary).  When I scooped him up he was trembling and he drifted back to sleep in my arms with tears still running down his cheeks.

This is the terrible wonder of being a parent: at the moments when you feel most helpless, your child relies on you most completely.

Went for a walk around lunch time, completely forgetting that every fuck*ng restaurant is closed today. Finally found a place that was open, had some pizza. Came home and watched the first 5 episodes of Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex: 2nd Gig. Then dinner and laundry. Woo, laundry.

I made barbeque beef brisket for the first time - it's really easy to make (300F for four hours, slice and lather with homemade BBQ sauce the last hour) and was insanely delicious.

I gave blood and then we went to the mall to avail ourselves of the air conditioning.

I sat around, read, played Bioshock, taught my roommate Lithium on the guitar, reviewed an EP for the radio station, ate, and decided which classes I am going to go sit in on tomorrow to be potential replacements for Spanish.

Also, I read my friend Karl's webcomic. He wrote it back in high school (which was a while ago for him) but I love it. I laughed so hard at it that...

just, wow. I laughed so hard. (http://www.angelfire.com/comics/moldovaandgruel/)

I worked until midnight, now going to school at 8am, and if your basketball lands on my lawn one more time, I'm kicking it over the fence.

I sat around, watched a couple of episodes of Arrested Development, played video games a lot (Phoenix Wright and Paper Mario), and went to Albertson's to get some ice cream.  Wooo!  Labor Day!

I mowed the lawn, watched the Nats-giraffe game, took the kids to the park, and cooked burgers on the grill.  Not bad.

I quite enjoyed this.
