Kerry looks on as student is tazed by police at UF. The student asks Kerry why he conceded the election so early, and is quickly jumped and taken to the ground by police, yells "I DIDNT DO ANYTHING WRONG, WHAT ARE YOU DOING? DONT TASER ME, BRO, OWWWW AHHHH" meanwhile Kerry tells everyone to calm down and then answers his question. The andrew meyer was then taken to county jail.
So yea, this country scares the crap out of me.
-
what scares the crap out of me, truly, is...
last year, when a kid got tasered in a similar circumstance, and then was tasered again and again for not standing up... AFTER BEING TASERED, my roommate watched, laughed, and said "what an asshole, he deserved it."
This guy... he is a good guy. I loved that kid. But... WHAT. THE. FUCK.
-
Both of you are sooo right.
Also, inev, I don't know what you mean with your signature but Bob Dylan is right, He knows more about you then you could ever hope to know about him. Can't you see the picture he is drawing for you.
Seriously though, I agree completely with Dylan there. Also, I found the part about pictures awesome because he wrote many a great song by taking speed, chain smoking marijuana and looking at collages. You can really see this in Bob Dylan's 115th dream. Also because words are what got him where he was and he was saying truth was a picture. Anyhow, I have that film but haven't watched it in five years, thanks for bringing it up--probably watch it tonight.
-
This kind of shit pisses me off to no end. It seems every time I turn around there's some innocent civilian getting shot in the face with a goddamn M16 because an overweight SWAT team broke into the wrong house to serve a marijuana arrest. I'm all for law and order, but stop giving overweight fuck*ng hillbillies weapons and an excuse.
Maybe if all they were allowed to carry was billy clubs, at least they'd have to get up close and personal, and then strike repeatedly, thus ensuring they at least know that the person they're harming is a middle-aged father of three, and not a 250-pound drug dealer.
Also, no more high&tights on police officers. Where do you think you are, the 1s Marine Division? Grow a moustache instead, at least it's traditional.
-
what is this "high&tight"? basically a buzzed head?
-
In Jarhead (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0418763/), pretty much everybody has one.
*edited for linkage
-
Did I miss something? Was he arrested for asking a question at a question and answer session?
-
At a friends house today they said he asked a question after question time had ended??
-
When I read about this I thought it was just an over-reaction, something bad but nothing this crazy. The fact that they used the taser as a threat is the worst part for me, it's just nuts: there was four of them, they would have been able to hold him down and cuff him without resorting to that sort of violence.
Another vid (http://youtube.com/watch?v=IATPoHdpak0&mode=related&search=) with a bit better quality.
At the end of the day though I guess its just a couple of rent a cops who are on too much of a power trip and too simple minded to concieve that violence should not be your first resort when dealing with people.
Or another moral is: Do Not Question The System. We're the land of the free, got that? Questioning it sounds damn anti-american to me.
-
On the CBS radio news the version they're telling is that he kept yelling about his question, wouldn't stop talking when asked, wouldn't leave, and was warned before he was tazed. Of course they don't play any actual audio of the event or anything.
-
See this is technically true, and I can fully the support them removing him, the dude was being an annoying douche and it's well within their right to remove him. But uh... tasering him on the ground is a bit of different matter.
-
Apparently instead of asking a question and sitting down, he asked a question and then continued making statements, then once his mic was cut began yelling, then when he was asked to sit down continued yelling, then when he was told to leave ran away from security and continued yelling.
Do I think he should have been tazed? No. Do I think he was a giant douche? Yes. Is he a martyr? No. Not in any way.
-
WE HAVE A RIGHT TO BE ASSHOLES TO PUBLIC OFFICIALS IN THIS COUNTRY, GODDAMNIT!
-
You have a right to be an asshole in your own forum, when the audience is there to see you being an asshole.
You have a right to be an asshole in your house.
Outside of that, if you interrupt a public forum, fail to comply with an order of law enforcement, violate the speech rights of someone by interrupting, taking the mike, or causing disturbance you are outside the law.
I find it interesting that the mode of protest now seems to have shifted significantly - whether out of laziness, frustration, or fragmentation I'm not sure. It seems to me that now, an awful lot of asshattery and/or criminal behavior (the riots around the economic summits and destruction of McDonalds franchises come to mind) has come to be more the norm versus demonstration, grassroots political organization, civil disobedience and the like.
The problem is, for those who aren't committed to a side, it doesn't really draw people to your side, and the people it does draw could be assholes too.
Although it's not a right/left problem, it appears that this happens more on the left than the right, though.
-
Four guys carrying the dude out against his will? Reasonable.
Tasering? Not... not so much.
But I do kind of understand the desperation factor in protests, lately, in just being a criminal asshat because... I mean... the entire idea of late 60s/early 70s protests have been pretty strictly co-opted. Started before they're started.
Everyone knows what's going to happen instantly now, we're at a point where the tightly constructed counter-protest shows up hours before the actual protest. The Fox News trucks are on the scene already practicing their dimissive reporting before the signs are even painted.
You get your permit by agreeing to be fenced into a little jail a mile away from whatever you're protesting or else the police are there to break it up before it gets a chance to start.
No momentum whatsoever. The people who DO organize mass protests, numbers no one can ignore, are so obsessed with coming off as squeaky-clean that no real sense of urgency or power or threat to power can actually be mobilized... so that they can protect THEIR political careers and the reputations of whatever "Names" they get to attend.
Everything is vetted, now, if you want the people who can get you people and coverage to show up.
Not to mention that we're living in an age where 83% of mass rallies are cynically and tightly-constructed parodies of mass rallies... grassroots is just a buzz word, now, an illusion, now, a joke now. No one would believe a huge event was actually grassroots even if it actually was.
Any hint of an opposition or counter-culture is quickly infiltrated by people trying to make a buck off it or... use it as a vehicle toward their ultimately much more moderate goals or... is overrun with people just wanting to do walking art installations or break some windows.
The idea of collective effort was made a farce by popular culture... and I think on purpose. Honestly espousing the idea that you can make large changes to the American system without giving up most of your ideals to get INTO the system is treated with all the dignity of a guy saying he saw a UFO.
At best, a pity... mostly a laughing condescension... occasionally a more vicious direct question of sanity.
Not to mention that the more teevee stations there are, the more internet news sites, radio stations, newspapers there are... the more we are innoculated with the idea that NOTHING is true. NOTHING is believable. EVERYTHING is a lie or a scam or, at least, potentially so.
Solid-thinking men and women are paralyzed by the realization that there's a good chance that what they strongly believe in probably isn't true or, at least, the whole thing's so mindbendingly complex that maybe they should just go about their own lives.
But more than that?
More than any of that?
To have a legitimate protest culture, you need a large and functioning middle class... a large base of people both educated enough to want to change things in a positive manner but comfortable enough financially to take time off their lives to do it.
Car loans. No health care. Student loans. Endless troubles, a suffocation of obligations.
Most of the people who could be effectiving change strongly and reasonably are too busy keeping head above water to even UNDERSTAND what they could do, let alone CONSIDER doing it.
So you're left with odd collections of con artists, street performers and strict crazies.
This kid was a bit unhinged, it sounds like, so of course he's not going to act sanely.
That's the point.
The sane-but-informed are so locked up by doubt and obligation that they CAN'T make any moves.
The momentum of our culture demands it, basically.
-
If you give the authorities a toy, they will use it. Yes, the four security guards should have just carried the guy out. But they had tasers, so... they had tasers!
Same thing goes for local police departments that get SWAT units, when they almost never have actual armed standoffs that call for such things. They sit around going unused, so eventually someone authorizes their use for crimes that don't really call for it. Then they break down your door and shoot you accidentally when they actually wanted the house across the street.
-
The clapping, and guys sitting in the seats next to him smiling as he gets tasered really eats at me.
It makes me want to hide in my house and not mingle with the rest of you sick fucks (you in this case being anyone that isn't inside my head. You're all suspect.)
-
The Camp for Climate Action by Heathrow earlier this summer was a pretty fine example of genuinely grass-roots mass protest. I had a wonderfully well-observed further remark to make on the matter but I got distracted and it popped out of my head. Alas.
The police action there, though, did pretty well destroy the part of me that used to be surprised by stories like this one, national differences aside. Ah, how I miss the days when my perceptions of the police as an institution were shaped entirely by children's television...
-
See but there's the point.
I'm a news junkie... a mostly left-leaning news junkie, no less... and I have no idea what The Camp For Climate Action is or that there WAS a police action, Ruta.
Back when there was one culture... at least one "mainstream" culture... you generally knew where you were and where you stood, y'know. We're now in the midst of a Crisis on Infinite Cultures. Everyone's fighting for their exact tiny pidgeon-holed point of view and nobody's ever gonna find enough people who all exactly agree on a positive to get anything done anymore.
We all have our own news sources, we can configure our own news feeds, everything is true, anything is true, nothing is true, nothing is true.
If there's no newsworthy faces attached to force these things to be covered, it didn't happen. And if there was anyone associating themselves with it of fame, it was so toned down to get their handlers to agree to it that it probably wasn't much of anything.
And there's not even "an underground" anymore to make everyone aware of the things that aren't covered popularly.
There's no overground either.
Just ten million buzzing points of view, y'know, all cancelling each other out and all that the establishment voice has to do is be loud enough to speak over all those self-cancelling voices.
Big Brother's a lot more cost effective when it doesn't have to be the only voice or even the main voice... when it simply has to be the Approved Voice in a sea of doubts and scandals and half-lies and gossip and games.
These are venture capitalists, after all, they know how to get the job done for less.

The question isn't, of course, what matters.
The question is, what's possible, without giving up your life, your freedom, your soul or what you consider to be your responsibilities.
It's harder and harder to be both a functioning member of the human race AND an agent of positive change.
There's not a whole lot of middle-ground options without a mass movement to join and generally speaking, y'know, to abandon your parents and your children, your wives and husbands, your brothers and your sisters, all your worldly debts personal or economic... that's at best asking you to be Christ or Buddha and in most cases asking you to declare yourself insane.
How do you get experience without a job, y'know, if you can't get a job without experience?
How can you be an iconoclast without a movement and how can you have a movement without iconoclasts?
A set of questions which basically leaves you with... the only people ready to act are well-meaning but mentally-imbalanced kids who'll scream 'til they get tasered or people hiding in the woods with guns, waiting for Jesus.
-
The only thing you can truly exert influence over is yourself. Treat other people the way you want to be treated (and correct them when they don't), and live your life as though you're modeling appropriate behavior for the rest of us. The 7-habits guy calls it working within your circle of influence. If everyone did it, we'd all be better off. We'd be a lot better off than we are even if just we angst-ridden middle classers did it.
And pass the idea on. I'm pretty sure the 7-habits guy got the idea from that Jewish carpenter, but its pretty clever.
-
We all have our own news sources, we can configure our own news feeds, everything is true, anything is true, nothing is true, nothing is true.
QFT. I can't remember the last time I watched CBS, NBC, or ABC to get my news. My top three news sources are:
1) The Yahoo! News blurb on their front page
2) Countdown with Keith Olbermann
3) The Daily Show with Jon Stewart
There's a lady in my office who has agreed with pretty much everything Bush the Junior has done the last few years. Everything. Thinks we should go ahead and wrap up the rest of the Middle East while we're there. A Baptist church and a Starbucks on every desert corner. She watches the news each night, I watch the news each night. She learns about current events, I learn about current events. And we come up with completely different ideas about it all, ideas we each form, in part, based on the news we watch.
I still feel that the only way any of us will come close to being happy with our government is if we break the nation up into smaller regions, so that a North Dakota senator can't legislate for Vermont, and a New England liberal can't stop Mississippi from doing something because it pisses HIM off.

what is this "high&tight"? basically a buzzed head?
Check this out. (http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&q=high+tight+haircut&btnG=Search+Images&gbv=2) It's when the lower portion of the skull is shaven extremely closely, but there is still a small amount of hair on the top of the head. My ex was Army and was extraordinarily fussy about his H&T. He wouldn't let me near him to cut it, he had an ongoing quest to find barbers near our house that could execute a flawless H&T for less than ten dollars. I helped him Bic the shaven parts, though, so the effect of the cut would last longer.
There are some men who look extremely hot in a high & tight, but imho only if they're cut and clean-cut to boot. I ogle them shamelessly. ((edit: yowza (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/1/1c/Soldier_running_in_water.jpg/180px-Soldier_running_in_water.jpg)!))

that is not a fortunate hairstyle.

I completely agree. Socks are right out. Fellas, have the decency to take off your socks. It just looks incongruous. I ain't care if they let athletes wear leg warmers. After all, Pat and Rod wear their cop workboots with white socks and nothing else save the police hat. I should probably just Google this, but how on earth did "cop" become slang for a police officer?
-
How about Snopes. (http://www.snopes.com/language/acronyms/cop.asp) Or the Online Etymology Dictionary. (http://www.etymonline.com/index.php?search=cop&searchmode=none)
C.O.P. could very well be some nifty government acronym for your friend's job title, but I think it's pretty well established that "cop" is not an acronym.
-
Almost every story that derives a normal English word from an acronym is a legend. There might be exceptions I am not thinking of but it should be your first assumption in the absence of very reliable evidence to the contrary.

HA! HAHAHAHAA! What a fuck*ng tool. News Flash, douche: Tasering Hurts, it can immobilize people, and that's why law enforcement uses it. Wasn't this the same man who also said that "abortion is never necessary to save the mother's life"? That motherfucker should do such as basic fact checking before he opens his foul mouth. I'll have him tell my friends who went through police academy or state trooper training that they're "wimps" and that tasering "barely even hurts". They have to get tasered as part of their training (at least in Alaska they do, I don't know about the other states). Very few people can speak while being tasered, but one officer was able to shriek "FUCKFUCKFUCKFUCKGETITOFFMESTOPPP!". We had a photo of his face mid-taser at the hall. Good times.

There's a reason they're not called "nonlethal weapons" anymore, after all.
-
There's a reason they're not called "nonlethal weapons" anymore, after all.
Speaking for precision in language - its probably "less-lethal-than-firearms weaponry". Its nice for the police to have an option between harsh language and punching your ticket, but they shouldn't need to escalate past mob-and-cuff when they have the tactical advantage those campus cops did. Although the douche was pretty sizeable. Hopefully the media won't be onto the next shiny bauble by the time the investigation into the incident is published.
