Title: Wish list
Post by: linnea on November 23, 2007, 06:44:40 am
I'd like to post a crazy wish list thread, since it is the holidays and all. Just post some of the shit that you want, the more ridiculous the better. Nobody is going to buy me stuff off this list, but it's fun to dream. I'll go first.

I want a job on the mainland that will reunite me with my wife and kids as soon after the first week of January as possible.

I would just buy some crazy computer stuff.

Mac Pro with 4-500 GB Harddrives, 4 gb ram, tv tuner
32ish inch panel tv, that would be the monitor
Nicer receiver
4 usb video game controllers
A couple months of netflix (so I could get all episodes of simpons, seinfeld, curb your enthusiasm, arrested development, trailer park boys and a lot of movies, including big lebowski, every dylan biography and all woody allen films and put them on those harddrives)
2-500 gb external harddrives (I like to back up my files well, only two of these will actually have novel material)

for the most amazing entertainment center ever.

250-gb laptop harddrive
Couple Wii games and remotes
Fender american made p-bass
cheap electric guitar/amp
cheap acoustic
keyboard
possibly better version of current bass amp

That is all I could ever want at this time

Oh a real nice bubbler?
Maybe OiNK back?

Edit:

Case of Bombay Sapphire.
Case of Knob Creek.
Case of Jameson.
A lot of Tonic and Ginger Ale.  (that shit gets expensive, for real)
Carton of Pall Malls

Um.

Basically a bunch of guitars. And drums. maybe a sax, and books about how to play the sax. But at this point in my life I wouldn't have anywhere to put that stuff.
A lot of good records, preferably both on CD and LP. But... the fun part is looking for them and buying them.
DVDs of movies which I like.
To be honest, a wattage upgrade for the radio station I work at would rule. but we have found out that due to FCC regulations it is never going to happen (our signal would interfere with other stations.)
A good light coat.
some more sweaters like this one I used to have, I don't know how to describe it, but now it's all beaten to hell and the sleeves are too short.
maybe some sort of non-dorky looking goggles, because when it's below 50 my eyes stop watering and don't stop until March when it is warm again.
heavy guitar picks (I should pick these up tomorrow)
some new glasses. I know what the ones I want look like, but I don't know who makes them. They are kind of 50's style, like the thick-plastic-frame ones that are popular, but slightly bigger. my friend Karl has some really great ones that he bought from a store in Boston that has vintage/out-of-production frames.
a turntable, amp, and speakers for my dorm room. I found a cheap turntable online with a built-in amp... but I am worried it will ruin my records with its cheapitude.
a copy of "Crazy Rhythms" by The Feelies in any format. I have mp3s, but it's not the same. It is out of print, and has been since the 80's I think. I guess I could get it from ebay, but that is not fun, see above.

While we're on impossible things, I guess to see The Replacements, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, The Ramones, Minor Threat, The Cure, Pixies, Fugazi, My Bloody Valentine, Nirvana... any of my favorite bands in concert, and alive/still together.
Also, see really influential/amazing movies without having the ending or important plot points ruined. Also, without having seen the movies influenced by them. "Whoa! Soilent green... is people!" This would be great for music, too. I want to be blown away by Elvis' hips or Charlie Parker playing a 13th chord.

It would be best if I could get a Second Date. But I think that I have a good chance of this? Or else, no chance. Last time, circumstances intervened and she had to cancel. But I am not sure if this was actually a subtle message.

A four-bedroom mid-century ranch house in a quiet neighborhood within five miles of Pedro's office building.  Paid in full.  (Such things do exist, but there are none for sale at the moment and we can't afford it anyway.)

I don't even care if it's a piece of crap.  If it were paid for, we could afford to renovate it ourselves.  Actually, I think I'd rather prefer that.

Alternatively, if someone could pay off my credit cards, student loans, and car payment, that would be great.

I want to stop having so many migraines, and figure out what I am going to do when I grow up. Hmm, now that I put it that way, I wonder if the two are related.
Title: Re: Wish list

Wait, let me be more specific:

I wish that the new drug I am about to start taking will stop my migraines and cause no side effects like the last one did. And I wish that one of the three editors who is looking at my book right now will be crazy about it and buy it.

There. You know, when you make those vague wishes in stories you always get into trouble, you know?

Anybody else have one?

I had one, but I really hate Amazon and so I try to avoid buying shit from them.
**EDIT: The kitty spa you linked (http://gadgets.boingboing.net/2007/11/23/cat-spa-might-actual.html) is pretty damn awesome. I'd probably buy it direct instead of through Amazon, but still. Totally sweet.

JL used to hate Amazon (http://touamb.com/index.php/topic,350.msg4782.html#msg4782). What happened to you, man. You changed.

What's so bad about Amazon?
Title: Re: Wish list
Post by: jay-ell on November 23, 2007, 07:39:40 pm
I got really bad customer service from them consistently over a period of several months.  Getting the wrong items, "in stock now" items taking six weeks to arrive, at one point they double-charged my credit card for no apparent reason (once at the time of order, again when it item shipped).  I swore off, but have gradually come back into the fold since they have started not being dicks about things.

I guess the problems I had had with them, in retrospect, were growing pains on their part from being relatively new to the thing about selling more than just books.  I guess they've got that all worked out now.

Still, thethingsIwant.com is pretty cool.  Not everything I want is available on Amazon.com (a large stash of Manos del Uruguay wool, anyone?).  I might have to reopen the old account.

Ash, that's awesome that you guys don't want for much. I know it's kind of weak for me to start a blatant consumerist thread around the same time as the Buy Nothing thread, but admittedly there's a bunch of stuff I want. Not much that I really need, except savings, a better place to live and my debt paid off.
Title: Re: Wish list
Post by: theinevitable on November 23, 2007, 10:07:05 pm
yeah, I realized in the process of making my list that... it is 90% stuff that I can buy for myself pretty easily if I just budget my money. The issue is that most of my funds go to eating out, movies, CDs and LPs. And I enjoy doing things with my friends more than I enjoy owning, say, a new coat. Other things I enjoy more than buying more CDs: buying my family Christmas presents. I am probably going to work at a summer camp this summer, and I know they pay below minimum wage because it's a contract thing where you get room and board for the whole summer... but I feel like I will have a reasonable amount of cash at the end of that, at the end of which I can buy things for myself. Or, you know, save it for the school year.
Title: Re: Wish list
Post by: jay-ell on November 23, 2007, 10:34:14 pm
Yeah, see, my actual wish list is comprised of things that I could buy for myself if I really, really wanted to.  I have been told (by my mother) that it is far too modest and I should either add more stuff or find bigger, more expensive, more frivolous stuff.

I just feel bad asking people to get me stuff that I wouldn't buy on my own if it weren't for Christmas being right around the corner.  I mean, honestly if I weren't spending my money on stuff for other people I'd probably just go buy this stuff for myself.
Title: Re: Wish list
Post by: theinevitable on November 23, 2007, 10:38:43 pm
oh, see. I always feel bad when my parents ask for a list of stuff I would like for X-mas, and it ends up being 20 CDs, 10 dvds, and "sweaters." I feel like that makes the whole thing really boring. And... kind of equivalent to them just giving me money.
At the same time, if I don't give them a list, I end up with a bunch of stuff I don't want or need.

I guess I took it literally. You don't 'wish' for things you can get.

You wish for things you would need major magical or divine intervention to get; not things you can actually get on your own, right?

There are things I'd like, but nothing I wouldn't trade for what I actually need.

Exactly.  A wish list, in my opinion, is a compendium of your wildest and most unrealistic dreams. I usually throw a few other items in there, like a $25 tube of L'Occitane hand cream. That is what my wish lists to my family always looked like... a Mercedes, a pet pony, a Ducati 748, a Sisters of Mercy CD, a new sweater.
Title: Re: Wish list

See, that's where I was going with the whole "new house, no debt" thing.

The day I posted that message, incidentally, my best friend (unbeknownst to me) bought a house that fits my description exactly.  I knew she'd been looking, but she was looking for split-levels and ended up getting a gorgeous, recently remodeled 1975 ranch.  With a hot tub.

I'm now dealing with a healthy serving of being happy for her tinged with a not insignificant side order of jealousy.  I realize that the recent rash of good fortune she's encountered is no reflection on my worthiness as a human being, but I can't help but wonder when I'm going to get mine.  I mean, I've worked hard, made responsible choices, etc...I have trouble accepting the fact that in the grand cosmic scheme of things, clean living really doesn't get you much besides the satisfaction of knowing that you did the right thing.

Anyway.

Even as a kid my wishlists to my family were always pretty reasonable.  There might be one big item that I knew I wasn't going to get -- not a baby sister or a pony or anything, usually more like a bike or a TV for my bedroom.  I actually got both those things for Christmas, I seriously underestimated my parents' willingness to spoil me.  And I knew by the time I was seven that the Big Red Guy didn't stop by my house.  Maybe he still comes to visit some of you, so I'm not going to say anything untoward, but...he wasn't a holiday special guest star in the house I grew up in.

I didn't know L'Occitane hand cream was so coveted.  Last hotel I stayed at had all L'Occitane stuff at it - everything stunk to me, and the shampoo left my hair more greasy than before I washed it.  I kept the mini bottles of stuff for a while because a small bottle of product is always useful in a handbag, but I smelt it again a while ago and decided it stunk too bad and threw it out.

My wish list is sort of nonexistent.  I like to keep things simple and don't like to acquire a lot of "things."  The SO points out that I never buy myself anything, and it's true, but I don't want for anything either.  I suppose I could want a newer, better iPod, but the one I have now is just fine.

The only thing I'd want that I can't obtain myself is perfect health.  I'd like to live a totally healthy, pain-free life and die quietly in my sleep at 85, but I've got so much shit wrong with me autoimmune wise that I doubt that 's going to go down.

Watch for the stuff you put on your skin (not many people do this, but shit goes through your skin--think of the chemicals we are deliberately putting in our bodies.) and never eat processed foods and you will feel amazing.

And other stuff too, exercise, not eating too much, etc.

Edit: nevermind (http://touamb.com/index.php/topic,4094.msg107882.html#msg107882)  That still might help?  Sorry to hear about your problems.

Sorry to derail things.  Yeah, I take pretty good care of myself, eat really well and such, I'm hyper aware of what I eat.  I use few products since I have hypersensative skin.  Unfortunatly the latest slew of problems are related to the failure of my body to absorb nutrients, leaveing me too week and exhausted to exercise.  I'm already diagnosed with three autoimmune diseases and am currently in testing to find out if I have a fourth.  Which is, well, it sounds like bullshit.  I wouldn't believe it if I weren't experiencing it.  My body is destroying itself.  I feel like shit.  Sucks, since everything else is so good in my life.  I'm trying to be content to burn bright, even if for a short time.

I should have just said "world peace."

I will argue to my grave that weed isn't harmful to you.

I do smoke cigarettes and drink, which are by far worse.  Other than that, maybe a some psychedelics 5-10 times a year (not really harmful at all, maybe make you feel bad when you come down that night) and coke, which I haven't done in at least six months.  So.

But really, cigarettes will kill me and after I go out drinking real hard I feel like shit for two days unless I drink more (which I usually do), but I ain't doing to bad recently.  I still support drugs, though, don't get me wrong.  Also though, I am sure I would feel a ton better if I gave up booze.  I don't even want to consider stopping smoking either cigarettes or herb.  It is basically the thing I enjoy in life.  But you know, I am sure it would make me feel better too (not good enough though).

Wish list-immediate legalization of all drugs.

Unfortunatly the latest slew of problems are related to the failure of my body to absorb nutrients, leaveing me too week and exhausted to exercise.  I'm already diagnosed with three autoimmune diseases and am currently in testing to find out if I have a fourth.

Jesus.  Sounds horrible.

Also, not to be an ass, but there are two misspelled words in the portion of your post that I quoted but when I read it I had no idea.  If I would have written it though, I would have known.  Is that something wrong with me?  Or was I tired?

This has happened to me several times, and it always humbles me. The last time was my junior year in college, where I asked for a Dungeons & Dragons supplement called "The World's Largest Dungeon" -- huge fuck*ng book, tons of maps, $120. There was no way in Hell I actually expected to receive it, but there it was on Christmas morning; I almost wanted to have a talk with my parents about it. ("You know that when I put this down on the list, it was meant to be like how Dad puts down a Ferrari every year, right? You weren't supposed to actually buy it. ... oh sweet Jesus, it's beautiful")

My nephew has autoimmune problems, and his dad (my brother) has Crohn's (http://ventedspleen.com/blog/2007/10/22/24-hour-comic-everything-you-never-wanted-to-know-about-crohns-disease/) so clearly it's part of the genetic code.  He (the nephew) has been getting peptide shots for the last year that seem to be helping, but I don't know enough about it to know if that's a thing that only works if you start it early.  There doesn't seem to be much they can do for my brother besides treat the symptoms.

What I am saying here is that I can empathize, and I am familiar with that particular breed of illness, and it sucks big time.  I hope you find something that works for you and can get it under control soon.

Jeez, smells, that is terrible. I also have hypersensitive skin, but I don't have any autoimmune diseases, just a lot of allergies. Getting a tattoo at a young age probably didn't help matters any, as I think I'm allergic to the ink. I hope that they can find a cure for autoimmune diseases soon.

I just thought of another item that goes on my wish list: one of those  awesome percussion massagers (http://www.brookstone.com/shop/product.asp?product_code=324640&cm_ven=Compare&cm_cat=ChannelAdvisor&cm_pla=GoogleBase&cm_ite=datafeed). I hold a ton of tension right between my shoulder blades and in my trapezius muscles from being a CADD monkey all day. I am going to save up and get one soon. They are magical. I also want a Dvorak keyboard (hardwired so I don't have to fuck around with my damn Windows settings), because I hear they reduce repetitive stress, and maybe that would be better for my upper back.

My SO has a sister who is insane. So her, her partner, the SO, and I all have to get the exact same number of presents or she freaks out. Which makes it really annoying when you only want one fairly expensive thing because the SO's mom will go ahead and buy it for you anyway, along with 2/3rds of your Amazon wish list just to make sure that everybody has the same number of presents.

I... okay... I do my best to be a Sensitive New-Age Guy and stuff here but I gotta say.

I'm still taken aback when an attractive lady admits to having played a D&D-type game.

I guess the one kind of sexism I still have in me is nerd-sexism.

A little place in the back of my mind saying:

"No, no, a good looking girl would never do something like that, they could go and hang around with friends and have pillow fights and stuff, why would they choose to argue over +3 Hats of Vitality (or whatever) with morbidly obese guys in dragon tee-shirts?"

Christ, *I* was a pudgy dude who read comics and everything and the D&D guys still scared me.

I am sorry for this residual bias, Vee. You are an awesome lady and I apologize for any offense.

But... yeah... for a second, my mind was still blown.

My mom buys me whatever I want.  It is okay, but the problem is lots of times I just said I wanted it to not offend her and then I have a bunch of shit I don't use but feel bad about selling or giving away.  This year, as my wish list might indicate, I am going straight computer.  External harddrive, 2gb ram, internal harddrive, rom controllers.

My girlfriend asked me for a Christmas list, actually...

And since we are nearly broke, I only asked for a few books and movies and CDs, told her not to get them for me new... try and get 'em used or something... and told her not to get me all of those things, that they were just ideas and all.

The new MST3K set, the new Film Crew riffmovie "Giant of Marathon", the new Futurama DTV.

A book about Elliott Smith, the new League of Extraordinary Gentlemen book.

The new Neil Young album, a certain Jimi Hendrix album.

I hope she only buys me two or three of these things. I don't need gifts, I just need patience.

Does it help if I confess that I'm pretty fat and have worn dragon T-shirts in the past, LFM? I am really not the slumber-party-having sort of girl in general.

I hope she only buys me two or three of these things. I don't need gifts, I just need patience.

Sentiment seconded. What I need this year more than anything is love, security, and friendship. Material things are nice, but I can buy them myself, and I'll just have to box them up when I hit the road.

The only place I've ever seen a girl in a dragon shit was at a Renaissance Faire and... she didn't look too happy about it, like it was definitely just to make her boyfriend happy. Huh.

I guess that having only lived in a very small Northeastern town and in Los Angeles, the capital of people who think they are cool shit and can make money off that, I haven't had all that much contact with female nerd-culture.

It seems like maybe medium-sized college towns like Austin and Berkeley and Ithaca and Winston-Salem and so on would probably be the places for those things? I've never lived in those places.

I probably would've had sex before I was twenty had I lived in those places. haha.

read in perfect north carolina accent, like from the teammate who said this to me during an everclear run: "And this is winston-salem. You can buy Winstons, and you can buy Salems, BUT YOU WILL NEVER, EVER, BUY WINSTON SALEMS."
I dont know why this left such an impression on me. It was his tone.
