Title: So...What are you wearing?
Post by: side_show on October 31, 2003, 02:07:23 pm
It's Halloween!!!!

What are you wearing?  I'm a punk rock girl - I have a mohawk and blue streaks that look very real as it's a hair extention that I've woven into my own hair, and I'm wearing my Harley Davidson boots and a mini skirt.  As I am usually an alternative-ish girl most of my co-workers have looked at  me questioningly, but not mentioned my costume - I think they're afraid that it's not a costume at all and don't want to insult me.

Interesting side note - no one sat next to me on the bus ride here.

I'm dressed as a late eighties grunge bum. Ripped black jeans, a chenille (sic?!?) jumper with more holes than could be imagine, and trainers that have about 2 weeks left in them.
Oh wait, it's Halloween!? Doh!

Oh, and Harley boots and mini skirt? I demand photographic evidence *ahem*!

I don't have a camera, scanner or any of the nessisary other things required to show you, but it's already been made clear to me that men are enjoying me more than usual - it's note even 9am here and I've already been told "you should dress like that all the time" by quite a few gents.  I'm feeling awfully sexy.

Oh, and I've got a Michael Jackson pin from back when he looked like a human that I've had since I was eight being pinned to my jacket along with a Superman and skater pin.

Punk Rock Girl fetish sites?  URL please?

Seriously, make with the photos before someone gets hurt.  You can't just *describe* a costume like that.  It's uncivilised.

Jough you're the one who hooked my up with my avatar - you know very will that I have neither the knowlege nor the means to show you picture.

The costume judges were just standing behind me, and one of them muttered  to the other: "no, no.  don't ask her - I think those are her regular clothes."  Nice.

I was too lazy to put on my costume this morning, so right now I'm dressed as "sjlimmer."  However, I do have a tiny fez (http://www.mcphee.com/bigindex/current/10776.html) and some fake mustaches (http://www.mcphee.com/bigindex/current/10484.html) in my bag, so that I can pretend to be in costume for the department party this afternoon.  I think I'll be my evil twin, the Shriner.

As usual, I have pondered the costume issue until the 11th hour, and now, I have a party to go to this evening.

I think I will go and buy long hair and a long beard and a volleyball and a red sharpie. Shred up my clothes a little bit and be the Cast Away guy. and Wilson.

The obvious choice of a terrible stereotypical costume for you would be a coconut bra and grass skirt.

Might change into that just now for the last 4 hours or so...
That way I won't be the scared one while watching Ring 2 (not that it's actually scary... mystery... it's a mystery not a horror! jeeeez)

This year I'm going as a burned out old-beyond-her-22-years middle school teacher.

Oh, wait...I just forgot to change out of my work clothes.

Tonight I'm going to see Death Cab for Cutie and Mates of State, and I don't know if costumes are in order for this evening. Maybe if I wasn't going by myself...
Title: So...What are you wearing?

Mite, you're breaking my heart.

If I lived anywhere near whatever city you live in I'd totally go see schlock movies with you.

So even if you're sad and lonely in real life, you still have virtual friends.

Anyway, I'm late to a party with a bunch of old-before-their-time literary hipsters, all dressing as stupid literary characters that I'll never begin to guess ("Don't you get it?  I'm "Stevie," the character in the bar at the beginning of Philip Roth's fourth novel!")

Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

And for the record, I'm going as Jack Gladney.  I'm sure someone here will know who he is and what my costume entails.

Jough, I'm not sure what was meant by your phrase "schlock movies," but Death Cab for Cutie is a rather excellent band; I would assume from the context that Mates of State is also a band (though I have no idea of their relative excellence)
Title: So...What are you wearing?

See, I saw those two titles and just assumed B-Horror-Films.  Especially since people usually use the verb "to see" for films and "to hear" for music.

I'm so not hip with the kids.  Are these like, "National" bands on large labels or are they hip local bands of some city?

-- Jough, so, SO out-of-touch when it comes to contemporary music

After a few discarded ideas and 11th-hour costume shopping, I'm going to be Tim the Sorcerer tonight. I figure it will garner stares from 95% of the population and wild gesticulations and quotes from the other 5%. Also, I get to wear a cape.

jough, download some Death Cab (and if you're into it, some Postal Service) and you'll see that though they mightn't be nationally crazy-go-nuts popular, they orta be.

Awwww, jough that's sweet. Indie bands, schlock movies - I'm up for anything.  :)

And it's not like I'm completely isolated down here. But none of my friends share my taste in music, so I end up being the chick in the corner of the bar with my nose in a book during the set change a lot.

Jough - I'm planning on reading White Noise just as soon as I fight my way through all of Gravity's Rainbow. I take it your costume is a ringing endorsement?

i started handing out gift certs from local prostitutes around 7:30 (i'd run out of "fun-sized" snickers bars). i had a load of gangsters visit me around 9:00, and just had to turn my lights out.

it's amazing what you'll give away when you've got a 9mm pointed at your face.

mrs|Choop said, "Here! Take the sewing machine!" which cursed my costume to the hell of unfinished garbery.

White Noise is my (our?) generation's "Ulysses."  It's masterful, funny, brilliant but down-to-earth.  I'll teach it anytime it's even slightly appropriate.

I can't say I'd recommend it to a middle school crowd, though, even though they'd probably enjoy it, because it's the kind of book that will have you standing before a board of inquiry (have I told the story of when I tried to teach "120 Days of Sodom" in an Intro to Lit course yet?).

Anyway, I hope your Halloween was better than mine "down there."

Not enough emphasis is placed on the "tricks" part of the trick or treat equation so among the fun sized snickers and hershey's kisses a few youngsters walked away with fresh limes.  One even thanked me, being a lime lover.  I'm just thankful none of them were thrown through one of my windows.

~Paul

PS- Ok, i'm not that evil, I gave everybody candy, even the lime recipients.

At the "Fall Festival" (I hate that shit, it's Halloween you assholes) my 10 year old neice asked me in a very serious voice "What's trick or treating like Uncle Paul?"  OMG, we've got an entire generation of children who have never experienced trick or treating.  Is it like this around the entire country?  Trick or treating is pretty much extinct here in Houston.  Of course it's here that a psycho killed his two children on halloween with arsnic laced pixie sticks snuck into the kids goodie bag.  That was back in the 80's.

We had tons of trick or treaters this year.

There was a piece on NPR last night - someone did the research and showed that no kids have ever gotten tainted candy from strangers on Halloween.  It's all urban legends.  The only times it did happen, it was actually someone the kids knew - a father did it once and tried to make it look like it was due to trick or treating.

I guess the lesson is, ONLY take your candy from strangers.

If you actually did this, Jough, you are my god. I mean, more than before.

Anyway, the post-Halloween report... got a pretty goodly load of candy, including some "appropriated" from frosh rooms as a fine for them not being there. That, and we got to show up at the college president's house and demand candy (and get it!), which is why it is awesome to go to a small school.

My Halloween wasn't too bad. Death Cab was awesome, and I met up with some guys who invited me to their party. Since I'm shy and awkward, though, I came home and watched 8 1/2 instead.

But tonight is my Rocktober 32nd Party! Wooo!

You can't see me, but I'm totally down on one knee ready to ask you a question.

I don't, though, because I'm awkward (but not necessarily shy) myself.

Doesn't sound like too bad an All Hallow's Eve, though.  I spent half of Sam Hein covered in a mixture of real and false blood, neither of which originally belonged to me.

Perhaps "covered" is overstating things.  It wasn't Carrie-esque or anything.  But I was reminded why I should never hang around drunk strangers while it is my intention to both a) remain sobre, and b) avoid "you lookin' at my girl" enduced violence from those whose intentions do not include my "a".

Sigh.  And all I wanted to do was get some Chinoise take-away and watch "Incubus," the Shatner horror film (aren't they all, though?) whose dialogue is entirely written in Esperanto.

It's okay, Mite.  I only really exist on the internet.

Thankfully, Mr. Shatner is very much real.  You can get a really nice Special Edition DVD of Incubus from many online e-tailers, but I got mine from Overstock.com for only $5.99 around Christmas time last year (why I bought a Gothic Melodrama Demon film around Xmas can only be understood by meeting my family).

It looks like they're out of it, but many other places, like DeepDiscountDVD.com have it for a half-way decent price.

God.  Now I have such an urge to dig out his CD, "The Transformed Man" which of course you all already own since it is a Classic with a capitol C.

Well, not only did no one recognise my costume, but even when I told these New Yorker pseudo-intellectuals who I was dressed up as they STILL didn't get it.  I'll bet they would have known who I was if I dressed like Camile Paglia, but then that would just be more frightening than anything else, even for Halloween.

A propos of nothing at all, it's November now, and I realised today that I associate months in my head with this image of a timeline that shifts in relation to where I am in the year - I'm sure everyone has their own visualisation of the year/month/time in general - anyway, mine's twisty and each month has its own colour (in a nice gradient) and November to me is mostly brown in colour, which is none-too-pleasant.

It's greenish at the beginning of the month, though, so I'm trying to enjoy the green while it lasts.   The autumn is my favourite time of year without a doubt (I'm not sure what that says about my personality) as I love the smell of things burning, like firewood, branches, the bodies in the tidal marsh behind my house, etc., but then of course the cold of winter comes and just sucks the life out of everything.

Yes, just nothing but cold, the kind of icy wind that feels like it can rend the soul from your body, which is just that much closer to being entombed in the cold cold ground.

Okay, I'm off to listen to Tom Waits records and cry myself to sleep.

Nighty night.

Well, I was all dressed up like Slink and everything and just going about my business when all of sudden this guy walks up to me.  I'm like, "Hey" and he's like "Hey, you're Slink."

Then he busts me right in the chops.  What's up with that?

Next year I'm going as Jough.  Surely Jough has never sufficiently offended anyone such that they would be willing to bust him in the chops, right?

My Rocktober 32nd party is over, and it's only 1. People were "tired" or some crap like that. I'll sleep when I'm dead. Unfortunately, it's tough to go to the Claremont Lounge by oneself, and any other bar is too far to walk.

I associate November with bone-chilling cold and deep, dark depression, what with being from Minnesota and all. But now, living in Georgia, my system is totally thrown off. It's 80 degrees here, fer chrissakes. It shouldn't be any warmer than 40. I think I'll have to hibernate just to keep myself from going completely schizo.

Sorry, I really should have warned you about that, but hey it got some of it off my back for the night!

As for Novemberness, I kinda see it as a slightly blue but otherwise nasty grey. Despite the fact the light shining it right now is all orange.
I don't like Winter all that much. Damn cold, damn wet, damn boring. And it gets dark at 4pm.

Wouldn't be much of a costume, going as me.  Just get some little round James-Joyce-esque specs, a short mini-pompador, and a bunch of button-down Oxford shirts (in pastel colours for bonus points) and dark Dockers in colours like "mustard" and "olive" along with well-worn black combat boots for footwear.

No jewelry, no piercings, no tattoos to worry about.  If you shave your head around the side you'll be "Summertime" Jough.  If you let it grow to be a little Baldwin shaggy you'll be "Wintertime" Jough.

I'd worry about being out of style but I've seen what's IN style, and it's hideous.

-- Jough

P.S. I don't know if anyone would dare try to bust me in the chops, but perhaps there are those who would like to perform other types of bodily mutilation on me.  It's the burden of the wise-ass.

Mustard Dockers? Jough, do you live in the 1960s or what? Granted you're not "with it" as you say, but DAYUM do you have to be so out of it? Mustard khakis went out with the terms "reefer" and "swingin'." Did you miss the whole black-wool-slacks/black-cotton-turtleneck thing from a few years ago? Maybe it's time to try that?

I hope Mite's more with it than you are; otherwise, you'll never find dalliance in a damsel's drawers.
