Title: Music to sweat my ass off too
Post by: Golfhaus on September 07, 2008, 09:35:07 pm
Lately, I've been eschewing plugging into the TV soundicators on the machines at the gym (since half of them are broken anyway) and taking my MP3 player to listen to. Do you have any songs to suggest listening to while I'm running in place on the elliptical machine? I've found that I go faster/harder with faster-music. I've about used up my Fatboy Slim tolerance.

Early Nine Inch Nails, pretty much most of it.

It's all metal for me, man. I usually crank the Amon Amarth, Trivium, and Lamb of God.

I like everything, even when working out.  It was a bit ridiculous all going balls out the one time I listened to the Zombies though.

IDK, last time I was working out a lot I went with Neil Young and Clipse most of the time.  All Hip Hop is good, really.

I, too, like Fatboy Slim. Or Smash by The Offspring.

I dunno, an hour on the elliptical machine last Saturday, and I think for a fleeting moment I WAS Axl Rose, all wearing a kilt with biker shorts, all stumbling around all over the place.

smets, good call on the NIN. That's going on first thing.

man, I just do not get NIN at all.

My recommendation is definitely Motorhead and the like.

I like Pay to Cum (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QoQAZDdl4LY) to get pumped up, but it is more of a spastic energy than a long-term work-out energy.
(Pay to Cum is just the first 1:30.)

Also for me, some fast Funk is always good to get worked up. My favorite is Ronnie's Groove (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yh3rHg_wz0c).

I am another who doesn't get NIN in the slightest.

Although, JC's version of Hurt is freakin' awesome.

Oh, and bubblegum music is perfect for working out to.  Seriously.  It's got the perfect tempo and beat.  Warning though, it'll be earworm city.

Yummy Yummy Yummy I got love in my tummy...

The first time I really started working out regularly in a gym was in about 1987.  I had a walkman and one cassette that I consistently took with me -- it had More Songs About Buildings and Food on one side and Fear of Music on the other.  Probably seems like odd workout music, but it worked for me.

I enjoy listening to extremely self righteous folk music of the angry feminist variety.  Don't think that would be up your alley, but if so, let me know.

Also, on the other end of the spectrum, if you want to be reminded of the number one reason to work out in the first place (fuck*ng, enjoying more fuck*ng, better fuck*ng), I highly recommend Peaches, all up tempo, electronic mixed with punk and... um...  Peaches is hard to explain.  Specific songs being:

Shake Yer Dix
I Don't Give a Fuck (perfect for when you want to up your RPMs)
Fuck or Kill (awesome opening:  I'd rather fuck who I want/than kill who I am told!/I'd rather fuck who I want/than kill who I am told!)
I U She
Boys Want to Be Her (love the guitars on this one)
Fuck the Pain Away

Also:

The Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs - Phenomena
White Stripes - Seven Nation Army
Violent Femmes - Blister in the Sun, Ugly, Dance Mother Fucker Dance
Queen - We Will Rock You
Outkast - Hey Yeah
Modest penis - Bukowski
Mika - Grace Kelly, Big Girl (You Are Beautiful), Love Today
Kanye West - Stronger
Gorillaz - Feel Good Inc.
Beastie Boys - anything, if I were to recommend an album it would be the double album The Sounds of Silence.  Even as a fan, I really love this compilation.
Stevie Wonder - Superstition

Also, what I have been really digging lately is early Beatles stuff - love, love, love.  It works with the endorphin rush for me anyway.

For the mostly cheery up-tempo East Coast drinking ditties, I highly recommend
Great Big Sea - the entire album "Up"

Also:
Henry Rollins - spoken word stuff (time flies)

...Sorry - got to get back to work!

I hate to be a weaselly little thread-hijacker but I'd like to hear more.

Gang of Four- Entertainment

You can go ahead and take the Liars of your list when you do so.  OR, you know, don't, cause they are awesome too.

What, no Bikini Kill?

Definitely Bikini Kill and Sleater Kinney.

My girlfriend in high school was weirded out that I was so into those two bands.
This and Minor Threat and Fugazi were the soundtrack to a part of my life where I was pretty mad about a lot of things.

I would normally listen to Little Mouth (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EGcThxZO5LQ&feature=related) and then skip a few tracks to get to Good Things (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nnpeSkkNeM4&feature=related). But Little Mouth is more what you want.
The video I linked to was the best version I could find online. Sorry.

I loves me some Sleater-Kinney but I can't get into Bikini Kill at all.
