Title: Fox News: Fair and Balanced
Post by: pmcd9 on October 27, 2008, 03:45:04 am
In the near past the local news radio station became a Fox affiliate (...we report, you decide).  They played a new station ID this evening I thought was pretty interesting.

Here's a transcript.

Obama:  William Ayers is not involved with my campaign.

McCain:  As Hillary Clinton said in the primaries "The American People need to know the full extent of this relationship."

Voiceover (Reassuring):  When the choices get complicated you need a voice you can trust.  Get up to the minute election coverage with KTRH.

Announcer:  KTRH News Radio, Houston's news, traffic and weather station.

From my rather removed perspective it seems like this whole Ayers thing has been a big mis-step for McCain. Not because it's not a justified attack (from what I've read I don't think it is but...) it's not relevant whether it's justified if it's simply ineffective. The thing it keeps reminding me of is the business connections between Bush and the Bin Laden family, a much more solid well documented connection and how many votes did it sway? Sure there were plenty of people getting upset about it on the internet, but Snakes on a Plane and Ron Paul were popular on the internet.
I just don't think this kind of thing convinces people, it's all kind of abstract, especially when there are far more concrete problems to be worried about. Vague terrorist threat will always lose to can't pay my grocery bill.

But yeah, the way that ad is phrased suggests their fair and balanced scales might be a leeetle bit tilted. Unless they have a similar ad that goes the other way.

McCain spent a lot of political capital on the idea that waving the bloody shirt of old Vietnam-era cultural divisions would pay off a lot more than they possibly could...

A lot of people got elected years and years and years after the Civil War, bringing out the old tropes to call people heroes and villains from it but...

Frankly, when it turns out that opposing the war in Iraq and opposing the war in Vietnam would've BOTH been good ideas, there we are.

History repeating itself backfires on a guy living so far in the past that it cycled back around.

In a lot of people's minds, at this point, an organized movement to stop the war against the Iraqi people sounds like a damned good idea. Granted, they don't wanna say it out loud and they wouldn't want to use the violent tactics of the Weather Underground but... yeah.

The people who were doing what Ayers did basically eight hundred thousand years ago... they were fighting the wrong way but for the right goal and that means a lot in the American subconscious.

Only a completely mindfucked shit like MacBeth would roll the farm on the belief that people REALLY would want to go back and stick it out in Vietnam if they had a time machine, if they could.

I like the mccain ads that are all about bill ayers and just show a picture of obama. They give the impression that bill and barack were rampaging across the country together fire bombing nursery schools.

My news/traffic/weather station is owned by a heavily Mormon company but they seem to be largely impartial when I comes to actual news coverage. Or they slant my way which makes them appear impartial to me.

Their "commentary and analysis" people to make me want to hurt them badly, though.

"Next Tuesday there will torrential rains and hail the size of Mike Tyson's fist, centered entire overly democratic Arlington county. Meanwhile in Prince William county we expect blue skies, sunshine, and the return of jesus."
