Title: Blogs for Thanksgiving Weekend
Post by: wombat on November 27, 2008, 02:50:10 pm
Here's the thing I just realized about Pat's blog. I'm sure that in some interview somewhere, Onstad has said that thing that writers often say, that each of his characters comes from some part of his own personality. And you think about this and you think, yeah, you can picture this person, who has a little bit of Ray and a little bit of Teodor and a little bit of Roast Beef and even a little bit of Cornelius that he is growing to grow old to be. Because we all have a little bit of fun-loving and a little bit of obsessed with food or whatever and a little bit of self-doubt inside us. You can sympathize with all of that and it makes sense how they can all be different facets of a guy. And, a guy you'd like to, like, have a beer with.

But somehow I never thought... Pat.

OMG, Pat's voice in this blog. It is so real and so awful. He's just so awful. It just perfectly captures a particular kind of awfulness. Almost as if... the author has a little bit of Pat in him too.

I'm glad I never thought of this before. I mean, I let that man hug me. *shudder*

Wait, so you never thought the thread locking machine was in any way a little Pat-ish?
Title: Re: Blogs for Thanksgiving Weekend

I guess I can see the connection now. But did I picture Thread-Locking Onstad as anything like exquisitely, horribly, wonderfully detailed mental image that is evoked by the Pat of the blogs? No.

Yeah, Pat would lock threads if he had a chance, sure. But somehow, Pat was always the odd character out in my mind, the one in whom was deposited hateful characteristics seen in other people.

Of course, I always did have a little bit of the Stockholm syndrome sort of thing in that respect. I mean, really, didn't we deserve to be locked, sometimes?

I guess I always saw the guy as basically half-Pat and half-Ray, with Teodor and Beef being the light and the dark of trying to synthesize the two.

There is something about golf that would only be appreciated by someone who is half-Ray and half-Pat.

I am confused as to why he would pick a -billy themed thing to grow off of.

There are, though, ridiculously crazy -billy scenes in St Louis, apparently. All kinds of weird psycho- horror- death- whatever- billy bands. I have heard that it is like, a big deal.

The second you find out about a happening bhangra-billy scene, post it here and I'll immediately get on a plane.

Man, that would be awesome.  Seriously.

I've done a million Pat-like things.  The things that suddenly come flooding into your memory just before you fall to sleep - that stuff - that makes you cringe.  I mercilessly humiliated my mother for saying that 'Professor' Gadget was coming up on TV, when she only said it because she knew I'd want to watch it.  That was 20 years ago, and I still burn bright red with shame thinking about that.

I told a friend that Catholicism made no since sense, and I told her that for about 40 minutes like a boring insensitive cunt who can't take a hint until she cried.

We are all terribly awful people, and since I know that today most of you are celebrating a holiday that encourages introspection, I'd like to put the point across that the people on Touamb are particularly awful.  For all the time I've been lurking here, I've been desperate to tell you that.

Who is the most awful?

It is imperative that we know who is the most awful.

Personally, I've long accepted that my awfulness and my self-awareness are inversely proportional.

Um, what holiday is that? It's not like it's Yom Kippur or something. It's mostly about eating too much. Hmm, I wonder what pretentious thing Teodor is cooking.

YES!

Also: yes, I am the most awful person in the world.

I don't know what you're talking about with the rest of these guys, though.

You have to use a cooked turkey so the ribs are very soft and flexible, then before you add stuffing use the gutted turkey abdomen as a bellows. Use the wings as handles and fashion a nozzle out of yam paste or mashed potatoe, shaped into a thin layer and then baked until crispy.

If you are a traditionalist that cooks the stuffing in the turkey you will need to remove it at this point and risk stuffing chunks ending up in your ping potatoes.

Dang it where are the rest of the blogs I was promised.

Apparently instead he was writing a bunch of Nate Small that is posted in the premium thingy. I do not want more Nate Small, I want more blogs.

One more reason I won't pay for Premium until he has well and truly lost interest.

OK, I have to give this Nate Small excerpt credit for starting with a scene where he builds a device to make it pleasanter for a dachshund puppy to pee in the rain.

But I'd still rather have a blog entry than the rest of a Nate Small story after the plot gets going.

Shit, wombat is entirely too nice then. Because me, I totally have a Pat-like aspect, time to time.
Haha.
Yeah, it doesn't really show that often, haha.

Wow. I have found that TOUAMBers are almost scarily not-awful. It's like, do you know that one culture that purposefully puts a flaw in it's rugs? (Which one it is escapes me now.) But, it's like, TOUAMB is like that flaw, and the internet is the rug. Except backwards. It's like, when I first came here, I found it disconcerting how not-awful it is here.

It's tragic - I actually really had hope that all of the blogs would be updated, possibly with a really touching thanksgiving story that gradually got more twisted with each entry in classic achewood fashion. I feel like an abused loved who keeps returning to the abusing partner again and again.

And yet, I still feel like there is a chance for multiple blog entries tomorrow.

Yes! Keep hope alive!

And, Toaster, that's the nicest thing anyone's ever said about us. I'm touched.

Huuugs!

I want to start saying "cussin'" as a repacement word for real cussin'. Like, "What's with these cussin' donkeys?" Maybe it will take off.

Also, I love "Theory Noodle". I think the theory prefix can apply to most anything. Like, "Theory dog".

Is it an intended Phillipeism that he calls a Pyrex bowl "a Pyrex" or is this a thing that people do?

If it is a Phillipeism, I approve.

If this is a common shortening, I do not approve. There is shortening language for convenience and then there is being pointlessly vague.

Many things other than bowls can be Pyrex.

I figured it was a Pyrex measuring cup for whatever reason. Just seems more Lyle.

Totally. Why measure with a cup and then pour it into a bowl when the measuring cup would work? Certainly not just because it would be more civilized. That's Lyle for you.

Eating microwaved ramen out of a measuring cup is that little moment when you say to yourself:

"Huh.  I guess it has been a year since I've been in a relationship."

My measuring cup must be small, then.

Right now we are cooking "Chinese Spaghetti" for dinner.
Ramen, no flavor packet, sesame oil and soy sauce. Peppered chicken.
YEAH
YEAH

Especially if you're eating it while standing over a sink with yesterday's saucepan of Mac 'n Cheese sitting in it.

Under the sink: a bag of potatoes, some of which you eat raw with a little salt.

I knew it was a while for me when I realized I hadn't cleaned off my Foreman Grill in a couple of years.

When I finally met my wife, she refused to eat food that had been cooked on it.

oh!
That reminds me. I haven't cleaned mine in... a month?

But I mostly cook paninis and quesadillas on there, so it's mostly leftover nasty cheese!

OH! DISGUSTING!

You fool!  You let her see it?  My wife believes that grilled foods are delivered by scampering woodland creatures and have nothing to do with the stained, blackened, sagging contraption that darkens a corner of our backyard.

The year-since relationship measure syncs up kind of worryingly with my experience. I got twitchy the other night and went through our kitchen and one of the things I cleaned was our cheese-encrusted sandwich maker. A later conversation with my house-mate revealed it hadn't been used at least since my ex moved out about 9 months ago. Luckily it turns out grilled cheese keeps pretty well.

Why does the board warn you when you're posting and there have been new posts, but it doesn't warn you when you're posting and it's going to start a new page? Drives me crazy.
