Title: MisterQueue AWOL Again
Post by: pmcd9 on December 17, 2008, 04:45:07 pm
Misterqueue has been very active on Flickr lately.  Two days ago he decided to take a break (http://www.flickr.com/photos/misterqueue/3109566904/).

Very interesting.  Any speculation on how long he'll be gone or if he'll return at all?

He lives very close to me, and I always imagine I will see him.

I never do, though.

I will say that it's pretty common to drop the internet like that loser 'friend' that's barely good enough for company in boring times as soon as something better comes along.

Most people don't seem to feel the need to announce it, though.

I totally plan on dropping the internet when something better comes along.

HA!

HAHA!

HAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

(the sound of LOLing fades into the distance)

I mean this not in a confrontational way but more in the spirit of inquiry: why do you, and so many people, here, care? He was a dude that posted on a board. Then he stopped. What's the appeal?

We care because he disappeared dramatically. That is the whole point of disappearing dramatically.

I care for the same reason I'd care if you completely quit posting.  Q is a clever, interesting guy.  His participation on the board made it a funn(i)er place.  Folks like that are pretty rare.

But hey, we've all got our demons.  Dude's entitled to behave as he sees fit.

Wombles and A-West are both right but I'm going with Wombles today. i.e. we are chumps who are happy being played because we have nothing better to talk about. See also: Inev's post re bitter laughter/tears.

I concur with AW's explanation.  You know when you're extremely bored at work, and you say "Let's see what's up on TOUAMB," and then you go and there's no new posts and you're all disappointed?  That happened less often when Mr. Q was active.

The sad truth is I don't really remember what he actually wrote. I only remember the incredible welling up of emotion of faux-emotion born of boredom surrounding his absences. Similar to that guy with the sad batman avatar. He is more famous for his absence than his contributions.

I've been retraining the ***** that once was #####***** and in doing so feeding the old #touamb logs; looking through them, I can't even say that anything he said there was particularly memorable (though it was sometimes amusing).

Well, on a day to day basis, don't knock amusing, you know? Carlos is right, there is less to read here than there once was, and I would be happy to have someone as prolific and generally entertaining as Q around here these days.

I guess I never really got the presumed distance of the internet.  I consider online relationships to be as real as any other.

I care about Misterqueue because I like him and I miss that he's not around anymore.

I gotta wonder why anyone would be here if they don't care.  It seems pointless to me to spend so much time hanging out with people you don't give a shit about.

Total time logged in: 5 days, 10 hours and 53 minutes.

Since this site moved over from dumbrella, what, in 2005? Not a lot of time in total. Probably most of it includes cookie timeouts too.

Internet relationships are not predicated on the same time urgency as face to face relationships in the 20th and 21st century. It can be, and often is, hit and run.

Misterqueue is a guy who many of us had honest to god human contact with in spite of the sometimes isolating effect if the internet.  I have a friendship with him that extends to many places beyond this board, which has been rich, fun and full of shared humour and sensitivity. (http://www.flickr.com/photos/misterqueue/2187614269/)  I think it's totally reasonable to take breaks from communities and move from community to community, and maybe his manner of announcing his exit assuages the kind of guilt I tend to feel when I neglect a group of friends and acquaintances for too long.  Maybe it bothers people that he doesn't treat internet contacts as the anonymous thing that they can sometimes be.  To me he's just being courteous in his way.

I guess when I leave places, I leave as quietly as I can, through the backdoor and disappear... or at least I try to.

It's the one situation where I guess I try to compensate for the fact that I am too too gratingly noticable and large and loud and opinionated in every other way.

I debated whether or not I should post anything in this thread as it would give off the opinion that I enjoy attention and really that's not true (well if there is a kernel of truth it's only half true.  I love/hate attention at best.)

Anyway, I thank you paul for your concern and it is very touching, I am back (on flickr anyway) now.  Smells hit the nail on the head but she would because we are psychically dating one another, just don't tell her husband (congrats by the way).

I am not one to whine/mope on the internet when things go badly (unless it's in a cryptic post on my own personal site that gets deleted after a couple days, but that's what that site is for), so when the going gets real tough I just go dark.  I don't like to leave people playing the "OMG HE IS SO MYSTERIOUS WHERE DID HE GO?!" game though if I've pavlov's dogg-ed them into expecting a couple posts/images from me a day so I just say "Hey... out for a bit.. back in a while" and leave that at that.  It's not that I don't think of them as people and thus worthy of an explanation... it's just that I have issues with being close to anyone, and especially so on the internet.  It's my thing man, don't take it personally.

That being said, it was comforting, when I looked at my flickr stats, to find this post and furthermore find that some people still thought of me fondly around these parts.  I never really felt like I made that big a splash but you bastards brought blushes to my cheeks for what it is worth.

It is also comforting to see that Donnie Dodecahedron still could care less about anything that doesn't involve Donnie Dodecahedron.  That is precisely as I expect him to be always, and I would not have him any other way.  I say that last statement without pretension or facetiousness.

Anyway, I have rambled through electrons at you all enough.  You keep on keeping on and know I think of you all fondly, and I'm glad that it seems the feeling is mutual.  *Internet High Fives*

Just in time to roll over his post count to keep up with the year.

Wheels within wheels...

Glad to hear you're still alive though Qbert.

Who the fuck is "MisterQueue"?

Maybe we should just shut down the board since no one is posting but LOTS of people seem to be reading the non-postings.

I mean, with AssBar around, is this board even necessary anymore?

I've been making an effort recently to post more for this very reason.  I always check but rarely post anymore.  I guess I am thinking that if I don't post who will, but I am running out of things to say to you lot.

This is like saying we should shut down the library, it's no use because all people are doing are reading the stuff in it.

Has anyone noticed it's the holidays? The whole internet is slow, people are out having lives.

This board gets quiet when the strip is quiet.  That sadly is most of the time now.

It's like the IRC channel. If traffic is this slow, it's best saved for an opt-in mailing list or something.

Oh yeah, I forgot that there was a comic around which this board is supposedly themed.

Well, carry on, then.

Oh yeah.

It's a comic about this guy who sells t-shirts and posters on the internet and will let you listen to him talk about his kid for three extra dollars a month. Pretty rad.

Actually, I've gotten nothing about his kid for my three dollars - which is kind of too bad, since I've been reading the collected baby updates and remembering how much I liked them.

It should have become a comic strip about a baby.

To be totally honest, I've more or less given up on Achewood.  I read it consistently up until Feb 2008, and I've probably read under a dozen strips since.  I first tried to get caught up, but got totally bored, then tried to read something more recent and got bored...  Were there any strips worth reading in 2008?  I figured there would be the natural bleed through of references in the non-strip related posts on TOUAMB if anything outstanding came up... but nothing.  So, uh... yeah.  Is Achewood worth reading anymore?

Yes. Not every time (like today) but definitely yes.

2008 strips are funnier than "Phillipe is standing on it."

There's something to be said for the trickle of content adding to this all, you know.

When dude was churning out five a week, three duds mixed in there would be well forgiven.

When you're lucky to get two a week and one of them sucks? Yeah.

S'natural.

I think that's about how many there have been.
